Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome back to term 2. I hope that you managed to have a relaxed and enjoyable Easter break, and spend some quality time as a family at home. It certainly has been a challenging and unprecedented time in education, and we have been very grateful to our families who have been able to support the Government’s social distancing strategy by keeping their child at home through this time. We also understand that some families are continuing to work and have needed to send their child to school and it is great that we have been able to support these families.

Update on school operations for term 2You will be aware that the Department of Education has released their plan for the phased managed return of students to school this term. I have included a copy of the plan in this newsletter for your reference. Phase 1 of this plan starts on Monday next week, May 11, where students will return to school one day each week and continue learning at home for the other four days each week. Families were contacted by class teachers last week to discuss this plan and access to the learning materials available online and it was great to get your feedback.

We have now confirmed, via email, attendance days for all families that said they would like their child to participate in the phased managed return to school from next week. A copy of the letter that was emailed to families has also been posted to you. If you indicated that you wanted your child to participate in the phased managed return of students from next week and have not received confirmation of their attendance day, please contact the school as soon as possible.

Under Phase 1 of the Department’s plan, around 25% of students will be on site at school on any day. Students attending school will complete the same work that students at home are completing. Students at school will not be in their regular classes or necessarily with their regular class staff. Mixed class groupings with the staff rostered on duty at school will supervise students and provide support with learning, mealtimes, and hygiene routines as appropriate for your child.

The health and safety of our students and staff are our priority and as such we are continuing to follow the strict hygiene guidelines recommended by the Department of Health and Department of Education. Increased cleaning of high touch surfaces across the school is also occurring throughout the day. If your child is unwell or has any cold or flu like symptoms, please do not send them to school.

Learning at homeThis term our learning at home materials have been adapted based on the feedback that we received from families at the end of last term and the beginning of this term. A more structured approach has been adopted with interactive weekly timetables for K-6 students and 7-12 students. These timetables have links embedded that take you straight to the appropriate resource, website, video or shared learning page so you can access the learning materials much more easily.

Thank you to those families that have shared photos of their child engaged in the learning at home activities. We have loved seeing these and sharing them with our school community via social media. If you would like to share any photos or a short video of your child engaged in the learning at home activities, please email them to your child’s class teacher. I would also like to thank staff who have adapted quickly to provide creative and engaging learning experiences for our students in a whole new way. If you need any support or assistance to access the learning at home materials, please speak to your child’s class teacher or contact the school, we are happy to help.

As plans and advice from the Department of Education are updated regularly, we will keep you informed of any changes and advice regarding progressing through the phases of the managed return of students to school.

We look forward to seeing more students begin to return to school next week.

Kind regards,Greg WoodPrincipal

CHAPLAIN CHATS ...Mother’s Day is coming up on 10 of May. And I think it’s a day with mixed feelings for many people. For me personally, I get to acknowledge how fortunate I am to have a mum who invested in me, and still supports me. I am also lucky enough to have kids of my own who take the opportunity to thank me for my investment in them. I know that there are many of you who share this day in a similar way.

For some people however, this is not their experience. Some of us have lost our mothers, some of us don’t have a great relationship with our mothers and still others grew up without a mother figure. And I think it’s important that we acknowledge this.

Whatever the case is, I think Mother’s Day can be a time where we celebrate the people who influenced us, supported us, showed us kindness, encouraged us and helped us along the way. And if you dont believe you’ve had that in your life then maybe you can be the person you needed when you were younger for someone else.

During May, I am also hosting on the Chaplain’s page (https://www.facebook.com/events/2594892927281809/) a Mindful May Challenge. I will be sharing 31 ways to encourage more mindfulness into your lives. Please feel free to like the page, join in and contribute to the group, research, watch the videos, and practice your own mindfulness.

Learning at SchooLLook at the fun we had in Library at school this week. Gina read us ‘Are you my mother?’ We also enjoyed art and craft. Some of us decorated unicorns after watching Melody read us ‘Thelma the Unicorn’, while others made a wonderful tree using circles for flowers.

Our students have been enjoying learning at home. Some have been creating some beautiful craft. The students have been particulary enjoying the Creative Engagement lessons that the teachers have put together.
