Known Limitations

Configuration

• When running full feature system software, do not use theLoad option in theManageconfiguration menu to manually load configuration files as this is an unsupportedfunction and may cause the slot controller to reboot.

• When setting the time and date, always supply the leading zero for the hour setting. Otherthe tens digit of the minutes setting is cleared.

• If an odd number of digits are inputted for the E.164 address, the GDC APEX Switch appa 0 as the last digit when the address is displayed.

• Entries in the Authentication Table are only accepted if they are contiguous. If an entry inAuthentication Table has been deleted, a new entry must use the same entry number as tthat was just deleted.

• If the CE is the root of a multicast tree, adding or restarting a PVC causes data loss on otcircuits associated with the root.

• The Broadcast of the Authentication Table is not consistent. Verify that the table is propesent to a target slot controller by viewing its Authentication Table.

• Security Issue; No more than 6 entries with traps enabled should be entered in theauthentication table. Exceeding this limit may seriously impact the user's ability to accessslot 0 mib. (AR6307)

Signaling

Q.SIG (Optional Feature)

• With an ACP or ACS slot controller in slot 0, there is a limit of 300 possible max. connectio

• With an ACP or ACS slot controller in non-slot 0, there is a limit of 500 possible max.connections.

ILMI

• If using SNMP authentication, set the IP Address to0.0.0.0 and the community string toILMI for the ILMI entry (this is not necessary if ILMI support is turned off). Beginning withGDC APEX ATM Switch Version 4.1.1, you can turn ILMI support on or off.

SVC

• Calls with a validstatus = U3 are released inappropriately. (AR6199)

• AAL 1E test cases fail because the outgoing setup adds an additional byte to the incominsetup. (AR6392)

SVC/SPVC

• SVCs do not reroute in GDC APEX if Explicit DTLs are used.

• The Display Route feature displays only information for SVCs/SPVCs that use DTL stylerouting.

Switch Operations

System

• Unexpected traffic on the management VC (0/5) causes the ECC to lockup inFault .(AR6467)

OAM Performance Monitoring: Connection Count vs. PM Source Count

If different slot controllers are used across the switch fabric, then the limit of 64 PM sources ireached. If slot N/link 0 is used on the egress and slot N/link 1 is used on the ingress, the follotakes place: When a PM source is established on slot N/link 0, the user cells coming into sloLink 1 are counted as they enter the ingress connection of the switch. For every B user cells, wB is the number of cells in the specified block size, a PM Forward monitoring (FM) cell isgenerated. The user cells and FM cells are sent out through the egress connection on slot Ndownstream to a remote PM sink connection. The remote PM sink calculates PM statistics areturns the results in Backward Reporting (BR) cells upstream towards the PM source. Thescells are collected by the PM source slot N/link 0 ingress connection and are routed up to the smanagement processor.

Therefore, when a single slot controller is used on both sides of the switch fabric joiningconnections, then each PM source established uses both connections. Therefore, in this casreach a limit of 32 PM sources involving 64 connections.

Network Timing

NTM Software

• With a two-line reference (OC-3), a primary line fault causes a major alarm which shouldonly a minor alarm. (AR6399)

EX

• With an ECC slot controller in Slot-0, enteringM-9-8 indicates a NTM compatible SODOCwhen there is no SODOC on the ECC slot controller. (AR6580)

SNMP

• The LIM fault trap is displayed in the events table, but is not transmitted from the switch.(AR6818)

Status and Diagnostics

• Slot-0 Root screen displays the system reference clock asNon-CF LIM when the systemclocks are CF. All the LIMs are optional for System Timing. Some non-Slot-0 controllerscorrectly showStratum 3 , others showNon-CF Configuration orNon-CF LIM , andstill others toggle between two messages. Some CE Config menus showStratum 3 and theroot showsNon-CF LIM .

Tunnels

• When aconfig.cfg update is processed from the NMS/SPM, the ethernet tunnel table, mapping table, logical table, Physical table, and statTable mibs are all corrupted. Therefocalls can be generated from the SPM and the same results follow after the updatedconfig.cfg file. (AR7372)

Traffic Management

MOLN

• When MOLN is changed to a new VPI/VCI, e.g., 0/31, both 0/16 and 0/31 appear in the Vstatus table. The user must do a restart on the slot controller for the resource change.

• When a link type is configured as NNI, MOLN is ‘assumed’ to be required. In certain casesuser may want to allow proprietary signalling messages between nodes, but not managetraffic. This can be accomplished by configuring the MOLN VC to use a different VPI / VCon each end of the link.

Policing

• ThePolicing disable option in theSVC Resource Tableshould apply to all connectiontypes (PVCs, SPVCs and SVCs) at any NNI link. Currently this only applies to signaledconnections. (AR6436)

Redundancy

• Infrequently, Slot-0 redundancy switchovers may cause a few data errors on the GDC APSwitch ports.

Switch Fabric Modules

XH

• With a full Model 1 NPX shelf configured and one XH installed, bit errors are observed.(AR7371)

Slot Controller Modules

CE

• During the narrow band and wide band phases of acquisition, the cell FIFO is allowed to exthe maximum, causing a 10-second time period when bit errors may be observed.

• When the CE adaptation controller is the root of a multicast tree, adding or restarting a Pcauses data loss on other circuits associated with the root.

• AIS is not generated for starvation and overflow conditions.

• SRTS timing cannot be used when running a digital or payload loopback.

CHFRC

• When AMI is selected, use inverted data to avoid errored frames because of the numberin the data.

• In the channel config displayOverbooking = none means 100% utilization. Overbookingenables over utilization of the channel.

• Link status does not indicate the actual status of the physical link. The front panel LED disand Slot-0 root menu link status indicate only that a given link is enabled, i.e., active, andnot reflect the state of the physical link.

• Only the last cell of a sequence supports CLP=1-to-DE=1 mapping. This mapping occursif the last cell belonging to a frame has the CLP bit set.

FRC

• TheAdmin Status fields of the FRC include an option fornotReady andwait . Thesecan not be set and should not be selected. (AR4554)

• Error messages and random characters appear in MIB24 and25 fields. (AR6516)

ACP/ACS

• Given the ACP, when the Loss of Cell Delineation Alarm is active, theLoss of CellDelineation Defect status remains set tono.

• Given the ACP or the ACS with the NMS3000 Manager,xpStat Table DOC and LowPriority FIFO statistics are not supported. However, these fields are displayed as value4294967295 on the NMS3000vcStats - switch fabric screens. Disregard these values.

• Given the A-series cell controllers with the NMS3000 Manager,vcStats Link 0 or Link 1can contain table information for circuits that are no longer active. Examples of these inacircuits are SPVC/SVC calls that have been terminated, a PVC status has been changedvalid from running , or the circuit has been deleted from the table. In these cases, thevcStats as viewed via a Telnet session is accurate for the links.

• The Invalid VPI/VCI field values are not accurate for thexpStats table. This field reportsout-of-range VPI only.

• Given the ACP, when a single header error is injected in two consecutive cell headers, theproperly corrects the first single bit error and discards the second errored cell. However,HCS Error count, under the PLCP Config/Stats, does not increment its count by 1 when therrored cell is discarded. When one or more cells containing multiple header bit errors ardetected, the ACP properly discards all cells and the HCS Error count is incrementedaccurately.

• When using a commercial grade VCR in cue mode (fast play or fast rewind mode displaytape contents), the encoder may enter a mode where jittery video is produced. To get out ocondition, the user mayStop the VCR or turn the VCR power off for a few seconds. If theproblem still persists, the encoder section needs to be reset. (AR6789)

Operational GuidelinesThe following describes recommended guidelines for achieving optimal performance from thsystem, slot controllers, and LIMs under the GDC APEX ATM Switch System Software Vers5.2.2.

System Guidelines

• When using multiple signaling channels, CAC for switched connections is done on logicaSAPs and physical SAPs while CAC for PVCs is done on physical SAPs only. This isequivalent to having a separate bandwidth table for PVCs and SPVCs.

• Do not use the Debug option available in theDiagnostics/Inject_cell/OAM screen. This is supplied as a SERVICE SUPPORT TOOL ONLY.

• Should an ECC slot controller reboot, full recovery of all configured connections may takeaverage of 5 minutes per 1,000 connections configured.

• Do not use a VPI value over 255 with ACP or ACS cell controllers.

• By design, an A-Series Slot-0 controller will always perform a force warm start, even whenormal warm start is invoked. Non A-Series slot controllers warm-start when a warm-starinvoked.

• During normal operation of the Switch, a minimum of one slot controller must be installedeach power supply unit operating (i.e., a GDC APEX shelf with four power supplies operatmust have at least four slot controllers). Having too many power supply units installed fornumber of slot controllers may cause invalid power supply events and TRAPs.

• After changing the link type (in the PVC Resources) from NNI to UNI, the target slot contromust be warm-started. Changing the link type from UNI to NNI does not require a warm-s

• The ETH adaptation controller traffic shaping is for the Peak Cell Rate only. Traffic shapingthe Sustained Cell Rate has not been implemented. (AR4507)

• When using the ETH adaptation controller, full, line-rate performance on all frame sizes mnot be consistent with multiple ports and Tunnels. As multiple Tunnels are utilized, the oveperformance is degraded. When using multiple shaping rates or Spanning Tree, similarconditions may exist.

• Do not perform nested Telnet sessions as they will result in degraded Telnet performanc

• When the screen menu prompts you to typeesc to abort , you may have to press Escapetwo or more times.

• The auxiliary port on the MAC and MAC1 chassis is not supported.

• The filtering database on a bridge does not consistently report the source mac address frosending device. An “invalid” entry is reported. This occurs when sending 64- and 128-bytframes across 4 bridges at the same time.

• TheZap cell interface function on the craft portRoot Menu screen was provided formaintenance purposes and should not be used in normal practice as a means of updatinswitch configuration. All configuration options of the 060 processor are dynamic and sho

not require a reset. In the event a Tunnel configuration gets into a transient state, a Zap mused to resolve this problem. This will reload the 060 portion of theconfig.cfg file andresync the master and slave processors.

• The operation of the ECC cell controller does not allow a network address to be used asaddress of the node. For example, a node address of192.1.1.0 is no longer valid as inprevious releases.

E-Series OAM Performance Monitoring (PM)

For proper operation of PM Functionality, you must set the connection type (Manageconfiguration, OAM Configuration/Status , OAM VC Port Config/Status Table, connectiontype) and the Performance Mon (Manage configuration, OAM Configuration/Status , OAM VCPort Config/Status Table, Performance Mon:) so that the flow type and connection type are thsame. For example:

If the connection type is set tosegment endpoint, the PM source must be set toact_source_seg_manualand the PM sink must be set toact_sink_seg_manual.

If the connection type is set toend-to-end endpoint, the PM source must be set toact_source_ee_manualand the PM sink must be set toact_sink_ee_manual.

MPG2V LIM

The following describes recommended guidelines for achieving optimal performance from thMPG2V LIM with Softwarempg2v.cod , version 1_10.

• Allow up to nine minutes for the VE/MPG2V LIM to set to reload and reboot and tosend/receive ATM traffic following a loss of power to the chassis.

• Recommended audio configurations:48kHz or 32kHz samplingMPEG Layer 1 (mono or stereo)MPEG Layer 2 (mono or stereo)

• Recommended network Peak Cell Rates:Cell Count for Cost Estimation (worst case)cell_rate = (video_bitrate + audio_bitrate + 50000) X 1.35 / (47 X 8)

• The minimal cell rate generated by the MPG2V is 670 cps.

• Video mode MPEG1 is not supported.

• Audio local digital, video remote analog, and channel 0 local are the only loopbacks thatsupported.

Note The possibility exists that the Zap process will not be able to correctly load the configurationinto the 060 processor. As a result, no configuration, i.e., Tunnels, IP Addresses, etc., will bedisplayed. If this occurs, do not saveon exit. Retry the Zap and confirm that the configuration iscorrectly loaded before saving to flash.

NoteNote Cell-based Continuity check and Performance Monitoring are currently not operational. Onlthe manual selections are operational.

Note Bitrate is expressed in bits per second (bps). Cell rate is expressed in cells per second (cps

• Profile 1 option enables the comb filter. Luma and chroma overflow conditions could occwhen the comb filter is enabled. These overflow conditions are characterized as dark patcthe picture with very high luminance zones.

• The audio interface input channels select is governed by the audio encoderNum ChannelsMIB entry. Only changes to the latter are processed.

• Homogenous video format support only. Set the input standard and the output standardsame type on the same MPG2V LIM. The MPG2V LIM does not support mixed formats(transcoding).

Audio/Video Delays

The following end-to-end worst case delays are found when operating two codecs in a singlenode (Table 2).

Configuration Guidelines

• The slot controller names have been changed in the MIB inVersion 5.2.2. This affects how theyare displayed via telnet.

• Ensure resources are available when configuring PVCs. Services which require more resothan are available will not activate. No error messages are generated in this case.

• You cannot use alphabetic characters to set the Vital Product Info for revision levels. Thereyou cannot use this information to identify hardware assembly revision levels. Unseat theassembly to verify the revision level.

• Prior to software download or configuring the NTM, you must set theConfiguration.Statusscreen optionNTM compatible S0DOC: to yes.

• Do not enable statistics collection if 1000 or more connections are established; modulesreboot.

• Do not configure a PVC or SPVC with all the following parameters set to0: SSlot, Slink,SVPI, SVCI, DSlot, DLink , DVPI , andDVCI . The system uses this setting internally.

• For A-series slot controllers, approximately 480 cps of bandwidth must be reserved for swmanagement on NNI links where the Management Overlay Network (MOLN) is to operateseries slot controllers automatically reserves 3,567 cps at a link for MOLN.

• SPVC VCI starts are fixed at 0. The VCI start of 32 that is displayed on the screen is intenas a reminder that VCIs below 32 are reserved and should be used with caution.

• A new option has been added to theSVC Resource Table, Auto SAP OFF with the defaultset toNo. If set toYes, the software automatically turns off this SAP when there is a signalifailure between the end-to-end signaling entities.

• When configuring the FRC adaptation controller, always use Link-0 in thePVCConfiguration/Status table.

• When configuring VSM timeslots for transporting Nx64k data, AAL1 is mandatory. Whentransporting 64k data, AAL1 is recommended. AAL2 can be used for 64k data, however, errors may occur if more than 90 64-K channels are configured with CAS, and CAS bits achanging at a high frequency.

• Regarding VSM echo cancellation, putting in tandem the echo cancellers can cause degraof voice quality. A voice circuit that traverses more than one echo canceller, inside or outthe VSM adaptation controller, can experience degraded signal quality. The limitation isavoided by enabling the echo canceller only at the final end points of the connection.

• When configuring ATM multicast on the VSM, a timeslot on the source end of a unidirectioPVC/SPVC must have the conditioning towards the ATM side set toNone. Otherwise, theVSM interprets a lack of cells as an event requiring conditioning, and conditions the ATMingress cell stream.

• Ensure all bundles are active before saving theconfig.cfg file. If not, upon reboot, thebundles do not return to the running state.

• The VSM adaptation controller does not support AAL2 multicast with CAS. (AR5365)

• Do not change theVP Start range for a link to 0 without deleting all the circuits over the linkIf you change theVP Start range on an NNI to 0, it changes the link type to a UNI, it re-initializes the VC routing RAM, and then kills every circuit on the link. The only work-arounis to change the VP range back again and warm-start the slot controller. (AR4576)

• The DV2 Model 1 chassis has contacts for two external user status inputs. The alarm haallows these inputs and their SNMP Traps to be either enabled or disabled. The inputs cadefined as active-open or active-closed, and thealr_cls.txt file allows them to generateCritical, Major, or Minor alarm types. Although the SMM in the GDC APEX IMX chassis stigenerates alarms correctly, the DV2 Model 1 chassis now ignores the input status. If configto active-open or active-closed, a contact closure has no effect. (AR4733)

Note If you enable theAuto SAP Off option, i.e., by selectingYes, you will need to manuallyturn on the SAP after a failed trunk is restored.

Note Refer toITU-T Specification G.168regarding Digital Network Cancellers.

Note TheConditioning status reported for the bundle associated with the timeslot will indicateYes when the configuration is actually implemented. This occurs on both the SCE and the VSM.

File System Guidelines

• During a TFTP, a copy of the original file being overwritten is maintained in flash while thnew file is being transferred. The new file has az character preceding the file name (e.g.,zslave.cod ). When the file transfer is successful, the original files are marked dirty andnew file is renamed to exclude thez character.

• If the file transfer is unsuccessful, the old file is maintained and the new file is marked dirtythe case of an aborted TFTP, runcheck Media followed byGarbage collect to releaseorphan sectors caused by the abort.

• After a broadcast of code from Slot-0, some slot controllers may still have the originalslave.cod and also have a file calledzslave.cod . Delete thezslave.cod file andperform a TFTP of the newslave.cod to the slot controller.

• Managing the file system is essential for ensuring sufficient room for loading new files (i.e.slave.cod ). Because the transfer process maintains the old file until the new one iscompletely received, you must maintain enough room in flash to accommodate the new fRemove all unnecessary files from flash.

• Since new temporary file names include thez character at the start, do not keep backup filesthat use az as the first character, e.g.,zconfig.cfg .

• If the system reports insufficient file space, performcheck Media followed byGarbagecollect to recover any orphaned sectors of the flash EPROM.

• To improve TFTP reliability with a SUN workstation, type? at theTFTP prompt, then set theSUN workstation retransmit timer to1 second (re 1 <cr>) and maximum time-out to120seconds (ti 120 <cr>).

• TheDLIM Type options are in upper and lower case alpha characters in the softwareconfigurationPhysical Layoutscreen. The character entered for theDLIM type is casesensitive.

• When upgrading the redundant Slot-0 controller, the slot controller should be prepared bremoving the old files and performing aGarbage collect . To prevent the in-servicecontroller from attempting to replace these files before this preparation is complete, the AUTRANSFER feature should be disabled first. Once the old files are removed and theGarbagecollect is complete, enabling AUTO TRANSFER allows the new code to be automaticatransferred to the out-of-service controller.

• Intermittently, files may get corrupted during “broadcast”. If after a “broadcast” the slot donot come out of boot, compare the original file size to the file size on the affected slot contro(AR6944)

Redundancy Guidelines

• There is a one-minute delay beforeconfig.cfg , users.cfg , hosts , anddef.rtb areTFTP’d to the out-of-service Slot-0 controller. This occurs only when the redundancyavailability transitions fromno to yes(e.g., after power up, reset, or plugging in a new out-oservice Slot-0 controller). This permits the system to stabilize before initiating a TFTP. Oinitiations of TFTP, e.g., modifying/savingconfig.cfg , do not cause a delay.

Note Inserting any slot controller other than an ETH into the Redundant Slot-0 shelf position canresult in damage to the ETH adaptation controller in Slot-0.

• When configuring Slot-0 redundancy, install the slot controller with its thumbwheel switchto 0 (main) in the main Slot-0 slot (just left of the switch fabric). Install the slot controllewith its thumbwheel switch set to4 (standby) in the standby Slot-0 slot. After installation, the main Slot-0 controller loads its MAC address on the standby Slot-0 controller so thatcommunications with the NMS is maintained after a redundancy switchover.

• Transfer of the switch fabric betweenMain andStandby is accomplished by themanagement processor via use of “health-check” cells. If the processor fails to get a “heacheck” response for 6 seconds, it assumes that the switch fabric has failed (or has beenremoved). It takes another 1 second for the processor to initiate the switchover (including250ms for the transfer to take place) for a total of approximately 7 seconds (a “health-cheperiod). It is also possible for the processor to take two “health-check” periods to determia failure of the switch fabric has occurred, making the maximum total time equal to 13 secoTherefore, upon a switch fabric failure, switchover to the standby switch fabric may take f7 to 13 seconds. In testing, the switchover took between 7 and 10 seconds. The 13-secointerval is a calculated, worst-case condition.
