Additional 12-coach EMU services On Sealdah-Lalgola section

62nd All India railway cricket championship inaugurated

Shri Satish Kumar, Additional General Manager, Eastern Railway inaugurated 62nd All India Railway Cricket Championship (League Stage) 2016-17, organized by Eastern Railway Sports Association at Eastern Railway Sports Complex, Behala on 27.03.2017. As many as 150 cricketers from six Zonal Railways and Production Units including Eastern Railway, Western Railway, Central Railway, Diesel Locomotive Works, Rail Wheel Factory and South Central Railway will participate in the All

In view of the overwhelming response of the passengers on introduction of broad gauge EMU service in Ranaghat-Lalgola section and to provide faster services, Eastern Railway introduced additional 12-coach EMU services between Sealdah and Lalgola stations of Sealdah Division. From 17.03.2017, additional 2 pairs of Sealdah-Lalgola passenger trains started running by EMU cars instead of old conventional coaches. For the convenience of the passengers, 30 minutes halt has been provided at Krishnanagar station while the journey time has also been reduced from end to end. It is stated that as a step towards further improvement of passenger amenity, Eastern Railway introduced broad gauge EMU service in Krishnanagar-Lalgola section of Sealdah Division w.e.f. March 08, 2017 while

the electrification work of the said section was completed earlier. These broad gauge EMU coaches have more passenger carrying capacity than that of old conventional coaches. The capacity of a 12-coach EMU is almost twice than that of a 8-coach MEMU rake. A 8-coach MEMU rake can accommodate 1368 passengers whereas a 12-coach broad gauge EMU can accommodate 2512 passengers. Naturally, it will serve passengers especially during the peak hours where more number of passengers can ride comfortably in this 12-coach EMU in comparison to an 8-coach conventional rake. These coaches are also more airy with improved lighting facilities. In addition, the present Sealdah-Rampurhat Passenger (63141/63142) also started running with MEMU cars replacing conventional coaches.

ER completed five double line projects during this fiscal while eleven are on the anvilEastern Railway has successfully commissioned five double line projects for further improvement of traffic and passenger amenity over its jurisdiction. The projects already commissioned during 2016-17 are : Sagardighi-Azimganj Cabin, Dakshin Barasat -Lakshmikantapur, Palassey-Jiaganj, Azimganj-Manigram and Sandalia-Champapukur. Moreover, construction of eleven double lines in different routes are in progress and nearing completion. These are : Sainthia-Tarapith 3rd line, Tarapith-Rampurhat 3rd line, Liluah-Dankuni 3rd line, Dankuni-Bhattanagar, Mandarhill-Dumka-Rampurhat, Katwa-Bazarsau, Dankuni-Chandanpur 4th line, Boinchi-

Shaktigarh, Bandel-Boinchi, Pirpainti-Bhagalpur and Bazarsau-Azimganj. Apart from these, two gauge conversion works are also under active progress. In the Barddhaman-Katwa gauge conversion (51.52 km), the narrow gauge section of Barddhaman-Balgona (25 km) has already been converted to broad gauge and the remaining stretch from Balgona to Katwa (26.52 km) is expected to be commissioned shortly. In the Ahmedpur-Katwa (51.92 km) gauge conversion, the stretch between Ahmedpur-Pachandi (39.62 km) has already been commissioned for goods traffic and the balance stretch from Pachandi to Katwa (12.60 km) is planned for commissioning very soon.
