About the cover: Like scratches on a marble table, airplane contrails cut across the southern California Mojave Desert. The shadows from the contrails cast dark lines across the ground. Contrails form when cold, dry air mixes with warmer aircraft exhaust. Mountains and a few dry lakebeds provide a backdrop to this scene, along with bright green spots of agricultural land along the Colorado River. The background image, Earth as Art 4, comprises 37 stunning images captured by Landsat 8, the newest Landsat Program satellite.

3#GISITR2 GIS IN THE ROCKIES 2017

Welcome to the 30th annual GIS in the Rockies Conference! The 2017 Planning Committee is excited to be celebrating 30 years of GIS with you. At this year’s GIS in the Rockies Conference, we will be looking back at the amazing milestones and achievements of GIS and looking to the future full of new possibilities and exciting technology.

GIS in the Rockies began at Colorado State University in Fort Collins with approximately 75 attendees. The conference was envisioned as a venue to bring experts in the geospatial industry together to share knowledge, to offer networking opportunities, and to explore the latest innovations in GIS. Since its inception, we have seen the conference not only grow, but flourish. Last year saw the highest attendance ever, with nearly 550 attendees.

We have two exciting keynote speakers this year - Peter Batty and Aileen Buckley. Both Mr. Batty and Dr. Buckley have many years of experience in GIS. We encourage you to join us to hear their thoughts on where GIS has been and where GIS is headed.

Thank you to all of our sponsors, especially our Platinum Sponsor, CompassTools. Be sure to check out the many offerings by CompassTools, including the drone demo in the courtyard, the MX7 Tailgate Party, and the Spark Giveaway.

If this is your first time attending GIS in the Rockies, we have put together a new attendee guide to help you get the most out of the conference. If you are returning to GIS in the Rockies, we are happy to see you again. We have many offerings at this year’s conference for everyone: technical sessions, the Career Development Academy, pre-conference workshops, and much more.

Whether you are new to GIS in the Rockies or you are a familiar face, we’d like to thank each of you for attending GIS in the Rockies. You, as GIS leaders and professionals, are what makes GIS in the Rockies a success every year.

POST CONFERENCE TOURS Friday, September 22, 2017 NOTE: All tours require advance registration to attend. You can update your registration online at www.gisintherockies.org

NATIONAL OCEANIC AND ATMOSPHERIC ADMINISTRATION (NOAA)Located in Boulder, Colorado, NOAA supports a powerful array of research, data collection and dissemination programs, and operational weather forecasts of Earth’s atmosphere and the space environment. Most of NOAA’s Boulder activities take place in the David Skaggs Research Center. This Tour includes 4 stops within the David Skaggs Research Center, including the Space Weather Prediction Center, ESRL Global Monitoring Division, National Weather Service Forecast Office, and Science On a Sphere.

CELESTIAL SEASONINGSCelestial Seasonings’ tour in Boulder is always ranked among the best in the U.S. Unlock the mysteries of tea and see how their wholesome products are blended, packaged, and shipped. You’ll get a behind-the-scenes look at how tea is made – from raw ingredients (including the famous mint room!) to finished products. The GIS in the Rockies tour will be supplemented with geospatial info about their global supply chain. Before the tour, enjoy lunch at the Celestial Café. Afterwards, browse the tea shop featuring Celestial Seasoning teas and gifts.

DENVER BOTANIC GARDENS: CALDER MONUMENTAL EXHIBITAmerican artist Alexander Calder (1898-1976) is considered one of the most influential sculptors of the 20th century and is known for his bold energetic sculptures. ‘Calder: Monumental’ at the Denver Botanical Gardens will feature these iconic works of bolted steel plate, which rise in sweeping curves or puncture space with geometric lines, revealing the artist’s exploration of forms, volumes, and voids. Using shapes that resonate with the natural world, Calder’s large, lively abstractions interact with the surrounding landscape.

THE OLD MAP GALLERYLocated in Historic Lower Downtown Denver, The Old Map Gallery has specialized in antique and vintage maps for the last thirty years, with maps from the early age of exploration in the 1500’s, up to the 20th century and the beginning of space exploration. With a focus on Colorado and the West, they cover any part of the globe, and specialize in pictorial and culturally focused maps from the 1920’s -50’s.

STRANAHAN’S DISTILLERYStranahan’s Whiskey Distillery is proud to call Colorado home. As they say, “welcome to where the magic happens”. This distillery has been making single malt whiskey in Denver for over a decade. Nestled in the heart of the Rockies, they are able to source some of the finest ingredients the American West has to offer including the award winning spring water they use to proof their whiskey. Your Stranahan’s Tour will include the Distillery where you will sample their Diamond Peak & Original Single Malt Whiskies.
