T A G A I S T A T E C O L L E G EKubin Kids Connect with STEM Projects

by Judith WalkerHead of CampusKubin Ngurpay Lag

At Kubin Ngurpay Lag this year, there is a strong focus on STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. In addition to these four subjects the idea that Art and Design is an integral component of STEM is becoming recognised across the globe.

Rhode Island school of design and Victoria’s Warringa Park are just two educational facilities embracing the idea of STEAM – STEM plus Art.

All of these subject areas are used as ways for guiding student inquiry, dialogue and critical thinking. Wonderful news for our budding artists as they weave their creativity through the traditional STEM subject areas.

Kubin Ngurpay Lag and the local community’s combined strategic focus for the next four years demands that our students travel the path to become the innovators, educators, leaders and learners of the 21st century.

Embracing Tagai’s focus on STEM this year, Kubin Ngurpay Lag’s senior students will embark on an entrepreneurial journey in 2017 as they set up their own graphic design and printing business.

They will explore business finance and

management including marketing their product through a student designed website.

The small business project will provide exposure to Technology, Art and Mathematics as well as enhancing their literacy and numeracy skills.

These skills will be further enhanced within another project that provides for the students an outlet for their creative skills through film and media production.

Focussing on role play for the juniors and building skills across the campus in writing and producing short films will create for our students an understanding of how to position an audience.

Persuasive literacy permeates our lives and understanding how to create it helps students to become literate adults who are not easily fooled.

Other projects our budding scientists and engineers will explore include robotics and investigating the natural world around them.

Engaging in STEM subjects ensures that our students establish a strong foothold in their future by gaining skills and ways of working and thinking that will set them up for jobs that we can only imagine.

AttendanceThis week we celebrated two weeks of strong attendance here at Kubin Ngurpay Lag. Congratulations to the students, the teaching staff and mostly to our parents who support their child’s education so strongly.

Thank you all.

Josamo Nawia and Charlize Gibia-Pierce.

Tia Tamwoy, Yanetta Gaidan, Floyd Mosby and Ethan Bosun.
