TAS NEWS Tintinara Area School teacher Karen Schilling has won the Credit Union SA Primary Teacher of the Year at the 2019 SA Public Education Awards. Teachers play an important role in preparing children for adulthood and the award officially recognised the excellence she's displayed over her two decades in the field. Mrs Schilling was one of 10 category winners announced at an awards ceremony held last Friday at the Adelaide Convention Centre. Along with the brilliant accolade, the win will see her receive $10,000 to go towards professional development. Tintinara Area School principal Mike Sadleir, who nominated Mrs Schilling for the award, said the win shows that students aren't disadvantaged by the location and size of the school they attend. "There's a myth at small schools that people lower the bar or make excuses for why they aren't pushing themselves," Mr Sadleir said. "Karen exemplifies the sort of teacher that puts her heart and soul into her work - she often goes above and beyond what your typical teacher would do because of her love of the craft." Mr Sadleir said she is a "passionate and diligent educator", who often looks to improve well after many other teachers have finished for the day. "I don't think there's been a time when she's given herself a proper break, she's always looking to improve -you can tell her to stop and have a break and she will do more," Mr Sadleir said. Mrs Schilling was one of 10 category winners announced at an awards ceremony

held last Friday at the Adelaide Convention Centre.

Along with the brilliant accolade, the win will see her receive $10,000 to go

towards professional development.

Tintinara Area School principal Mike Sadleir, who nominated Mrs Schilling for the

award, said the win shows that students aren't disadvantaged by the location and

size of the school they attend.

"There's a myth at small schools that people lower the bar or make excuses for why

they aren't pushing themselves," Mr Sadleir said.

"Karen exemplifies the sort of teacher that puts her heart and soul into her work -

she often goes above and beyond what your typical teacher would do because

of her love of the craft."

Mr Sadleir said she is a "passionate and diligent educator", who often looks to

improve well after many other teachers have finished for the day.

"I don't think there's been a time when she's given herself a proper break, she's

always looking to improve -you can tell her to stop and have a break and she will

do more," Mr Sadleir said.

He said the time that she spends preparing and her dedication to making her

students better is second to none. (continued on page 2)

A new-look classroom has allowed for her to implement a number of different

learning initiatives which have seen her students thrive academically.

At the start of the year, Mrs Schilling will look data from her students using a

combination of pre-testing and data from the previous year, which allows for her

to set achievable goals for individuals to strive towards.

As part of the process, students are also asked to show where they think they are

via the class's 'Bump It Up Wall', which aims to show students what they need to

do next in order to move forward with their learning.

She can then see where the student thinks they're at and can guide their

learning accordingly.

"The ability to track students' growth is important - it makes me want to come to

school each day. Seeing them progress motivates me," Mrs Schilling said.

"Without the use of tracking, I believe students don't understand where they are

actually improving."

Mrs Schilling's individual success has proven that students don't need to attend

massive metro schools to receive high-quality education.

The highly respected teacher will continue to motivate and inspire the next

generation of Tintinara students with her brilliant learning initiatives and

willingness to see individual improvement.

Welcome back everyone to our final term for

2019. As you know this will be a very busy term

as we ensure all students complete their

learning programs.

Minister’s visit

Tuesday last week we had some very special

guests visit our lovely school. We extend our

thanks to the Education Minister John Gardner

and Member of Parliament Nick McBride for

making the time to visit. The minister was

affable and more than happy to officially open

our Covered Outdoor Learning Area (COLA), a

great addition that will benefit our students for

many years. We continually work to improve

our educational environment as well as the

quality of our teaching. Thanks again to

everyone who made our COLA a success, from

planning through to site preparation our

community ensured once the ball was rolling

the dust didn’t settle! The Minister appreciated

being able to visit a few classes, speak with our

students and governing council members who

were available at short notice. We can see he

genuinely cares about what happens in our

schools.

Congratulations

Congratulations to Karen Schilling, winner of

the 2019 Credit Union SA Primary Teacher of

the year award. Her work with knowing in detail

where students are and her differentiation for a

huge range of abilities to enable growth for

each individual student is a great example for

us.

Year 11 and 12 Students

Congratulations to Lidia and Jessie on their most recent Year 11 Specialist

Mathematics investigation results. Both achieved an ‘A’ grade for this task. Not bad

for a pair of year 9 girls from Tintinara Area School!

October, some classes will still continue as students may be required to complete

final assignments. Exams for Year 12 students will begin on Monday 4 November and

continue through to Monday 18 November. I would like to wish our Year 12 students

the very best over this stressful period and trust that families will support and

encourage their student through this last stage of their secondary schooling.

Year 11 students finish their formal lessons on Friday 29 November.

Presentation night

As you know presentation night is a huge event, please make a note in your

calendar for December 12th 6:00 PM for 6.30 PM start.

Groundsman V Principal Tennis match

Late last term our groundsman Kyle Challinger challenged me to a Tennis match,

with one week notice we hit the courts! It was great to see so many staff support the

event, a good way to lift the mood and provide a mental health break. I

congratulate Kyle for his dominant performance 6-3, it could easily have been 6-1!

GOVERNING COUNCIL NOMINATIONS & AGM

Our Governing Council is an important and integral part of our

school. It provides a focus, and a forum for parents and the school

community. It ensures that the whole school community is

considered and the needs of all student groups are appropriately

identified.

The Governing Council, in conjunction with the Principal:

• Set the vision and the broad direction of

the school

• Review, approve and monitor the school budget with regular

meetings

• Work on the Site Improvement Plan and develop, monitor

and review the set strategic directions of the school

• Review and determine policies for the school

Our Annual General Meeting will be held later this month in TAS

staff room/Admin Building. This date will be set by the Governing

Council in our week 4 meeting. All parents will be notified of the

date as it approaches.

Please think about nominating for a position on the Governing

Council. If you are unsure, talk to one of our current Governing

Council members for more information.

Please consider attending the AGM, there is no compulsion to join

the Governing Council or take on any roles, but your presence will

be valued as a demonstration of your interest in our school.

This term the 6/7’s have been learning about forces. One

particular experiment looked at how the magnetic forces work.

Students used iron filings to observe the magnetic field. The

magnetic force created different patterns, and when students

flipped or moved the moved the magnet, this altered the

pattern created by the force!

2020 Material & Services Charge

Each year the Department for Education determines how much schools are entitled to

charge parents/caregivers for their children attending school.

The Materials & Services charge is used to meet key costs in the school including books,

writing materials, plus costs associated with internet and photocopying materials for

learning. The amount we ask parents/caregivers to pay is the recommended/standard level

of payment and this forms a key part of our budgeting.

An invitation is extended to all parents/caregivers to attend the next Governing Council

meeting on Tuesday 5th November 2019 at 7:30pm in the Tintinara Area School –

administration building, where the 2020 Materials & Services Charges will be discussed and

presented for approval. Should there be any questions or issues regarding the 2020 Materi-

als & Services Charges, there is an opportunity to raise these at the meeting.

If unable to attend the Governing Council meeting and wish to express your view, please

put in writing to the Chairperson – Governing Council, Claire Harkness and leave at the front

office or email to [email protected]

A copy of the watermarked “Notice of Materials & Charge for 2020” is provided in the

newsletter.

GERMAN SEMESTER 2

This semester has had a Content and Language Integrated Learning/STEM focus,

trialling some fantastic new resources from the Goethe Institut. This is a world-wide

body sponsored by the German government to support the learning of the German

language. STEM resources come from all over the world. Last term the Year 3 and 4/5

classes used an Australian unit of work Meine Bohnenpflanze (my bean plant) and the

Year 6/7 looked at units from Experimentieren auf Deutsch (experiments in German)

which came from Slovakia.

This term the 4/5 and 6/7 classes are looking at STEM topics through the Goethe Institut

Kinder Universität (Children’s university), which is new in 2019. More information is

below. Students can sign up for free at home and study as well. The lessons are both in

English and German with Professor Einstein, Frau Schau and Jowo. They are all puppets

with amusing story lines.

The Junior Primary classes have continued with their CLIL focus, linking language and

other curriculum areas. The language classes are always busy places!

The Temple Grandin scholarship is offered by Dr Temple Grandin and co-

funded by the Tintinara Regional Development Enterprise (TRADE) group. These

scholarships are awarded to agriculture students starting off in an agriculture

program or enrolled in an agricultural course of study.

The primary aim of the Temple Grandin Scholarships is to support students fi-

nancially who are interested in agriculture as a profession. Whilst individual

awardees will benefit from the scholarship, it is important to note that local pri-

mary producers will benefit from their preparation when employed, and the ru-

ral communities will continue to thrive as the younger generations return to ru-

ral areas.

This Scholarship is also intended to encourage students to develop skills and

knowledge within the agricultural sector, driving change and contributing to

the development and growth outcomes of their own communities.

Further information and the Application Form are available on your education-

al institution’s website.

Applications open on 1st October 2019 and close on 1st December 2019.

Successful applicants will be notified by 15th January 2020.
