.
The following are some of the topics Brunswick School students in all classrooms — across every grade and age group — will be exploring with their teachers: • Read Across America: (March 3) Libraries, schools and community centers hold special Read Across America events that foster reading in their communities. Special events on this day may be planned by the teachers to encourage their students to read. • Women’s History Month: (March 6) Why do we celebrate? Who are some historical women figures in history that we can discuss/look up to? Who are some modern women figures in history that we can discuss/look up to? Notable inventions/laws/careers etc.
• Purim: (March 9) What is Purim and where is it celebrated? Who does Purim remember? Why is Es-ther remembered for being a hero? What type of clothing is worn? What special foods are eaten? • Holi: (March 10) The Indian "festival of spring," the "festival of colors," or the "festival of love." The festival signifies the arrival of spring and the end of winter. It is a festive day to get together, play, laugh, and forgive. What colors will we see? How is color traditionally used during the festival? • St. Patrick’s Day: (March 17) Who celebrates the holiday? Where did it begin? What are some of the well-known symbols and related myths or folklore connected to the holiday? • “In like a LION out like a LAMB” What does this mean? What is the weather like in the beginning of March? How is that like a lion? What is the weather like at the end of March? How is that like a lamb?
• First Day of Spring: (March 20th) What is the season like? What changes will we see in the weather? What will begin to happen to the trees, the flowers, the birds, the insects? Letters Related to March Theme
• C for colors
• F for festival
• H for Holi
• I for Ireland
• L for lion and lamb

THE BRUNSWICK SCHOOL
WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TBS CLASSROOMS
The themes for March will be evident in classrooms throughout the Brunswick School, and the way in which specific teachers bring the topics to life will vary based on the needs and interests of the children in their class.

THE BRUNSWICK SCHOOL
INFANTS
Young Infants (4 to 12 months) at TBS are the
luckiest bunch in town! The month of March
will be filled with exciting activities for our
littlest ones. In the beginning of the month we
plan on celebrating Dr. Seuss’s birthday by
using our feet to make lots of fun artwork. We
are going to be celebrating St. Patrick’s Day by
wearing green and doing some fun sensory
activities. Our infant teachers love to watch the
curiosity and excitement on our Young Infants’
faces when they are exploring new textures and
participating in hands-on activities. Teachers
will continue singing songs and reading stories
to the little ones in order to capture their
attention and develop their vocabulary.
Older Infants (13 to 18 months) will celebrate
Dr. Seuss, Holi, and St. Patrick’s Day. Teachers
will be engaging the Older Infants in high
sensory activities such as exploring green
whipped cream and paint, creating rainbows as a
group, and searching the classroom for “Gold
Coins.” The children will dress in green for St.
Patrick’s Day.
Older Infants may celebrate Holi with fun art
activities, so they may go home with some
colorful clothes! Their teachers will also
continue to promote their vocabulary
development this month by reading lots of Dr.
Seuss stories!

TODDLERS
Young Toddlers (19 months to 2.5 years) in
March will look forward to spending more time
outside as Spring approaches and the weather
becomes warmer. They will look for signs of
Spring such as blooming flowers and leaves on
trees. They may even make science connections
by planting things or beginning to learn about
the life cycle of a butterfly.
To celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, the Young
Toddlers may explore the colors of the rainbow
and do projects focusing on the color green. This
is a great opportunity to expose the children to
color mixing (a great lesson in cause and effect
too!) Additionally, Holi takes place in the month
of March and it is a great opportunity for the
children to continue working on recognizing and
identifying different colors.
As our Young Toddlers grow more independent,
the teachers will begin to introduce using the
potty to those who are showing signs of readiness.
This timing is important, since some of the
children will be transitioning to an Older
Toddler classroom in the Spring. Potty training is
an exciting milestone for children and they often
feel such pride when they make the transition!
Older Toddlers (2.5 years to 3 years) Winter is
fading away and Spring is coming! The Older
Toddler classrooms continue to take advantage of
many learning opportunities during the circle-time
activities, hands-on projects, guided learning, and
music or songs. This provides a balanced approach
to multi-sensory learning and engages tiny learners
no matter what their learning style may be.
Children will enhance their fine motor by
squishing, rolling, and pounding green molding
clay. They will also enhance their counting and
math skills by counting green shamrock cutouts for
instance, or counting pieces of “gold” and tossing
them into a leprechaun’s pot.
By playing “Leprechaun Tag” (which involves
pinning a “pot o’ gold” cutout to the clothing of a
child who is “it” and a leprechaun cutout to the
rest of the children who are trying to catch the pot
of gold, a new rendition of Duck, Duck, Goose)
Older Toddlers will strengthen their gross motor
skills and coordination.

THE BRUNSWICK SCHOOL
PRE-SCHOOL AND PRE-K
Pre-School students (3 years old by Oct. 1) and
Pre-K students (4 years old by Oct. 1) will
continue their academic journey by expanding
their vocabulary to include words like
“leprechaun” and “trailblazer” as we explore
the various traditions associated with St. Patty’s
Day and the many contributions made by both
historical and modern women during
Women’s History Month. The children will
hear mythical stories like the folklore
surrounding the “leprechaun and his pot of
gold at the end of a rainbow.” During Read
Across America celebrations, students will
listen to or read a variety of stories from
different authors using different methods of
writing such as rhyming, fictional poetry, and
non-fiction stories. Our Pre-School and Pre-K
students will also explore the change in season
by going on nature walks or making predictions
about when the blossoms on the trees will
grow. Students may be asked to make journal
entries and draw pictures about the Spring
Season and what they are looking forward to
when the seasons change.
Exploring visuals and
vocabulary through books is
an ongoing way in which we engage our students.
Some of the books they may be seeing, hearing,
and reading this March are:
1. “Pete the Cat, The Great Leprechaun Chase”
by James Dean
2. “Hello Spring” By Shelley Rotner
3. “Spring is Here” By Will Hillenbrand
4. “I am Jane Goodall” (People Who Changed the
World Series) by Brad Seltzer
5. “I am Helen Keller” (People Who Changed the
World Series) by Brad Seltzer
6. “Holi” (Celebrating Holidays Series) by Rachel
Grack

THE BRUNSWICK SCHOOL KINDERGARTEN AND 1ST GRADE
Kindergarten students (5 years old by Oct. 1)
& 1st grade students (6 years old by Oct. 1) in
the month of March will continue working on
addition and subtraction with the added challenge
of using double and triple digits. They will also
begin learning the concept of regrouping.
Additionally, the Kindergarteners will start to
explore cardinal directions and study maps to
identify the oceans and their locations. And the
First Graders will learn about measurements and
basic fractions.
In the spirit of Spring, during science, both First
Grade and Kindergarten students will research the
life cycles of frogs and butterflies and they may
even have live tadpoles to observe in the
classroom!
In literacy, the Kindergarten class will continue
their work on phonetics by learning to decode
consonant blends. Throughout March, they will
study digraphs (words that contain blends such as
–ch, -th, or –sh) and diphthongs (words that
contain blends such as aw, ew, oi or oo). The First
Graders will be celebrating Read Across America
Day at the beginning of the month by pretending
to camp in the classroom and read in tents. And as
the weather becomes warmer, both classrooms will
spend more time outdoors at the park and they will
take community walks to the local library!
To celebrate the holidays, students may build
leprechaun traps to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day and
invite their parents to participate in the activity or
engage is colorful art activities to celebrate Holi, the
“festival of colors.”
