Term 3 – Newsletter Number 9

Monday 14st September, 2015

Tena koutou katoa

Welcome back to another week. The term

is moving towards an inexorable

conclusion, with only two weeks

remaining.

Last week we had a serious incident at

School involving one student. The incident

was dealt with, everyone was kept safe, and

restorative practices put in place. Sadly

some members of the community have

misconstrued what occurred, and

unnecessarily, adding a negative aspect to

the incident. A huge thank you to those

parents who contacted the School, and

heard the whole (true) story.

Schools are in the business of dealing with

people, mainly young people, who come

from a wide range of backgrounds, and

who often live vastly different lives away

from School. When we come together as a

school however, we have certain values

and expectations that we live by. For some

students, these can be poles apart from the

beliefs they have grown up with, or those

they live by when not in School.

From time to time there can be a clash of

belief systems, and issues do arise.

Thankfully this happens infrequently, but it

does occur, as is the case in all schools.

That is reality. What is important is how

we deal with these situations when they

arise.

Our first priority is to ensure that we

provide learning opportunities for all

students, to enable them to realise their full

potential, in a safe environment. Our staff

and BOT are committed to this, but

occasionally our ability to accomplish this

is challenged.

-------------------------------------------------

We all lead very busy lives, and although

occasionally it is important to have time

out, and the opportunity to rest and

recuperate, it is crucial that students,

particularly those in years 9-13,

demonstrate increasing urgency in their

approach to learning and their studies.

NCEA Examinations begin in week 5 next

term, which is only 8 weeks away. For

those students sitting NCEA External

Examinations, time is rapidly running out -

the next few weeks are critical.

As aptly demonstrated by the efforts and

amazing successes of our Students through-

out the Year, including TAS Sports Teams,

preparation and hard work is required to

succeed. In short you get back what you

put in.

A major highlight last week was the Rotary

Dinner attended by the members of our

Student Leadership Team. This is an

annual activity, and one of the real

highlights of the year. At this meeting the

Students take on the allocated roles of the

Rotarians, and actually run the entire

Meeting. As is always the case, our leaders

did this with aplomb and confidence, and

thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

The Rotary Members are always extremely

responsive to our students, and are very

interested in them as people. The Students

are given an opportunity to talk about their

ambitions, goals, and future pathways. The

response from the Rotarians is always

positive, affirming, and very encouraging.

This Dinner is one example of a very

productive partnership that exists between

the School and Community Groups. As

well as the Dinner, the School assists

Rotary at Gumboot Day, and each year

Rotary donates Dictionaries to our Year 4

Students.

Starting tomorrow, and through until

Friday, our Year 12 Students are taking

part in a Leadership Camp at the Kawhatau

Outdoor Education Centre. The purpose of

this Camp is to expose these young people

to a number of situations that challenge

them, that take them out of their comfort

zone, to see how they work and cooperate

with others, to see first-hand how they

respond to the role of leadership, and to

encourage them to reflect candidly upon

their performance.

This Camp is an opportunity for those

students with real leadership potential to

step up, and provide an indication of their

ability to become School Leaders in 2016.

Have a great week.

Taihape Rotary Last Tuesday, the Student Leadership

Team attended the weekly Taihape Rotary

Club Meeting. This is an annual event, and

the students are provided with the

opportunity to run the meeting, sharing the

designated roles of the Rotarians.

The students were quite taken with the

formalities that comprise the Rotary

Meeting structure, and enjoyed filling the

various roles such as President (Head Boy

Bryan Santos), and Sergeant at Arms. Once

their initial nervousness dissipated, the

students warmed to the occasion, and the

meeting well and truly flowed.

As part of the Meeting the Students were

given an opportunity to speak about their

future goals and ambitions. The Rotarians

were hugely impressed with their

confidence, focus, and drive.

Future Pathways For Students planning to leave at the end of

the year, there are numerous pathways for

them to follow, and we have a number of

specialist staff to help coordinate the

leaving process. We have Deans, the career

advisor, and the Gateway/Star co-ordinator

with whom you can liaise.

These staff can help with CV writing,

applications for apprenticeships or jobs, as

well as future study and general advice, and

they also have contacts at Polytechnics and

Universities for students wishing to gain

further advice.

If students are planning to leave without

finishing NCEA Level 2 or 3 or University

Entrance, UCOL, and other Polytechnics,

offer courses for students to gain

specialised certificates and diplomas that

allow them to enter higher level courses in

future years.

More information regarding future

pathways can be found on the School

Website (www.tas.school.nz) then

following the path - Home > Education

for Years 9-13 Students > Leaving

School - The Next Step > Leaving

School.

For students wishing to enter degree

programmes at Polytechnics and

Universities, the following are the basic

entry requirements (however, some courses

require further prerequisites).

For students this year the minimum

requirements for University Entry is: -

Supporting Your Child The most important lessons your child

needs for success aren’t taught in the

Classroom, they’re taught at home.

Children’s performance in School has more

to do with parents, than with their natural

brainpower, or even their teachers.

One recent study claimed the parental

effect on exam results at 16 is 5 times

greater than any other factor. So what

should we be doing to maximise their

chances? This is one of 25 practical ideas

from the Next Solutions Magazine:

2. How are they sleeping? There is a

direct link between lack of sleep and

behaviour problems – one study in Israel

showing losing just one hour a night can

lower a child’s IQ. Many school age

children, especially teenagers, are sleep

deprived; one US Study showed they get at

least one hour less per night than 10 years

ago. Millpond Children’s Sleep Clinic

founder Mandy Gurney says children need

11 hours at age five, 10 and a half at 7, 10

hours at 9, 9 and a half at 11, and 9 hours at

14.

Mokai Patea Curriculum

Consultation The Board of Trustees has a Community

Goal to enhance the partnership between

the School, whanau, families, and the wider

community. Over a period of many years

the Iwi of Mokai Patea have developed an

Education Strategy.

The vision of this strategy is “Mokai Patea

enjoying educational success as Mokai

Patea” through his/her (the learners)

language, culture, and identity.

The School Values – Rangatiratanga,

Whanaungatanga, Wairuatanga, and

Manaakitanga - are encompassed within

the School, and the Mokai Patea Education

Strategy, to create a strong Mokai Patea

Learner.

Supporting Your Child @

Home: Numeracy Newspapers are filled with numbers, and

provide lots of opportunities for raising

awareness (seeing the math’s around us),

and for solving problems.

Try the activities below during the

holidays.

Big Numbers for the Middle/Senior

School (in this case Year5-8)

Turn to the property pages or Motor

Vehicle sales;

Letʼs read the numbers;

Whatʼs the most expensive house/car/

motorbike we can find?

Which is the cheapest?

More than/less than (Number) for the

Junior School (Year 1-4)

Turn to a sports page with scores and ask:

Can we spot any numbers bigger than

5/10/100?

Letʼs circle them with a pen;

Can you find any numbers less than

5/10/100?

Use a different colour, and circle those.
