ALUMNI RELATIONS

Dear Alumni and TASIS England Community,

Hello from the Thorpe campus!

Thank you to everyone who joined us in San Francisco in March. It was a joy to share time with you listening to your stories and watching you connect with other TASIS England alumni. This week, we hosted the London Eye, Hotel Chocolat Tasting Alumni event. Thank you to those of you who were able to join us.

We welcome and value your involvement with the School and your participation at reunions, both on and off campus. Coming up next week, we are hosting an alumni concert. In August, we invite the entire community to join us to celebrate all things TASIS England. In September, we are hosting two special alumni art talks with Marcia Page, who will present two art talks at the Wallace Collection. Registration for this event will open in late summer. All reunions and alumni events are free to you and your guests and are sure to be a fun time. We hope you are able to join us.

It is time to begin collecting news for the Class Notes section of the 2013 TASIS England Today alumni magazine. If you have celebrated a special event this year, welcomed a child into your family, or have been promoted or changed jobs, let us know! All submissions are due by Friday, June 14, 2013.

If you are or were part of the Greek system while at university, we invite you to share your experience and advice with current seniors who have expressed an interest in joining a fraternity or sorority when they enter university. If you would like to help, please contact the Alumni Team.

Our Alumni Relations Team would like to take a moment to thank our Class Agents for their dedication to their respective classes and to the School.

If you are planning a trip to England, we would be thrilled to see you in Thorpe! By planning ahead, we can set up classroom visits and lunch with your favorite TASIS England people. If you are not London-bound this year, stay connected via www.tasisengland.org/alumni. Our online alumni community is one more way to keep in touch wtih your classmates and the School. It is also the perfect place to update any changes in your contact details.

Warmest wishes,

Ruth Anne SnelsonAdvancement Associate for Alumni [email protected]

TASIS WALKING TOURHoliday in France for TASIS Alumni & Friends

June 27-July 5, 2013Planned and guided by Peter Boynton, TASIS Lugano Class of 1969

Join us this summer to explore the beautiful but little-known region of Franche-Comté in the French Jura with its lowlands of verdant valleys, pristine lakes, red-roofed villages and ‘les recuées,’ cirque-like dead-end valleys. Walk on gentle trails, taste local wines and cheeses, and enjoy the company of your fellow-hikers and the surprising information and anecdotes with which your guide will be able to enrich each day.

Our home for the week is the magnificent 12th century Château d’Andelot, with its hill-perched panorama of the intimate Suran River Valley, its sprawling terraces, beautiful gardens, swimming pool, tennis court, stately gather-ing rooms and elegent private accommodations. It is no coincidence that we have chosen this as our base: Château D’Andelot is owned by the family of Peter Graham Belin, TASIS Lugano Class of 1969, who was Peter Boynton’s roomate during their TASIS Lugano years. The Belins are delighted to welcome the TASIS alumni family to their beautiful French home.

What awaits you:• Gentle terrain, rich terroir.• Daily walks of 9 miles on average, with an elevation differential of a mere 800 feet. • A private bus brings us to a different trail each day for a 360 degree experience of the region, and is available

to offer respite along the way for anyone in need. One could even ride the bus any full day in order to to experi-ence the day’s sights while taking a break from walking.

• Admire the Vallée de Suran, the great cascades of Hérisson and Éventail, a string of blue lakes at Chalain and beyond, and the spectacular reculée of Baume-les-Messieurs.

• Discover the 250-year-old saltworks at Arc-et-Senans and Salins-les-Bains, typical Jura ‘vin jaune’ vineyards (with tastings), the Comté cheese-making capital of Poligny and the vast Fort des Rousses cheese-aging cellars.

Price$3350/person based on double occupancy (Single room with supplement, subject to availability.)$2995/person for travelers who have participated on Peter’s past alumni hikes (10% discount)

Included in the price: all overnights; all dinners; three restaurant lunches; entry fees where stipulated in the detailed trip description (including wine and cheese tastings); tips for our chauffeur, château staff and guides at sights (but not for Peter’s assistant); and all eight breakfasts. Not included: overseas transportation to and from Bourg-en-Bresse, six picnic lunches, beverages (except break-fast), personal purchases.

ALUMNI PROFILETaylor Conophy

Class of 2007After leaving TASIS England, Taylor completed degrees in Integrated Marketing Communication and French at Pepperdine University. She went on to the University of Southern California to earn a degree in International Relations and Global Business and a degree in Design Management from Parsons The New School for Design in New York. She now works as a Graphic Designer and volunteers her time with Sparkrelief.

Sparkrelief is an organization committed to improving disaster relief services through systemic change. Through our website Sparkrelief.org, we help organizations and individuals efficiently find, offer, and coordinate disaster relief in locations throughout the world. All disaster and relief information is mapped on our website, where users can quickly find the critical information they need to alleviate suffering caused by disasters.

Eli Hayes founded Sparkrelief in the summer of 2010. At the time, wildfires raged through the Rockies, and Eli, who lived in Boulder, Colorado, found it difficult to learn how to help. Recognizing a need, he and a few volunteers raced to build an online forum to make it easier for people to lend a helping hand. In fewer than five days, the site received nearly 1,000 offers of relief (including a donation of 400 meals), and was visited by 25,000 people seeking disaster and relief information.

Eli revamped the website in response to the Japan Earthquake and subsequent disasters, eventually giving rise to our current site. Since joining the organization as a volunteer in 2011, I have worn many hats. I took on design projects, marketing, communications, managing volunteers, and fundraising. My contributions over the last year-and-a-half have helped contribute to Sparkrelief’s growth. Similarly, my work with Sparkrelief has encouraged me to grow. I am learning new skills, like front-end web development and marketing tactics, which are extraordinarily valuable to my professional advancement.

14

Page 17: TASIS England Alumni E-News, Spring 2013

After Hurricane Sandy, Sparkrelief helped to feed over 5,000 people. We partnered with Aubuchon Hardware to collect and distribute goods donated by thousands of people, and we helped Lush Cosmetics distribute over $40,000 worth of bath products to those in need along the coast in New York and New Jersey. In addition, we helped countless numbers of people find shelter from the storm. One woman, for example, had been searching for hours on the streets of Brooklyn looking for shelter. When she found Sparkrelief’s number and called, we helped her get to a nearby shelter in a matter of minutes.

At Sparkrelief, we feel fortunate to have the skills to improve the lives of millions of people. Our core team of three volunteers, based in Colorado and New York, keeps overhead costs low by working out of donated office space and using our own computers. We are a unique disaster relief nonprofit in that we do not purchase 1,000 water bottles and distribute them in person. Instead, we identify people and communities in need and connect them with the appropriate donors and services. Together, we aim to prevent the misallocation of resources, such as that which occurred in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.

Sparkrelief’s mission is to dramatically improve lives after natural disaster by providing one platform to simplify relief coordination across the globe. As social entrepreneurs, we are working to empower communities to help those less fortunate. We have big plans for the future: to be the go-to resource for major government entities, organizations, and individuals turn to in response to disaster.

SENIOR SPOTLIGHTKonadu Amoakuh, Class of 2013

My grandmother, Mrs. Fati Issaki, loved children. She was given the opportunity to follow her passion — nursing. I admire my grandmother for many reasons, but mostly because she came from a small village in Northern Ghana without running water and limited opportunities to gain an education. She was among the few northern girls who at the time enjoyed formal education. It was a big deal at the time. Initially, she trained at the Korel Bu Teaching Hospital where she earned her RN and midwifery certificates in 1958 and 1961 respectively. She also earned certificates from University of Ghana, St. Francis Xavier, Emory University, and Harvard University. She rose

through the ranks in various capacities in the three northern regions and in Accra. When she retired in 1997, she was serving as the Chief Nursing Officer with the Ministry of Health. Fati dreamed of helping abandoned and unwanted children throughout her career as a nurse.

The dream of opening a children’s home began in 1971, when an abandoned day-old baby was admitted to the Tamale Hospital. Grandma Fati showed so much love and motherly care to the baby that they named the baby “Fati”. Baby Fati was hospitalized for five months and then later transferred to a children’s home. Unfortunately, baby Fati died from illness at the home. This broke my grandmother’s heart. In 2001, Grandma Fati was able to bring her dream to reality with the establishment of the Anfaani Children’s Home in Tamale. Since then, the home has served 67 children. Grandma Fati operated the home until the time of her death in 2008.

The home, a NGO located in northern Ghana, cares for up to 12 children at a time between newborns up to three years old. The area struggles with sparse physical, social, and health facilities, and due to the high maternal infant

mortality rate, there are many children in need of homes. The Afaani Children’s Home is the only private orphanage found in Tamale and serves a vital and special role in the community. The mission of the home is to nurture children until their third birthday, at which time they may be legally adopted by carefully selected foster parents, returned to their families, or moved to suitable orphanages with educational facilities.

Konadu will attend Princeton University this coming autumn. She will be studying liberal arts and then plans to continue in environmental studies.

Page 19: TASIS England Alumni E-News, Spring 2013

When the home is full to capacity, it continues to provide families in need with training and support. The staff counsels distressed teenage mothers and teaches them how to feed and nurture their own babies. They also support the only primary school in the village of Duuyin (a suburb of Tamale where the first baby was from) by providing books and medication. The staff make follow-up visits to ensure that the children are healthy and flourishing. The home will provide food or clothing, as available, to help support the family.

At the moment, the home is in need of better renumeration for workers, reliable Internet access, a photocopier and scanning machine, a digital camera for keeping records of the children, a pick-up truck to monitor and evaluate the needs and progress of the discharged children, and consistent funding for feeding the children and upkeep of the home (baby food, diapers, baby toiletries, laundry detergents, disinfectants, etc.).

Learning more about the conditions facing motherless and abandoned children has opened my eyes. I have learned that people want to help and that it is important to always remember to give something back to others and to the community. Hearing other students here at TASIS England speak about their experiences serving communities and organizations around the world is encouraging. I want to combine my interests with what I plan to study in university to help become a good steward of my grandmother’s legacy.

My grandmother used to say, “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.”1 Corinthians 13:4-8

My grandmother’s legacy is her love for the motherless and abandoned children of Tamale. It is my wish to continue her legacy and, in future years, to play a larger role with the home.

The Anfaani Children’s Home welcomes and has accommodation for volunteers age 21 and over. Interested

parties should write for further information via email. Funding for the home comes entirely from donations made by

individuals and a few organizations both in and outside of Ghana. You can make a significant difference in the lives of

children by making a gift to the Anfaani Children’s Home. To make a donation, or to volunteer with the Anfaani Children’s

Home, please email [email protected].

DONOR PROFILENick Wormley Class of 1996Nick Wormley, Class of 1996, recently shared why he chooses to give to the TASIS England Annual Fund. He graduated from Quinnipiac University, where he currently serves as the Associate Vice President for Alumni and Parent Development. He lives with wife, Michelle, and son, Jackson, in Connecticut.

18

Why do you give to TASIS England? How does it make you feel?  I believe that TASIS England provided the foundation for me to be successful in a university setting.  This allowed me to follow the career path I am on today.  TASIS England taught me a strong work ethic, challenged my problem solving abilities, and at the same time enforced a balance between my academic and athletic endeavors. For these reasons, I am proud to make a contribution because it makes me feel like I am making a difference for the next generation. I value what TASIS England has done for me and this is the least I can do in return. Education has become one of my philanthropic priorities and I hope that everyone finds a way to give toward something they believe in to make a difference in someone’s life.

What would you say to TASIS England alumni to encourage them to give?  I would remind them of what laid the foundation for their academic and professional success. If we think back at the lessons learned, whether academic, athletic, or social, I guarantee that you can find examples of how they shaped you to be the person, parent, or employee you are today. Any size gift can make a direct impact on current students and future generations.

What’s one fact or point of pride that you would want others to know about TASIS England?  Stepping foot on campus gives you an immediate sense of pride, knowing that the beauty of the external façade matches the high quality of education that exists behind the doors. Upon returning to visit TASIS England, you will find that the core values of learning and leading still resonate.

Can you share a special memory about a person, place, or event at TASIS England?  The 1996 ISST basketball tournament in Athens, Greece – I remember winning the bronze medal and, as a bonus, meeting NBA basketball great Dominque Wilkins with my TASIS England teammates, including Jim Quinn ’96.

What would you like to see happen for the future of TASIS England? To continue to educate the next generation of leaders around the world. To continue to foster life-long relationships among classmates and teammates. To create a culture of giving back to the school and help alumni understand and appreciate all that TASIS England has to offer. To learn more about giving to TASIS England or to make a

donation, go to www.tasisgifts.org.

FACULTY FOCUS: Perrin Tingley

The Alumni Team recently sat down with history teacher, Perrin Tingley.

What brought you to TASIS England? I had the perfect job, at the perfect school, in the perfect location in Santa Barbara County. It was a small boarding school called Cate School. At 27, I felt that I was not ready to settle down permanently,

and I also felt like staying wasn’t going to help me improve as a teacher. I felt that the only way to really up the volume was to apply for jobs internationally. A colleague, who had worked at all of the TASIS schools and was a friend of Lyle Rigg (Head of TASIS England at the time), told me about TASIS, and I applied for a job in Lugano. Lyle interviewed me for a job in Lugano in San Francisco in the autumn of 1987. The job in Lugano never materialized, but Lyle offered me a job here in England instead.

How has your time at TASIS England helped you grow as a teacher?Teaching international students in particular is like being an air traffic controller who has all of these planes coming in. They are all flying at different altitudes, coming in at different speeds, and they all have to get to the same place at approximately the same time. The amount they improve over the course of the year is mind-boggling. Our kids are so admirable. They come such a long way, and they learn so much.

Which historical figure do you find most compelling? This is going to sound very jaded and Eurocentric, but Napoléon Bonaparte. He was, in a way, an outcast in his own society. He was born with an Italian name and spoke with a thick accent. He didn’t come from an aristocratic background, but because of the French Revolution and the fact that he was very good at a lot of things, he was able to move up the ladder. He was a talented general, a great motivator, and an extraordinary writer. He wrote 80,000 letters during his career! He had incredibly good ideas about society and equal rights, though he wouldn’t allow self-government. He was definitely contradictory, but nevertheless compelling. He was a victim of his own ego in terms of going into Russia. Certainly you could argue that he has been one of the most influential figures in the last 300 years of European history.

24

Page 27: TASIS England Alumni E-News, Spring 2013

What do you value most in your students? I value independent thinking. Social and peer pressures are such that it is very risky to be a freethinker when you are 16 years old. I don’t have to agree with those ideas, but I value independence of thought enormously. Having a sense of humor is important, too! The classes I like the most are energetic. Part of my job is to make them interested, but they have to show a bit of curiosity—ask the right questions, follow along. It’s not so much about focusing on facts, but more about internalizing ideas and events and really thinking about them.

What do you do when you are not teaching?I am establishing this nice relationship with my couch at home, which, I’ve recently discovered, is a really good place to read. I don’t know why it has taken me this long to realize that! I also like to be active. I ran a lot more before I had my hip replacement, but I do what I can to stay fit and get outdoors. I love London, so I go there whenever I can. This past year, John and I have seen lots of live music and gone to a fair amount of exhibitions. I also belong to a new club – it’s called the British Museum. I’m very snobby about my new “club”. Our location here in Thorpe is so perfect. We can travel to the middle of London to see an incredible exhibition, or hear amazing live music, or just walk along the river and have a pint in a pub. Or, in the very same amount of time, we can be out in ye-olde-patchworky-England, the way every American imagines it. Of course, I also like going to our local, the Coach and Horses, which Eddie Cross calls the Equestrian Center.

What is your ultimate luxury? I love to read the newspaper. The ultimate luxury for me is Saturday or Sunday morning in bed with the paper and a delicious cup of coffee, courtesy of John. It soothes my soul as much as a pint in a pub.
