Target Audience Research

Page 2: Target audience research

At first I looked at common regional magazines like Essex life, Norfolk and Suffolk. It was clear from looking at a few of these magazines that the target audience is middle class, middle aged adults that have an interested in country life and recommendations for things to do and places to visit.

Regional magazines

Different types of Regional magazines

After looking at the country style magazines I then looked deeper at regional magazines and found ones like “Mayhem”, “time out” and “Absolute Brighton” these magazines are aimed at a younger target audience (16-30) and more working class audience. They look at more things like fashion and gossip. You can tell the difference between the two sets of magazines as the one aimed at the younger audience uses a lot more colour, has a different layout and uses more fashion looking photographs instead of the country side.

Time out magazine.

Time Out magazine can be collected up for free outside tube and rail stations on Tuesday mornings in London zones one and two. You can also subscribe for the magazine online. Also time out magazine is given out at different places throughout the week, for example places would be theatres and galleries.

Due to Time out giving there magazines out at tube stations and theatres there target audience would be very wide as lots of people use the tube, but the style of the front page looks more like a fashion magazine than a regional magazine so the target audience would be younger e.g. 16-40.

It’s also more likely to attract the working class due to its style and the fact it is free.

Mayhem magazine.

Mayhem Magazine is a free UK monthly lifestyle magazine. The magazine distributes across Portsmouth, Southampton and 800 surrounding areas. On there website they say “Quite unlike many other free publications, we pride ourselves on having equal split of advertising to quality entertaining editorial”

They also said “We target people with a disposable income, irrespective of age or gender, and it’s wonderfully effective.” so this shows they have a very wide target audience.

Absolute magazine.

Absolute Brighton magazine is a free magazine that can be collected in coffee shops.

They say on the website that it is aimed at 35% male and 65% female.

The age range they seem to aim for is quite big (16-30) as the magazine is more like a fashion magazine than a regional magazine.

My Target Audience.I'm going to aim my magazine at a younger, working class females. The age im going to aim for is 17-28.

I’m going to do this by using bright interesting colours, and having a creative house style that will appeal to females.

I will also feature things about fashion, activities and adverts that will appeal to a younger audience.

I will take most of my inspiration from magazines like “Absolute Brighton” and “Mayhem”
