Early exposure to hands-on learning and STEM education is one of the best
ways to engage students and ultimately set them on a long-term path for
success in college and a career of their choice. STEM Camps will focus on
students enrolled in the Gifted and Talented Program in the 5th, 6th, and 7th
grades. The engineering design process will be a major emphasis during the
camps to show students how the process can be applied to everyday life as well
as in computational and critical thinking and problem solving. STEM
education creates critical thinkers, increases science literacy, and enables the
next generation of innovators.

Summer 2019 5th, 6th & 7th Grade Gifted & Talented STEM Summer Camps
We are igniting a passion and curiosity for STEM subjects and fields as we continue a tradition of
innovation at La Joya ISD!
Students will complete hands-on STEM learning activities applying the engineering design
process while exploring STEM themes and creating original designs.
STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) are the foundations of the
industrial & corporate world. Early exposure to hands-on learning and STEM education is one of
the best ways to engage students and ultimately set them on a long-term path for success in
college and a career of their choice.
What separates STEM from the traditional science and math education is the blended learning
environment and showing students how the scientific method can be applied to everyday life. The
STEM program will teach students computational thinking and focuses on the real world
applications of problem solving. STEM education creates critical thinkers, increases science
literacy, and enables the next generation of innovators.
The Engineering Design Process will be a major emphasis in all activities during the camps.
The Engineering Design Process is a series of steps that engineers follow to come up with a
solution to a problem. Many times the solution involves designing a product (like a machine or
computer code) that meets certain criteria and/or accomplishes a certain task.
STEM Themes Offered / Activities:
● Engineering and Design
● Computer Science
● Robotics Programming
● Technology and Communications
A variety of activities will be designed under each STEM theme that will allow each student to
experience the meaning of each theme while learning specific skills and knowledge through the
activity

MISSION AND PURPOSE
77
Project Smart Making Mathematics Meaningful is a Migrant Education Program Consortium Incentive
project designed in response to substantial needs identified in migrant students in the lead state of Texas
and the consortium receiving states of Arkansas, Illinois, Michigan, Montana, New York, Virginia, and
Wisconsin. Project Smart Making Mathematics Meaningful features interstate and intrastate coordination
to provide the most highly mobile students with research and evidence-based curriculum, instruction, and
support services that address their special needs. Project Smart Making Mathematics Meaningful goal is to
operate a high quality consortium that improves the intrastate and interstate coordination of migrant
education programs by addressing key needs of migratory children who have had their education
interrupted. Key activities of the project include:
● An innovative, needs-based math program designed specifically for highly mobile, migrant
students in grades K-12 that adapts Project Smart Making Mathematics Meaningful and PASS
curricula;
● A design that promotes the preparation of migrant students for higher level math encompassing 5
dimensions of mathematical proficiency;
● A high quality, professional development component that is based on Texas’ Teacher
Competencies (knowledge and skills) that are needed to successfully carry out the project goals,
objectives, and activities;
● A Project Smart Making Mathematics Meaningful Steering Team (MST) composed of a project
director and a representative from each consortium state, an external evaluator, and other
stakeholders; as well as a Content Advisory Team consisting of migrant math specialists, math
state directors, and university/agency staff with expertise in math to build bridges across content
areas and federal programs;
● The involvement of parents as partners with the school to facilitate their child’s learning;
● The innovative use of technology for the delivery of instruction to students and professional
development to instructional staff; and
● The collaboration of states and agencies to align services, curriculum, instruction, educational
materials, assessment, systems for data collection and reporting, professional development, and the
transfer of records to benefit students who are the most highly mobile. INTRODUCTION
This guide is developed for administrators, teachers, and Project Smart Making Mathematics Meaningful
Partners, working with migrant students in Texas and in participating consortium states. Your
contributions, diligence, patience, and expertise are critical elements, which make Project Smart Making
Mathematics Meaningful a successful learning opportunity for students. By working enthusiastically and
supportively, educators throughout the nation provide students with opportunities to learn. These students
who move from state to state become the shared responsibility of each state.
Project Smart Making Mathematics Meaningful participating staff and students are truly educational
pioneers exploring paths for more effective instructional opportunities. Through past experiences in
distance learning, we know that students can learn utilizing instructional television. In Project Smart Math
MATTERS, we blend different settings, school and home, to provide unique opportunities for students by
addressing the two performance goals of mathematics and reading.

Re: Special Education Extended School Year Program
The extended school year program for special education students will focus on the students’
individual educational plans which are based on the student’s ARD/IEP recommendations.
Students who should be considered are those that have shown regression after a break (such as
summer or Christmas) and have been indicated on their IEP report cards as not making adequate
progress. Extended school year needs to be documented in the IEP and the ARD committee
should make recommendations as to the number of hours per day that the student needs to attend
the program.
Thank you for your cooperation and support.
