• The Work at Huisman started as a job for two days to install a number of SQL Servers but the
mission was extended to identify all existing SQL-Servers and consolidate them into a SQL newly
established SQL-Server 2012 environment
• Development of SQL Server consolidation environment. This tool can prevent recurrent audits
to identify SQL database servers, instances, databases, and users that are available on the
network. The application can be easily accessed and maintained with a web interface.
• The SQL Server inventory system can be used to track the SQL Server environment but can also
be used ad-hoc. With one press of a button, all connected SQL Servers on the network can be read
and placed into the inventory database. With the inventory application shows always the current
state of the SQL-Server park.
• Design, described and build a new SQL Server environment based on SQL Server 2012 in a
VMware 5.1 Cluster
• The lack of an existing SQL Server architecture, the mission was becoming more extensive and I
ended doing everything that had to do with SQL Server, such as setting up replication and
mirroring.
• New backup job and procedures for all SQL-Servers and databases designed and implemented.

Cargill Nutrition is a international operating animal feed company with branches in 26 countries and
an annual turnover of 100 billion (US dollars?) a year.
By centralizing all its IT services and the implementation of SAP, the company managed to realize
considerable savings.
As Technical Application Manager I was responsible for a number of SAP related applications such
as Onguard, Everest, SIM/VIM, and the corporate web site. The applications were centralized and
set up by me on a new SQL-Server platform based on Windows 2008R2 and SQL-Server
2008R2. In order to limit costs in license fees, all applications were thoroughly inspected so as to
work with a version of OS and SQL-Server that was as efficient as possible.
All databases were furnished with mirror replication or with log shipping.
For the SQL-Servers I installed and described a Disaster Recovery environment. The replication
was set up on the basis of log shipping.
Initially I was responsible for maintaining contact with the suppliers. After a few months the focus
shifted to fine tuning the system and technical support.

Mirror replication SQL-Server 2008
Reeleezee is one of the market leaders in online internet bookkeeping in the Netherlands. To support the local team of Reeleezee I researched the best way to migrate 15.000 databases fromSQL-Server 2005 to SQL-Server 2008 and in the process, replace all existing servers with newhardware. As the application has to be online 24/7, the migration had to be done with as littledowntime as possible. To have all SQL-Server configured in the same way, the migration was done exclusively with the useof scripts. For the SQL-Server installation, security and file system I designed, developed and testedthe scripts. After reliability tests, these scripts where given to the hosting partner Bluedome, who then installedthe rest of the servers using these scripts. The result was that the migration was done within fourmonths, finishing 2 months before schedule.

A local authorization fault occurs the moment the client application places itsdata in the cache. NTLM treats the authorization request as a replay attack. This causes anauthorization failure. All requests to use objects are refused. This fault occurs in SQL-Server 2000, 2005 and IIS server 5.1 and 6

application with surveys from a MS-Reporting server. The package was programmed in India. This Construction caused a lot of miscommunication and required a lot of correction. A veryimportant aspect, namely making the program fully accessible to members of staff throughwindows authentication, had not been installed properly. The combination of SQL-Server 2000with the reporting server caused a lot of trouble with kerberos. To solve this problem, specialists from SSO, CAP Gemini and Microsoft had to be brought into the team.

The original version used Windows 2000, SQL-Server 2000 x86 and all components including themySQL server were installed on one computer. This configuration gave poor performance. My newversion uses Windows 2008 and SQL Server 2008 x64 for Web server and database server aswell as Windows 2003 x86 for the game server components. The database has now been normalized so that new game servers can be logged into the samedatabase. This configuration makes it possible to add an almost limitless number of new players tothe game. In the original version it was not possible to play with more than 2 to 300 playerssimultaneously. With the new configuration it is possible to play with 1000 players on one serversimultaneously. Players can even switch server without losing their connection or functionality. Thedatabase server can process up to 150.000 players logged in at any one time with around 1200connections per second.
The new configuration makes use of:

Ministerie Verkeer en Waterstaat (Ministry of Transport)VenW has been commissioned by the government to set up a new organization, called the SSO.(Shared Service Organisation) SSO’s task is to support a number of key Ministerial IT- activities.
Starting on 1 October 2008 the IT- department of the ministry of VWS was incorporated intothe SSO of the Ministry of VenW.In order to help ensure a smooth transition of SQL-Servers, I was asked to extend my contractfor 3 months in order to continue my work for the VWS within SSO.
This collaboration worked extremely well so they asked me to help them improve the quality oftheir services and stay for a whole extra year despite the fact that it is SSO’s explicit policy towork only with internal staff.
The work was comparable to what I did with VWS , but because of the increased size of theorganization it became an extremely interesting challenge. On 1 May 2009 the organization was extended with a further 65 staff members from the ITdepartment of the ministry Social Affairs (SZW)
I was given responsibility for the introduction and migration to SQL-Server 2008.A large part of my work was taken up with the management of the ever increasing SQL-Serverfarm.

CBS find himself in a situation that a new developed statistic program, build on SQL-Server2000 with views and stored procedures in the database and a C# client application, did notperformed as expected and did not reach out to the minimum specs of usability. The minimum specs for the application is 20 concurrent users with a maximum response of 35seconds for the most exotic query request. When going into multi-user tests, 4 concurrent users already break down the system withthousandths of locks on the database. The application requests all the companies and there workers in the Netherlands and a queryrequest easily returns several millions of records. My research showed the need of changing the software and the hardware, as the problems layin both areas. To speed up the searching process, some very large tables where hold in memory with DBCCPINTABLE. To avoid a shortage of cache memory, the SQL-Server computer where upgraded to16GB. Also the SQL-Server version where upgraded to the 64bit version to make optimum useof the memory. While the hardware site where covered, all queries and stored procedures be analyzed andwhen necessary, tuned with table hints to force the use of better or optimized indexes. As that was not enough, we also look critical to all transactions. Transactions that where timeconsuming where break down into smaller and faster transactions. This speed up theapplication and no longer there where deadlocks and unacceptable lock escalations. To finish the tuning, the tempDB where removed from the local disk and placed on the SANenvironment. As the application use the tempDB often, this was also a major performanceprofit. After these changes, the application now easily can handle 20 users. Also all requests made tothe system are handled within the expected time frame.

The result where two options: The use of the Sybase Replication Server. The use of Remote Procedure calls (RPC)
Using the replication server was the most advanced and effective option but theexpected duration to implement an almost unknown option to the ING environment madethe decision go to implementing a stored procedure programmed solution with use of RPC.The RPC option resulted in a mini transaction-locking program with server and soft locking.
The whole functionality is programmed with T-SQL in stored procedures.

There are also some databases for custom made web applications.

Intervet is a daughter company of Akzo Nobel and producer of innovative, high qualityveterinary products, Intervet is one of the worlds leading companies in the animal healthmarket.
My position with Intervet changed during the development process. Beginning with a throughand critical analysis of the existing web I had to advise management about the direction theproject should take. After that I was involved with research into the options, the definition offunctional and design specs. This process resulted in a complete overhaul of the design andstyling of the site.
As Intervet is present in more than 60 countries using 6 major languages to communicate, sitedevelopment had to be focused on a multi-national, multi-lingual platform.
One of the requirements was a uniform structure and layout for all countries while at the sametime maintaining full flexibility for every country to show their own menu structure andhomepage.
We used Photoshop and other graphical tools to create the backgrounds and buttons. As thebackground lay-out is defined by a rounded arc, we had to configure different sets of imagesfor each screen resolution. The structure recognises the properties of the screen andautomatically loads the required images. The functionality of the application prevents the needof redundant html pages. The last phase was the development of the site. All business rulesstored procedures were written in SQL-Server 2000. The application was written in TSQL, ASP

and client site JavaScript. The result was a flexible system with DHTM menus for every country. To support all languages and countries, I designed a Content Management System for easyand flexible data input. In order to go online, the Disney Paris Internet site required a maximum of special securityfeatures to prevent Euro Disney to have to deal with any nasty surprises. The demand by EuroDisney that the Internet site should be driven by a Windows NT. 4.0 computer was reason forATT to hire an expert for that environment. Responsibilities included the maintenance of thesite with specific reference to security. Making any form of hacking "impossible" was a highpriority. All facets of security had to be discussed with the programmers of the site. The ASP(Active Server Pages) demanded a lot of attention. Potential loopholes and sensitive areas hadto be repaired often by the installation of service packs and patches. In order to guaranteesecurity and continuity, and to make sure the site was accessible at all times during theintroduction period of three months, a 24-hour security service was set up by colleague andmyself. During this period the site was continually on-line except for a short period of less thanten minutes. An important aspect of the security system involved the regular analysis of logfiles. This showed that, especially during the early phase of the introduction, the site wasregularly under attack from hackers. Not one attempt to crack the site succeeded. It quicklybecame clear however, that an effective password policy and a comprehensive and up-to-dateoverview of all people with access to the source code of the site was indispensable foreffective security management.
