of bramble, (Rubus fruticosus L.) bordering a laneway c 10m from a garden in which a mercury vapour moth trap was used between 2230 and 0030 hours on the previous night. Wind direction and force at the time was SW 2, but it had Veered to NW 4

when the specimen was taken.

Total wingspan measured 114 mm, the forewing from apex to thorax being 53 mm. From the base of the palp to the tip of the abdomen measured 50 mm.

Forewings were mid-gray, speckled with darker shades and clouded more dark at

midwing; the medial third was bordered inwardly by two curved lines, and outwardly by an intermittent paler line with two small pale stigmata below the mid-costa. Two black streaks bisected the medial area, almost joining a zig-zagging black line which terminated at the apex in a double wavy line. Hind wings were whitish-gray with a

pinkish blush, with two black bands in the basal area?the inner one forming a double band at midwing and with; a further band between it and the outer margin.

Thin lines of alternate pale gray and white ran between the apex and inner angle of the forewing, and the apex and anal angle of the hindwing. Head, collar, thorax and lappets' colour were mid-gray as with forewing. The abdomen at the

widest point measured 13 mm and had a broad gray band along it separating a series of black and deep-pink bands on each flank, each pink band having a narrow white line dividing it from the black band, at the thorax end only. Live weight was 2.78

gm. Identification of the specimen was confirmed by Mr. J. Heath, Biological

Records Centre, Monks Wood, England, and it is now in the possession of Mr. E. J. Pilcher, Clonmel, Co. Tipperary.

Note: Statistics are rounded up to the nearest unit in each case.

TANYMASTIX STAGNALIS (L.) NEW TO BRITAIN AND IRELAND In August 1974, whilst taking part in a Brathay Exploration Group expedition

to Western Ireland, I discovered very large numbers of the fairy-shrimp Tanymastix stagnalis (L.) in part of Rahasane furlough W of Craughwell, Co. Galway (M 4618).

It appears that this is the first record of this species (Crustacea: Branchiopoda: Anostraca) for Britain or Ireland. It is also likely that it is the first record of any Anostracan from Irish freshwaters.

A paper on the observed distribution of the species and its basic ecology is in preparation.

I am grateful to Dr G. Boxshall, British Museum (Natural History), for help with the identification of the species.

BOTANICAL NOTES

ORNITHOPUS PERPUSILLUS L. IN CO. CARLOW While working the foothills of Blackstairs Mountain at Knockroe, Co. Carlow

(H 13), S8249, a number of plants of Ornithopus per pusillus were observed growing among granite rocks in grass fields.

This appears to be the first recorded site for the species in Co. Carlow. A voucher specimen has been deposited in DBN.
