COMBINING SIMPLE SENTENCES INTO A SINGLE COMPOUND SENTENCE.

• Synthesis of Sentences is the process of combining simple sentences, using Coordinative Conjunctions, to form Compound Sentences.

Example :

The wind blew. The rain fell. The lightning flashed.

There are three sentences.

• We can combine all these three sentences to form a Compound Sentence.

The wind blew, the rain fell and the lightning flashed.

This sentence is a Compound Sentence.

Two simple sentences can be combined together to form a

compound sentence by using Coordinating conjunctions.

Coordinating conjunctions are further divided into four kinds.

The Conjunctions which add one statement to another are called Cumulative.

The Conjunctions which express opposition or contrast between two

statements are called Adversative.

He is a fool. He is a knave He is a fool and a knave.

He is a footballer. He is a cricketer. He is not only a footballer but also a cricketer.

She is an actor. She is an orator. She is both an actor and an orator

He is a conscientious person. He is honest. He is conscientious as well as honest.

He is slow. He is sure. He is slow but he is sure.

I was annoyed. I kept quiet. I was annoyed, still I kept quite.

He failed. He persevered. He failed, nevertheless he persevered.

He was all right. He was fatigued. He was all right; only fatigued.

He is not well. He comes to school daily. He is not well yet he comes to school daily.

He will not oppose my design. I cannot assure of it.

He will not oppose my design; however, I can not assure of it.

The Conjunctions which express a choice between two alternatives are

called Alternative.

Make haste. You will be late. Make haste or you will be late.

Come in. Go out Either come in or go out.

Do not be a borrower. Do not be a lender. Neither a borrower nor a lender be.

He is obstinate. He was punished. He was obstinate; therefore he was punished.

I cannot see. It is very dark. I can not see for it is very dark.

It is raining heavily. I will take an umbrella with me.

It is raining heavily, so I will take an umbrella with me.

Conjunctions which suggest that one statement stands as a consequence of the other are called Illative.

EXERCISECombine each set of Simple Sentences into one Compound

sentence.

1. The way was long. The wind was cold.

2. It is raining heavily. I will take an umbrella with me.

3. Tom passed the test. John passed the test.

4. He was found guilty. He was hanged.

5. The paper is good. The binding is very bad.

6. He was fined. He was sent to prison.

7. He is rich. He is unhappy.

8. She must weep. She will die.

9. Do not harm anyone. Do not lie.

10. I cannot see. It is dark.

FORMING COMPLEX SENTENCE FROM SIMPLE SENTENCES

• Two or more than two simple sentences may be combined to form a single complex sentence and this can be done in three ways:

• BY USING A NOUN CLAUSE

• BY USING AN ADJECTIVE CLAUSE

• BY USING AN ADVERB CLAUSE

USING A NOUN CLAUSE.

• Ali is innocent. This is our belief.

Our belief is that Ali is innocent.

• He will be late. It is certain.

That he will be late is certain.

• He may be innocent. I do not know.

I do not know whether he is innocent or not.

• Vivek is absent today. Do you know the reason why?

Do you know the reason why Vivek is absent today?

IT DOES THE WORK OF A NOUN IN A COMPLEX SENTENCE.For eg: He thought that he was clever. (He thought what? He thought that he was

clever.)

USING AN ADJECTIVE CLAUSE

• I met Rajiv’s father. He is now a Police Inspector.

I met Rajiv’s father who is now a Police Inspector.

• My sister will always be grateful to you. You helped her.

My sister, whom you helped, will always be grateful to you.

• She keeps her ornaments in a safe. This is the safe.

This is the safe where she keeps her ornaments.

• A villager and his wife had a hen. The hen laid an egg everyday. The egg was golden.

The goose, which a villager and his wife had, laid a golden egg everyday

IT DOES THE WORK OF AN ADJECTIVE IN A COMPLEX SENTENCE.For eg: Servants who are honest are trusted. (What type of servants? Servants who are

honest.)

USING AN ADVERB CLAUSE

• He cannot pass. He must work hard. (CONDITION)

He cannot pass unless he works hard.

• Gafur is content. He is poor. (CONTRAST)

Gafur is content though he is poor.

• Amit is clever. Rahit is equally clever. (Comparison)

Amit is as clever as Rohit.

• My sister is going to Japan she wishes to become a doctor. (REASON)

My sister is going to Japan because she wishes to be a doctor.

IT DOES THE WORK OF AN ADVERB IN A COMPLEX SENTENCE.ADVERB CLAUSES ARE OF MANY KINDS AND CAN BE CLASSIFIED AS ADVERB CLAUSES OF

–TIME, PLACE, PURPOSE, CAUSE, CONDITION, COMPARISON, CONTRAST, MANNER.

• Amit is working hard. He wants to pass the examination. (PURPOSE)

Anil is working hard that he may pass the examination.

• Fools rush in some places. Angels fear to tread there. (PLACE)

Fools rush in where angels fear to tread.

• The bell rang. All the boys went home. (TIME)

As soon as the bell rang, all boys went home.

EXERCISE

Combine each set of Simple sentences to form a Complex sentence.

1. You deceived him. That was his complaint.

2. The train will arrive at a certain time. Do you know the time?

3. He will waste his time. That is certain.

4. The theft was committed last night. The man has been caught.

5. He has many plans of earning money quickly. All of them have failed.

6. The time was six o’clock. The accident happened then.

7. He saw us. He disappeared immediately.

8. He is old. He enjoys good health.

9. He ran so quickly. He soon overtook me.

10. You must hurry. You will miss the train otherwise.
