Welcome back to another exciting school term. We hope you had a fabulous Easter and enjoyed the holiday break finding time for family and friends. This term we’re making some exciting changes to Literacy, starting with Writing. On Tuesday through Thursday all of Take Flight will meet at 9:00am immediately after the roll for instructional writing. From there writing workshops will be run catering to children’s specific goals and needs. In maths we will be looking at measurement, with ongoing work on basic facts, number knowledge and problem solving strategies. Our school has an ongoing focus on developing social and emotional intelligence and well being and many of learning experiences are directly linked to this. Take Flight’s Classbook will continue to be a part of children’s daily routine, with this term’s focus expanding to include expressing emotions using Te Reo. The importance of being at school on time: If students are frequently late it can affect their friendships, slow academic progress and form bad habits, which can be difficult to change as teenagers and later on in the work force. Students who arrive at school with time to spare before the bell are able to settle in socially, independently complete their morning jobs and focus their minds on the lessons to come. It ensures they never miss out on important information and are fully involved in classroom routines and expectations. Help your child succeed by ensuring they arrive at school on time every day . Tuakana Teina time: This term Tuakana Teina time has two areas of focus. On Monday afternoon it will be Technology Challenges hosted by Take Flight. On Wednesday afternoons it will be Science hosted by the year 5/6 classes. Pick up of children on Wednesday’s will be from their senior buddy class. Children can bring a pair of slippers to wear in class during T2 & T3. • Cross-Country Week Three - Thursday 7th May (postponement date Monday 11th May) is the Welcome Bay School

Cross-Country. Training for this event was already well underway at the end of Term 1 and will continue daily to ensure children are well prepared and steadily building their fitness. Children are encouraged to bring shoes suitable to run in and a drink bottle to make sure they stay hydrated. If your child requires an inhaler make sure its in their bag or available at school. Please be aware that shoes may get wet, as our autumn/winter weather can be very changeable. We are looking forward to seeing you at cross-country and hearing you cheer the children on.

Here are some specific ways we use in class to teach children to work out words. Try them out at home when reading to and with your children each night.

    How was your day?

Thank you for your support and remember our door is always open

Sometimes our kids can be less than obliging when talking to us about their days at school. Here are a couple of ideas of things you could ask to get them thinking and talking:

    1. What was the best thing that happened at

school today? (What was the worst thing that

    happened at school today?)

    2. If I called your teacher tonight, what would she

    tell me about you?

    3. What do you think you should do/learn more/less

    of at school? Why?

    4. If you got to be the teacher tomorrow, what

    would you do?

    5. How did you help somebody today or how did

    somebody help you today?
