Itinerary Specially Prepared for THE ARMIDALE SCHOOL

Soak it Up 100% Pure New Zealand Rugby Tour 2015

WELCOME It is my pleasure, as Managing Director of Total Rugby, to welcome The Armidale School once again to New Zealand. It is our genuine desire to help develop your players in their quest to play the game to their best of their ability. We know from past experiences that these young men will also learn a lot more about life in general and the value of working together.

    INTRODUCTORY NOTES

Weather: July is winter weather, which means it can be very cold. Temperatures range from minus degrees in the mornings to 14 degrees during the day (on a good day!)

Grounds: Grounds may be very wet. At times they are closed because of flooding. If grounds are closed all effort will be made to find alternative venues. On the rare occasion this is not possible the game may have to be cancelled. You should ensure that all players have long studs in their boots. 18mm is recommended. Backs may prefer shorter studs but blades, will, in most cases, be ineffective.

  • Game protocol: Most schools in New Zealand have their own haka and it is common practice for the host school to perform the haka for overseas visiting teams. This is meant as a challenge and it is up to the visiting team to accept it as they wish. Generally, the team facing the challenge will line up on their own 10m line and front up. This is seen as the most respectful. Three cheers are performed at the end of the match and players shake hands with the opposition. Some clubs will perform a haka but it is less common than with school teams. It pays to ask before the game starts whether there will be a haka. Some teams may perform their haka at the end of the game.

Mouthguards: Mouthgurards are compulsory at all levels of rugby in New Zealand. The ref will inspect that you have a mouthguard at the start of the game.

Rugby Rules: Crutch binding in the scrums and lifting in the lineout is permitted in New Zealand age group rugby.

After match Arrangements: It is customary in New Zealand rugby to have an after match function for special visiting teams. It is a tradition we are keen to maintain. The after match is generally held at the hosts clubrooms or school. Speeches are made by the MC and respective captains. Often the visiting coach or manager is also invited to speak. There is always an exchange of gifts. This can take the form of a plaque/pendant, club or school ties, players jersey, touring booklet, pins/badges, beanies or something else that has been prepared. Food is then served.

First Aid: It is not compulsory to have a first aid officer at every game. Initial first aid is generally administered by coaching and/or management staff. Emergency services are available for more serious injuries. The emergency number in New Zealand is 111. There are after hours medical services available in all main centres. If medical treatment is required because of an accident, the Accident Compensation Commission pays for initial treatment although a surcharge is required to be paid by the patient. Total Rugby will assist with coordinating medical services including physiotherapy. It is expected that tour groups will have their own travel insurance to cover medical expenses. Operators of tourist services have their own policies regarding health and safety and issues arising should be managed directly with them.

Equipment: Total Rugby has a number of training balls available. Please make an early request for other specific equipment if required as it is possible to source a range of gear.

Ice: Ice for sideline treatment of injuries is available from nearly all service stations and supermarkets. It is recommended that teams bring an insulated container for storing ice at matches.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included daily throughout your itinerary. Breakfasts are continental (typically cereal, toast and spreads, tea/coffee), lunches are packed and are to be collected each day as you leave breakfast, dinners are two course (main course and dessert). Please note dinner and breakfast are not

  • included on the night the players are billeted, a packed lunch will be available on arrival at Adams House.

Itinerary Times: All the times shown on this itinerary have been booked and confirmed with the accommodation providers and activity operators. For meal time changes please liaise directly with the hotel. If you wish to change timings for any activities or find you are running behind schedule please contact Total Rugby so that we can inform the operator

Vouchers: On your arrival your tour leader will be given a voucher booklet containing the vouchers you will be required to hand over to our operators for the various activities included in your tour.

Laundry: Self-service coin operated laundry facilities are available at your Queenstown Hotel. Villas at Terrace Downs are equipped with washing machines and dryers for self use. A full laundry service is provided at Adams House.

Security/valuables: This is your own responsibility. Valuables have been stolen before. Please never assume that it will be okay to leave valuables unattended or gear rooms unlocked. Every attempt will be made to assist you with your own security.

Liaison: Total Rugby staff will be available 24 hours. Please use the cell phone numbers on this page. Our staff will not always be with you during your activities but we will check in with you each day, either in the evening to discuss the days events and go over the next day, or in the morning. There are other people who are also available to assist in most centres you will visit. They will either be the local Total Rugby Coordinator or someone appointed by Total Rugby.

Luggage: Due to coach luggage capacity it is requested that each person is limited to one suitcase and one carry-on bag. If your luggage is going to exceed this please advise Total Rugby prior to your arrival.

Rugby Boots: New Zealand has very strict biosecurity regulations, during your flight please complete the Passenger Arrival Card supplied by the airline with care and ensure rugby boots are clean prior to your departure.

Gear: We recommend everyone brings two towels with them. Towels are not provided at Adams House Swim wear and towel will be required at Tekapo Springs Hot Pools. Ski Day: Suitable jackets and pants are essential and can be hired on the mountain on the day and paid direct. Everyone will need a woollen hat/beanie and waterproof gloves. Jeans are not recommended.

  • Dominic BirdDominic, the tallest member of the Crusaders squad, returned for his third season in the Crusaders 2015 line-up. The towering lock grew up in the farming community of Waipukurau in the Hawkes Bay, but he moved to Christchurch at the end of 2009 to further his rugby career. He also began studying at Lincoln University where he is working towards an Environmental Management and Planning degree. He made his debut for Canterbury in 2011 and although he received just one cap that year, by 2012 he was attracting attention for his lineout skills and tough presence on the field. He appeared in every match for Canterbury that year and shone as one of the best lineout technicians in the competition. He made his Crusaders debut in 2013 when he stood in for Luke Romano. He was hugely impressive and earned man of the match in his first game. Injury robbed much of last year's campaign from him, but the limited game time he had was enough to convince the All Blacks selectors to include him in the 2013 end of year tour. Dominic was also a member of the 2011 New Zealand Under 20 team that competed in the IRB Junior World Championship in Italy.

Robbie Fruean The Crusaders welcomed Robbie back to the fold this year after a stint with the Chiefs in 2014. He is a dynamic and inspirational player who has brought speed and power to the Crusaders midfield since he originally joined the squad in 2010. In 2007 he represented NZ in the Under-19 Rugby World Championship, was named the IRB World Under-19 Player of the Year, and made his provincial debut for Wellington. However his rugby career then had to be put temporarily on hold while he underwent open-heart surgery to repair a potentially life-threatening inflammation of the heart known as pancarditis. It didnt hold him back for long though and in his debut season with Canterbury in the 2010 ITM Cup he was the joint leading try scorer and ITM Cup Player of the Year. However in 2013 his heart issues resurfaced and his season was cut short so that he could receive a further valve replacement. He returned to play for the Chiefs in 2014 but abnormal heart rhythms again saw him sidelined for much of the season. He recovered to play an impressive campaign for Hawkes Bay in the 2014 ITM Cup. His 2015 season was cut short when he fractured his right forearm playing against the Chiefs. He returned very late in the season but has recently ruptured his ACL and will require surgery.

  • 0930 Your final Total Rugby Training Session with elite local coaches will be held this morning at nearby grounds.

Scott Hansen Scott has been the Assistant backs coach for Canterbury ITM Cup team for the past two seasons. He is a former Canterbury and Crusader halfback and has played for various New Zealand junior sides. He is currently the Head Coach at Linwood Rugby Club but will be leaving New Zealand next year to coach the Leicester Tigers.
