Taking the LEAP: During All-

Staff Day, a committee

composed of faculty, CSEA

staff, and administrators

unveiled a new mentorship

program for college

employees called LEAP. The

name reflects what the

program wants participants to

accomplish: learn, empower,

advise and partner. The idea

is that everyone has

something to learn and

something to offer one

another. Andrew Masuda and

Bob Curry are co-chairing the

program with former dean

Dave Humphreys and his wife,

Deb, who will help with

implementation. Already, more

than 80 employees pledged to take the LEAP and join the new program. The committee will

host orientation meetings for the event.

An orientation was held on Jan. 24, and another is set for Tuesday, Jan. 30, from 4-5 p.m.

inside the large conference room in Human Resources.

Two meetings have been scheduled at the Lompoc campus on Wednesday, January 31:

10-11 a.m. in 5-111 at the Public Safety Training Complex

2-3 p.m. in 1-202 at the Lompoc Valley Center

The creative efforts of student artists enrolled in the Fine Arts program will be featured in the annual Fine Arts Student Art Show, on display in the Ann Foxworthy Gallery on the Santa Maria campus Jan. 24- Feb. 21. A reception for the artists will be held Wednesday, Feb. 14, at 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the gallery. The public is invited to meet the talented student artists and see their work.

The 100-plus works on display were created in a broad range of media taught on campus, including photography, drawing, mixed media, painting, digital arts, typography, graphic design, sculpture, and animation. Art gallery director Marti Fast says the show is a longtime tradition that allows visitors an opportunity to appreciate the creative thinking, imagination, and skill levels demonstrated by fine arts students whose work was selected by their instructors.

Bulldog Bow-WOW! will kick off the spring semester with free fun, food, entertainment, and information for all Allan Hancock College students. The events will be held from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7 at the Santa Maria campus Student Center, and Wednesday, Feb. 14 upstairs at bldg. 1 at the Lompoc Valley Center. Please encourage students to attend these events, which are sponsored by the Associated Student Body Government (ASBG). Questions? Call Stephanie Robb at the Santa Maria campus, ext. 3229, or Christine Grelck at the LVC, ext. 5215.

PCPA will present Arthur Miller’s thrilling dramatic

masterpiece, The Crucible, February 15-March 4 in

the Marian Theatre. A tale of the Puritan purge of

witchcraft in old Salem, Massachusetts, it is a gripping

historical play and a strikingly timely social parable for

today. Hancock staff and students can purchase tickets

at 40 percent off the adult ticket rate. Visit the PCPA box

office with your AHC ID for these specially-priced

tickets.

You are invited! Don’t miss the next Makerspace Open House on Friday, Feb. 2, from 1-4 p.m. in O-112 on the Santa Maria campus. Check out our new Degoma 3-D printers, see the laser engraver at work, or just take a minute to make yourself a unique button with our button maker. If you’re interested in attending, RSVP to Bob Mabry ([email protected]), Trevor Passage ([email protected]), or Susie Kopecky ([email protected]).

Kudos to Allan Hancock College Foundation Advancement Specialist Natalie Rucobo,

who was recognized in the Santa Maria Chamber of Commerce’s January edition of the

Chamber Connection!

Carney’s Coaches vs. Cancer: The college will host its annual Carney’s Coaches vs. Cancer

event Saturday, February 3, when the basketball teams host Ventura. The annual event raises

money for the Mission Hope Cancer Center that provides support and programs to local people

battling cancer and their families. The college renamed its event after Larry Carney, an assistant

coach of the women’s basketball team and five-time cancer survivor. The women’s game starts

at 3 p.m. with the men’s team following at 5 p.m. All ticket, commemorative t-shirt, and snack

bar sales that day will go to Mission Hope. Last year, the college donated more than $3,500.

Spring 2018 All-Staff Day

The 2018 President’s Leadership Academy

provided an update to all staff on Friday, January

19. Everyone was reminded to keep sharing their

Attitude of Gratitude by wearing their gratitude

challenge pin, sending a thank you note, and

posting what they are thankful for on a paw print.

Here’s how it

works:

We would

like to share

our attitude

of gratitude

with all of our

colleagues

and students at the college and spread this spirit throughout

the year. Our goal is to remind everyone in the Hancock

family how valued you are. It is the contributions of

everyone that makes Hancock a great place to work and

study. So, please share, challenge, display, and spread

your attitude of gratitude all year long!

Visit www.hancockcollege.edu/gratitude for details and to watch a video of a few of our staff and faculty sharing what they are grateful for at the start of the 2017-18 academic year. The update video shared at spring All-Staff Day is also posted to the web page.

Challenge yourself and others to keep an attitude of gratitude by wearing the official Attitude of Gratitude challenge pin. Challenge your colleagues to display their pin daily and use it as a conversation starter with students and each other.

Along with your challenge pin, you will receive a paw print. Display your bulldog pride and attitude of gratitude by writing down what you are grateful for and post your paw print somewhere visible in your office or work area.

Spread the attitude of gratitude by sending a thank you card to your colleagues and students, or even community members, family, and friends. Whether it’s the smallest act of kindness, or they saved the day, let

those you appreciate know it! Encourage your students to use the cards, too! Card stations are available throughout the Santa Maria campus in buildings G (Student Center), L North (Library entryway), N (Sports Pavilion lobby) and S (Community Education lobby), and at the Lompoc Valley Center (bldgs. 1 and PSTC), VAFB, and Santa Ynez Valley centers.

Share your attitude of gratitude with others by telling us

your story. Help us to create an invaluable archive of

Hancock stories about the purpose of the work you do

here. Share on social media with #AHCAttitudeOfGratitude

and/or contribute your gratitude statement in an upcoming

Favorite magazine: People

Favorite music: Acoustic rock

Favorite food: Mexican

Favorite quote: “You never know what you can do unless you try” – William Cobbett

Proudest accomplishment and/or what is most important in life to you: Volunteering

abroad was huge for me. Other than a trip to Mexico in college, I had never been out of the

country. I went to work in an elephant village Thailand by myself, and to Cambodia to teach

English. I will be volunteering abroad every year from now on, and in May 2018 will be

volunteering at an orphanage in Peru.

What person, past or present, do you admire most and why? I admire people who

overcome odds and make the most out of their lives. I also admire people who are empathetic

and giving of their time and hearts. There are so many beautiful people who fit into these

categories.

Is there anything else about yourself you would like to share? I love dancing, cooking, and

my two dogs, Rowdy (red lab) and Chico (chi-weener).
