CIRQUE DU SOLEIL RETURNS TO MALLORCA WITH ‘DRALION’

Back in Mallorca, the world famous Cirque du Soleil will be presenting another of its signature productions Dralion at the Palma Arena this week. Acclaimed by nearly 11m people worldwide, the show premiered in 1999 in Montreal, Canada. After many years performing under the big top, Dralion is now presented in arenas around the world, with the same quality performance. Fusing the 3,000 year-old tradition of Chinese acrobatic arts with the multidisciplinary approach of Cirque du Soleil, Dralion draws its inspiration from Eastern philosophy and its never-ending quest for harmony between humans and nature. The show’s name is derived from its two emblematic creatures: the dragon, symbolizing the East, and the lion, symbolizing the West. In Dralion, the four elements that govern the natural order take on a human form. Air is blue; water is green; fire is red; earth is ochre. Bearing the unmistakable signature of Cirque du Soleil and featuring 50 international acrobats, gymnasts, clowns, musicians and singers, Dralion’s performers defy the laws of nature as they deliver a thrilling show. Bridge Tournament in the North From Holly Venneman

For nine consecutive years, Alcanada summer resident, Nini Alomar has organized an island-wide bridge tournament for international players at the Alcanada Golf Restaurant. Many of the players are year-round residents of Northern Mallorca, others are summer residents, while others travelled from distant corners of the island to enjoy the magnificent views and stimulating competition. This year´s tournament dinner was sponsored by Blevin´s Franks and a portion of the participation fee went to make a €1000 donation to Mallorca Sense Fam. In total, 84 competitors participated and,

after the prize giving, all enjoyed a delicious dinner prepared by Chef Ricardo Suárez. This year´s winners were: North/South: Rosario Matosas/Maria Moreto East/West J. Alf. Vidal/Mar Catany Second place: North/South Sra. Álvarez Merino/Sra. Alomar. East/West Denis Salembier/Mme Salembier.

Alcúdia’s surplus rises to 26 millionAlcúdia town hall has closed its accounts for 2013 and announced a €26m budget surplus, property taxes in Alcúdia having risen by over 50% since 2010. Opposition parties have criticised the administration for not having undertaken investments in 2013 that it said it would and for allowing the budget for fairs and fiestas to be exceeded while that for social services was not.

Muro presses for new sewage plant Muro town hall has made clear that it expects the proposed new sewage treatment plant in Son Bauló to go ahead. The regional environment ministry has approved the plan but Santa Margalida town hall opposes it, arguing that there should be a study to see if the current plant - in Albufera - can be expanded. Playa de Muro and Can Picafort share the Albufera plant at present, but under the new scheme hotels in Playa de Muro paid for land to be acquired so that the Son Bauló plant could be built. Muro town hall says that the Albufera plant now has to operate beyond its original capacity and that it is in any event a high-risk facility, given that any leaks would seriously affect the eco-system in Albufera.

The Birracruzis rowOn Saturday (30 August), Pollensa town will stage the Birracruzis pub crawl which had, until this year, been held in Inca, objections from residents and the church there having led to the need to find an alternative location. The row surrounding its taking place in Pollensa centres on what opposition parties believe to be a contradiction in town hall policy towards drinking in public and on what family associations argue is an unwelcome link between alcohol and entertainment which sends out the wrong message to children. These associations have also expressed concerns that minors will be able to partake in the pub crawl, concerns which the organisers have rejected. Some 700 people are expected to participate in the Birracruzis, a celebration of beer, which will start at 9.30am and which will last for some four hours before moving on to a lunch at the old football ground.

La Font confusion continuesThe confusion about the status of the urbanisation of La Font in Pollensa continues. Several owners of properties complained that they had not known about a meeting called by the town hall to hear draft proposals from the town hall

for an investment of some three million euros to provide services which are currently not being delivered. The case of La Font goes back many years, one owner having taken the town hall to court three years ago for its historic failure (from the 1990s) to complete provisions to the urbanisation. The investment, it would seem, would require special payments by property owners, which in many cases would be beyond their means.

Can Picafort wants its ducks backThe annual release of ducks (rubber ones) and their capture by swimmers at the Can Picafort fiestas this month went off without incident, i.e. there were no live ducks released. However, Santa Margalida town hall, which has always reluctantly agreed to an amendment to the animal protection law which banned the release of real ducks, is still making a case for the real ducks to return. The town hall is basing its argument on a

definition of “tradition” involving animals. If a tradition is more than one hundred years old, then animals can be involved. Now that the Can Picafort ducks tradition has reached its 75th anniversary, the town hall wants the law amended again so that the tradition threshold is reduced to 75 years.

PSM member in Pollensa has to pay his fineMiquel Amengual, a member of the PSM Mallorcan socialist party in Pollensa, has learned that he must pay a 3,000 euros fine that was levied following incidents during a visit to the town by Balearics president José Ramón Bauzá in 2012. Amengual was specifically charged with disobedience for not having shown his identity card when he was required to. Mayor Tomeu Cifre, despite being from the PP, has said that he regrets that the fine has been imposed.

Linea VerdeYou may have seen the Linea Verde posters around town but did you know that this service is a way of communicating directly with the council? Residents can report any incident or damage in their neighbourhood through the web and mobile app. Within the council, the Linea Verde system provides a powerful intranet through which officers can track the status and resolution of reports. First download the Linea Verde app on your mobile. When you come across something

you would like to report open the app and select the type of incident (the system automatically detects the location), then take a picture, include an optional comment and the council is notified. The most common categories of incidents are litter, street cleaning, problems with benches, signage, rodents and pigeons. You no longer have to walk past overflowing bins, or graffiti feeling powerless, instead you can report it to the council and keep an eye on its progress as the council deal with the problem.

Treat Yourself! Chocolate Heaven In Palma

Palma is calling! As summer draws to a close, a day-trip to the city is a great idea. Once you get off the bus (the 9.30 from Pollensa gets you there just

as the shops open), Can Joan de S’aigo is a mandatory stop for your elevenses. This café is over 300 years old and is the original ice-cream and chocolate parlour. Locals go there regularly as do tourists en masse as part of their tour. The Chocolate a la Taza is the best you’ll find, as are

the ensaimadas. The ice creams are well worth a stop for and you can take them away. Although famous for chocolate, ensaimada and buns, the (very cheap) menu also offers coca and other traditional savouries. But what makes Can Joan de Saigo such a gem is the feel of the place. The original Gordiola chandeliers, the worn tiled floor and elaborate tiled wall sign, the bent wood chairs and marble table tops, the waistcoated waiters all combine to create a superb step back in time.

Can Joan de Saigo, Carrer de Can Sanç, Palma. 971 71 07 59

A recent video to hit the island’s social media buzz was the video released by Evo Magazine which celebrated Mallorca’s Best Road in the World. Watching the brand new Porsche unleash its power on the Formentor and Sa Calobra roads captures the hearts of many car lovers and Mallorca fans. But it is not always just for fun, car manufacturers use these roads all the time. Kept tightly under wraps, pre-launch models are shipped here for test-driving on these famous roads.

And for these exquisite roads we have Antonio Parietti to thank, one of the most tenacious figures in improving access to the Serra de Tramuntana. Parietti (1899-1979) was the head of the Provincial Government’s Engineering and Roads Department, and chairman of Foment del Turisme, an organization dedicated to the promotion of tourism. As part of the Local Roads Plan, aimed at adapting existing roads for motor vehicles, he personally supervised two major projects in the Serra de Tramuntana: the 1925 road between Puerto Pollensa and Formentor, which allowed Adan Diehl to build his famous hotel, and the 1933 road to Sa Calobra.

Remarkable in his tenacity, instead of being overwhelmed by what stood in his way, Parietti observed the Tramuntana winds and understood that where the slopes were too steep he made a curve, when rock stood in the way he would remove part of the cliff and place the waste where it was needed. Work started on the construction of the Sa Calobra road in 1928, it was completed six years later. A technical feat at the time, a difference in altitude of over 800m had to be overcome, using 12km of winding road. The most difficult stretch was the 270º bend known as “Nus de la Corbata”. In total, over 31,000 cubic metres of rock and earth had to be moved and the terraced walls on which the road rests were built by hand.

Both were built for tourism purposes, not to unite existing towns and villages but to offer visitors access to two unique spots that have become famous precisely because of these roads. Now Sa Colabra is on the hit list of many hundreds of cyclists who visit the island and is Team Sky’s unofficial pre-season testing ground. As one amateur cyclist George Scott wrote on his blog, roadcyclinguk.com, “Having climbed the short col to reach the summit of Sa Calobra, the descent begins and a 360 degree hairpin flyover sets the tone. From there the mountain drops away beneath you and series of hairpins, stacked one on top of another, unravel but there’s little time to enjoy the view. It’s a white-knuckle descent – part thrilling, part terrifying – and sensory assault, the wind rushing through the vents in my helmet as I plunge towards the sea. Each hairpin is a test of nerve and requires heavy braking, before a short sprint to get back up to speed, only to repeat the process.”

Mallorca’s “Best Road in the World” Shoes are pretty prominent

in Mallorca but one that really stands out is Lotusse. Produced in Inca for more than 130 years, Lotusse was the brainchild of ‘Mestre’ Antoni Fluxà. He assembled the best artisans of the island and opened his first workshop in 1877, his ambition from the beginning was to create Europe’s best footwear. It has grown and there are now 11 workshops and 5 factories producing one of Mallorca’s most luxurious brands. Now managed by the family’s fourth generation, Antonio and Juan Antonio Fluxà keep the passion and enthusiasm for perfection alive.

Employing the Goodyear system, since Mestre Fluxà started, it takes more than 300 stitches with a thread of eight ends soaked in

resin to join the sole of the shoe with the insole without perforating it. Not satisfied with just this, another technique, the Goodblake system is a mixed exterior stitch made with a Blake machine backstitch, meaning Lotusse shoes can

be worn on a rainy day. The shoemaking

process, perfected over the 133 years, takes four days and more than 60 artisans to

carry out the 120-130 manual operations.

Using the best materials and time-honoured skills, Lotusse shoes feature classic styles with a quirky character, take the multi-coloured brogues for example. Located just down the road, shopping for a pair of Lotusse will reward you with excellent shoes and you’ll be supporting a Mallorcan high-end brand. www.lottusse.com

Ask Aunty Marga ...Dear Aunty Marga,

My townhouse fronts right onto a through road of the Old Town which means I have to clean dog’s urine fairly frequently. (During fiesta time even human pee.) What can I do to prevent

them from considering using my front wall or step as a public toilet?Disgruntled from Pollensa This is a horrible issue that we have to deal with on a daily basis. Pour diluted bleach from a watering can to clear it (and the smell) away. As for prevention, try placing a full bottle of water outside your door. I wouldn’t like to say it is a dead cert but some people swear by it.

They say the light reflecting off the bottle keeps them away, much like CDs hanging in a window deter flies. As for the humans, use the biggest bottle of water possible and pour it over them.

This scenic route is a loop which we start and finish at the charming Bonaire marina in Alcudia. For those who are unfamiliar with this spot, Bonaire is a peaceful residential area just minutes from Alcudia old town. The beautiful marina is small and unpretentious and the port’s restaurant, El Cocodrilo, is a popular eating place for its location by the sea and its delicious fish dishes. We run through the Bonaire development and out, crossing the road and running past a bar called Can Tomeu. We follow the winding country road into Alcudia old town passing the bullring on our left and run past the police station on the right taking the turning towards Barcares where we run along the back road parallel to the sea. At the end, we turn and run back along the seafront over a stretch of firm sand and paved paths, following the coast all the way, to an area of rugged coastline which makes for stunning scenery along with far-reaching sea views. We run through a small area of woodland and out the other side passing a couple of delightful coves in Mal Pas where locals relax during the summer months and from here, Bonaire marina comes back into view. At the marina we stop and take a stroll along the sea wall admiring the fishing boats and leisure crafts to our left and the sparkling blue Med to the right, and feeling good after an invigorating workout by the sea.

Swim Training Techniques:

Side Kick: kick on one side with one arm out in front of you in the water. Keep the extended arm relaxed. Keep head under water coming up for breath. This drill will make you more comfortable on your side, encouraging body rotation.

Arm Side Kick: kick on one side with one arm out in front of you in the water. Bring the other arm forward in a freestyle stroke to head level. Pull down back to your side. Come up to breathe. This drill develops front-quadrant arm timing. Pause Swimming: while kicking on your side, bring the other arm forward in a freestyle stroke to head level. Pause in that position while kicking. Pull the other arm to complete the stroke and roll your body all the way around to the other side (180 degree turn). Repeat as many times as possible breathing regularly. This drill encourages body rotation and front-quadrant arm timing.

This training programme is from Guillem Ramon, Sports Director of Flow Fitness and Director of the 5km Travesia Son Serra de Marina, which was held on 26th July. The training plan is based on 3 days a week of training (leaving a day of rest in between). Before you take on the plan, you should be able to swim 1km non-stop in open water fairly comfortably. You should have experience in choppy water and are comfortable sighting and can swim in a fairly straight line.

For more information on open water swim training or triathlon training, including Try the Tri day camps, contact Marsha Mars at Flow Fitness. www.flowfitnesscompany.com • 671 118 243.

In the season’s opener last Saturday, Mallorca suffered a defeat but there were encouraging signs for Head Coach Karpin and General Manager Aouate. Mallorca looked solid but without a real cutting edge. New striker Scepovic was not in the squad as he has barely trained with his new teammates. Pau Cendros involuntarily turned a corner into his own net and after the break

Oscar scored again for the home side from a corner – clearly defending corner kicks will be on the agenda at the training ground this week! Cendros atoned for his earlier error by scoring from yet another corner. Marco Asensio hit the post in the final minutes as the islanders finished strongly.

The first home game is this Sunday 31 August against Las Palmas from Gran Canaria with a 9 pm kick off. Mallorquinista is looking forward to the match with cautious optimism – expect more news and match reports in the next issue of TOTN.

Off-field activities have recently dominated the news coming from Son Moix Stadium. To sum up these astonishing events, some sort of chronological order is called for. Following the well-received appointment of “Nanu” Soler as head coach another former player equally popular with fans, Vicente Engonga was appointed as his assistant. The new management recruited several young players and the team seemed to be taking shape with a couple of good performances in hastily arranged friendly matches. That is when the wheel really started to spin. Former goalkeeper Dudu Aouate who played the last three games of last season suddenly announced that he had agreed to buy the shares of Serra Ferrer and Biel Cerda which would give him control of the club. His previous offer several weeks before, had been rejected almost out of hand. After a board meeting Aouate was appointed ‘General Manager’, which is a position unheard of in Spanish football. He then immediately sacked Nanu and Engonga and appointed Valery Karpin as head coach on the eve of the prestigious City of Palma Trophy tie

against Getafe. Karpin is a former Celta Vigo player who had a scathing relationship with Mallorca fans during his playing days. He was, until recently, manager of Spartak Moscow and allegedly has ties with Roman Abramovich the owner of Chelsea. Karpin was mildly booed by the fans during the game with but in contrast, expressed their support for Aouate. A 2-1 victory certainly helped matters. The sting in the tail is that despite all Aouate’s changes, he has not formally taken over the

shareholding or indeed paid for the shares as he awaits the results of due diligence investigations by accountants.

Cerda has said openly that he will sell to anyone who comes up with the right amount of money. Everyone is waiting with bated breath and hoping that Dudu comes up with the goods.

On the field there has been an enormous turnover of players. High wage earners Alfaro and N´Sue have been

moved on to Greece and Middlesbrough respectively – one wonders how Emilio N´Sue is coping with the change of climate in the northeast of England. In the City of Palma Trophy, the 20-man squad featured only three regular players from last season. There have been thirteen departures and eleven arrivals. The most promising recruits appear to be the strike duo of Marco Scepovic (Serbian) and “Fofo”. How long it will take for all these players to gel is pure speculation
