Welcome to the inaugural issue of The City College of

New York’s Office of Government and Community Affairs newsletter.

This quarterly newsletter is aimed at highlighting our office’s

endeavors to fortify and expand City College’s presence within the

Harlem community.

As City College’s link to political and civic engagement, our

office is active on many fronts. We promote a passion for lifelong

learning to community youth through the management of grant

funded educational programs. Our Office of Events Management

ensures the successful execution of community-based and college

sponsored events on Campus. The Office of Government and

Community Affairs also serves as City College’s cultural connection.

We are most visible when reaching out to the community through

the visual and performing arts: from art exhibits on Amsterdam

Avenue to concerts and plays at Aaron Davis Hall, we are committed

to producing robust artistic and vanguard programs for City College

and the Harlem community.

In the President’s Strategic Plan, President Coico calls for a

college-wide culture steeped in the arts. In response to the

President’s initiative, art historian and quilt artist, Dr. Myrah Brown-

Green, was appointed Executive Director of Arts and Culture under

the Office of Government and Community Affairs. Dr. Brown-Green

curates both The Gallery at Aaron Davis Hall, and City’s community

gallery, Windows on Amsterdam. Most recently, Dr. Brown-Green

curated the popular “Harlem and The City” exhibit on Amsterdam

Plaza which brought together a diverse array of photography and

history, illustrating the remarkable interdependent relationship

between The City College and Harlem.

Aaron Davis Hall is another integral part of our office’s

commitment to the arts. Since becoming Managing Director of Aaron

Davis Hall in 2011, Gregory Shanck has hit the ground running,

programming events such as a tribute to legendary Latin music

composer and City Professor, Ray Santos, which brought together

great musicians from around the world. Aaron Davis Hall has also

presented R&B vocalist Lillias White, jazz and tap performer Andrew

Nemr, as well as avant-garde stage actor Daniel Beatty. In January,

Aaron Davis Hall received capital funding from the New York City

Council for renovations, ensuring Aaron Davis Hall will continue to

be one of Harlem’s premiere performing arts centers for years to

come.

Most importantly, the office of Government and Community

Affairs is City College’s political liaison. Within the next year, in

addition to the race for the Mayor and the Borough of Manhattan

Presidency, two Harlem City Council seats will be up for election. As

the names and faces of our key elected officials change, The City

College is committed to bridging communication between the

Harlem community and their city and state representatives.

For the past century, The City College of New York has

journeyed alongside the dynamic, ever-evolving community of

Harlem. We are proud of the great strides we have made and are

excited about the many challenges and successes that lie ahead. The

office of Government and Community Affairs is dedicated to keeping

the pace as the paths shift, to facilitate the bridge between the College and the Community.

intermediate schools and High Schools, the

community, local businesses and other city and

state agencies, provide dropout prevention

services to students who attend school or live in

the Harlem and Washington Heights

community. This program is known as the Urban

Scholars. Its overall mission is to challenge

student participants to become leaders of

tomorrow. The Urban Scholars create and provide

activities designed to address the academic,

social, personal and cultural needs of each

participant.

One of the programs that make up the

Urban Scholars is Upward Bound.

Upward Bound is one of the programs under

“TRIO,” an initiative that was begun as part of

President Lyndon B. Johnson’s War on Poverty. Its

focus is on preparing first generation, low-income

students for college.

The goal of Upward Bound is to prepare

youth for success in educational and/or training

endeavors beyond high school by developing

skills needed and the motivation necessary to

become successful both academically and

socially. The program services 77 students and

their families. Using a "Back-To-Basics" Approach,

participants receive instruction in English, Math,

and Science. They also receive career and

personal development training and exposure to the Fine Arts.

Upward Bound

It is estimated that over 2.2 million students

This past February, Dr. Myrah Brown

Green was invited by the Michigan State

University Quilt Museum through the Cuesta

Benberry Endowment and the African

American and African Studies PHD Program

to deliver her lecture titled “A Quilter’s

Journey” to a group at Michigan State

University. Dr. Green is the first recipient of

the endowment, named for the late Cuesta

Benberry, a historian and scholar who

specialized in North American quilt culture of

the nineteenth through twenty-first centuries.

Michigan State University holds Benberry’s

collection of quilts, research, and various

other forms of scholarship. Presently

Benberry’s papers are being integrated into

Michigan State University’s research

database, MATRIX. During her visit to MSU,

Dr. Green had the opportunity to meet with

the administrators of MATRIX (Center for

Humane Arts, Letters, and and Social Sciences

Online). MATRIX is a multimedia initiative

specializing in expanding the use of new

technologies to enhance education and

research. Dr. Green and the leadership at

MATRIX discussed how City College could

benefit from a research think tank like

MATRIX. A database of its kind would support

City College’s academic endeavors. It could

also be an indispensable educational tool that

could benefit educators and researchers for

years to come. The City College continues to

explore new technologies and programs that

will aid in achieving the college’s vision of

becoming a world-renowned research

institution.
