Week Two Writing Assignment: Draft Your Narrative
Last week, your writing assignment was to choose one of the three prompts and use the thinking map or graphic organizer to plan your writing called a prewrite.
This week your assignment is to draft the beginning your narrative, real or imagined. Once you have drafted your beginning, you are to go back and revise.
When you write a draft, you are taking a first pass at your writing. You don't have to worry about making mistakes when you write a draft. There will be time to fix those mistakes in later stages.
Write Your Beginning Begin your draft by writing the beginning to your narrative-real or imagined. Your beginning should:
● describe the setting in which the narrative takes place.● introduce the narrator and characters.● introduce a conflict that drives the plot, or story line.● begin the sequence of events.
Include interesting descriptions and details from your planning notes. If you can't decide how to begin, just get some ideas on paper. Once you have written much of the first draft, you can revise it as many times as needed, adding more detail and description in places that need it.
Example Of A Beginning
Michael for School President by James P.
I could barely sit still in my seat during the bus ride to school this morning. Today was Election Day, and I was running for school president. My mind drifted to last Thursday when someone had drawn silly faces all over my campaign posters. I knew it was Jared Fisher, but of course he denied it.
“Are you getting off the bus or are you going to stand there like we have all day?” Jared hissed. I shook my head and walked off the bus toward the front of the red brick school building.
Revising The Beginning of Your Narrative, Real or Imagined
There are many ways to “hook” your readers! As you revise your beginning, try one of the suggestions below.
Write Descriptive DetailsTo make your fictional narrative more interesting, use descriptive details to tell readers about the actions, thoughts, and feelings of the characters in the story. In a fictional narrative, descriptive details can
● help readers picture the characters and the setting in their minds.● make the narrative more interesting.
Start with a questionBegin by asking a question to catch the reader’s attention. It will give hints about what the story will be about.
Have you ever been to a museum? Let me tell you about the school field trip to the museum this last fall. It was not your typical field trip. As soon as we walked through the door, things started to get crazy!
Sound EffectUse onomatopoeia or sound words to grab the reader’s attention.
Boom! Crash! The wind was howling outside my house. We were having a terrible thunder storm. As I looked at my window, a lightning bolt struck the ground and a little figure appeared.
Talking or DialogueStart with a conversation or the character speaking.
“Hold on tight!”, Dad yelled. We were just finishing the Thunder Mountain roller coaster ride when a strange light flashed as our car flew off the tracks and into a black hole.
Here is a checklist you can use to check your beginning writing!
