• Local Data:• 86% of kids identified a special adult in their life• 84% showed improvements in self confidence • 70% showed improvements in attitudes toward school

• National Data:• 75% more likely to have a 4-year college degree• 52% more likely to volunteer in their community• 39% more likely to have an income of $75k or more

Determine how best to meet the needs in our community to help kids improve in area’s of

Social Acceptance and School Attendance

• Monday, October 18th 4-5 pm• Discuss what obstacles kids face in target areas

• Monday, November 1st 4-5 pm• Discuss possible interventions and strategies to help children overcome

these obstacles

Attendance Obstacles

Parent supervisionNot feeling connection to someone/something at schoolSurvival mode: next meal, bill paying, etc.Relying on others for transportationReflection of family (no $ for laundry, don’t go to school w/o clean clothing)Structure at home – not conducive to studyingParents not putting importance on school/attendance when other needs ariseParent need daycare resourcesTeen pregnancyParent work schedule

Social Acceptance Obstacles

• Interpersonal skills. Technology: texting, emailing, FB• Discipline/structure/accountability• Need for extracurricular/activities at school (opportunities for someone to

miss you)• Feeling like not fitting in. People being in your business. Hard to feel a part

of something.• Being on either side of average• Status (socioeconomic, ethnicity, race, etc.)• Acceptable clothing/accessories (including cell phones)• Facebook exclusion (not on FB or being bullied)• Increased misbehavior (cool to be “bad”)
