Research & Development Find a New Home at WOM’s Headquarters, Houston

WOM Inc. is proud to announce the opening of a state-of-the-art Research and Development facility. The new facility will allow WOM to perform in-house testing that will greatly speed up the new product development and qualification testing.

“Having this facility will allow us to complete projects in the span of a few months that would otherwise take years to complete,” Engineering Director Anand Kalimuthu said. “And owing to the fact that the testing will be done in-house, it will also significantly decrease the cost of developing and qualifying of our equipment.”

The new lab was designed from the ground up by R & D Manager Chad Chadwick. This lab includes two state-of-the-art environmental chambers for extreme temperature testing and three testing booths for room temperature testing. The temperature chambers are some of the most advanced in the world and offer WOM a testing capacity that is unrivaled by any other oilfield equipment provider in the world. The environmental chambers are capable of reaching temperatures from -100°F to 600°F.

The lab also includes an advanced control room from where the testing can be monitored remotely, providing a safe environment away from the actual product testing. This is possible by the several high definition remote controlled cameras installed in various locations in the lab. Safety was the number one priority while designing the lab. This being said, access to the lab is extremely limited and anyone who is allowed must go through the safety orientation before they enter the lab.

“Above all, safety is my #1 priority. Results don’t matter if someone gets hurt obtaining them. My goal is to operate a highly controlled testing environment that will allow WOM to make advancements to our products while maintaining an impeccable safety record,” Chad said.

Along the lines of safety and time saving, the process of automating the entire API 6A PR2 test procedure is being untaken. With this automation, the product is manually setup in the environmental chamber. Then, the program will take over, perform the complete testing and update the results as the tests progresses. This allows testing to be performed continuously through the nights and weekends.

The new R&D lab represents WOM moving forward in technology, commitment to produce superior products and to comply with standards and regulations. Many customers are demanding stringent tests and our new lab provides a means to perform such tests.

“Being part of the oilfield industry, many products we build have to be custom-built for each customer. A R&D department that can prove a product’s capabilities and that it can meet specifications & standards is necessary to be an industry leader that delivers products that exceed industry standards. Many of these standards are becoming mandatory, so having our own R&D department allows us to perform all of our own qualification testing and deliver them to the industry,” Anand said.

Anand and Chad would like to personally thank Mr. Sudhir Puranik for the tremendous support

that he gave this project- “Mr. Puranik accommodated all our requests & suggestions and has given us a facility which truly makes WOM a world-class company.”

This year, WOM made a donation to the American Heart Association’s Heart Walk, held on November 16th. The American Heart Association is an organization that focuses on promoting healthy lifestyles and raising awareness of cardiovascular diseases and strokes, their warning signs and how

to prevent them. The current mission is to improve the cardiovascular health of all Americans by 20% while reducing deaths from cardiovascular disease and stroke by 20% by 2020.

The 5K Heart Walk, held at Reliant Park, set a goal of raising $2,800,000. The Heart Walk surpassed its goal, raising $2,883,968 which will go towards completing the American Heart Association’s mission. While WOM did make a donation to the walk this year, no company team was directly sponsored or entered for the walk. Next year, look for a WOM team walking in the 2014 Houston Heart & Stroke Walk.

WOM’s Canemont manufacturing facility in Houston has expanded its capacity with the recent addition of several new state-of-the-art machines.

The first, a custom-built thermal welding machine, allows for rapid and efficient hardfacing of valve gates. Previously, the process required much more human input and only four gates could be coated at a time. Now, with the new thermal welding machine, up to 20 gates can be processed at once. The thermal welding machine uses three torches to apply the coating. A first torch heats the gates’ surfaces up to the temperature needed to apply the hardfacing. Next, two more torches follow close behind and blast the surface of the gates with the coating, permanently adhering them to the gate.

Additionally, two new CNC machines were purchased which will increase the total manufacturing capacity of the facility. A DBC 130 Doosan, CNC Boring Mill and a Puma 300LC CNC Turning center both bring sophisticated technology that will ensure the precision of the manufacturing process as well as boost the overall production rate exponentially.

Magnum Subsea Systems and WOM’s Emergency Response Team (C.E.R.T) organized a Fire Safety Awareness Week from July 29 to August 2, 2013, geared towards training employees on general fire safety precautions. The week was filled with a variety of activities and demonstrations aimed at spreading awareness and response techniques through the simulation of scenarios. Employees practiced situations such as an employee suffering an injury while evacuating to the assembly area and a small fire outbreak in the workshop. Posters, case studies on fire prevention and safety guidelines were displayed in common areas and fire safety awareness videos played continuously in the reception area.

Additionally, to help boost the confidence needed to respond in an emergency situation, employees were given AED/CPR and extinguisher demonstrations by qualified instructors. The fire extinguisher demonstration, which was led by Singapore Civil Defense Force Officers, provided hands-on training on how to operate fire extinguishers as well as educating staff on the different types of extinguishers available in the office and workshop.

At the end of the week, employees were quizzed on the information they received to evaluate their understanding of fire safety and prevention.

Celebrating Service Improvements

Offering quality service and operational excellence are top priorities at WOM. For that reason, WOM would like to congratulate Pongsakorn Cherdchaipan, WOM SEA Service Representation, for his contribution to the M-3 Exploration Campaign for PTTEP in Myanmar. Pongsakorn suggested and assisted in implementing a process improvement which successfully reduced time and cost during the installation of the 13-5/8” SPII Compact Wellhead.

While aboard the jack-up rig Hercules 208, Pongsakorn identified an area of improvement in the way the wellhead assembly was being run and installed. In the normal procedure, the wellhead is attached to a running tool, goes through the rotary table and placed in position. Once the wellhead is in the final position, the annulus valves are attached to the wellhead. In analyzing this procedure, Pongsakorn recommended to attach the annulus valves prior to the start of the operations and then have the wellhead lowered into position underneath the

rotary table with the help of a crane and winch. The rig team adopted the suggestion and successfully completed installation of the wellhead, saving 2 hours of critical path time.
