This term all children at Ashfield Public School, from Kindergarten to Year 6, will complete an individual or group project focused on working mathematically. The project, tailored to the range of ages and abilities across the school, is about open ended thinking and mathematics in the real world.

Working mathematically in the 21st Century classroom is something that can be confusing to people who have been out of primary school for a while. Stepping into the classrooms of our past, working mathematically or mathematical thinking was often perceived as the ability to get a 100% correct on a test paper. Think the perfect page of long division that earned the gold star from the teacher. In this type of classroom, working mathematically was top heavy with precise mathematical strategies.

Mathematical strategies are still at the heart of teaching maths, but in 21st Century classrooms, working mathematically means much more. Working mathematically is about applying mathematical knowledge, skills and understanding in a broad range of contexts beyond the mathematics classroom, including science, HSIE, history and English.

Open ended maths tasks are a highly effective way of facilitating mathematical thinking. Open ended tasks engage students in genuine mathematical activity and are about developing the skills to become flexible and creative users of mathematics. An example of an open ended task is an activity where a student, as part of a project on global connections, applies their understanding of a calendar and 24 hour time to identify available international flights using the Qantas website.

Within open ended tasks, working mathematically involves effective communication. For example, not only might a child be taught how to create an

accurate column graph, but then also learn how to communicate the information it

contains. Perhaps data on how children come to school might form the basis of an article about bike racks which could then be published in the school newsletter.

Working mathematically within an open ended task typically also includes reasoning. This is about students analysing, proving, evaluating, explaining, inferring and justifying. It also includes problem solving and the ability to use digital technologies. Think for example of a student using an iPad to make a video recording as they explain how trading was used to complete a subtraction sum.

Our Term 3 open ended maths projects are based on the theme of ‘Here in our Garden’. They are about providing a snapshot to share with our community how, as a whole school, we are fulfilling the working mathematically requirements of the NSW Mathematics Syllabus. A selection of these projects will be on display later this term at the Garden Festival.

STAGE 2STAGE PAGEHere in Our GardenHi! My name is Arya and I am 9 years old. I attend Ashfield Public School (A.P.S).

This term, our subject is ‘Here in Our Garden’ which is basically a unit that is based on gardens. Did you know that fruits and veggies also come from gardens? Well, they do!

Gardens are a way of saving money. Do you know how? Well, it’s quite simple. When we buy vegetables we spend money but when we grow vegetables we don’t have to pay for it. Are you fond of fruits and veggies? Do you know how important they are for you? Carrots help you see in the dark, mandarins help your brain and so on.

Every fruit and every vegetable plays a role in your body.

Gardens don’t just have to have fruits or flowers. They can also be just some plain old fields full of grass. That can be a garden. Parks can be a garden. We’ve got quite a lot of parks in our Ashfield area. Ashfield Park, Pratten Park and maybe some parks that I might not know of.

I also have some questions for you to answer (I don’t know the answer).

    • What are catchment areas?

    • What are some native plants to the Ashfield area?

Please learn what gardens really are from this book.

    Happy Adventuring!

Devices + Movie MakingIn Stage Two lots of people brought their own personal devices to school to make movies and use the internet if they need information in a lesson.

Devices are not used for playing games. Students are not allowed to call, text their friends and they are also not allowed to take them outside without teacher’s permission.

Movie making is a great experience for students who have great imaginations and because we really like making movies. To make a movie, you need to write a script then get people to learn the script and make the movie. Devices are really useful when you need the internet because you don’t have to go all the way to the library to use the iPads or the computers. We hope our movies will be selected for the Garden Festival and Council.

Fun in Walgett By Malachi Loader

In the holidays, I went to Walgett by train and bus with Jaylen, my brother Shane, my Nan and all my cousins. When I got to my Nan’s house I went outside to climb trees with my cousins. We played soccer and football. My dad made a goal-post and my cousin Jaden kicked the ball into the goal post and scored.

My Nan is a good cook. She makes shepherd’s pie which in my favourite food. After dinner we eat cake, custard and cream.

In the bedroom where I sleep there are nine people in the room, 8 boys and 1 girl. There are two trundle beds. We go to bed between 7:30pm and 8:30pm. We go straight to sleep.

I like going to Walgett because I miss my cousins and my dad.

STAGE 3STAGE PAGEVisit to Ashfield LibraryOn Wednesday 23rd July, Stage 3 went to Ashfield Library to learn more about gardens. We got time to browse and borrow some books. We also got a chance to see a worm farm and a few gardens. Some were vertical gardens and some were on the ground. We all had a great time and learned a lot.

Did you know you can use hair in compost? The staff at the council said that some people do. Some websites agree, with a well-known author at www.yahooanswers.com saying, “Surprisingly, human hair is an excellent compost material, and it adds significant structure to the surrounding soil. Some organic gardeners have hang-ups about using any human by-product in soil, but you can be rest assured that human hair is safe and pathogen-free compost material. Because it takes a long time to decompose roughly 1-2 years. It is a very slow release fertilizer and will gradually restore nitrates to your garden soil.”

Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) Dear Parents & Carers,

Ashfield Public School has commenced a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) initiative. The initiative is about enabling students to access technology at any time throughout the school day, anywhere in the school. Examples include a student at a desk consulting an online dictionary or a student taking photographs of 3D shapes in the school playground.

As part of the BYOD initiative, students will be taught how to effectively use technology to support learning. This includes, for example, the whole school emphasis on developing critical thinking, on being able to write for sustained and appropriate periods of time, on public speaking, physical activity and being able to concentrate whilst learning.

Children who do not have access to a personal device will be able to share the school’s devices which at this stage, consist of 10 iPads. All children will continue to have access to the PC’s in the library and throughout the school. This includes access to printing facilities.

Please read the attached extract from the School Handbook (available to download on the school website) for detailed information about the BYOD initiative.

Ramadan is an Islamic month that commenced during the school holidays. Sadly came to an end on the 28th July. During Ramadan, Muslims do the following:

    1. Wake up before sunrise, eat, drink and get ready for a day of fasting

    2. Take an easy day and not work too hard to increase your need for food and water

    3. Wait for the radio station to announce sunset time, which is around at 5:15pm, and then you may eat and settle for the day

    That’s a Muslim’s day in Ramadan.

    Here in our Garden Project

Kindergarten to Year 6 will be participating in a program called ‘Here in our Garden Project’. All students will receive a booklet that will tell them information about our local area. This program is child focused for the students to think about the garden. The Support Unit, Stage 1 and Early Stage 1 have been learning about gardening through hands-on activities including planting some plants in the garden, in the courtyard and making their own mini-greenhouses. While some Stage 2 and Stage 3 are designing their own garden, brochures, guide for plants, designing their blueprints for gardening drones, greenhouses, vertical gardens, sculptures and other interesting garden-inspired projects. When we finish our products, they will be displayed at the garden festival.

    NAIDOC

NAIDOC week was celebrated and held across Australia. This year’s NAIDOC theme honours all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men and women who have fought in defence of country. Each July, Australia celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

On Friday 11 July, I went to a NAIDOC Celebration in Redfern where all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders all gathered to celebrate at NCIE, National Centre of Indigenous Excellence on George St. We commemorate and celebrate this day for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people across Australia who fought in and out of Australia.

If you see the picture with the 3 men you can see in the waters reflection 3 Aboriginal men. NAIDOC is a special thing for everyone in Australia and I am very proud to be part of it.

    .

NAIDOC Day ActivitiesThis year Ashfield Public School celebrated NAIDOC Day on Monday 21st July. Firstly, we separated into stages. All of the activities were based on Aboriginal themes with five activities for each group. Stages 2 & 3 had

history, dust echoes, bush tucker foods, IT-iPads and the National Anthem (in Aboriginal language). Stage 1 & Early Stage 1’s activities were painting wooden snakes, Aboriginal objects, craft echidnas, dreaming stories and Indigenous art. Everyone had a wonderful day and we would like to thank the teachers and volunteers for their organisation and support on the day.

    SRC Executive

The SRC Executives have introduced a new system to the house points. Every time the students donate a cent, gold coin or note, each cent is worth 1 house point. For example, 5 cents would equal 5 house points and one dollar is worth 100 house points. So start donating! Every classroom will have a box labelled LACLA. Remember, every cent helps a child’s life.

    Maths with KevinAlgebra

Do you know what algebra is? If you don’t, I am going to explain it to you. Algebra is a

sum involving 2 or more numbers

    E.g. 10 X a = 20, a=2

In algebra one number has to be replaced by a sign or a letter.

    Here are some more examples

    5 X b = 15, b=3

    18 X 10 = x, x= 180

    18 X 8 = b, b=144

    These are basic algebra sums.

Hopefully you guys have learnt what algebra is!

Chinese Ambassador ReportThe badminton competition Round 1 started last week. We started with the boy’s and girl’s single matches for Stages 2 and 3. They were really close matches!

We were all really nervous, wondering who will win the competition for Round 1. Congratulations to the winners, they tried their best. For those people who tried and had a loss, we wish them better luck next time. Ms Yao will be assisting Mrs Lau to organise the badminton club from now on.

Math ProjectsStages 2 and 3 have been busy working on their Math projects. Stage 2 students have chosen a group or are working in pairs to solve problems about creating vegetable gardens, fruit orchards or some small farm animals. Stage 3 is focusing on data and graphs and collecting information and displaying it in graph form. Our projects are based on our ‘Here in our Garden’ topic for this term. Some students are measuring gardens, plants, looking at soil and green spaces. Some students are even monitoring the amount of sunlight exposure on certain areas in the garden at various times of the day. Most students are using their own device to record and document data.

    BYOD Survey

A new term has started and everybody is ready for some garden excitement. One of the things that we are being introduced to this term is: Bring Your Own Device (BYOD). Students don’t bring their device to school to play with, it’s actually used for:

    1. Creating a film or taking photographs as part of a school project

    2. Composing text including note taking

    3. Interacting with an education app

And some of the student’s comments were:

    1. We’re excited about BOYD

    2. My friends and I are going to bring our phone

    3. It’s something new to experience

    4. I wish that BOYD follows on next year

    5. I think it is improving my education

    6. Sometimes it’s annoying because internet doesn’t always work – but there is now a new password

    7. The year six photographers for the newsletter are looking forward to taking photos for each edition!

We hope that A.P.S is enjoying BYOD to school and that it helps them with their education.

The day I walked the Principal’s dog by RosieOn Thursday, during the last week of the school holidays I walked the Principal’s dog. Her name is Coco. Coco is a house dog. She went for a walk with Sam (Heidi’s dog). My mum and I took Sam and Coco to the dog park. They played there for a bit. Soon, some big dogs came to the dog park so we went home. I think Coco had a lot of fun and I did too.
