Today’s Matchup“4 Downs” with the Hawks

1 - Saturday’s contest will be Liberty’s 2016 Big South home opener, and Monmouth will seek its first-ever victory at Williams Stadium in its third try. The Hawks have had only one head coach in their 24 years of playing football, Kevin Callahan (135-111 career record).

2 - Monmouth junior DB Mike Basile ranks second in the Big South with 69 tackles and is tied for the FCS national lead with three of his team’s eight blocked kicks in 2016. The STATS Defensive Play-er of the Year watch list member has totaled 20 tackles in his first two career meetings with Lib-erty. Meanwhile, Liberty senior WR Dante’ Shells has played well in two prior matchups against Monmouth, with nine catches for 154 yards.

3 - Monmouth is in its third season of playing Big South football. The Hawks are 4-9 all-time in Big South play, including 0-2 this season. Monmouth is playing just three home games this season, due to upcoming construction at Monmouth Sta-dium. The Hawks have fared well on the road in 2016, going 3-2 away from New Jersey.

4 - Monmouth’s stingy defense ranks No. 4 na-tionally in fewest passing yards allowed (152.9 ypg). The Hawks are 4-0 when scoring 20 points or more and 0-3 when tallying 19 points or few-er. Similarly, Liberty is 3-0 when it reaches the 20-point mark this season but 0-3 when it scores 19 points or fewer.

    • Liberty nearly recovered from an 11-point fourth quarter deficit to win, scoring two TDs in the final 4:24 of regulation.

    • The Flames outgained the Hawks, 402-297, but committed all three of the game’s turnovers.

    • Josh Woodrum completed 34 of his career-high 53 pass attempts for 336 yards for the Flames.

    First to 50

    • Liberty’s 36-21 victory at Kennesaw State last Saturday improved the Flames’ all-time Big South Conference record to 50-19.

    • The Flames are the first team to record 50 con-ference wins in the 15 seasons (2002-16) of Big South football.

    Flames on Homecoming

    • Liberty is 29-13 all-time on Homecoming.• Liberty’s last four Homecoming games have each

been decided by 10 points or less.• The Flames are 7-2 and are averaging 48.1 ppg

during their last nine Homecoming contests.• Liberty is 8-3 in Big South games played on

Homecoming at Williams Stadium.• Liberty’s last six Homecoming games have each

drawn over 18,000 fans to Williams Stadium.• The Flames have never hosted Monmouth for

    Homecoming.

Home-field Advantage• The home team has won all three previous Liber-

ty-Monmouth games, including two Flames vic-tories at Williams Stadium (2013 and 2014) and a Hawk triumph at Monmouth Stadium (2015).

Milestone Watch1 - After recovering his fifth career fumble during

the season opener at Virginia Tech, Erwin Des-sources’ next fumble recovery will move him into a tie for second place on Liberty’s all-time list.

2/3 - Alex Probert is the first Liberty freshman kicker ever to make two 50-yard field goals in a season and the only FCS freshman kicker with a pair of 50-yarders already in 2016. If he con-nects from 50+ yards against Monmouth, Prob-ert would tie John Lunsford’s program record of three straight games with a 50-yard field goal. Lunsford hit from 50+ yards in each of the last two games in 2014, as well as the 2015 season opener.

4/8 - Tyrin Holloway is four tackles shy of 100 for his career, while fellow defensive back Alpha Jal-loh needs eight stops to reach the century mark. They are looking to join fellow Flames Nick New-man, Dexter Robbins, Wesley Scott and JaRon Greene as members of the 100-tackle club.

136 - With 136 passing yards, Stephen Calvert would become just the third Liberty QB ever to total 1,000 passing yards as a freshman (also Paul Johnson/1986 and Josh Woodrum/2012).

A Liberty Win Would ...• Give the Flames a 3-1 all-time record against

Monmouth, including a 3-0 mark at Williams Sta-dium.

    • Mark the Flames’ first three-game winning streak since the team posted four straight victories be-tween Oct. 11-Nov. 8, 2014.

    • Improve the Flames’ all-time record on Home-coming to 30-13.

    • Give the Flames their fourth straight Big South home win.

    • Boost the team’s record in home games under Turner Gill to 22-6.

    • Give the Flames an all-time record of 107-47 at Williams Stadium in the team’s 28 years of com-petition at the facility.

    • Put the Flames’ record above .500 (4-3) for the first time in 2016.

Quick Hitters• The Flames have captured seven Big South titles

in the last nine years, entering 2016. They are 50-19 all-time in Big South games, including 41-9 since the start of the 2007 season.

    • The Flames are 51-11 in home games at Williams Stadium since the start of the 2006 season, in-cluding 2-1 this season.

    • Liberty is 6-4 in its last 10 meetings with FCS Top 25 teams. The stretch was highlighted by a 15-14 win at No. 2/1 Coastal Carolina on Nov. 22, 2014, the Flames’ first-ever victory over a No. 1 team in program history.

    • Liberty has recorded 10 straight winning seasons, dating back to 2006. That makes the Flames one of five active FCS programs with a current streak of 10 or more in a row, along with Harvard (15 seasons), Jacksonville State (13), New Hampshire (12) and McNeese State (11).

    • The Flames’ 41-33 win at Georgia State on Oct. 3, 2015 was the team’s fourth all-time victory over an FBS opponent and second in as many years. The Flames’ previous FBS wins came against Eastern Michigan (1989), Ball State (2010) and Appalachian State (2014).
