AUGUST MEETING

Our host for August has had to withdraw from being able to host the next meeting. Is your organisation able to host our next meeting Thursday August 6th from 10 am until 12 noon. Refreshments (morning tea or light lunch would be great) but are not essential. You will need a room for up to 20 attendees. Contact Elvira if you are able to assist. Many members would not be familiar with the new Northern Hub so if your agency has a link to this new facility perhaps you would consider hosting our next meeting.

COMMUNITY SECTOR BRIEFING + STATE BUDGET SUBMISSION CONSULTATION –

GEELONG

Please find information below regarding upcoming VCOSS policy consultations. We are travelling to areas in regional

Victoria to ensure that the voices of regional and rural community service organisations are captured in our submission

for the next state budget, the shaping the education state review, the Bracks review, the portable long service leave

review and the review into abuse and neglect in disability services.

We hope you will be able to come along and share your concerns and priorities.

July 21 @ 11:00 am - 3:00 pm First Session is open to non members Every year, VCOSS produces an extensive submission to inform the development of the Victorian Government’s State Budget. The Submission documents a wide array of expenditure and policy directions for the Victorian Government, and form an important foundation of our advocacy work throughout the year. VCOSS welcomes members input and advice on the strategic priorities for our State Budget Submission for the 2016-17 financial year. In 2015, VCOSS is bringing budget consultation to regional Victoria. The regional forums will also include an update on community sector issues. The first half of each regional forum is open to anyone interested in the community sector environment, and will provide participants with a briefing about and opportunity to discuss current issues including:

The state and federal budget

Community organisations in a climate of change: key sector challenges, opportunities and trends

Fairer funding and service agreement for the community sector

This session will run from 11am – 12.30pm and be followed by lunch. This session is open to all community sector organisations. The second half of the forum is a VCOSS member only session, to provide input to the VCOSS State Budget Submission 2016-17 and other policy consultation processes, including:

Shaping the Education State and the Bracks education funding review The Victorian Government is conducting a number of reviews of its education policies and direction. Two significant investigations are Help shape the Education State and the Bracks Review of Education Funding. Help shape the Education State is a wide-ranging consultation process that will examine the future aspiration and direction of Victoria’s education system. The Brack’s Review will more closely examine the calculation, allocation, distribution and transparency of school funding in Victoria. VCOSS is planning to make submissions to both these inquiries, and would welcome member’s contributions and expertise on the issues.

Portable long service leave The Victorian Parliament’s Economic, Education, Jobs and Skills Committee is conducting an inquiry into employer schemes for portable long service leave, with a particular focus on the community sector. VCOSS is planning to make a submission to this inquiry, and would welcome member’s advice and input into our submission.

Abuse and neglect in disability services There are currently several inquiries into abuse and neglect in disability services, including by the Victorian Ombudsman, the Victorian Parliament’s Family and Community Development Committee, and the Senate Community Affairs Committee. VCOSS is intending to make a submission to the Victorian inquiry, and seeks information and advice from member organisations about the cause and extent of abuse and neglect, and potential actions to prevent future abuses.

This session will run from 12.30pm – 3pm and is for VCOSS members only. Previous VCOSS State Budget Submissions are available to download on our website, as are other VCOSS submissions and reports.

YOUTH VOICES 2015

IT IS TIME TO TURN THE TABLES – Youth Voices 2015

BATForce is proud to partner with GPAC Ed. and Headspace for this year’s Youth Voices event. Youth Voices gives

young people the opportunity to ‘turn the tables’ on how the media, general public, teachers and adults often

view and judge the choices they make and the things they do. It is about young people being the experts and

educating the adults, parents and educators on topics such as: social media, safe partying, family violence, sexual

identity, bullying, healthy relationships and more.

This year will see the addition of an evening performance open to parents, carers and the public. For additional information or to register a group of young people please see the forms below.

SECTOR NEWS

SPREADING THE MESSAGE

Dear Community Members

Please find attached an invitation to the “Spreading the Message Resource Kit” launch.

The launch will be held in NAIDOC week, on Wednesday 8th July at 11.00 am.

Spreading the Message has been a successful and innovative project designed to strengthen

relationships between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal community members.

Due to the success of the Project, a “How To Guide” has been developed to support other organisations

/ services who may be interested to undertake a similar Project and spread the message in their own

communities.

The “Spreading the Message Kit” will be offered to those attending the launch, at no cost.

The Kit includes:

A DVD, showcasing the Northern Bay College Project

Spreading the Message Booklet, produced by Kids Own Publishing

A “How to Guide”, outlining Project Process Steps and Session Plans

Spreading the Message is a Project which can be adapted to suit a range of services, in a range of

settings.

The only thing needed is genuine commitment to strengthen relationships between Aboriginal and non-

Aboriginal community members.

Please come and help us celebrate with Project Leaders, Corrina O’Toole and Nathan Patterson, to

launch the Kit.

Yours sincerely,

Elaine Carbines

Chief Executive Officer

FOR SCHOOLS

YOU THE MAN

Since 2013, Deakin’s School of Health and Social Development has run the program “You the Man” – a play that

addresses the issue of violence against women, and the role of friends and bystanders in its prevention. The

program has been shown to great success in schools, universities, sporting clubs and workplaces across the state

of Victoria.

”You the Man” program can form an important component of a local strategy for violence prevention by

focussing on bystander engagement and violence prevention. The program consists of a 30-35 minute play about

dating violence and sexual assault plus a moderated post-performance panel discussion.

This performance is unique in that it has no set performance dates – the audience sets them! You choose from a

range of available dates, and book one in. The performance will also come to you, in your local setting. And while

the script of the play remains the same, the post-performance discussion is also tailored to suit each individual

community – the local setting, circumstances and other violence prevention activities and support services are all

incorporated.

An outline of the program is attached. For more details, and information about available dates, go to our website

http://www.deakin.edu.au/health-social-development/chase/you-the-man.
