PRIOR LAKE, Minn. (AP) — The Minnesota Vikings pro-vided Adam Thielen his over-coming-the-odds opportunity in the NFL, as an undrafted wide receiver from an NCAA Division II school.

As grateful and loyal as Thielen is to his home-state team, though, he’s not about to simply accept a discount for the new contract he’s in line for. After a breakout 2016 season, Thielen will become a restricted free agent on Thursday when the market opens.

“This is my team. I love this team. I’ve put in a lot of time and effort to help this team win games, and I’d love to be here,” Thielen said. “But at the same time, I want to be respected and for what I’ve done. I feel like I’ve proven that I can be a starter in this league, and I want to be respected in that way.”

The word respect was men-tioned several times by Thielen in a recent interview with reporters at an event for the team’s winter fan fest. There is plenty of respect within the organization for Thielen, an affable, diligent player who went largely unnoticed by col-leges at Detroit Lakes High School about 200 miles north-west of Minneapolis and had to sell himself to Minnesota State for a scholarship.

He impressed Vikings coaches and scouts enough to land on the practice squad as a rookie in 2013, stood out on special teams the fol-lowing year once he made the active roster and improved so steadily as a wide receiver that he became a full-time starter with Stefon Diggs last season. Thielen caught 69 passes for 967 yards and five touchdowns for an offense that ranked fifth-worst in the league in total yards.

“Being able to put the film out there that I did and prove that I can be a starter in this league, it’s put me in a good situation,” Thielen said, adding: “Hopefully I can stay here long term.”

Thielen co-owns a training center, ETS Elite Thielen , with partner Ryan Englebert, whom he has entrusted to work him out since leaving college.

Thielen has become well-versed in the business side of the NFL, too, peppering agent Blake Baratz with questions about the process and the rules.

The Vikings have placed a second-round tender on Thielen that’s worth a little more than $2.7 million for 2017 if he doesn’t sign a longer-term deal. The Vikings can match any offer he agrees to with another club, which would then have to give up a second-round draft pick by signing Thielen away from Minnesota.

The 26-year-old Thielen is hopeful he doesn’t even get to that point.

“It’s going to be cheaper now than it will be moving forward! This wasn’t a fluke,” Baratz tweeted on Wednesday. “The man can play ball. Period.”

Restricted free agents are often undrafted players like Thielen, since they become eligible after three accrued sea-sons. The standard for drafted players is typically a four-year contract. Once they get to their second contract, though, the round in which a player was drafted, if at all, no longer mat-ters. With an unrestricted free agent market that’s consid-ered thin, the price for players like Thielen could be high this month.

“That’s not really in my con-trol,” Thielen said, deferring to Baratz. “For me, it’s just going about my business and letting him earn his money.”

Thielen would love to have road-trip roommate and fellow wide receiver Cordarrelle Pat-terson back in 2017, but Pat-terson, also the team’s kickoff returner, is one of the unre-stricted free agents the Vikings might opt to let leave.

“In an ideal world we’d both be playing together on the same team,” Thielen said, “but there are so many different fac-tors that lead into my own situ-ation, let alone his situation, so I think we’re both just letting it play out and seeing what happens.”

NOTE: The Vikings re-signed OL Jeremiah Sirles, who was an exclusive rights free agent, on Wednesday. Sirles played both tackle and guard spots last year.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Paul George spent the first half Wednesday night trying to get his teammates started.

Then the four-time All-Star finally took charge.

George scored 13 of his 21 points during the second half of the third quarter, leading the Indiana Pacers on a decisive run and a 115-98 blowout over Detroit.

“We needed him to knock down some shots in the third quarter and he did that to extend that lead to about 20,” coach Nate McMillan said. “The second unit closed it out.”

Indiana trailed only once all night for a total of 22 seconds and finished with its largest vic-tory margin since a 21-point victory Feb. 4, also against the Pistons.

Before the game, Detroit coach Stan Van Gundy made it clear he was still searching for solutions to defend George, who had scored 26.3 points in the first three meetings this season and has routinely decimated the Pistons defense each of the past two seasons.

It still didn’t work.

“They destroyed us,” Van Gundy said “We didn’t play defense at all. They scored on anything they wanted and we didn’t guard at all.”

George was 7 of 12 from the field and finished with eight rebounds — taking the entire fourth quarter off with the rest of Indiana’s starters.

Five other Pacers also scored in double figures, but it was George’s third-quarter flurry that turned the game after Detroit took its only lead, 63-62 on a step-back jumper from Marcus Morris with 7:39 to go.

C.J. Miles answered with a 3-pointer on the ensuing pos-session, and George broke a 65-65 tie with a 21-footer to start a 25-8 quarter-closing run. George had nine points and three rebounds over the final 6:25 of the quarter, which ended with Indiana leading 90-73.

“We needed to get some stops but it seemed like they had a pretty good offensive rhythm, so I left them (the starters) in a little longer than usual,” McMillan said.

Detroit never got closer than 15 the rest of the way and was

swept in the four-game season series.

Tobias Harris led the Pistons with 22 points, Stanley Johnson had a season-high 17 and Andre Drummond wound up with 14 points and 15 rebounds for his 43rd double-double of the season.

Of all the gaudy numbers in the box score, two were of par-

ticular interest to McMillanFive turnovers, a season-

low, and 27 assists. Their pre-vious low on turnovers was six, also against Detroit on Feb. 4.

“We wanted under 10, so we did a solid job offensively,” McMillan said.

Detroit wasn’t bad either, finishing with 10 turnovers.

DENVER (AP) — The Washington Wizards built a big enough lead to withstand the Denver Nuggets’ late comeback bid.

John Wall would prefer not giving opposing teams the chance.

Wall scored 30 points, Bradley Beal had 23 and Wash-ington built a 24-point lead and held on to beat the short-handed Nuggets 123-113 on Wednesday night.

“When we find a way to get up 20-something points, the defense started to get like we didn’t play with the sense of urgency we played with to get that lead,” Wall said. “We’ve got to figure that out and do a better job of it because playing good teams in the playoffs, you don’t want to give them any life. We gave them a little bit of life, but the second unit did a good job at the beginning of the fourth and they held the lead.”

Otto Porter Jr. added 22 points for the Wizards, who have won nine of their last 12 on the road, including their first back-to-back set on the road this season. Washington edged Phoenix 131-127 on Tuesday.

“It was imperative that we set the tone, set the pace of the game and I think we did a good job doing that,” Beal said. “We just had some slippage on defense that almost cost us, but we did a good job of showing maturity

and poise.”The Nuggets were without

three of their starters. Nikola Jokic and Danilo Gallinari were both out because of illness, and Kenneth Faried was sidelined because of a back injury.

Gary Harris had 26 points for the Nuggets. Wilson Chandler added 21 and Mason Plumlee chipped in 19.

“We’ve been down people all year and we’ve beaten teams short-handed, so that’s not an excuse at all,” Harris said. “It

definitely hurt not having them but we also have to go out there and compete and try to get a win.”

Denver was down by 24 points before closing the third quarter on a 16-5 run, pulling to 97-85 going into the final period.

A dunk by Plumlee cut Den-ver’s deficit to 10 points, but Washington put together a 9-2 burst capped by a 3-pointer by Wall to rebuild the lead to 106-89. The Wizards scored enough to fend off the Nuggets, helped

immensely by Porter’s 3-pointer with 53 seconds remaining after Denver had closed within eight points.

“I loved the fact that being down we didn’t just roll over,” Nuggets coach Michael Malone said. “We had a great comeback, but we can’t put ourselves in a hole like that.”

Denver hung close early on but hit a lull as the Wizards led by as many as 19 points in the second quarter before taking a 67-50 lead at halftime. Beal

and Wall combined to score 28 points in the first two quarters.

After Chandler hit a jumper, Denver closed to 45-41 midway through the second quarter. Washington answered with an 18-3 burst that included 3-pointers by Beal and Wall.

TIP-INSWizards: Completed a sweep

of the two-game season series with Denver after being swept by the Nuggets last season. ... Washington improved to 17-7 when all five starters score in double figures. Wall also had 10 assists. ... Markieff Morris was ejected with 2:08 left to play after a flagrant foul 2 was called against him for a collision in which Plumlee took a hit in the groin area.

Nuggets: With Jokic, Galli-nari and Faried all out, Denver fielded its 27th different starting lineup, most in the league this season. ... Faried missed his sixth consecutive game due to his low back injury. ... Gallinari was out because of a bout with vertigo. .. Jokic missed a second consecutive game because of illness.

game road trip on Friday night, when they play the Sacramento Kings.

Nuggets: Wrap up a four-game homestand by hosting the Boston Celtics on Friday night.

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — Quarterback Tyrod Taylor is staying put in Buffalo.

The Bills ended two months of uncertainty on Wednesday by announcing Taylor would remain in Buffalo for a third season after agreeing to restructure his five-year con-tract extension. The deal was reached a day before the NFL’s free-agency period opens, and with Buffalo facing a deadline on Saturday on whether to acti-vate or opt out of the extension Taylor signed in August.

The move cleared the biggest offseason question for the Bills, who are undergoing their latest transformation under newly hired coach Sean McDermott , who took over in January after Rex Ryan was fired.

Saying the team took a methodical approach in exploring all options, McDer-mott credited Taylor for making the decision an easy one because of his desire to stay in Buffalo.

“This thing shaped up the right way and really, I feel this is a good move and in the best interest of the organization at this time,” McDermott said. “All these conversations about this and that, and which direc-tion we’re going? Well, this is where we are.”

In establishing a rap-port with Taylor the past two months, McDermott said he was impressed by the quar-terback’s character and work ethic. McDermott wouldn’t speculate on whether the Bills would have kept Taylor had he not agreed to restructure his contract by saying the team never reached that point in its decision-making process.

Taylor even questioned his future in Buffalo once Ryan was fired and the starter was benched for the Bills season finale against the New York Jets.

Buffalo did briefly explore at least one other option at quarterback by having pre-liminary talks with eight-year journeyman Brian Hoyer on Wednesday, according to a person familiar with the dis-cussions. The person spoke to The Associated Press because the sensitive nature of talk and because the Bills did not dis-close their plans.

The Bills’ interest in Hoyer, however, ended with Taylor’s decision to rework his contract.

Under the initial contract extension, Taylor was due to be paid just under $31 million in salary and bonuses during the first year of the deal, and count nearly $16 million against Buf-falo’s salary cap.

That’s a pricey amount for a team that was set to begin free

agency with about $22 million in salary cap space and with numerous needs to address including holes at receiver and defensive back.

The Bills quickly turned their attention to adding players, including two fullbacks.

A person with direct knowl-edge of the decision told The AP that Patrick DiMarco agreed to sign a four-year, $8.4 million contract in which $4.2 million is guaranteed. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the team has not announced the deal.

DiMarco has five NFL sea-sons of experience, including spending the past four with

Atlanta.The Bills announced they

agreed to sign former Carolina fullback Mike Tolbert, and re-sign punter Colton Schmidt, who had been released on Monday. The Bills also released receiver Marcus Easley, who has been sidelined since sus-taining an injury to his left knee in December 2015.

Taylor has a 15-14 record in two seasons with Buffalo. He signed with the Bills two years ago after spending his first four NFL seasons serving as Joe Flacco’s backup in Baltimore.

He’s coming off an incon-sistent season in going 7-8 last year.

HOUSTON (AP) — Utah coach Quin Snyder liked his team’s performance on Wednesday night against the Houston Rockets.

However, he thinks another factor may have been just as important in the victory.

“A lot of times you just have to be fortunate against a team that’s that good,” he said. “We were lucky tonight.”

Rudy Gobert and Gordon Hayward each scored 23 points to help the Jazz beat the Rockets 115-108 for their fourth straight victory.

James Harden had 35 points for the Rockets, who have lost two straight for just the third time this season.

The Rockets trailed by double digits for much of the game as they struggled from 3-point range. Houston was just 8 of 32 to end a streak of 18 straight games with at least 10 3-pointers.

Harden had an especially tough time from long range, missing all eight of his attempts.

“They’re a really good defensive team,” Harden said. “(But) we still had our looks, we still had opportunities. We just couldn’t knock them down.”

A pair of free throws by Harden cut Utah’s lead to four with less than two minutes remaining, but Joe Johnson hit a 3-pointer just before the shot clock expired on the other end to make it 110-103.

Three more free throws by Harden kept Houston in it, but Patrick Beverley missed a layup after a steal by Eric Gordon, and Gobert put it away

with a layup that made it 112-106 with less than a minute left.

“Late in the game we just couldn’t get one stop,” Harden said.

The Jazz won two of the three meetings, the first time since the 2011-12 season that they’ve won a season series over the Rockets.

Utah is in fourth place in the Western Conference, three games behind third-place Houston. But Gobert insisted he hasn’t thought much about trying to overtake the Rockets in the standings.

“It’s a big win ... but it’s a long season and this is only one game,” he said. “And we have another big game coming up. We just have to keep getting better and keep getting those wins.”

Hayward’s 3-pointer made it 103-94, but a layup by Harden cut it to 103-99 with less than three minutes left. Beverley then fouled Gobert in the paint on a play the Rockets thought should have been a charge, and he made both free throws.

Utah was up by 12 after a 3-pointer by Rodney Hood before Houston scored the next eight points, with six from Harden, to get within 69-65 with about seven minutes left in the third quarter. Harden wowed the crowd a few seconds after that when he blocked a shot by Raul Neto into the stands.

Houston later got within three, but a 7-1 spurt by the Jazz extended the lead to 82-73 with about two minutes left in the quarter.

The Jazz led 84-77 entering the fourth.

DALLAS (AP) — Bruce Irvin’s first payday in free agency wasn’t anywhere near what Oakland will have to offer to keep pass-rushing teammate and two-time All-Pro Khalil Mack.

The former first-round pick by Seattle qualifies as a high-value contributor just the same for a franchise that made the playoffs for the first time in 14 years.

Forget for a moment Irvin’s seven sacks , one off the career high from his rookie season after the Seahawks drafted him 15th overall in 2012. Consider the intangibles from a player who illus-trates what a relatively low-cost deal can mean in free agency.

“From the moment that Bruce arrived, he and Khalil had a natural competition or natural kind of bond where they were two alpha males,” Raiders coach Jack Del Rio said. “They were going to push each other really hard every day and compete every day.”

Irvin signed a $37 million, four-year contract with $14.5 mil-lion guaranteed after the Seahawks decided against giving him the fifth year on his rookie deal.

While quarterback Derek Carr and Mack got most of the head-lines — and Carr’s broken leg late in the regular season domi-nated the talk before and after a wild-card loss to Houston — the 29-year-old Irvin positioned himself to become quite a bargain if he finishes his current deal.

“I know I’m very capable of doing a lot of stuff,” said Irvin, who has 29 sacks in five seasons. “If they need me to spy, I’ll spy. If they need me to rush, I’ll rush. Any way I can help I’ll do it.”

Here’s a look at other high-value free agents from last year as teams start wrapping up what they hope will be similar bargains in 2017 as free agency opens Thursday:

LOW-COST NO. 1: Receiver Rishard Matthews led Tennessee with 945 yards receiving and nine touchdowns, and the 27-year-old tied Pro Bowl tight end Delanie Walker for the team lead with 65 catches. That career season came after signing a $15 million, three-year deal. Matthews was a seventh-round pick by Miami in 2012 and was coming off career highs of 43 catches for 662 yards and four TDs in 2015.

Titans general manager Jon Robinson said the key to finding bargains often starts with a receiver’s film. “Maybe he’s getting open a lot, but the quarterback’s not getting the ball to him. Maybe the quarterback just doesn’t have time to get the ball there for whatever reason,” Robinson said.

THE PEDIGREE RULE: Defensive end Chris Long had seven solid seasons with St. Louis as the second overall pick in 2008. But injuries kept him from being the star his dad, Hall of Famer Howie Long, was while winning a Super Bowl at the same position with Oakland. Long has his ring now as a steady influence with the New England defense on a $2.4 million, one-year contract.

“Any player that’s been through ups and downs, and everybody in this league has — injuries, whatever,” said Long, who turns 32 later this month. “Things can change quickly, and luckily I never gave up on it.”

ANOTHER HOUSTON FIND: Lamar Miller landed with the Texans after the Miami Dolphins decided to make Jay Ajayi their lead running back. And Houston promptly had its fourth different rushing leader in four seasons, in part because franchise leader Arian Foster missed significant parts of two of those years with injuries and wasn’t brought back in 2016.

In the first year of a $26 million, four-year deal with $14 mil-lion guaranteed, Miller fell 26 yards short of his career high of 1,099 yards. The 25-year-old helped the Texans overcome the struggles of high-priced free agent quarterback Brock Osweiler and reach the playoffs for the fourth time in six seasons.

ALL-PRO PAYOFF: Defensive tackles usually don’t get the big money, so Damon Harrison’s $46.2 million, five-year con-tract with the New York Giants ranks in the top 10 at his posi-tion heading into free agency this year. The 343-pounder, who is known to teammates as “Snacks” and is getting $24 million guar-anteed, had career highs with 55 tackles and 2 1/2 sacks to help New York’s defense improve from 30th to second overall.

Harrison, an undrafted free agent who played mostly nose tackle in four seasons with the New York Jets, was an All-Pro for the first time. And the 28-year-old has started all 16 games the past four seasons.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Southern California’s quest to reach the NCAA Tournament likely couldn’t survive a loss to one of the Pac-12’s worst teams.

The Trojans prevailed, and while it was a struggle, coach Andy Enfield believes they’ve now done enough to earn a bid.

Chimezie Metu had 24 points and nine rebounds, and USC withstood a poor start and sloppy finish to hold off Washington 78-73 on Wednesday night in the first round of the Pac-12 Tournament.

Bennie Boatwright added 13 points for the sixth-seeded Trojans, who ral-lied from 10 points down in the first half and then nearly blew a 14-point lead before securing a spot in Thursday’s quarterfinals against No. 3 UCLA.

“Our RPI is in the high 30s and we’re 24-8, so we feel like we’re in pretty good shape for the NCAA Tour-nament,” Enfield said.

David Crisp had 22 points, eight rebounds and seven assists for the Hus-kies (9-22) but missed a game-tying 3-point attempt in the closing seconds. Noah Dickerson scored 18 points, but Washington was undone by 10 second-half turnovers in its school-record 13th straight loss.

Washington, holding an RPI of 202 entering the day, played without poten-tial No. 1 NBA draft pick Markelle Fultz for a fourth straight game. The Pac-12 top scorer sat out with a sore knee, meaning the freshman’s college career is likely over.

The question now is whether coach

Lorenzo Romar will return. He said a report that indicated it had been decided he will be retained was false.

“I have not received any indications from the administration one way or another,” Romar said. “It’s an evalua-tion process going on right now.”

Washington tied a school record for losses in a season, but the Trojans still struggled for much of the night. USC didn’t put it away until Shaqquan Aaron hit two free throws with 3 sec-onds left.

Aaron had missed two free throws with 21 seconds remaining and De’Anthony Melton missed one with 34 seconds to go.

“When you miss two or three or four free throws at the end of the game, you give yourself a chance to lose,” Enfield said. “We didn’t lose tonight, but you saw in the NCAA Tournament last year we couldn’t make free throws.”

Washington came out hot in the teams’ second meeting in five days, with Matisse Thybulle (14 points) hit-ting three straight 3-pointers to put the 11th-seeded Huskies up 37-27.

But USC switching to a zone and Metu’s play inside fueled a 10-2 run to close the half. The Trojans took their first lead early in the second half on consecutive dunks by Metu.

Things unraveled for the Huskies from there. Malik Dime had to leave briefly with an apparent finger injury after blocking a shot. Then a foul and ensuing technical foul on Carlos Johnson led to Boatwright hitting four straight free throws and USC soon led

by 14.But late miscues led to some tense

moments before Crisp’s straightaway 3 clanged off the rim.

“It’s on us as players,” guard Jordan McLaughlin said of USC’s inconsis-tency. “The coaches do a good job get-ting us ready for the game. Defensive strategy and everything, they set it up perfectly, and it’s on us to come and play with energy.”

BIG PICTUREWashington: Romar did sign

Michael Porter Jr., the No. 1 player in the 2017 recruiting class, which could help him avoid getting fired.

USC: Thanks to a recent four-game losing streak and only two wins over AP Top 25 teams (UCLA, No. 12 SMU), falling to the downtrodden Huskies might have extinguished the Trojans’ NCAA Tournament hopes.

FULTZ’S LAST SHOTMaybe Fultz should have tried to

play while sitting on the bench. The freshman posted a video on his Twitter account from the shootaround in which he made a shot from the first row of the stands behind the basket.

UP NEXTWashington: Romar, the Pac-12’s

longest-tenured coach, hopes to return for a 16th season. “I think that our administration is very supportive,” he said.

USC: The Trojans split two games with UCLA, but the last meeting was ugly. The Bruins rolled at home, 102-70 on Feb. 18, and are hoping to secure a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

DEAR ABBY: I am a father of two girls. Both of them no longer see, talk to or contact me. I’m divorced from their mother. She cheated on me after she went back to work and met a man she decided was her soul mate. That was 17 years ago. I haven’t talked to or seen my ex in all those years, and slowly both daughters distanced themselves from me until there was no relationship at all.

On Father’s Day, my birthday or Christmas I never hear a word from either one. I tried numerous times to be a father to them. My youngest was recently married and didn’t invite me to her big wedding. I had been saving money over the years in case one of them needed help with a home or wedding.

I have to say I am hurt. What could I have done to be a father when they didn’t want me in their lives? I talk to people and they keep telling me stories similar to mine. Is this common? -- REJECTED DAD OUT WEST

DEAR DAD: Let me put it this way: It’s not unheard of. Something called “parental alienation” some-times happens in bitter divorces, when one parent poisons the children’s minds against the other. If I had to guess the reason for it in your case, it would be that your ex didn’t want the girls to know the reason for the divorce was her infidelity.

There is nothing you can do about it now, because a mindset and a pattern have been set. Had you insisted on counseling for you and the girls when you realized the distancing was happening, you might have kept the lines of communication open.

Things may improve one day when your daughters have children who are curious about meeting you, but in the meantime, for your own sake, please go on with your life and don’t dwell on your disappointment.

• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •DEAR ABBY: I’m a 13-year-old girl who is blessed to have both sets of grandparents alive and

healthy. Recently, my dad’s mother has become very quiet and reserved at social events. She was never the “I need to talk to everyone” type, but at the last few family gatherings she wouldn’t involve herself in a long conversation with anyone. When my other grandparents tried to talk to her, her answers were curt and it was obvious she would rather not talk.

At first we thought it was because of my baby cousin, who cried nearly every time my grandmother held her. Thankfully, that has stopped. Other family members have noticed her behavior, and we are unsure of what may be causing it. -- SILENT TREATMENT IN NEW YORK

DEAR SILENT TREATMENT: Your grandmother may be upset about something, and her refusal to talk could be her way of expressing her displeasure, or she may be having a personal problem she’s not ready to discuss. Because other family members have noticed and are commenting about it, your par-ents should tell your grandfather that the family is concerned and ask him for an explanation, because he may be in a position to shed some light on it.

Happy Birthday: Your options will change as you move toward your goals. Don’t hesitate to take hold of something that can help you make your dreams come true. Opportunity will thrive if you partner with someone who has the ability to get things done. Think big, then figure out a way to get the most for the least. Your numbers are 5, 12, 23, 28, 36, 39, 45.
