Traveling with Diabetes (U.S. Government Regulations) The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Transportation Security Administration (TSA) have increased security measures at all U.S. airports. Some of the precautions taken by these agencies, as well as by individual airlines, affect passengers with type 1 diabetes (T1D), who must carry their medical supplies and equipment when they travel. The following information represents current requirements for passengers. We recommend that you call your specific airline at least one day in advance of your scheduled flight and also consult the TSA guidelines for travelers with medical conditions at: www.tsa.gov When you reach a security checkpoint, notify the security officers that you have diabetes and are carrying your supplies with you and/or wearing an insulin pump. The TSA allows the following diabetes-related supplies and equipment through the checkpoint once they have been screened:

Insulin and insulin-loaded dispensing products (vials or box of individual vials, jet injectors, biojectors, epipens, infusers, and preloaded syringes.

Unlimited number of unused syringes when accompanied by insulin or other injectable medication.

Lancets, blood-glucose meters, blood-glucose meter test strips, alcohol swabs, meter-testing solutions.

Insulin pump and insulin pump supplies (cleaning agents, batteries, plastic tubing, infusion kit, catheter, and needle).

Insulin pumps and supplies must be accompanied by insulin.

Glucagon emergency kit. We advise travelers with T1D to keep their glucagon kits intact in the original preprinted, pharmaceutically labeled containers.

Urine ketone test strips.

Unlimited number of used syringes when transported in Sharps disposal container or other similar hard-surface container.

Sharps disposal containers or similar hard-surface disposal container for storing used syringes and test strips.

Due to forgery concerns, prescriptions and letters of medical necessity will not be accepted. Passengers should consult their individual air carriers for both domestic (U.S.) and international travel regulations. Be advised that FAA and individual airline policies are subject to change. In the event that travelers with T1D encounter problems boarding their flights, they should contact the FAA Grounds Security Commissioner at the airport for assistance. Packing diabetes supplies in checked baggage is NOT recommended, as cargo hold temperatures vary greatly and the passenger may need the supplies in flight. Disclaimer: This information is not endorsed by JDRF or any other organization. It is provided only as a general resource and should be used only as a guide. Always consult your physician.

Important Bike Shipping & Pickup Information

As you prepare yourself for your upcoming Ride, you’ll want to make sure you prepare your bike as well. Regardless of your chosen fundraising package, here are a few important reminders to help make sure your bike arrives in good working order and ready for Ride Day:

PREPARING YOUR BIKE

Regardless of your package, here are the steps to remember when preparing bike for the Nashville Ride to Cure Diabetes.

Get your bike tuned up prior to your arrival at the event. o If you are shipping your bike, make sure you allow enough time for your bike shop to perform the

necessary maintenance before it needs to ship.

Decide how you will transport your bike to Nashville: bring it with you in the car, ship it through a transportation carrier, fly with it, or you can rent one. There will be a fully assembled option for select cities. Regardless of your preferred method, be sure your Chapter knows how your bike will be arriving.

Read through all bike shipping instructions provided to you by your local Chapter. If you have not yet received these instructions, please contact your Chapter or email [email protected].

SHIPPING YOUR BIKE

All bikes should ship by Tuesday, October 20th, to arrive by Tuesday, October 27th to ensure your bike arrives in plenty of time.

Be sure your bike is properly labeled. One copy of your rider number and one copy of your shipping label should be adhered to the outside of the box and one copy of each should be inside the box, for proper identification. You will receive your rider number from your Chapter the week of October 12th. If you are a Coach or have selected the Gold package, you will receive your shipping labels at this time as well.

If your bike shop will be packing your bike, be sure to notify them well in advance. During the height of Ride season, many shops will need extra time to perform any maintenance prior to disassembling and packing your bike correctly.

To ensure your bike arrives in good working order, it is of utmost importance to follow the guidelines in the following documents when packing your bike. While there is a certain amount of risk assumed when packing up your bike and shipping it across the country, there are a number of ways to avoid unnecessary damage. If somebody else is packing your bike for you, please be sure they read through these and follow the instructions.

o Bike Shipping Standards: these guidelines have been set based on UPS shipping standards. In the event damage does occur to your bike and you choose to file a claim with the shipping provider, your claim will likely be denied if these guidelines are not followed (see below for what to do in the unlikely event that damage does occur).

o How to Box a Bike: this provides step by step instructions on the proper way to box a bike, based on the UPS shipping standards. If you are not familiar with how to properly box a bike, you may want to seek out a professional.

If you are flying with your bike, be sure to follow the same packing guidelines listed above.

Important Bike Shipping & Pickup Information

PICKING UP YOUR BIKE ON-SITE / BIKE RETURN

The 2015 Nashville Bike Room will be located Franklin Marriott. For your convenience, we recommend checking into your hotel room and registering at the JDRF Registration prior to picking up your bike.

Once your bike arrives on-site, the Bike Room Crew will unpack, inspect for damage, assemble and provide the bike number, which is required on the course.

Your bike will be available for you to pick up on Thursday, provided it arrives by the date listed above. Note: If you plan to arrive early, the bike room crew will make every effort to accommodate an early pick-up, but it is not guaranteed.

After arriving to the bike room, inspect your bike with one of the Bike Room Mechanics to be sure it is adjusted correctly, no significant damage has occurred, and that it is in proper working order.

If you are driving your bike to the venue or if it is coming with you on the plane, please visit the bike room upon your arrival, and prior to Ride Day to obtain your bike number (the Crew can put this on for you).

Once your bike has received its number, please store it in your hotel room for the duration of the weekend.

After the event, if your bike needs to be packed / shipped home or if it is returning on the Raceday Truck, please check it back in with the Bike Room. If you are driving with your bike and do not need packing / shipping services, please keep your bike with you.

WHAT IF DAMAGE OCCURS?

When shipping your bike, there is a certain amount of impact that your bike will receive from other objects and leaning up against other boxes. As is so when riding your bike on the road, it is subject to nicks, scuffs and scratches when shipping it across the country and are not typically covered under insurance. When packed correctly, significant damage is unlikely to occur. Should significant damage occur, here are a few important things to remember:

o If damage occurred in route to Nashville, be sure to speak with one of the Bike Room Mechanics or JDRF Staff prior to your bike leaving the Bike Room.

o If damage occurs during transit and a claim needs to be filed, it is important to follow the claims process and guidelines as set forth by the transportation carrier or airline.

o Was your bike padded correctly? Was your bike packed correctly? Prior to filing a claim, be sure your bike was properly packed. Otherwise any claim will likely be denied.

If your bike was shipped through Raceday Transport / UPS, here is the claims process to follow. Insurance Note: insurance does not apply for scratches, nicks, scrapes, tire rub, misalignment, etc. Insurance should be for catastrophic damage only – one where the bike or rims or frame has been compromised due to an obvious “visual” display of damage by the shipping party (UPS). UPS will not approve any claim for a damaged a component where it is lacking obvious signs of box damage or internal damage. In addition, the bike must have been properly packed for intended transit for a claim to be considered.

If you have any questions about shipping your bike please reach out to your Chapter Representative. If at any time you have a question on-site or would like help navigating the process, the National Staff, along with the Bike Room Crew, will be available to help throughout the weekend. We look forward to you and your bike’s safe arrival!

TUNE UPS: All bikes should be tuned up at

a local bike shop before being transported

to Nashville. Mechanics will be on hand to

assemble bikes and pack the bikes, as well

as for minor tweaks and emergencies.

They will not be able to perform complete

tune-ups. Bikes should be in great working

order (brakes, shifters etc.) and should be

cleaned/lubricated.

AID STATIONS: Distances will be noted on

the map and cue sheet which you will be

given at the mandatory meeting on

Saturday morning. They average 12-15

miles apart. Riders should plan on about 1

to 1.5 hours between check points. There

will be plenty of food and drink at each of

the check points.

TURNAROUND TIMES: To ensure that all

riders complete the course by the 5:00

PM closing, riders will be required to

reach a pre-determined checkpoint by a

required time. Turnaround times will be

addressed at Friday’s mandatory meeting

and are subject to change based on

weather, course conditions, etc. The

volunteers at the checkpoint will notify

you of any changes.

RIDERS AGES 13-17: Please remember

that all riders under the age of 18 must

have a parent or guardian with them at all

times on the course, no exceptions.

supplies with you on the plane – do not

place them in your checked baggage.

NUTRITION: There will be plenty of food and drink available throughout Ride Day (sandwiches, fruit, power bars, etc.) as well as a variety of gluten free products. We recommend that if you are used to eating certain energy bars, gels, drinks, etc. while you ride, please bring those with you in case we don’t have the same kind.

OPTIONAL TUNE-UP RIDE: Riders are

encouraged to participate in the tune-up

ride on Friday morning to check out your

bike and make sure everything is working

smoothly before the big day. We will go

over the details of the short route at the

mandatory meeting on Friday morning.

T1D RIDERS: Please be sure to bring extra

supplies including your glucometer. Please

carry your glucometer, insulin and glucose

with you on the route. We do not

automatically notify the course crew as to

who has diabetes, but we can notify SAG

vehicles and checkpoint volunteers upon

your request. A “Managing T1D on Your

Ride” seminar will be held at 4:30 PM

on Friday afternoon presented by some of

our JDRF Coaches.

IMPORTANT MEDICAL INFORMATION FOR ALL RIDERS: Brock Ryan, EMT will

Welcome to the 2015 Ride season and to the Ride in Music City, Nashville, Tennessee. Each ride venue has its own

unique concerns and challenges when it comes to your safety. In preparation for your ride in Nashville, we would like

to give you a couple of reminders on hydration and some safety tips to practice.

Temperatures have varied greatly on this Ride so we ask that you monitor weather conditions prior to you zipping up

your bags. Conditions may be a little cooler in the month of October in the South, but we would still like you to be

mindful of your hydration plan. We recommend that you start your hydration plan 48 hours prior to the event. Drink

plenty of water and also drinks that contain electrolytes such as sodium and potassium. It is essential that you

maintain a balance of water and electrolytes just before and during your ride. On Ride day as you continue to

hydrate also remember to fuel your body with food and snacks that contain carbs and electrolytes. JDRF with have

breakpoints set up every 12 to 15 miles stocked with such items for your enjoyment and to replenish your body.

Please follow any instruction given by Coaches, JDRF Staff, officials and law enforcement when it comes to safe riding

practices. T1D riders will have a discussion on specific plans for your Ride day at our “Managing T1D on Your Ride”

seminar on Friday. If you have any questions, feel free to email us in advance. I will be the Medical Coordinator for

this year’s Nashville Ride, assisted by Brian Stute. Please see me upon your arrival with any questions you may have.

Safe travels and we can’t wait to see you all cross the finish line safe, sound and smiling.

Thank you,

Brock Ryan

MIKE CLARK National Head Coach

I was recruited to be a coach by a good friend/customer. Prior to that I couldn't have told you what "JDRF" spelled or how to pronounce it! My connection to JDRF now is boundless…so many good friends and great people that I've been lucky enough to meet, ride and work with.

JOHN DALLMAN National Head Coach

It's like widgets, on my own I can only produce so many but with a group, the potential impact grows exponentially.

DAVID ERTL National Head Coach

It’s a blast to be able to help people reach their personal goals while at the same time helping to accomplish a much greater goal.

IAN JOYCE National Head Coach

JDRF Riders inspire me.

LORNE SHIFF National Head Coach

It is an honor to ride with so many dedicated volunteers and staff.

TIM ST. CLAIR National Head Coach

It provides the best perspective in watching these Riders make life bigger, for themselves and for others and an opportunity for me to have some input into that. I'm lucky to be a Coach.

Dennis Dumbauld Greater Fort Worth Arlington Chapter

Our Chapter is trying to build a Ride team and I want everyone to have a positive experience so we can find a cure.

love riding with others that have the same passion for a cure. And, I love recruiting new riders, who say they can't fundraise or ride 25-100 miles.

Christopher Rose JDRF Northwest Chapter

I wanted to be a JDRF Coach to find the utmost method to share the love of two wheels with my fellow T1D fighters.

Tim Martinek Eastern Iowa Chapter I was encouraged to do so by some fellow JDRF Coaches after I organized a training ride. It is truly the most rewarding job I have ever had.

Joshua Zilm Illinois Chapter

I am a JDRF Coach so that I can give as much support to JDRF as I can; the organization that will one day soon find a cure for T1D.

Teri Nitschke Southeastern Wisconsin Chapter

Allen Rogers East Tennessee Chapter

I wanted to multiply the benefit of my invested energy. I figure I may or may not have the ability to connect with others, inspire them to achieve, and help them follow through. By doing this, I would bring way more awareness and support to JDRF than through self-involved efforts alone.

The Bike Room If the "heart" of a JDRF Ride is at the Pre and Post-Ride dinner celebrations then the "gut" of a JDRF Ride must be in the Bike

Room! Far from just a place to find your bike or get your brakes adjusted - the Bike Room is the "engine room", the "rhythm

section", the "kitchen at a dinner party." In short - it's where the cool kids go to meet other riders, get the scoop on the weekend,

listen to music, share some snacks and tap into the lifeblood of the JDRF Ride. In other words - one of the first things most riders

do upon arrival is check out the Bike Room!

As has been the case since 2008, the Bike Room is under the watchful eye of National and Michigan Great Lakes West Chapter

Coach Mike "MC" Clark. The crew is there to answer your questions, make you feel welcome, solve your bike fit issues and do

whatever they can to make you feel as welcome and comfortable as can be.

The Nashville Bike Room will feature the return of none other than long-time Ride to Cure Head Mechanic Jeremy "Berger"

Berghorst! His duties as a dad and as 3rd

Coast Cycles Service Manager make it hard for us to get him out of West Michigan but

he'll be here in Nashville! Joining Berger and MC will be none other than Professor of “Bikeface” Patti Bills from Cincinnati as well

as Andy Grow. Patti is a long-time rider and Bike Room Guru and she'll be fresh off of her Ride in Death Valley. Andy is a co-owner

of 3rd

Coast Cycles and has been the head wrench for more than a dozen Rides. They'll be at your service!

Joining the Bike Room Crew is Raceday Transport, a full service bike transportation and logistics provider. They will be on site

assembling bikes and will be there packing them up after you’ve headed home. As you return from your ride on Saturday, you will

be greeted by Tristan Brandt who will pack up your bike and make sure it is returned to you!

Imagine a world without type 1 diabetes. A world where children (and parents) sleep through the night without fear. A day when an intelligent pump eliminates dangerous high and low blood sugars. A time when a single daily or weekly shot of insulin maintains tight blood sugar control with no carb counting. A life with no injections of insulin. The promise that no additional family members will develop type 1 diabetes. With your help, JDRF isn’t just imagining. We’re working to make it happen. Please join us to hear Derek Rapp, JDRF CEO and fellow Rider, lay out JDRF’s aggressive, forward-looking, yet realistic plan to cure, better treat and prevent type 1. Hear details about the advances made possible by your fundraising dollars and the positive impact they are having on people with type 1. The JDRF Ride Staff have some fun things planned to help celebrate Halloween throughout the weekend. We don’t

want to give away all of our surprises, but here is one you will want to be sure to prepare for!

We will kick off the weekend with Nashville singer/songwriter and friend of JDRF, Dylan Altman, along with his

songwriter friend Phillip White, who will provide some live entertainment in true “Nashville style” on Thursday night

after the Welcome Reception dinner as they perform the country hits that they’ve written! Dylan, whose brother had

T1D, has been writing songs and performing in Nashville for 18 years. His number one songs include Tim McGraw's

"Watch the Wind Blow By," and Jake Owen's "Barefoot Blue Jean Night."

On Ride Day, we encourage any friends and family members to wear their costumes at the finish line and while

volunteering at the check points.

This year, the Saturday Post Ride Celebration will be a Halloween Costume Party! The event will be held at the

Franklin Marriott. Prizes will be awarded for the best costumes, so we encourage you to get creative! Click here for

photos from last year’s party.

And for any riders bringing children who are looking to trick-or-treat after the Ride, be sure to ask the front desk at

the Franklin Marriott for recommendations in the local area.

As a reminder, child and adult meal tickets can be purchased in advance through the invitation email you should have

received from us, as well as on-site if they are still available.
