The Barrie Baycats had their annual Military Night

this past 20 July 2018 at Coates Stadium, hosting numerous military personnel from Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Borden, and cadets who are currently training at Blackdown Cadet Training Centre. The ceremonial first pitch was thrown by CFB Borden’s Base Commander Colonel (Col) Andrew Atherton. Barrie came back from a 7-0 deficit in the

second inning to win the game with a final score of 16-14. This win gave the Barrie Baycats their eighth straight, with a 22-8 record for the season. The Baycats have won the championship title every year since 2014, and it doesn’t look like they’re slowing down!

On Saturday 30 June 2018, a special flag

dedication was held at the Farewell Gardens Park, located at the corner of County Road 10 and Mill Street.

Those in attendence were the Angus Horticultural Society, Royal Canadian Legion Branch 499 Angus, Essa Historical Society, Angus Lions and Lioness, “Artisan Streetscapes” owners Cindy and John Purtill, past Essa Mayor David Guergis, present Essa Councillors Sandi Macdonald, Keith White and Ron Henderson.

It was an extremely hot

morning with blue skies, strong sunlight and a slight breeze. Members lowered Canada’s 150th birthday flag, raised a new Canadian flag, sang “Oh Canada” and placed a plaque depicting the occasion in front of the sugar maple tree.

Two park benches were also placed for comfortable seating with a plaque on one reading “Donated by the Angus Horticultural Society - June 30, 2018” and the other reads “In Dedication to the Residents of Angus - June 30, 2018”.

This park was originally created and dedicated to the residents of Angus by the

Horticultural Society and Mayor Guergis in 2002. It is known as the “Farewell Gardens”.

Many trees have since been planted “In Memory” of loved ones with special plaques gracing several trees.

A maple tree was planted and a 30 foot flag pole was installed in 2017 to celebrate Canada’s 150th Birthday.

Thank you to everyone who braved the hot temperatures and helped to further enhance another beautiful park in Angus for all to enjoy.

This fall, Georgian College will welcome approximately 1,350 new international students across Barrie, Orangeville, Orillia, Owen Sound and South Georgian Bay campuses. These students need welcoming places to live. The college is encouraging local families to participate in its Homestay program, or to list furnished rental units on places4students.com.

While the college welcomes traditional rentals, students in the Homestay program expect to learn about life in Canada – and adjust to their new community – with the help of host families. They’re looking to experience typical Canadian family dynamics, make new friends, and improve their English.

Staples have hosted several international students through the Homestay program. They have seven children, but six are grown and have moved away. “We were so used to having children around – and a full house. It was just a no brainer,” explained Maureen. “I get to have new daughters and new sons, from all over the world.”

The Staples are currently hosting two Georgian students from South America. Aurora Abigail Gavilanes Vargas is a 22-year-old from Quito, Ecuador. She’s working toward a career in international business. Johanna Ogliastri Herrera, a 30-year-old from Bogota, Columbia, is a professional veterinarian hoping to start a sustainable farm. She’s studying Environmental

Technology. Aurora has been staying

with the Staples for two years. Johanna has been there for a little over a month. “I feel like this family is like my culture – we get along very well,” said Aurora. Johanna agreed. “I haven’t been here too long, but it feels like a year. I like being here. It’s so comfortable.”

Both women are thinking of getting tattoos to mark their Canadian experiences. Aurora is considering a maple leaf, Johanna a white fox or a wolf.

“When you make the decision to welcome an international student into your home, you’re giving them a head start on their transition into Canadian life,” explained Marina Tomchak, who manages

international student housing at Georgian. “Students require support, but many host families gain so much more than they give. Some build friendships that last a lifetime.”

Homestay students pay $450 to $850 monthly, depending on which zone

the home is in and whether hosts provide meals. Hosts must provide a furnished private bedroom, as well as access to laundry machines, kitchen and bathroom facilities, and Wi-Fi. Hosts opting to feed their guests must provide food for three nutritious meals every day.

Anyone interested in becoming a Homestay host should apply at whyihost.canadahomestaynetwork.ca. People with furnished rooms who don’t wish to host can list their rental units on places4students.com or send an email togcintlhousing@georgiancollege.ca.

Coming off a fresh 6-1 win over Trenton, Canadian Forces Base

(CFB) Borden women’s soccer team faced off against CFB Kingston on 19 July 2018.

Playing without two of their key players, Pte Caroline Boucher and Cpl Marilyn Cote, the team had to overcome a huge loss before the start of the game.

Kingston jumped out to an early lead, however Borden displayed good ball handling and passing skills resulting in many opportunities. The entire women’s team exhibited hustle plays and no lack of effort, chasing balls down and refusing to give up. Borden dominated the first half with time of possession and shots on goal, yet the score remained 1-0 for Kingston. Despite an all-out assault, Kingston’s defence kept Borden off the score sheet.

The second half was more of the same with Borden dominating possession. #3 Pte Ritu Jacob displayed superior speed by outrunning most of the Kingston team to chase down an errant pass. #14 Lt Fronia Durnford attempted a midfield kick that grazed over the top of the net, and also had a controversial shot on goal not called by officials although it appeared to cross the line. Borden had other scoring chances thereafter but the Kingston goalie made impressive acrobatic saves, denying shots that looked as if they were destined to strike the back of the net.

Kingston then threatened with a corner kick which Borden had difficulty clearing out and #20 Lt(N) Kelsey Chang made them pay the price by scoring, making it 2-0 Kingston, which ended up being the final score.

Borden’s head coach Sgt Kevin Brown consoled his team after the game telling them, “the score didn’t reflect how you played or the outcome.” He then asked his team to share from their perspective on the field to which Lt Jocelyn Coe responded, “we played well and were in control but just didn’t finish”.

Capt Amy Godwin shared that in light of losing two of their best players, “the tournament is showing players that we need to be resilient on the field and off the field”. When asked about the remainder of the tournament, Durnford replied emphatically, “we are going to win, it’s only going to get better from here.”

Players of the game were #20 Lt(N) Chang from Kingston and #2 Lt Coe from Borden.

CFB Borden persevered and won the regional tournament on the women’s side. Congratulations!

On the men’s side CFB Kingston won the regional tournament and they along with the Borden’s women’s team will go onto represent Ontario in the CAF National Tournament 08 – 13 Sept.

Kingston a pris les devants très tôt, mais Borden a fait preuve d’un bon maniement du ballon et de bonnes habiletés de passe, ce qui lui a permis de saisir de nombreuses occasions. Toute l’équipe féminine s’est montrée très active et n’a pas ménagé les efforts, pourchassant le ballon et refusant d’abandonner. Borden a dominé la première mi-temps pour le temps de possession du ballon et les tirs au but, mais le score est resté 1-0 pour Kingston. Malgré une attaque générale, la défense de Kingston a empêché Borden de marquer.

La deuxième mi-temps s’est déroulée de la même façon, Borden dominant la possession du ballon. Le no 3, le Sdt Ritu Jacob, a fait preuve d’une vitesse supérieure en devançant la plupart des membres de l’équipe de Kingston pour poursuivre une passe égarée. Le Lt Fronia Durnford a tenté un coup de pied de milieu de terrain qui a frôlé le haut du filet, et a également eu un tir au but controversé qui n’a pas été annoncé par les officiels, bien qu’il semble avoir franchi la ligne. Borden a eu d’autres occasions de marquer par la suite, mais le gardien de but de Kingston a réalisé des arrêts acrobatiques impressionnants, bloquant des tirs qui semblaient destinés à frapper le fond du filet. Kingston a ensuite menacé d’un coup de pied de coin que Borden a eu de la difficulté à dégager et le Ltv Kelsey Chang (no 20) leur a fait payer le prix en marquant, ce qui a porté la marque à 2 0 Kingston, qui est resté le score final.

L’entraîneur-chef de Borden, le Sgt Kevin Brown, a consolé son équipe après le match en leur disant que « le score ne reflétait pas la façon dont vous avez joué ou le résultat ». qu’à la lumière de la perte de deux de leurs meilleures joueuses, « le tournoi montre aux joueuses que nous devons faire preuve de résilience sur le terrain et en dehors du terrain ». Interrogée sur le reste du tournoi, Durnford a répondu avec détermination : « nous allons gagner, ça ne peut que s’améliorer à partir de maintenant ».

remporté le championnat du côté des femmes. Félicitations!

Du côté masculin, la BFC Kingston a remporté le tournoi régional et représentera l’Ontario au tournoi national des FAC du 8 au 13 septembre.

The silence of the scorching hot

morning of 13 July 2018 at Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Borden was broken by the peculiar growl of “Christine”, a white 1955 Dodge truck with incredible historical significance within the Corps of the Royal Canadian Electrical Mechanical Engineers (RCEME), which trundled unevenly but proudly across the Sicily parade square. Staff and students of the RCEME School assembled to bid a fond farewell to the outgoing School Command Team of Lieutenant Colonel (LCol) Jeff Spitzig and Chief Warrant Officer (CWO) Jeffrey Saunders, and provide a warm welcome to the incoming Commandant, LCol Yves Raymond and School Regimental Sergeant-Major, CWO Eric Drouin.

During their tenure, LCol Spitzig and CWO Saunders led the RCEME School through several important transformations including the move to a cutting edge schoolhouse, the dedication of the new building in the honour of Col Ritchie, and improvements to both the employment and training of the Army’s greatest technicians. LCol Spitzig will continue to provide leadership within the Corps while working with Director General Land Equipment Program, and CWO Saunders has been appointed the RCEME Corps Sergeant-Major.

While those assembled on parade waited eagerly to hear the parting words of wisdom of their leaders and to catch a glimpse of the incoming Command Team, the RCEME Colonel Commandant Brigadier General (retired) Brewer, the Corps Director Colonel Corriveau and the Corps Sergeant-Major Chief Warrant Officer Walhin were transported to the

parade square on significant vehicles. These included a M38 Reviewing Jeep, a Bison Mobile Repair Team vehicle and the prized “Christine”. Accompanied by CWO Hamilton the Combat Training Centre (CTC) Commander and Reviewing Officer, Colonel Errington, expressed the following to the outgoing Command Team:

“Command Teams set the culture, pace, and priorities but the work is on the strength and the work ethic of the people. It would be easy for me to stand up here and talk about the big items like course success, but I want to thank you for the small things that you think go unnoticed: your extra time with the people and their concerns, your caring leadership and mentorship that will be felt by those individuals, their families, and the soldiers they lead in the future.”

Staff of the RCEME School were recognized on parade for their outstanding achievements. The Canadian Forces Decoration was awarded to Captain (Capt) McBride, Master Corporal (MCpl) Boucher, MCpl Chaisson, MCpl Cooling, MCpl Lampron, MCpl Picard-Gagne, and MCpl Pinard. The CTC Commander’s

Commendation was awarded to Capt Goulet. Coins from the Director of the RCEME Corps were presented to Maj VanVolkenburg, Maj Duque, and Warrant Officer Gagnon.

The staff and students of the RCEME School wish the very best to LCol Spitzig and CWO Saunders as they depart for Ottawa, and proudly welcome the new Command Team of LCol Raymond and CWO Drouin. Arte et Marte.

matin caniculaire à la BFC Borden a été rompu par le grognement caractéristique de « Christine », un camion Dodge blanc de 1955 ayant une signification historique incroyable au sein du Corps du génie électrique et mécanique royal canadien (GEMRC), qui a lentement et inégalement traversé avec fierté le terrain de parade Sicile. « Les équipes de commandement établissent la culture, le rythme et les priorités, mais le travail repose sur la force et l’éthique de travail des gens. Il serait facile pour moi de prendre la parole ici et de parler de grands sujets comme le succès des cours, mais je tiens à vous remercier pour les petites choses qui, selon vous, passent inaperçues : votre temps additionnel consacré aux gens et à leurs préoccupations, votre leadership et votre mentorat bienveillants qui seront ressentis par ces personnes, leurs familles et les soldats qu’ils dirigeront à l’avenir. »

Le personnel de l’école du GEMRC a été reconnu lors du défilé pour ses réalisations exceptionnelles. La Décoration des Forces canadiennes a été décernée au capitaine (Capt) McBride, au caporal-chef (Cplc) Boucher, au Cplc Chiasson, au Cplc Cooling, au Cplc Lampron, au Cplc Picard-Gagné et au Cplc Pinard. La Mention élogieuse du commandant du CIC a été décernée au Capt Goulet. Les pièces du directeur du Corps du GEMRC ont été présentées au Major (Maj) VanVolkenburg, au Maj Duque et à l’adjudant (Adj) Gagnon.

Le personnel et les stagiaires de l’école du GEMRC souhaitent la meilleure des chances au Lcol Spitzig et à l’Adjuc Saunders alors qu’ils partent pour Ottawa et accueillent fièrement la nouvelle équipe de commandement du Lcol Raymond et de l’Adjuc Drouin. Arte et Marte.

On Friday, 20 July, 2018 Colonel

(Col) Atherton and Chief Warrant Officer (CWO) Charrette attended the the graduation of the first serial of general training cadets at Blackdown Cadet Training Centre(CTC).

The two-week course provided the 300 cadets on parade with an introductory summer training experience where they participated in a variety of activities from each specialty, including Drill and Ceremonial, Music, Marksmanship, and Expedition.

In his remarks, Lieutenant Commander (LCdr) Dermott, the Deputy

Commanding Officer for Blackdown CTC, thanked Col Atherton and CWO Charrette for attending. LCdr Dermmott spoke about how teamwork isn’t only a skill in the cadet program, but here, in our base community. He spoke about how Blackdown relies on the base community to provide advice, support, and specialized knowledge and skills to help make this training centre the great place it is for the cadets.

Speaking to the cadets, Col Atherton commended the cadets for what they had accomplished in completing the course. He spoke about how the parade was a

culmination of demanding training, hard work and dedication. He also thanked the parents for supporting their cadet through the process; for answering the phone calls, listening to their struggles and providing encouragement when necessary.

In facing new challenges, Col Atherton told the cadets about how they learned the importance of perseverance and team work, all of which, according to him, will serve them throughout their life.

Having finished their training at Blackdown for the summer and now heading home, Col Atherton challenged the cadets to continue to embrace and practise the pillars of loyalty, professionalism, mutual respect and integrity.

S’adressant aux cadets, le colonel Atherton a félicité les cadets pour ce qu’ils avaient accompli en terminant le cours. Il a parlé de la façon dont le défilé était l’aboutissement d’un entraînement exigeant, d’un travail acharné et d’un dévouement. Il a également remercié les parents d’avoir soutenu

leur cadet tout au long du processus. P our répondre aux appels téléphoniques, écouter leurs luttes et fournir des encouragements si nécessaire.

En faisant face à de nouveaux défis, le Col Atherton a expliqué aux cadets comment ils ont appris l’importance de la persévérance et du travail d’équipe. Tout ce qui, selon lui, les servira tout au long de leur vie. Ayant terminé son entraînement à Blackdown pendant l’été et maintenant rentrant chez lui, le Col Atherton a mis au défi les cadets de continuer à embrasser et à pratiquer les piliers de la loyauté, du professionnalisme, du respect mutuel et de l’intégrité.

July 20, 2018 – Borden, Ont. – National Defence / Canadian Armed Forces

Soldiers from the Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (RCEME) School will conduct an exercise in and around the outskirts of CFB Borden from July 20, 2018 to August 18, 2018.

Approximately 100 soldiers from the RCEME School will be familiarizing themselves with the conduct of military operations in a deployed context. They may be seen entering and exiting the gates around CFB Borden and driving around in convoys of eight to ten vehicles on the main roads immediately surrounding the base.

The soldiers will be armed, but any blank or pyrotechnic ammunition will only be used within the confines of CFB Borden.

This course is designed to enhance the knowledge of tactics and administration as it relates to Maintenance Units in the Canadian Armed Forces.

Giggles and cheers can be heard from

the children playing in the large bouncy castle that sets the family-fun theme for the annual CFOne Day that took place at Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Borden’s CANEX on July 20th, 2018.

A free BBQ was held for all to enjoy, with hot dogs, cake and popcorn. Pop and water were donated by Pepsi Co. which was welcomed by attendees on this hot summer day.

Vendors that hold partnerships with CANEX lined the building and were offering giveaways and demos to those in attendance.

Existing CFOne members could also take advantage of exclusive deals, online and in store.

Tom Bennett, Assistant store manager of CANEX CFB Borden says the day takes place to “celebrate the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) members, but also to celebrate the more than 1 million strong current card holders”. He goes on to say that “CANEX is celebrating our 50th year, so it’s really a double celebration.”

The CFOne card is the only card you need to access programs and services delivered by Canadian Forces Morale and Welfare Services(CFMWS). It provides you with access to both the CANEX Rewards Program (the program that rewards you for shopping at CANEX) and the CF Appreciation Program (the official discount program

of the Canadian Armed Forces community). In the future, it will also be used to access PSP programs and services, messes, specialty interest activities and more.

The card isn’t just for CAF members! It is extended to CAF families, and civilian staff too.

plaisir de tous, avec au menu hot dogs, gâteau et mais soufflé. Les boissons gazeuses et l’eau étaient une gracieuseté de Pepsi, une contribution bien accueillie par les participants en cette chaude journée d’été.

Les vendeurs ayant des partenariats avec CANEX étaient devant le bâtiment et offraient des cadeaux et des produits de démonstration aux

personnes présentes. Les titulaires de la carte UneFC pouvaient également profiter d’offres exclusives,

en ligne et en magasin.Tom Bennett, gérant

adjoint du magasin CANEX de la BFC Borden explique que la journée sert à « célébrer les membres des Forces armées canadiennes, mais aussi plus d’un million de détenteurs de cartes UneFC. » Il poursuit : « Avec CANEX célébrant son 50e anniversaire, c’est donc vraiment une double célébration. »

The summer brings with it a time of

relaxation and recharging but for some it is a time of anxiety and stress.

Many of you are new to the base after being posted in. Some of you are leaving Borden for a new chapter in your military life. With it brings many questions, “Will I find a place to live?” “Will I find a doctor?” “Will my family be ok?” “Will I enjoy my new position?”

It’s normal to have these concerns, after all we are all human. Letting these worries overcome you can be disastrous however.

The disciples had similar questions when

Jesus was taken to Heaven. They felt alone and scared but in fact they were never alone. In the last chapter of Matthew, Jesus tells the disciples and us, “I am with you always, even to the end of the world.” This group of men went into the world knowing the work they had to do was given by God. It was scary and dangerous but they went anyway knowing the promise that they would never be alone.

Whatever you are

facing, do it knowing that you are not alone. You are right where God wants you to be. If you are struggling, know that the promise Jesus made is a promise to you also; He will never leave nor forsake you. You are a child of God and He is your Father. No matter what you have done or where you are, know that God loves you unconditionally.

If you have any doubts, just look to the cross and

see how much God loves you. Peace.

L’été apporte un moment de détente

et de recharge, mais pour certains, c’est une période d’anxiété et de stress. Bon nombre d’entre vous êtes nouveaux à la Base et vous venez d’y être affectés. Certains d’entre vous quittent Borden pour un nouveau chapitre de votre vie militaire. Avec elle apporte beaucoup de questions, « Est-ce que je

vais trouver un endroit où vivre? », « Est-ce que je vais trouver un médecin? », « Est-ce que tout va bien aller pour ma famille? », « Est-ce que j’aimerai mon nouveau poste? ».

C’est normal d’avoir ces préoccupations, après tout, nous sommes tous humains. Il peut cependant être désastreux de laisser ces soucis vous envahir.

Les disciples avaient des questions similaires quand Jésus a été emmené

au ciel. Ils se sentaient seuls et effrayés, mais en fait, ils n’étaient jamais seuls. Dans le dernier chapitre de Mathieu, Jésus dit aux disciples et à nous : « Je suis avec vous tous les jours, jusqu’à la fin du monde ». Ce groupe d’hommes est allé dans le monde en sachant que le travail qu’ils devaient accomplir leur était confié par Dieu. C’était effrayant et dangereux, mais ils y sont quand même allés en sachant qu’ils ne seraient jamais seuls.

Peu importe ce à quoi vous faites face, sachez que vous n’êtes pas seul. Vous êtes là où Dieu veut que vous soyez. Si vous luttez, sachez que la promesse que Jésus vous a faite vous est également destinée; Il ne vous délaissera jamais et ne vous abandonnera jamais. Vous êtes un enfant de Dieu et Il est votre Père. Peu importe ce que vous avez fait et où vous êtes, sachez que Dieu vous aime inconditionnellement.

Si vous avez des doutes, regardez la croix et voyez combien Dieu vous aime. Que la paix soit avec vous.

From June 25 to July 11, the Total Health and Wellness Development

Team reached out to military and civilian Defence Team members across the country to get their opinions on health and wellness programs, to learn about specific challenges and opportunities for improvement, and to gather ideas for solutions.

Health and wellness touches every individual who is part of the Defence Team. It impacts our ability to deliver our mandate and be operationally effective. Prioritizing the men and women that make up the Defence Team is a top objective of Strong, Secure, Engaged (SSE). Efforts are underway to develop a more comprehensive approach to care that considers psychosocial well-being in the workplace, the personal dimensions of health, and the physical work environment.

To better inform the Total Health and Wellness Strategy (THWS), the Deputy Minister and the Chief of the Defence Staff directed Lieutenant-General Charles Lamarre, Commander of Military Personnel Command (MPC), to conduct an analysis of National Defence’s approach to health and wellness, and assess our members’ health and wellness needs.

“Total Health and Wellness is an initiative that puts the individuals at the forefront of our business. Our team’s consultation visits at bases and wings represents an opportunity for focus, realignment, and improved coordination across the institution. We are reaching out to our members to seek their input, providing them the opportunity to impact how we want to approach total health and wellness,” said LGen Lamarre.

The team conducted a two-day program in Esquimalt, Halifax, 15 Wing Moose Jaw, 22 Wing North Bay, Gagetown, Kingston, Valcartier, and Borden. Through these consultations, Defence Team members were introduced to the THWS initiative, and had a chance to provide feedback on the strategy.

The information gathered from these consultations will be consolidated to develop a national view of common opportunities and challenges that can be addressed by the Total Health and Wellness Strategy in order to improve individuals’ quality of living, life and job satisfaction, and engagement at work.

La priorisation des hommes et des femmes qui composent l’Équipe de la Défense est un objectif essentiel de la politique de défense Protection, Sécurité, Engagement (PSE), et on est en train d’élaborer une approche globalisée de soins tenant compte des aspects psychosociaux du bien être en milieu de travail, des dimensions personnelles de la santé et du milieu de travail physique.

Afin d’orienter la Stratégie de santé globale et de bien-être (SSGB), le sous-ministre et le Chef d’état-major de la Défense ont demandé au lieutenant-

général Charles Lamarre, commandant du Commandement du Personnel militaire (CPM), d’effectuer une analyse de la stratégie de la Défense nationale en matière de santé et bien-

être, ainsi qu’une évaluation des besoins de nos militaires à cet égard.

« Santé globale et bien-être est une initiative qui place les personnes au premier plan de nos activités. Les visites de consultation de notre équipe dans les bases et les escadres représentent une occasion d’orientation, de réaménagement et d’amélioration des mesures de coordination dans l’ensemble de l’organisation. Nous consultons nos membres pour recueillir leurs commentaires et leur donner la possibilité d’influer sur la façon dont nous voulons aborder la santé globale et le bien-être, » a déclaré le Lgén Lamarre.

L’équipe a mis en œuvre un programme de deux jours dans les sites suivants : Esquimalt, Halifax, 15e Escadre Moose Jaw, 22e Escadre North Bay, Gagetown, Kingston, Valcartier et Borden. Grâce à ces consultations, les membres de l’Équipe de la Défense ont eu l’occasion de connaître l’initiative et de partager leurs commentaires sur la strategie.

As a non-commissioned

member (NCM) I have often wondered where I stood within the military, trying to determine what it means to be in the “profession of arms”?

Recently I read an article in the Royal Canadian Air Force Journal, written by Chief Warrant Officer (CWO) Necole Belanger, on being a member of the profession of arms; a Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) CWO’s perspective. I found the article to be meaningful, powerful and moving.

One of her most thought provoking statements was “I am a professional within the profession of arms! Duty, Loyalty, Integrity, and Courage are no longer words that roll off my tongue when asked if I can name them; rather, they are standards of behavior that I do my utmost to live by, every day and in everything I do, whether in or out of uniform”. As I read this to myself; I realized that this ideology, this belief, is something that every NCM in any Canadian Armed Forces environment lives by and believes in.

The RCAF Academy provides leadership and management training, broadens awareness of RCAF heritage, and develops general service knowledge and professional attributes among non-commissioned members.

On 10th July 2018 at the RCAF Academy; CWO Belanger and her wife Judy Gaus proceeded to the reception area on the second floor where she was received by many members of 16 Wing. Framed on the wall hung her article, one in French the other in English; framed in black and gold. At the podium stood the Commandant of the Academy, CWO James Marshall. The room became silent as he began speaking, explaining the significant meaning of CWO Belanger’s article and how it relates to the RCAF Academy and leadership. As he stated “Learn the profession, practise the profession and lead the profession. All who leave these doors are emerging leaders within the profession of arms”.

CWO Belanger stood at the podium and stated “Never

could I have imagined that when I was writing this article that it would receive a place of prominence within these hallowed halls”. This article now hangs from the RCAF Academy’s wall, a fitting place of honour and respect. All future leaders will be able to read the article and the message within will be understood for decades.

Récemment, j’ai lu un article dans La Revue de l’Aviation royale canadienne, rédigé par l’adjudant-chef Necole Belanger où elle livrait son point de vue

d’adjudant-chef de l’Aviation royale canadienne (ARC) sur le fait d’appartenir à la profession des armes. J’ai trouvé qu’il s’agissait d’un article significatif, puissant et émouvant. L’une de ses déclarations les plus provocatrices est : « Je suis une professionnelle au sein de la profession des armes! “Devoir”, “loyauté”, “intégrité” et “courage” ne sont plus des mots que je formule machinalement

lorsqu’on me demande de les citer; ce sont plutôt des normes de comportement que je m’efforce de respecter, tous les jours et dans tout ce que je fais, que je porte l’uniforme ou non. » En lisant cela, je me suis rendu compte que cette idéologie, cette croyance, c’est quelque chose que tous les MR dans n’importe quel environnement des Forces armées canadiennes vivent et croient.

L’École de l’ARC dispense des cours de leadership et de gestion. Elle sensibilise plus en profondeur les militaires du rang au patrimoine de l’ARC et leur permet d’acquérir des connaissances générales et des qualités professionnelles. Le 10 juillet 2018, à l’École de l’ARC, l’Adjuc Bélanger et son épouse Judy Gaus se sont rendus à la réception au deuxième étage où elle a été reçue par de nombreux

Wouldn’t a person who devoted their life to the law and wrote many scholarly legal texts make a will to dispose of the large estate he had accumulated?

Between 1867 and 1870, Lord Edward St. Leonards wrote 2 wills and 8 codicils (or amendments to the wills). All were carefully tied together and stored in a locked box on the ground fl oor of his Boyle Farm estate in Surrey. When the Baron died in 1874, the box was opened , the codicils found, but the wills were gone (Sugden v. Lord St. Leonards, 1876).

When a will is lost the law presumes that the deceased destroyed it because he wanted it revoked. The English Court of Appeal did not apply this principle as it seemed so unlikely that Lord St. Leonards would destroy his will without making a new one. The will must have been taken by someone else.

Lord St. Leonards’ spinster daughter, Charlotte Sugden, was able to recreate

most of the lost wills, including an inheritance of about 25,000 Pounds for herself. In the process two of her four sisters were disinherited. Charlotte had acted as her father’s secretary. He read the wills to her on at least two occasions and she had carefully read them herself. Her honesty was unquestioned and her recollection of the wills, including the gift to herself, were confi rmed by references in the codicils and statements of the Baron who frequently discussed his estate plan

The wills’ fate remains a mystery. Charlotte, the sisters or the Baron’s male heirs all could benefi t if the will went missing; and maybe Lord St. Leonards knew what he was doing all along.

L’Adjuc Bélanger est ensuite montée sur le podium et a déclaré : « Jamais je n’aurais pu imaginer qu’au moment d’écrire cet article, il recevrait une place de choix dans ces salles sacrées. » L’article est maintenant accroché au mur de l’École de l’ARC, un lieu d’honneur et de respect. Tous les futurs dirigeants pourront le lire et le message qu’il contient sera compris pendant des décennies.
