Summer holiday edition July 2016
This year’s Year 11 Prom was held on Friday 24 June, with students arriving at school by means of a wide variety of methods of
transport.
Well done and thank you to the Year 11 students who formed this year's Prom Committee: Cameron Barden, Megan Cowdell, Nathaniel Jones, Rachel Jones, Evan
Mansfield, Zoe Marcar, Faith Naylor, Jessica Nock, Tom Nock, Ellis Smith, Paige Smith, Lauren Standley and Eleanor Ralley. Mrs Padfield has asked us to pass on her thanks to Wenlock Spring for once again
providing complimentary bottles of water for the event, and to Bradley Fenton for helping to set up.
Pictured here arriving at the Prom are Lauren Chettle, Charlie Sheargold and Mattie Shannon. See pages 18/19 for more Prom photos, with thanks to Mr Bertrand!

Acting on a suggestion from Ms Partridge, his PSHE teacher, Bradley Jones 10B7 recently entered a UK-wide writing competition organised by The Day online newspaper for young people - and won!
Brad was one of two joint winners, the other winner being a Sixth Form student. The Day were amazed at the quality of Brad’s entry, coming from someone in Year 10, and described him as a ‘brilliant winner’. Spokesman Jake Slater added:
“We called for students to write opinion pieces reflecting on the result of the EU referendum. Brad

This has been another great year, building upon the successes of 2014-15. We are hoping to improve upon our GCSE performances although the multitude of
changes made nationally mean that the key headlines that judge schools have changed. I have tried to send out messages about this but we are estimating how well we have done based on old measures and the new ones that will be published have no comparators available. I know that the Primary sector have had equally difficult changes and it is making it hard to predict accurately in the way we used to be able to do. In these times you can only look at the factors that you can control: our Year 11 and Sixth Form students have worked really hard; staff have committed both inside the classroom and through extra support sessions; holiday revision sessions have been well attended and attendance has been very good until the end of the exam period. Together this means that we should continue to build our strengths and hopefully more students will leave school with the qualifications and experiences that they need to build successful futures.
Many of the experiences students have lie inside the walls of our school but much happens around our curriculum offer. This is key to why we have such positive relationships in school, where staff and students know each other from a variety of contexts. These include:
A series of Year 6 induction events for students and parents, with our capacity once again stretched by the high number of first choices. Thanks must go to Mr Anderson and Mrs Birt for arranging the major events but also to many of our support staff who have made visits to the primary schools in an attempt to smooth this tricky process.
A high number of Sixth Form applicants attended our induction week, with the promise of our biggest Sixth Form ever in September. Thanks must go to Mr Crook, Mr Connolly and Mrs Steele.
Incredibly high attendance at Parents Consultation Evenings, of over 90% across the year. I am grateful to you all for coming and sharing the latest picture of each student’s academic progress.
A new timetable that was started in mid-June, with thanks to Miss Murray for the work that allows this structure to be put in place.
Attendance at the school Prom, where lots of staff came and supported probably the best event to date. Pictures can be seen on the website. Mrs Padfield, Miss Hatton and the site team deserve a special mention.
Despite significant administrative support required for all the above, we achieved an annual audit result with only one recommendation, with particular credit to Mrs Henderson, Mrs Cooke and Mr Bainbridge.
A smoothly run exam series despite a higher concentration of papers due to terminal rules; special thanks to Mrs Robinson and Miss Brown. This puts immense pressure on students who typically sat over 20 different exams, which are getting longer in time and harder in the challenge and standard.
Increased attendance monitoring systems that are having a positive effect on figures. The work of Miss Lovelace and our new Education Welfare Officer, Mrs Greatorex makes our expected annual attendance to be very close to 95%.
Support and drive from Teaching Assistants and Library staff for the new accelerated reader programme. This is making a big impact on many of our students. Nearly three quarters of all students have made good progress
from the reading tests data we have available and will continue to be a focus for next year and beyond.
Some significant changes lie ahead.
The new Year 10 GCSE courses will be graded on a 1-9 scale, moving away from the old A*-G. Students starting Year 11 in September will get this number scale for their Maths and English grades.
Tougher exams with higher marks/fewer students getting high grades across the country.
Moves to make all students take EBacc from 2018 and so Year 8 students will now study French for three hours per week.
This year we have provided feedback about student progress now that levels are removed at KS3. Next year all students in Years 7-9 will receive reports that contain this ‘life after levels’ language. New Year 7 students will be used to this too. It is obvious that we will be able to use a singular scale now to plot progress through the school towards their GCSE exams. This has been a large part of our work in the second half of the year. We are discussing practice with both partner Primary and Secondary schools.
A list of staffing changes is given on page 23, but I must add a personal note here. Mrs Turner has led the PSCHE team for 11 years. The last two years have seen some outstanding GCSE results and good uptake numbers. Many students have admired her passionate approach to her subject, delivering lessons of quality with a focus on social development. The school has been lucky to have such a caring teacher.
A massive thank you to Mrs Cloud for all the work she has done this year organising and co-ordinating the many interview days we have held in our quest to find the best possible teachers to replace those who are leaving us.
Extra-Curricular
This year has seen a wide range of activities again in this last two months in the Performing Arts including:
W Factor
Wenlock Festival
Summer Dance Production
As ever there has been a significant contribution made by the staff and students to this area of the school. The summer dance was probably the best performance in my recollection, with strong performances from our students and a lovely combination of primary pupils too. The staging and imaginative use of resources led to an outstanding experience for the audience and I am grateful to the technical team for their work.
In addition, we have seen a wide range of activities in PE including Interhouse competitions, Athletics competitions, Swimming galas, Summer School Games, Cricket, Sports Day and Sports Leader involvement with primary school events.
There has been a lot to celebrate over the last two months. We have seen stronger performances in many competitions through the hard work of a committed team of staff. Under Mrs Humphreys and Miss Hatton, the interest in Swimming and Biathlon has gained further recognition with regular clubs in school supporting the good work done by Northgate and the Wenlock Olympians. Achievements in these areas have led to students competing at high levels but Elle Humphries has taken this to national recognition in Portugal, with a very creditable 9th in the European Biathlon Championships. Louise Edmonds will swim in the British Championships at 50m breaststroke; Toby Jones is national champion at shot putt and Drew Wright has qualified for Team GB, sailing at the European events in Italy for the last time in an individual rig.
![Page 3: T H E E D G E - William Brookes Schoolstudents competing at high levels but Elle Humphries has taken this to national recognition in Portugal, with a very creditable 9th in the European](https://reader033.vdocuments.mx/reader033/viewer/2022060704/6070410888d5eb2592096b07/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
Hockey continues to grow as a major sport in the school under the guidance of Mr Hennessey and I am again amazed at the amount of individual and team success at County and Midlands level.
Netball has achieved outstanding success too with the Year 7 team winning the County Plate competition and the Year 11 being the top state school team in the County.
In addition, students have also participated in the following activities and visits: St Omer, France; Duke of Edinburgh in South Shropshire and a GCSE Art visit to Manchester. I would like to pay a special tribute to the Rotary Club of Ironbridge, which, over the last twelve months, has supported us by inviting our students to participate in their Young Photographer, Young Chef and Public Speaking competitions and their Young Leaders Award scheme. To thank them for their support, the members were invited into school for a meal prepared by DT Food students under the careful guidance of Mrs Jones. Students were successful in all the competitions mentioned and in June I was privileged to receive an honorary membership of the club on behalf of the school.
So as another academic year comes to an end, I would like to thank you as parents for your continued support of the school; our students who make this school the great place that it is to learn; our staff and governors who work tirelessly to ensure that the experiences of young people are of the highest quality but notably the Year 11, 12 and 13 students who have reacted so positively across the year and we hope you gain the results you truly deserve.
I hope that you have a lovely summer holiday and come back refreshed to build on the successes of this one.
Who remembers this? We’ve had a dig around in our archive, and found the front page story from our Christmas 2003 edition. Mrs May, accompanied by the Conservative candidate for the Ludlow constituency Philip Dunne, visited our school library (in the old building, of course) on 24 October that year, which was our Golden Jubilee year, to debate political issues with some of our Sixth Form students. They even discussed the leadership of the Conservative Party which was being contested then too; Mrs May (who was then Chair of the Conservative Party), told us that she was supporting Ian Duncan Smith. He didn’t win; Michael Howard was elected leader of the party, which was then in opposition, on 6 November. Tony Blair was Prime Minister at the time.
A photo of Mrs May visiting our school appeared in The Times the following day, but all the pictures above were taken by WBS student newsletter photographer/reporter Johnathon Rogers, pictured right showing Royal visitors the Earl and Countess of Wessex a display of school newsletters in 2003, and far right, more recently! He now lives in Toronto and works for the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, having graduated from Trent University with a degree in Economics.

During Religious Studies we have been taking part in a country-wide project looking at cultural and religious equality, and the impact that racial discrimination and stereotyping has on religious groups in modern Britain. Sadly, religious communities have been faced with discrimination due to the fear of terrorist organisations claiming to be acting out God’s wishes.
As a sign of respect and remembrance, Year 7 students have gathered their thoughts together to create a remembrance board (pictured below) for those who lost their lives during the recent Orlando shootings.

GCSE History and RS students have an exciting year ahead of them with visits to London and Germany planned!
In October, as part of their studies on Crime and Punishment, Year 11 History students will be visiting lots of exciting places in London such as the Royal Courts of Justice, Imperial War Museum and the Tower of London. They will also be transported back in time to the dark Victorian Streets for a Jack The Ripper Tour.
Year 10 History and RS students will be visiting Germany next February. To enhance their learning of Nazi Germany, students will have the opportunity to visit key historical locations in Nuremberg and Munich such as the Nazi Rally Grounds and the Dachau Concentration Camp.
RS students will be focusing on the challenging Nature of God and analysing the problem of evil that arises from this subject.
We will report back on our visits in future newsletters.

Parents! Don’t make it easy for your child to lose track of costly school items! Please make sure that all your child’s clothing and equipment is clearly marked with his/her name!
Items are often mislaid, and the school’s Reception office staff regularly find themselves inundated with mounds of coats, shoes and bags, etc., often with no indication as to whom they belong. Following Shropshire Council guidelines, all un-named and unclaimed items which have been held for more than one month will be disposed of.
Lost Property
Parents - please remind your child/children that CHEWING GUM IS
NOT ALLOWED IN SCHOOL.
This term we have held or helped at many school events. These included Quiz nights, a Soul/Mowtown night, 'Summers Here, let’s party!' and a Dance night.
Friends of William Brookes manned an information stand at the Year 6 parents’ induction evening. It was great to see new parents and we had a good number of new interested parents keen to assist, so we welcome them onboard!
We have also been pleased this year to have been able to support the following school departments/activities, who bid for donations from our funds:
Accelerated Reading Programme - £1000.
Performing arts TV - £500.
PE Department Drones - £300
£164.08 to Science Department for national grid demo equipment.
£200 dance costumes for the Summer Dance in July. This was to refresh the previous somewhat exhausted range of costumes available.
2016 Year 11 Prom, £101 for soft drinks.
£60 to the school Library for purchase of themed jigsaws to develop social relations and hand-eye coordination.
£200 contribution for Languages Department to enable them to book a French play to support European Languages Day in September.
Café Scientifique - £100 for refreshments for visiting scientist lecturers.
Students - please check your school email accounts EVERY DAY!
They are regularly used by teaching and admin staff to communicate important messages to you. Delete any out of date emails from your inbox and your deleted messages folders. If you have any problems, see your ICT teacher or an ICT technician.
Forthcoming events
1. Our AGM will be held in school on 27 September. In addition to the new Year 6 (Year 7 by then) parents we would love to have more volunteers to join the committee as members. We also will be taking nominations, voting and selecting replacement officer roles
including a new Chair, Vice chair and Treasurer.
I would personally like to thank every member of the committee, both parents and school
representatives for their dedicated commitment, drive, enthusiasm and support throughout the last two years in order to ensure we have had a very successful tenure by raising in the region of £7,000! for the school. The AGM will see the completion of my tenure-ship and wish every success to the new incumbent in continuing the fantastic work done by Friends to give those extra essentials to our children and the school. So come along, get involved and have a great night where you can get to know other parents who form Friends of WBS, as well as other new parents.
2. Our 100 Club (lottery) draws will continue. Have you joined yet? You have to be in it to win it!
3. We will hold a School Hallowe’en Disco on 20 October.
4. Viva La Coldplay tribute band will appear at school on 19 November.
And watch out for all Friends news via the school website or via Facebook.

Year 7 Trip - a report from Madame Crowther
At 06.00 on Wednesday 13 July, Mr Wilson, Mr Beard, Mrs Ellison and I all left school with 35 very excited Year 7 students for our annual 3 day visit to the Opal Coast in Northern France. We travelled by coach down to Dover and managed to catch the ferry as planned from Dover to Calais at midday, having had an easy bus journey down to the coast.
On arriving in France, we headed to L'Escargotière du Choquel, a snail farm run by Emmanuel Brasseur since 2001. There are 650,000 snails reared on the farm and the students were given a presentation in French about the rearing process to which they all listened attentively. Whilst Daniel Handley and Emily Dalton impressed everyone with the standard of their interpreting skills during the talk, Harry Gardner, after
learning that snail mucus is often used in face cream, decided to improve his skin quality by placing several snails all over his face. Needless to say, there were plenty of photo opportunities! During the visit, Harry proved in fact to be very fond of snails – he was also very keen on eating plenty of them during his evening meal as well. Not sure the feeling was reciprocated!
We arrived at our accommodation at the Château d’Ebblingheim near St Omer in time for our evening meal at 19.30. We had our very own dining area and prior to our meal, were greeted by our enthusiastic “groupie”, James, who welcomed the students and talked through the arrangements for our stay entirely in French. It was then time for a treasure hunt in French with the students having to run all around the park complex looking for the French clues. It certainly helped them to burn off a lot of energy!
On the Thursday, after spending some time doing a town trail around the town of St Omer, we spent the afternoon at the Bellewaerde theme park in Belgium. This is a well established amusement park in a natural setting with many rides and attractions including family favourites such as log flumes, rollercoasters and a 4D cinema and also over 300 exotic animals. Everyone had a wonderful time, especially Mr Beard who
enjoyed playing his new Pokemon Go app as he wandered around the park!
That evening (see photo below) students also had the opportunity to do some crèpe making with the instructions again delivered in French. Students were presented with all the ingredients and had to take turns to produce their batter in the required way, before cooking their pancakes on hotplates and getting to eat them after. Maddison Johnston proved to be a big fan, eating up any spare pancakes going at the end! It was then time for a game of football on the pitch outside the accommodation. Mr Wilson and Mr Beard did well keeping up with the young legs although Ben Sawyers proved more of a challenge to get the ball off for me.
On our last day (Friday 15 July), before heading home, we visited a local boulangerie where bread has been made to a traditional recipe for over 150 years. The talk by Bruno, the baker, was delivered entirely in French and the students all listened attentively and asked lots of good questions. Oliver Firmstone showed off his maths skills by working out the weight of the bread before it's cooked and Adam Thomas even got to put some croissants in the traditional wood-fired oven. The students were all then given a pain au chocolat before we headed back to the port and some also decided to purchase some fresh bread to take away with them. Lucky parents!
All in all, the visit was extremely successful. The students were a pleasure to take and benefitted in so many ways. This was our second visit to the Château in St Omer and also to the snail farm and Bellewaerde theme park and we will definitely look to include these again in our itinerary for 2017 which is
already booked for 12 – 14 July!
And, finally, here are a few of the comments made by our students about the visit:
I really enjoyed this trip because there were so many fun activities – Natalie Miles.
I really enjoyed the theme park in Belgium and I want to come back again – Oliver Markham.
I really liked the trip because it improved my French and I liked the food – Freya Jones.
I liked learning about the culture and learning a bit more language – Kirsty Antwi.

La visite à Cysoing
En octobre 2015, je suis allé à Cysoing. J’y suis allé avec d’autres personnes qui viennent de Much Wenlock parce que Much Wenlock est jumelée avec cette ville. Le voyage était assez long.
Sixth Form student Harry Entwistle visited Much Wenlock’s twin town, Cysoing, last year and we are delighted to finally bring you his report…

On Tuesday 21 June Mrs
Dowbiggin accompanied nine of
our Year 10 students on a visit to
the Telford Campus of
Wolverhampton University for a
day of challenging mathematical
workshops. This was a
‘More2Maths’ day of enrichment
and ideas designed to interest
and engage able Year 10
students.
Mrs Dowbiggin reports...
We turned Ben into a human see-
saw and balanced him only on two
5cm cubes at his centre of mass to
everyone’s amusement! (See the photo at the foot of this page.) Barnaby and Simon tried to
balance a coke can on its edge,
only succeeding when the centre of mass was aligned with
the rims of the can and it was half full. We learned how to
use flow charts practically, using the algorithm for playing
a game to demonstrate how algorithms are used in
everyday life for searching the web or personalising
recommendations.
We even deciphered messages from Mary Queen of Scots
plotting Queen Elizabeth’s murder! (See the box on the

We were introduced to experiments reflecting each of the
modules in A-level Maths, demonstrating the real-life
applications of this subject and benefits of studying A-
level Mathematics.
I was extremely proud of the behaviour of these students
and would not hesitate to repeat such a venture.

It’s been a very hectic time for the Maths Department this term, starting off with helping the Year 11 students prepare for their GCSE exams and the rest, as you can see below ,has not given us much time to wind down as the academic year comes to an end. We hope you all have a fantastic summer but do not forget to keep practising your numbers to have a good start in September!
Junior Maths Challenge Results Well done to all students who took part in the recent Maths Challenge and well done to the following who received an award.
Year 6 Induction - A murder in the Maths Department!!! During the Year 6 induction days, our new students
totally enjoyed cracking the case of a murder mystery by
solving Maths problems to discover who the guilty one
was! Mr Williams, aka Inspector Prime, together with Ms

School. There was a murder story that was made up with a number of suspects (about 20-30). Teachers acted as police
officers and spoke to the primary students about the murder. At the end of the lesson, some groups found the murderer as they worked it out from a number of mathematical clues. They all worked together and looked like they had good fun. I think this was a great activity as it got the students to work with people as a team and with some people they had only just met.”
Well done Year 6s and we look forward to welcoming
you back in September!
Puzzle Can you move four matchsticks to form three squares?
And finally….
We would like to welcome Mrs Hughes back from her maternity leave and hope that she has settled in well despite the extra challenge of having a little one nowadays.
We would also like to say farewell and thank you to Mr
Brocklehurst and Mrs Instan as they part from William
Brookes School at the end of this academic year. Many
students will be sad to hear the news of Mr Brocklehurt
leaving as he has been an outstanding teacher
throughout his time in the school. Mrs Instan has been
the Maths TA for nine years and we know that she will
be sorely missed by everyone in the Department as she
has served as a key player as well as being an amazing
teaching assistant in the lessons. I’m also leaving this
term; and as much as I will miss writing these termly
newsletters, I am rather excited with my new adventures
abroad. I’m sure I will continue to be in touch with
colleagues and look forward to hearing more good
news about the school.

‘Carnegie’ Shadowing Scheme The Carnegie medal (pictured left) is awarded every year by CILIP (The Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals). Every year, CILIP invites groups of young people to
‘shadow’ the awards process. This means reading the shortlisted books, meeting to discuss them and post reviews on the official website, and finally choosing our own winner. This year 22 students became ‘Carnegie Readers’; some have taken part in previous years, and some were new to the scheme. The group were:
Angel Beasley 10B1 Lily Lawson-Broadhead 9B6
Shanine Bowen 10B4 Grace Martin 9B3
Shannon Burgess 9B10 Lily Mason 9L10
Abi Cank 9S6 Olivia Owen-Jones 9B9
Sarah Cox 8B4 Lauren Perks 8B8
Shannon Cox 8L2 Eden Petty 8L4
Abigail Guerin 10L4 Megan Renshaw 10L8
Lily Hayward 10B8 Luke Stanley 8B1
Emily Hewlett 10L4 Katie Steele 8S4
Noah Higginson 8B1 Chelsea Whitfield 9A1
Maddie Johnston 7B9 Polly Wiseman 8L2
They all enjoyed the experience of reading books which might not have been their usual choice. This year’s 8 shortlisted books were:
Crossan, Sarah One
Hardinge, Frances The Lie Tree
Lake, Nick Their Will Be Lies
Ness, Patrick The Rest of Us Just Live Here
Saunders, Kate Five Children on the Western Front
Sedgwick, Marcus The Ghosts of Heaven
Talley, Robin Lies We Tell Ourselves
Valentine, Jenny Fire Colour One
Every year, we take part in ‘The Bashes’ Carnegie-themed book quiz with our fellow ‘shadowing’ group at Idsall School in Shifnal, alternating the venue between us. This year was Idsall’s turn to host the event and sadly, they proved to be the stronger team in a closely-fought competition. All our team of 10 students, captained by Lily Hayward, proved how much they knew about the shortlisted books and children’s books in general. I’d like to thank all our Carnegie readers for the time, effort and commitment they have put into reading the shortlists and taking part in ‘The Bashes’. Although we hope that ‘The Bashes’ will continue next year, this is by no means certain at present. So this may have been the last ever such event, after having competed against Idsall School for many years, with winning honours being fairly even distributed between us. After the quiz we enjoyed refreshments provided by Idsall school. CILIP announced on 20 June that this year’s winning book is ‘One’. No words are wasted in this poignant and thought-provoking novel. Written in free verse, each chapter is a poem and a work of art in its own right; collectively they create a highly emotive and engaging story centred on conjoined twins Grace and Tippi as they venture into the world after years of being home-schooled.
All the shortlisted titles are in our library stock, so come to our library and read them for yourself and see which book you would have chosen.
New books! See what new titles we have via the Library tab on the school portal! Nearly all our Fiction books are now labelled and shelved in their Accelerated Reader book level. Some non-fiction is also part of the AR scheme and those we have in stock are being identified and AR labelled, although the shelves will remain in Dewey classification order. AR is great for most people, but very irritating for the accomplished reader working their way through a series. Having taken on board anguished pleas from several students, I have now created a Rolling display of book series, 2/3 at a time. This is currently displaying Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy, the Chaos Walking books from Patrick Ness and the Tunnels series by Roderick Gordon and Brian Williams.
These books can be found below the joke books on the former ‘Horrible Histories’ shelves. To make room for them, the non-AR listed Horrible books and True Stories have been integrated in to the main non-fiction Dewey Decimal Classification scheme sequence.
Jigsaws
Thanks to the Friends of William Brookes School, we have been able to buy two new jigsaws from the popular ’Horrible Science’ collection - Loony Lab and Angry Animals. We are also grateful to have received some donated puzzles, as jigsaws are a very popular lunchtime activity!
Student Library Assistants Many thanks to the students who have helped out in the Library this term. Please come back and help library staff train new Assistants in September! Any students who have never been Library Assistants and who would like to try it are asked to come and see Mrs Herdson at the start of term. We’ll set up a breaks and lunchtime rota system for suitable candidates.

Brad Jones and Cameron Mackie were invited to present at the LGBT festival at Shrewsbury University in February. This is a national festival that has toured major cities in the UK.
The guest speakers were Peter Tatchell, a famous gay rights activist who has worked with the government to create changes in law in the UK for all LGBT people, and Stuart Milk, whose uncle was Harvey Milk who campaigned in the USA for gay rights and was shot whilst campaigning. There were representatives from West Mercia Police, the LGBT organisation 'School's Out' and
many more national organisations.
The reaction to our students’ presentation was overwhelming. Ovations, tears and genuine respect for the work they have done and the awareness that they are raising. The consensus was that we will be hearing a lot more about these two young people in the future!
And we send many congratulations to Brad for becoming joint winner in ’The Day’ newspaper’s national writing competition! See the facing page for more details.

Summer Dance 2016
Our annual dance production was held over the two evenings of 6/7 July. High energy performances were put on by no less than 140 students from William Brookes School and the Encore Programme. The show was packed, with exciting lights and effects and the audience responded well. The last six months of rehearsals and hard work paid off in this sell-out event and a huge thank you must go to all the students who performed, the parents and carers who supported and all the staff who, each year make this event successful. We wish all the dancers who are leaving us this year our very best and will welcome those returning in September to their new clubs and groups!

William Brookes students and the ‘Poet with Punch’
During the spring term, Matt Windle, former Birmingham Young Poet Laureate and professional boxer, visited the school to work with Year 7 and 9 students, supported by myself and Niimi Day-Gough. Following these inspirational workshops, Matt, along with some of these students, performed in an open mic night at the Wenlock Poetry Festival. The evening of music and poetry was a great success, enjoyed by students and audience alike.
A report from Antonia Shaw (Year 12)
Matt is a past winner of the Wenlock Poetry Slam and mentor to the first Shropshire Young Poet Laureate, former William Brookes student Mia Cunningham.

This year the girls in the PE department merged with Ludlow Hockey Club to compete as 'Ludlow and Much Wenlock 2nds' and I couldn't have been more proud to be a part of it!
We fielded around 40 girls in total over the season and they progressed from game to game, winning some games over the season against teams of ladies, more than we could have expected!
At the end of season awards Jess Griffiths, Year 9, was awarded with the Under 16s Player of the Season for the whole of Ludlow Hockey Club, a huge achievement!
I would like to say a big thank you to all of the girls that have supported this venture this year, I thoroughly enjoyed playing alongside you on Saturdays!

Year 12 Law students enjoyed a very interesting and stimulating visit to Wolverhampton Combined Courts on Wednesday 13 July.
Throughout the visit, students were able to observe the Criminal Justice System in action across a broad range of cases, including juvenile rape; marital rape, intimidation and assault, theft, ABH and immigration issues.
They also experienced the process of a jury being sworn in; a witness in the intimidation case giving evidence from behind a screen and the alleged rape victim giving evidence to the court via video link.
Students found the experience extremely interesting and thought provoking, so much so, they are now keen for me to arrange another visit!

Science Section 1 The Engineering Education Scheme - a report from Mr Weston
The Engineering Education Scheme is an EDT Programme which links teams of four Year 12 students and their teacher with local companies to work on real, scientific, engineering and technological problems. The scheme provides students with an in-depth experience in science, engineering and technology that will enable them to make an informed decision about their future studies and career.
This will be achieved by giving the students, in a six month programme: Hands-on work experience as part of a team. Experience of problem solving, working on a project that is
relevant to a local company. Use of a university’s engineering workshops to develop,
build and test solutions to the problem. Professional skills lectures on Communications (written,
verbal and visual) and Project Management. The opportunity to develop technical skills and see school
physics, chemistry, technology etc applied in an industrial environment.
An opportunity to meet professional and graduate engineers, scientists and technologists.
Experience in presenting their solution, in a formal verbal presentation and formal written technical report, to a panel of senior professional engineers.
During their six-month project phase, students are encouraged to show industrial enterprise, creativity and innovation whilst gaining extensive experience of problem-solving, team-working and project management. All key life skills are developed within the context of the world of work. Personal development education realised through work related learning is at the core of this high quality educational enrichment scheme.
This year, our two teams comprised Isaac James, Josh Crehan, Robbie Cooper, Harry Dowdeswell, Tom Grant, Harry Entwistle, Adam Goodman and Josh Sterling, pictured above with Mr Weston when they attended the EES Celebration and Assessment Day at Cranmore Park, Solihull on 28 April.
For more details of the scheme, go to http://www.etrust.org.uk/engineering-education-scheme
Harry Entwistle gives us a student’s perspective on the Engineering Education Scheme...
At William Brookes there were two teams with two companies:
Josh Sterling, Adam Goodman, Harry Entwistle and Tom Grant with GKN; and Isaac James, Robbie Cooper, Harry Dowdeswell and Josh Crehan with Stadco.

Summer Holiday Edition 2016 Page 25
The project with GKN was to develop a stand that would be able to support one of the flywheels that are being installed into buses.
GKN is a global engineering group. Every day they drive the wheels of hundreds of millions of cars, help thousands of aircraft to fly, deliver the power to move earth and harvest crops; and make essential components for industries that touch lives across the globe. The purpose of the flywheel is to harness the energy from braking so that it can then be used for acceleration to reduce carbon emissions. There were a few things to consider when designing this, like the strength needed to hold up the flywheel as it weighs about 50kg. Also, the shape of the stand would make a difference to the structural strength. There were also several other things to consider. What the team went with was a simple steel stand with an aluminium top with clamps as this was the most practical solution to the problem.
(Continued from page 24) The project with Stadco was to find a way of
stopping metal parts going to the customer with missing nuts and bolts. Stadco Automotive Ltd is an international Tier 1 supplier of automotive Body-in-White products and services. Core capabilities are aluminium and steel stampings, assemblies and facility design. When considering how to tackle this problem the two main solutions that came up were weighing the part to see if it was the weight it should be but also use sensors to detect if the nuts or bolts are missing. What the team went with was steel sensors built into a stand as this was the simplest and most effective way to feedback to an operator whether the part was complete or not.
Both the teams, once they had completed the project, had to present their solutions at an event near Birmingham where there were over 80 other teams from the West Midlands. We had to set up a stand with what we had done that would be judged. We also had to deliver a
presentation to a panel of 4 or 5 judges.
Both teams did well with their stand and presentation with comments from the judges such as: ‘An excellent presentation’; ‘Everyone should be proud’ and ‘The project outcome was a success!’

In March our Year 12 chemists went to Birmingham Town Hall to hear a number of chemists speak about their interest in Chemistry.
Prof Andrea Sella, Professor of Chemistry at University College London, spoke about the rare earth elements – he brought them along to show us some of the things they get up to! He was an excellent speaker, explaining how he got interested in studying chemistry and where his studies have taken him.
Dr Peter Wothers is a teaching fellow at the Department of Chemistry, University of Cambridge. In 2012 he gave the Royal Institution’s famous Christmas Lectures and is involved extensively in writing and outreach projects for young people interested in Chemistry.
He gave a wonderful talk on the phenomenon of when matter meets electromagnetic radiation – there were some fabulous demonstrations in this talk!

And some (bad) Chemistry jokes…..
Q: What is the show cesium and iodine love watching together? A: CSI
Q: Did you hear oxygen went on a date with potassium? A: It went OK.
Q: What did the scientist say when he found 2 isotopes of helium? A: HeHe

Café Sci has not only been a chance to feast on immense amounts of free cake this term, but it has also brought us a great opportunity to hear from some exceptional speakers on some relevant and inspiring topics in many fields. First of all, we had former William Brookes student Dr Peter Millington from the University of Nottingham speaking about the topic of relativity. His talk included the recent ground-breaking discovery of gravitational waves and an insight into
the subatomic particles that make up everything that we know.
Secondly was Professor Brian J Smith from Oxford University speaking about the mind-boggling field of quantum information. Finally, we had Professor Divya Chari from Keele University with an innovative talk on the up and coming research surrounding neural tissue engineering.
The events came together brilliantly due to the fantastic people who came to see the talks, and we hope more talks can be held in the future.
We also want to thank Dr Morgan and Dr Hearle for being there to support us in the running of the events; without them none of it would be possible.
From the relentless emails, cake baking and poster creation to the last minute setting up,
Café Sci has been a pleasure and we hope a great new team takes it upon themselves after us.
Many Thanks, the Café Sci Team:
Adam Goodman, Helena Godfrey, Isaac James, Tom Grant, Harry Dowdeswell, Sam Kaiser, William Chamberlain, Fraser Walker, Jake Carter.
And thank you to Dr Morgan for these photos. Year 13 Chemists are pictured extracting aspirin from willow bark. The samples have been sent off to a commercial lab for hplc (high pressure liquid chromatography)
analysis - to find out how pure the aspirin is.

Sixth Form induction week
Now that their GCSEs are over and done with, many of our Year 11 students came into school during the week of 4-8 July transformed into Year 12 students!
Their Sixth Form induction week gave them a taste for what life will be like for them in the Sixth Form. The students enjoyed wearing their own clothes, rather than school uniform, trying out the more relaxed ambience of Simmill’s café rather than the busy Restaurant 1850, getting to know the current Sixth Form students and last but not least sampling some AS lessons.
Here, Lara Barlow and Bethany Williams are pictured having fun on an inflatable during the ‘Activities’ session.

Swimming Our strength in the pool continues to develop on all levels. Students have the opportunity to swim weekly in the pool regardless of
their ability. An improvers club for our less experienced swimmers is held twice a week; Wednesday evenings (15:45-17:00) and Wednesday lunchtimes (13:10-13:40). For those at intermediate level, Wednesday evenings in the deep end/over lengths and for our elite swimmers Friday evenings (15:50-17:00).
In the Telford Schools Championships we were 2nd overall and in the South Shropshire Schools 1st! Eleven of our elite swimmers competed in the County Schools Swimming Championships on 11 May; this is the largest team that we have ever taken to this event. The following excellent results were achieved:
Olivia Allen: 13th in the Junior girls 100m Backstroke in a new PB.
Jess Heath: 14th in the Junior girls 100m Backstroke, taking 2.5 seconds of her PB. 15th in the Junior girls Individual Medley.

Elle Humphries: 2nd in the Junior girls 100m Butterfly and 1st in the Junior girls 100m Freestyle, swimming very close to her PBs in both events.
Louise Edmunds: 1st in the Junior girls 100m Breast-stroke, missing the County record by one hundredth of a second!! 1st in the Junior girls Individual Medley in a new PB.
Natasha McGowan: 3rd in the Intermediate girls 100m Backstroke. 3rd in the Intermediate girls 100m Freestyle, knocking 2 seconds off her former PB.
Henry Willis: 3rd in the Intermediate boys 100m Breast-stroke. 3rd in the Intermediate boys 100m Freestyle, knocking 2 seconds off his former PB.
Both Henry and Natasha have another year in this age group.
Jack Manning: 2nd in the Intermediate boys 100m Breast-stroke, knocking 2 seconds off his PB.
Jenna Edmunds: 2nd in the Senior girls 100m Breast-stroke, equalling her PB.
Special mention must go to Louise Edmunds, awarded female swimmer of the competition, for her excellent swims.
Louise Edmunds, Elle Humphries, Jenna Edmunds, Henry Willis and Jack Manning all competed at the Midland Championships this term. Jenna won 2 silver medals in the 50m and 100m Breast-stroke and Louise, Elle, Henry and Jack were all finalists. Louise competed in the Scottish National Championships in the Easter Holidays, winning 2 silver medals in the 50m and 100m Breast-stroke. Louise has been invited to swim in the British Championships in 50m Breast-stroke in July, and both sisters, Jenna (50m Breast-stroke) and Louise (100m Breast-stroke) have been invited to the English Championships at the beginning of August.
Athletics We have enjoyed a very busy and successful
athletics season. Being part of the Telford Schools Competition on a weekly basis has enabled us to perform against a wide range of competitors and has significantly added to our number of fixtures.
The Telford Schools League Results:
Year 7
Girls= 3rd Boys= 9th Combined score= 4th
Year 8
Girls= 2nd Boys= 3rd Combined score= 3rd
Year 9
Girls= 3rd Boys= 6th Combined score= 5th
Year 10/11
Girls= 5th Boys=3rd Combined score= 3rd
At the start of the season in May our athletes competed in the first round of the English Schools Track & Field Competition. This is always a challenging competition, where you have a set number of athletes who have to compete in both a track and field event. However our athletes rose to the challenge, achieving a good set of results against the top Shropshire Schools. The Junior girls were 4th out of 7 teams and the Junior boys were 3rd out of 5 teams. At the beginning of June we entered the County Cup, again this is a challenging competition against the top Shropshire Schools. Three out of our four teams performed very well to secure a place in the final a week later. The Year 7/8 girls achieved 6th place, the Year 9/10 girls and Junior boys both achieved 5th place.
The Telford Schools Championships, which we usually win (we have been Champions for four consecutive years to date!) had to be postponed due to torrential rain. They were held on Wednesday 13th July. William Brookes achieved 2nd place overall! A particular well done must go to the Years 7, 8 & 10 girls teams who all won their competitions, a fantastic performance.
In the Shropshire County Championships the following results were achieved:
Year 10
Ethan Damerun: 8th in Shot, 6th in Discus
Ethan Steele: 4th in Shot, 6th in Discus
Thea Perkins-Green: 4th in 800m, 4th in High Jump

The Junior girls team of Polly Wiseman, Hester Whittaker and Ellie Warner (pictured above) achieved 1st place in the Shropshire Combined Event Championships; they all have another year in this age group.
Toby Jones (photo left) has enjoyed a tremendous Athletics season. He qualified for the first time for the English Schools Track and Field Championships in Gateshead, in the Junior boys discus. This is a wonderful opportunity to represent Shropshire against the best young athletes in England. Toby achieved 7th place with
a new Personal Best.
Biathlon We reported in our Spring edition that Elle Humphries had achieved a tremendous 4th position in the British Schools Championships in March. In May, she competed in a National Biathle (run-swim-run) Competition, again achieving 4th position, which was enough to qualify for the British team!! Our second William Brookes student to represent Great Britain at Biathle (Matthew Griffiths Year 13 was the first), Elle flew to Portugal on 13 July to compete in her first International Competition. To say we are very proud of her would be an understatement!!
The 2016/2017 Biathlon season begins with the qualifying competition on 19 October, which we will be hosting at William Brookes. Training will start as soon as we return in September.
Interhouse Interhouse is a fantastic opportunity for all students to represent their House, enabling students to experience competitive sport and team spirit. Our older students (especially Years 9 and 10) contribute to the success of these events, officiating and organising. These skills will benefit them not only in school life but also in life generally. The Interhouse swimming results are given below.
Unfortunately, the Interhouse rounders and cricket competitions did not finish until after we went to press.
Luca Basini-Gazzi 10B9 has been selected to represent Shropshire at a National Talent Inspiration Programme to be held at Loughborough University in August! During a 3-day residential visit, Luca and other young County and Regional level sports men and women from across the country will meet experienced Athlete Mentors who will show them how to reach their full potential. This is a fantastic opportunity for Luca and we wish him every success in his venture.

Summer 1
Summer 1 is SATs time for Year 6 and so the focus moves to lower KS2 and KS1. We started the term with:
Year 3/4 ORIENTEERING FESTIVAL on 21 April
Fifty-three primary children came to WBS to take part in four different Orienteering challenges. Six primary schools took part and the festival was organised by twenty-one WBS Leaders who had spent three weeks planning the challenges, preparing the routes and making
resources. The weather was kind and the children completed all four challenges before being presented with certificates for participating. The Leaders also nominated children from each challenge (massive maps, little loops, netball numbers and animal star relay) to receive special certificates for demonstrating the Olympic and Paralympic values of Excellence, Determination, Inspiration, Friendship and Respect, as well as outstanding map reading.
KS1 X-COUNTRY at BROCKTON on 6 May
SGCo Ann Smith and PE Apprentice Beth Millward arrived to stake out the course in the morning and to train the Year 5/6 leaders in the different roles involved in organising X-Country events. The leaders had to take on roles of Hares, Warm up Marshalls, Course Marshalls, Support Marshalls, Finish Marshalls and Certificate writers. The course, which follows a narrow path up the steep hill behind the school, was very challenging but all the ninety Reception and KS1 children taking part from Church Preen, Cressage and Brockton Schools completed the course and received participation certificates. The top three children in each race were presented with ‘place’ certificates by the Brockton leaders to great applause from the other children and staff attending. The event was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone and the effort and enjoyment shown by the participants was a delight to see.
BRONZE AMBASSADORS – INTRA EVENTS
It has been another busy half term as Year 6 BAs have been completing the Kurling , Boccia and Tri Golf events in their schools and helping head teachers select the Year 3/4 children for the Olympic/Paralympic
festival in May. Cressage BAs Amelie, Izzy, Connor and Alex held their final Tri golf competition on 28 April. The following day Buildwas held their Boccia competition and completed their Tri Golf a week later. Mrs Smith was pleased with Buildwas BAs Sam and Brooke who helped new leaders Shannon and Jack plan a different type of
competition for the Tri Golf.
On 6 May, Much Wenlock BAs Ben, Caleb, Rosie and Sammy held their final Year 3/4
competition which was also Tri golf. Following the success of their intra events they decided to organise a X-Country event for their Reception and KS1 classes to select teams for the new inter X-Country to be held at Barrow on 25 May. They
recruited some of their Year 6 classmates to take on the different roles involved in X-Country and marked out the course during lunchtime. SSCO Ann Smith went along in the afternoon to observe and was very impressed by the planning that had gone on beforehand. The afternoon was a success and after all the equipment was cleared away the leaders sat with Mrs Smith to evaluate what went well and what could be improved.
Year 3/4 OLYMPIC/PARALYMPIC FESTIVAL on 20 May
One hundred and forty Year 3/4 children from Much Wenlock, Cressage, Church Preen, Broseley, Brockton and Buildwas Schools came to William Brookes on 20 May to take part in the Olympic/Paralympic festival. The children had been taking part in intra events organised by their Bronze Ambassadors and were then selected to represent their school in the festival. They competed in Boccia, Kurling or Tri golf and when all the team results were added together, Broseley came out as the overall festival winners.
Twenty-four WBS leaders organised the festival and were assisted on the day by the Bronze Ambassadors from Much Wenlock, Cressage, Church Preen and Brockton. All participants received participation certificates as well as the first place teams in each sport. Other children were nominated by the leaders for special certificates if they demonstrated the paralympic values of Determination, Inspiration, Equality and Sportsmanship.
KS1 X-COUNTRY AT BARROW on 25 May
Following the success of the KS1 X-Country at Brockton, it was decided
to organise another KS1 event to involve the children from Barrow, Broseley, Much Wenlock and Buildwas. Year 6 leaders from Much Wenlock and Broseley were collected by SGCo Ann Smith and PE Apprentice Beth Millward and taken to Barrow in the morning to stake out the course and be trained in the various roles involved in organising a X-Country event. The KS1 children arrived after lunch, excited to take part in their first inter school competition.
There were 6 separate races for Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 boys and girls with the top three in each race awarded place certificates. All runners completing the course also received participation certificates from the Year 6 leaders.

Congratulations to all the children who took part and to the leaders who helped to organise the event.
SCHOOLS INTO WILLIAM BROOKES
Summer 1 has seen John Wilkinson School attending on Tuesday afternoons, with Year 4 doing short tennis and Year 5 doing badminton with Ann Smith and swimming with swim teacher Becky Hawthorn. The children have worked really well and Mrs Smith was extremely pleased with the progress made by both classes. It has also been pleasing to see a number of John Wilkinson and Much Wenlock children now regularly attending the evening badminton session run by SGCo Ann Smith and PE apprentice Beth Millward on Tuesdays from 17.00 – 18.00.
On Thursdays mornings Much Wenlock School’s Year 3 and Year 5 pupils have been coming to WBS for swimming and athletics. By the end of the block both classes had learned a ‘pyramid’ warm up and were also able to do a 2 minute stamina run without stopping. They also developed their throwing technique and completed their own standing long jump competitions where they had to take turns to act as judges and take accurate measurements using tape measures. They even had the chance to work on their sprinting on the track to help select the runners for primary sports day.
Summer 2
Summer 2 started with a return of Year 6 to competitions following the completion of SATS in May.
COUND KWIK CRICKET on 8 June
Eight teams from seven of our partner primary schools took part in a Kwik Cricket tournament at Cound cricket club. SGCO Ann Smith organised the tournament with Cound CC kindly providing the venue and all the officials. The weather was good, the setting was beautiful and the Cound umpires were so enthusiastic they ensured every child had great time. They also gave coaching advice to individuals throughout the day and helped the children and school staff understand the rules and scoring systems used in Kwik cricket. Broseley A went home with the trophy with Much Wenlock second and Brockton narrowly beating Barrow for third place. All 70 children took home a participation certificate along with lots of tips on how to improve their batting, bowling and fielding.
BRONZE AMBASSADOR – MENTOR TRAINING on 13 June
Thirty-two Year 5 children attended the first Bronze Ambassador Mentor training workshop at WBS with East
Shropshire SGO Chris Jew and SGCo Ann Smith. Each primary school had chosen four children who will be Bronze Ambassadors next year and the aim of the workshop was to develop the skills, confidence and knowledge that would enable them to help, encourage and involve children from their school who don’t usually take part in sport. Next year the Bronze Ambassadors will attend further training to learn how to plan and organise competitions for the children in their schools.
ESSP CHANGE4LIFE/SPORTABILITY FESTIVAL on 14 June
Ten teams from Much Wenlock, John Wilkinson, Claverley, Worfield and Morville Schools came to William Brookes to take part in a C4L/Sportability festival for Years 3/4. The festival was aimed at encouraging those children who don’t usually take part in after school sport or may not have had the opportunity to represent their school in a sporting environment. The sixty children rotated around eight different activities where they had coaching from WBS Sports Leaders and then competed as a team to score as many points as possible in a set time. The eighteen KS3 leaders involved had spent two weeks preparing the activities with SGCO Ann Smith and deciding on their roles, either as activity leaders or team managers. The time was well spent as despite having to adapt to bad weather and move everything into the Sports Hall, the event ran like clockwork with a number of visiting staff commenting on how well the leaders explained the activity and how much they encouraged the children. All teams received participation certificates and SGO Chris Jew announced the top three teams who won gold, silver and bronze medals.
YEAR 6 ATHLETICS TRAINING AFTERNOON on 20 June
Prior to the William Brookes Partner Primary Sports Day, all Year 6 students (and Year 4/5 from the smaller schools) come to WBS for an afternoon to meet the PE staff and receive coaching in the more technical athletics events. Unfortunately the poor summer weather meant that everything had to move indoors but the 130 children present were still able to practice three events from shot, discus, javelin, long jump, hurdles and high jump ready for the main event the following week.
PARTNER PRIMARY SPORTS DAY on 27 June
The big day started with a mass warm up followed by an ‘Olympic’ parade around the track by all eight schools. With over 400 competitors from Year 2 to Year 6 taking part, the event is the largest that our WBS Sports Leaders are involved in. The 42 leaders from Years 7,8 and 9 were officiating field events or were supporting the PE staff on the track. Presentations took place throughout the morning to the top

three children in each event and overall scores were so close that the final results were
checked three times to ensure they were correct. Church Preen won the small schools event, narrowly beating Barrow, and in the large schools event Much Wenlock and John Wilkinson both scored 262 points and will have to share the trophy, each keeping it for 6 months. The morning finished with a closing parade and we were all grateful that the weather had held out and the morning had been enjoyed by parents and competitors.
(Continued from page 31) WENLOCK OLYMPIAN GAMES KWIK CRICKET on 6 July
This is a great opportunity for our primary children to be involved in an historic event and this year was the 130th Wenlock Olympian Games. The Kwik Cricket was organised by Joanne Brown from Much Wenlock Cricket club; she also provided the umpires who included three Year 9 Leaders from WBS who all play for the club. Eight teams took part in the tournament which involved six of our feeder primary schools plus a visiting team from Church Stretton. Broseley A won the

final against the Church Stretton visitors, having lost to them in the early rounds. Church Preen beat Barrow with the last ball of the day when Jake Luft hit a winning six to ensure his team took home Bronze medals. All the teams took home a T-shirt and certificate to commemorate the day and special mention to Brockton who had to send a team of Year 3/4s. They didn’t manage to win a game but with encouragement from their opponents and coaching tips from the officials they were most definitely the most improved and enthusiastic team of the day.
SCHOOLS INTO WILLIAM BROOKES
Summer 2 has seen Church Preen School in on Tuesdays and Cressage in on Thursdays for swimming and PE. Both schools started with athletics to prepare children for the Partner Primary Sports Day at the end of June. Following sports day the Year 5/6 children from both schools moved on to Throwminton and Badminton and the younger classes have been doing multi skills looking at sending and receiving in simple net games.
THE 130TH WENLOCK OLYMPIAN GAMES - JULY 2016
It is always a pleasure to see so many local children involved in this fantastic annual event and it was good to see five girls from Brockton primary taking part in the U11 High 5 netball competition on 9 July. The girls were representing Wenlock Lightning Netball club and managed to come second and win impressive silver medals. The club trains on Friday evenings from 16.00 - 17.00 at William Brookes with coaches Jill Loveday and Ann Smith and any children in Year 5/6 are welcome to come along when training resumes on 9 September.
In the U14 Netball tournament, fourteen William Brookes girls also representing Wenlock Lightning NC won silver and bronze medals, despite the terrible rain all morning. Well done girls.
In the U18 Volleyball competition on 8 July, 12 teams took part with Kings School from Wolverhampton winning both the boys and girls competitions. William Brookes girls won silver and our boys won bronze, Congratulations to both teams.
In the Badminton competition held on 9 July, success for WBS came when Ben Dixon in Year 11 won gold in the U16 boys singles, with Kieron Walker Year 11 taking silver. Ben also won gold in the boys doubles with his partner Fred Ross from Year 10. Calum Bolton and Archie Orme won bronze in the

School Sport Achievement Evening 2015-16 A review of your progress and achievements from Mr Hennessy
Our Sports Award evening took place on 8 July, with footballer Kenny Swain as our guest speaker. He has played for Aston Villa, Chelsea and Portsmouth and won the European Cup with Aston Villa.
Interhouse Review This year has seen 10 Interhouse sport competitions organised by Mrs Humphreys and the PE team. All students have represented their houses in a positive way to earn points towards the House sports cup. Interhouse sport requires our students to demonstrate teamwork within their House and commitment towards taking part and running these competitions. 120 different Student Leaders have been used to support our fantastic Interhouse programme. Thank you to all leaders, without you these opportunities would not happen!
This Girl Can day In December we held a ‘This Girl Can’ day to encourage our KS4 girls to try something new. They had a go at archery, taught by the Paralympian Mel Clarke, cheerleading, cricket, Judo and fitness. The girls were allowed to wear their own choice of clothes for being active and arrived with a really positive attitude to the event! Year 10 girls were also invited to a presentation from Mel, where they found out about her incredible story and rise to Paralympic Bronze and Silver medallist.
Sport Relief A brilliant week saw staff vs students’ fixtures in netball, football, hockey and basketball. Students raised money by supporting bake sales, gaining sponsorship for the sport relief run and paying to have fun on inflatable challenges. A brilliant effort which saw us raise £2,750!!!
Sport Leadership A team of 200 different Leaders from William Brookes School, from Years 7-13, have been involved in giving thousands of children from all over Shropshire the opportunity to take part in sport. Our leaders have been involved in leading 20 primary school sporting competitions and festivals!
Swimming Our junior girls became Telford Champions and our inter boys South Shropshire Champions. At the South Shropshire Schools we also came away with the overall championship title. On 11 May we took our biggest team to the County Schools Championships, 11 students from Years 7-11 represented William Brookes. Individual successes in the pool have come from many, but the standout performers have been Louise Edmunds, Elle Humphries, Henry Willis, Jenna Edmunds and Jack Manning.
Cross Country In the South Shropshire Championships, we won the Year 8/9 girls and the Year 10/11 boys. In the Telford Schools League we finished 2nd in the Team Championship. After fantastic runs in the Telford Schools League and the South Shropshire Championships, 6 students were selected to represent Shropshire.
Sportshall Athletics: Our Year 8 girls and boys teams were victorious at the East Shropshire championships. At the County Finals the girls achieved 2nd position, but the boys became County Champions!!
Outdoor Athletics 3 out of 4 teams qualified for the County Finals which saw the best 8 schools compete. Our U14 boys finished 4th, U16 girls team finished 5th. Toby Jones has been our standout athlete this year; at the County Athletic Championships he became County Champion in shot, discus and hurdles, he was 2nd in the Combined Events Championships at Regional Finals and has qualified for the English Schools Athletic Championships.
Trampolining This year saw a huge number of students attending trampolining club; we took 9 students to compete in the Telford Schools competition. The students performed really well, at the biggest Telford Competition we’ve seen in years,

and we arrived home with a Novice Team Silver, Individual Elite Girls Bronze (Amelia Fawcett) and Elite Boys Silver (Oliver Wells).
Netball Year 7 have got real quality in their team and have been successful throughout the season. They were runners-up in the South Shropshire Tournament. At the County Plate they were unbeaten in the rounds, and they went on to beat Ludlow comfortably in the final. Year 8 have been fantastic all season! They won the partnership competition and went forward to represent East Shropshire at the County games. They were runners-up in the South Shropshire Tournament and semi-finalists in the County Plate, narrowly losing to the eventual winners. Year 9s had a great start to the season, being runners-up in the County Plate tournament for the first time and winning the South Shropshire competition.
Basketball The U12 team managed to go the whole season unbeaten and are the current County Champions. The U13 also became County Champions when they won at the Shropshire school games finals. The U14 team had an outstanding season, winning the County Championship and reaching the National quarter finals, narrowly losing to the eventual Finalists Northampton School for Boys. The U15 team reached the last 16 in England, with Ethan Damerun being our most valuable player.
Hockey This academic year has been a brilliant year for hockey at William Brookes. 185 students have attended hockey club and represented the school in District, County, Regional and National competitions. Students are improving their standards of play by joining local clubs and competing more regularly. This year has seen a record number of players get into County and Regional hockey squads. 24 students have represented Shropshire with 11 being selected for junior regional performance centres. All this has contributed to our most successful season. U12, U13, U15 & U16 Boys teams have all won County
(Continued from page 34)
Championships and attended regional competitions. U12, U13, U14 & U16 boys and girls have won district competitions at either the Telford and or South Shropshire schools partnerships.
Football Year 7 - The boys finished the season on a huge positive, beating Madeley on penalties in a thrilling match in the final of the District Plate. Year 8 - A really productive year; the team won the South Shropshire cup. Kaiya Ata, Ethan Pickford and Kian Garbett all progressed through to the under 14 County Squad. Year 9 - A difficult start to the year but the team showed a lot of courage and determination to reach the Final of the South Shropshire Cup, narrowly losing to Idsall School. Year 11 - This year they reached the Final of the Telford Plate where they were beaten by a strong Madeley side.
Cricket Cricket is booming at William Brookes school this year; we have 10 teams that have taken part in soft and hardball at District, County and Regional competitions. The U12 boys missed out of the school games and County Finals, losing to Bridgnorth in two very close matches. The U13 & U15 boys finished 2nd in the Shropshire’s Chance to Compete Finals and missed out on going through to the Regional Finals.
Barcelona 80 students and 10 staff represented William Brookes School during half term in Barcelona. We had 7 sporting teams representing us in basketball, hockey, football and netball. During the week there were many successes, but the highlights had to be our double winning football teams, who won their age group tournaments against 19 UK schools. Our netball teams also did brilliantly, finishing 2nd & 4th in their UK school tournament. The tour was a huge success that saw students develop their sporting skills and become more independent during their time in Spain.
Look out for our next sports tour in 2018!!!
Thank you to all staff, parents and students for your commitment and hard work this year.
Let’s see if we can make 2016-17 as successful!
