Our instructors are trained artists who love teaching and sharing the joy of art-making with others. Summer Art Camp instructors have earned at least a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and some hold higher degrees. Many are state certified to teach K–12 Visual Arts and teach full-time in various settings during the school year. In addition to working as teaching artists, most spend time in the studio pursuing their own art making and have been featured at events and in exhibitions locally, nationally and internationally. Some are highly sought after for commissions for personal collections and public art installations. Our teaching artists are deeply involved in making a difference in the Memphis community, working with non-profit organizations or regularly volunteering their time and talents to local causes. We are proud to say that many of our teaching artists are also Memphis College of Art alumni!

Meet our Teaching Artists

Darcie Beeman-Black is a metalsmith who received her BA in Studio Art and Art Education from Humboldt State University in Arcata, California. She is currently pursuing a Master of Fine Arts in Metals from Memphis College of Art. Darcie primarily uses copper and silver to create jewelry and small metal sculptures. Her work has been exhibited nationally, and she is an active member of the Society of North American Goldsmiths.

Funlola Coker earned a BFA in Sculpture from Memphis College of Art. Nigerian by birth, she came to Memphis to continue studying fine art. She is a sculptor who works primarily in metal, clay and wood and her company, Funlola’s Workshop, was recently featured on the blog choose901.com. She finds travel to be an infinite source of inspiration to her as an artist. Funlola has been a part of our Saturday School and Summer Art Camp staff since 2008.

Anna Craig earned a Bachelor’s degree in Art and Child Development from University of Memphis. She works in drawing, painting and collage, and is a big believer in the importance of play and curiosity in art making. As a teacher, Anna encourages her students to have fun with making art and build confidence through trying new materials and techniques. Anna is excited to continue her love for teaching with MCA’s Summer Art Camp for the second year!

Katherine Dean received a BFA in Photography from the University of North Florida in 2014. She recently relocated to Memphis to pursue an MFA in Photography at Memphis College of Art. Katherine was formally trained in a traditional darkroom and is well-versed in both analog and digital processes with an emphasis

on alternative processes. Working primarily with the manipulation of analog mediums, Katherine has been exhibited and published nationally as well as given frequent artist lectures elaborating on her unique processes involving analog film.

Haley Franklin received a dual BFA degree in Costume Design and Fine Arts, with a minor in Social Sciences, from the California Institute of the Arts in 2012. She previously attended the Interlochen Arts Academy. Meet our Teaching Artists continued

Eric Quick received the President's Scholarship to attend MCA, where he graduated with a BFA in Sculpture. He has been teaching art with various programs for six years and has worked in Summer Art Camp and Saturday School since 2011. Eric believes, "because art-making allows us to articulate things we can't in words, it is a great way of enabling children to develop a strong, mature voice." He currently works as a freelance artist, most recently creating prosthetics and props for theater and film.

Amy Beth Rice received her BFA and Master of Arts in Teaching degrees from Memphis College of Art. She has taught art at Overton High School and Concord Academy. Her work has been featured in group and solo shows at GLITCH, Crosstown Arts, Caritas Village, the Hi-Tone, Bethel University, Midtown Crossing Grill, and the Hyde Gallery and has worked with UrbanArts, MemFix and Very Special Arts to create murals around the city of Memphis and in private homes. In addition to working as an artist and muralist, she is also the lead artist at a local paint-and-sip franchise.

Terri Scott is an illustrator, painter, storyteller, and avid reader. She was born in rural Louisiana, the inspiration for many of her paintings and stories. Growing up, she was influenced by J.K. Rowling and Lemony Snicket, whose stories wove fantastical worlds to which she could easily escape. Terri received her Bachelors of Fine Arts at Memphis College of Art with concentrations in Illustration and Painting. She teaches art to children, illustrates a local quarterly magazine, and aspires to write children’s books.

Amanda Weidman is a recent graduate of Memphis College of Art’s Animation program, who specialized in animation as expression throughout her career as a student. Drawing from skills as an illustrator, she focused on symbolism and line quality to translate meaning in her BFA piece. She is greatly inspired by the ability of movies and tv shows to connect people through shared experience, and hopes to someday play a part in the tv/film industry.

Kim Warnette received her MFA in Visual Information Arts from MCA in 1991 and began her teaching career with Shelby County Schools in 2007. She is the co-founder and former owner of Sidewalk University Book Gallery and Adrenaline Fine Arts Gallery. She is also an educational researcher for Foundations for Gifted Children, and a strong community arts advocate. Kim teaches visual art at Rozelle Creative and Performing Arts Elementary School.

J.T. Wilbanks is a graduate of Memphis College of Art and specializes in printmaking, papermaking and creative writing. His first body of work was a series of octopus paintings that were displayed in the private gallery of his mother's kitchen. The cornerstone of his teaching approach, whether dealing with kindergarteners or seniors, is that we are all artists; most people just don't know it yet. J.T. lives in Midtown, drinks a lot of coffee, and has a cat named Evelyn Crackers Wilbanks.

Katie Lepo studied Sculpture, Fiber Arts and Photography as an undergraduate at MCA, where she also began working as a teaching assistant in Saturday School and Summer Art Camp. She has been a teaching artist in MCA’s Summer Art Camp every year since graduating with a BFA in 2007. Katie holds a Tennessee professional teaching license in K-12 visual art and is working towards a Master of Arts in Teaching degree. Katie’s wealth of experience and whimsical artistic style make for a delightful studio experience for all her students.

Denisha “ShA” Locke is a native Memphian whose interest in fashion design began in her teens. After engaging in local fashion-enriched programs, she went on to earn a BFA in Fashion Design and Fashion Marketing. She has enjoyed a vibrant career in fashion design working for companies such as Polo Ralph Lauren, John Varvatos, and O'Oscar De La Renta. She is dedicated to teaching young people with creative minds and the desire to understand the art of design through sewing.

Memphis Design Lab provides real world design thinking training for high school students. Using an outcomes-focused design thinking methodology, their facilitators have engaged students in community projects ranging from systems for people experiencing homelessness to curriculum design.

Jorden Miernik received a BFA in Fine Arts in 2005 and an MAT in Art Education in 2016. Since 2006, she has been working with students of all ages and has been a teaching artist in MCA's Community Education programs since 2010. Jorden is an elementary school Art Teacher at Snowden School, a photographer and sketchbook doodle enthusiast. She is also the mother to two young artistic ladies with whom she enjoys spending all her free time.

When it is time to pick up your child, you may wait in the Main Gallery until a member of our staff brings the class up for sign out.

Do I need to purchase supplies? We provide all the supplies and equipment your child will need, unless otherwise noted in the class description.

Do I need to pack a lunch or snacks?Lunch is provided for full-day campers. A lunch menu will be sent out to parents the week prior to each camp session. Snacks are not provided, so it’s recommended that you pack a snack and drink for class breaks.

What should my camper wear? One thing is certain: we will get messy! Please be sure your child dresses appropriately and comfortably to take part in the mess-making. Closed toed shoes are highly recommended for all classes and are required for specialized activities (ceramics, metals, photo, printmaking and sewing).

Do I need to sign my camper in and out?At sign in, we are assuming responsibility for your child, and the sign in process is a written record of that transfer of care. At sign out we are responsible for releasing your child to an authorized person and we may take extra measures to ensure that we release campers to the appropriate person.

Can I go to class with my camper? We encourage independence in our campers and expect them to be able to attend class without their adult.
