Dear Parishioners and Friends of Ascension, Happy Labor Day! Labor Day is celebrated in our country as a national holiday. On Labor Day we celebrate the economic and social contributions of all workers. It has been a federal holiday since declared by President Grover Cleveland in 1894. While we in the United States always celebrate Labor Day on the first Monday of September, many countries celebrate Labor Day in May. The Feast of St. Joseph the Worker (May 1) was established by Pope Pius XII in 1955 in order to try to ‘christianize’ the concept of labor and give to all workers a model and a protector as seen in the person of St. Joseph. By the daily labor in his workshop, offered to God with patience and joy, St. Joseph provided for the necessities of Mary and Jesus, and thus became an example to all laborers. May Day has long been dedicated to labor and the worker. Pope Leo XIII was the first pope to officially speak about the importance of labor and work. In his famous encyclical Rerum Novarum, Pope Leo spoke about the conditions of the working class. In Rerum Novarum he also supported the rights of labor to form unions, rejected communism and unrestricted capitalism, while affirming the right to private property. When Pope Leo first wrote this encyclical, it was considered to be most controversial, but it in fact is now considered to be the foundation of modern Catholic Social teaching. As we begin a new ‘year’ here at Ascension, we recognize the contribution of the many who toil on a daily basis in the workplace, and in their spare time, ‘labor’ for Ascension Parish and for those who are in need. Each year, at the beginning of September, we invite and encourage parishioners to consider becoming involved in some kind of parish ministry for the upcoming year. Next weekend, there will be a handout in the bulletin (handouts will also be available in the back of the church and in the rectory) with a list of many of the ministries that take place here at Ascension. (This list is not exhaustive.) We do this in the month of September since most are back from vacation and many new people, including college students, are finding Ascension. We wish to give an opportunity to all those who wish to serve in some way. Last year we received a very positive response. We hope that will be the case again this year. One of the reasons that being involved in parish ministry (volunteering) is so important is because it is a very beautiful way of giving back to God. Involvement in parish ministries is a way of thanking God for our blessings, our jobs, and our financial resources. We thank God not by simply sharing our treasure; we thank him by sharing our time and talent as well. We’d love to have you share your time and talent with our community. Please know that these forms are also available on our parish website as well. If you go to our parish website, there is a tab at the top of the homepage for Ministries and Parish Groups. Queridos Feligreses y Amigos de la Ascensión,

¡Feliz Día del Trabajo! El Día del Trabajo en nuestro país es celebrado como un día nacional feriado. En el Día del Trabajo celebramos la contribución económica y social de todos los trabajadores. Ha sido un día feriado nacional desde que fue declarado por el presidente Grover Cleveland en el 1894.

Mientras que nosotros en los Estados Unidos siempre celebramos el Día del Trabajo el primer lunes de septiembre, muchos países celebran el Día del Trabajo en mayo. La fiesta de San José el Trabajador (1ro de mayo) fue establecida por el Papa Pío XII en el 1955 para tratar de cristianizar el concepto del trabajo y dar a todos los trabajadores un modelo y protector como visto en la persona de San José. Con su trabajo diario en su taller, ofrecido a Dios con paciencia y amor, San José proveía para las necesidades de María y Jesús, y así se convirtió en un ejemplo de todos los trabajadores. El Día del Trabajo en mayo, desde hace tiempo, ha sido dedicado al trabajo y al trabajador.

El Papa León XIII fue el primer papa que habló oficialmente acerca de la importancia de la labor y el trabajado. En la famosa encíclica, Rerum Novarum, el Papa León habló sobre las condiciones de la clase trabajadora. En Rerum Novarum, él también apoyó los derechos de trabajadores para formar uniones, rechazó el consumismo y el capitalismo sin restricciones, mientras afirmaba el derecho a propiedad privada. Cuando primeramente el Papa León escribió esta encíclica, se consideraba muy controversial, pero ahora, de hecho, está considerada como la base de la enseñanza católica social moderna.

Mientras comenzamos un “año nuevo” aquí en la Ascensión, reconocemos la contribución de tantos que trabajan diariamente en los lugares de trabajo y en su tiempo libre “trabajan” para la Parroquia de la Ascensión y para aquellos en necesidad.

Cada año, a principios de septiembre, invitamos y alentamos a feligreses a que consideren involucrarse en alguna clase de ministerio parroquial para el próximo año. El próximo fin de semana, habrá un volante en el boletín (en la parte de atrás de la iglesia y en la rectoría habrá volantes disponibles) con una lista de los muchos ministerios que toman lugar aquí en la Ascensión. (Esta lista no es exhaustiva). Hacemos esto en el mes de septiembre, ya que la mayoría han regresado de las vacaciones y mucha gente nueva, incluyendo estudiantes universitarios, están descubriendo a la Ascensión. Deseamos darle una oportunidad a todos aquellos que desean servir de alguna manera. El año pasado, tuvimos una respuesta muy positiva. Esperamos que ése sea el caso otra vez este año.

Una de las razones que involucrarse en ministerios parroquiales (servir de voluntario) es tan importante es porque es una manera muy bella de devolverle a Dios. Involucrarse en ministerios parroquiales es una manera de darle gracias a Dios por nuestras bendiciones, nuestro trabajo y nuestros recursos económicos. Le damos gracias a Dios no solo con sencillamente compartiendo nuestro tesoro; le damos gracias compartiendo nuestro tiempo y nuestro talento también. Sunday morning classes begin September 9 at 9:15 in the school gym (entrance on 108th Street). Tuesday and Wednesday classes begin September 11 and 12 at 4:00 in the church Center (below the church, entrance on 107th Street and Saturday classes begin September 15 at 4:00 in the school gym. Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA)

The RCIA at Ascension is a faith-sharing group accompanying adults in their preparation for the reception of Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation. This process includes interactive discussions about the different aspects of the Catholic faith. If you are consid-ering becoming a Catholic or are already baptized and would like to receive the sacraments of 1st Communion and/or Confirmation, the RCIA is the right place for you. Sacraments can be received at the Easter Vigil. RCIA meets every Tuesday night at 7 PM, begin-ning September 11th, 2018 in the Church rectory. RCIA also wel-comes all Catholics who received the Sacraments, and seek to revive their faith and share their views of the Catholic Church. Ascension Culinary Institute (ACI) Calling all youth, ages 10 – 21, interested in being part of the team at the Ascension Culinary Institute (ACI). This is the 11th year the ACI is accepting applications for the sum-mer/fall program. If you’re interested in cooking, experienc-ing new foods and culture, learning cooking techniques and having fun while being safe, this is the summer program for you. Class starts Tuesday, July 31 and will be held once eve-ry Tuesday in the rectory kitchen from 6:30 PM to 10:30 PM. In the fall we will move to Thursdays.
