0001 10:00:01:22 10:00:04:19

The number of familieswith second and third generations

0002 10:00:04:19 10:00:06:19

who've never worked in the city...

0003 10:00:06:19 10:00:11:15

And that unfortunately carries onwith some of those families.

0004 10:00:12:06 10:00:16:18

I think one of the key thingsthat's changed has been the belief -

0005 10:00:16:18 10:00:19:19

and that's belief in the staff, the parents and the children

0006 10:00:19:19 10:00:25:01

that here is a school where youwill achieve and you can achieve.

0007 10:00:26:13 10:00:29:23

(narrator) We've travelled acrossthe country to visit five areas

0008 10:00:29:23 10:00:33:02

where schools are working ininnovative and interesting ways

0009 10:00:33:02 10:00:38:01

to raise attainment and are

Page 2: SYNOPSIS TEMPLATEarchive.teachfind.com/ttv/static.teachers.tv/shared/files/10779.doc  · Web viewBridging the Gap: In Portsmouth. 0001 10:00:01:22 10:00:04:19. The number of families

succeeding in bridging the gap.

0010 10:00:45:06 10:00:48:08

In this episode we've cometo Portsmouth on the south coast

0011 10:00:48:08 10:00:51:23

to find out what their schools aredoing to bridge the attainment gap.

0012 10:00:51:23 10:00:55:03

Portsmouth suffers fromareas of urban deprivation

0013 10:00:55:03 10:00:59:00

with above-average levelsof child poverty.

0014 10:00:59:00 10:01:02:07

It might sound incredibly strange, but some of our children...

0015 10:01:02:07 10:01:05:03

We have the sea 1.5 miles awayfrom our school

0016 10:01:05:03 10:01:10:03

and lots of them by the age of sevenhave never been to visit it.

0017 10:01:10:03 10:01:12:12

So it's importantwe provide that opportunity

0018 10:01:12:12 10:01:17:06

where perhaps the parents haven'tseen that there's been a need to.

0019 10:01:18:18 10:01:21:05

Page 3: SYNOPSIS TEMPLATEarchive.teachfind.com/ttv/static.teachers.tv/shared/files/10779.doc  · Web viewBridging the Gap: In Portsmouth. 0001 10:00:01:22 10:00:04:19. The number of families

For me that's a great sadnessbut also a great joy

0020 10:01:21:05 10:01:24:12

that we're able to bringthat richness to them.

0021 10:01:26:21 10:01:29:13

Portsmouth has had a historyof urban deprivation,

0022 10:01:29:13 10:01:32:04

being a port city.

0023 10:01:32:04 10:01:34:22

It does seem to follow ports around.

0024 10:01:34:22 10:01:38:05

If we look at Liverpool and Bristoland even London to a degree,

0025 10:01:38:05 10:01:41:08

you do find that there'ssignificant urban deprivation

0026 10:01:41:08 10:01:43:09

in the ports around the country.

0027 10:01:43:09 10:01:48:19

We have suffered for that over theyears for many different reasons.

0028 10:01:48:19 10:01:50:16

We are a small island

0029 10:01:50:16 10:01:53:00

but the most heavily

Page 4: SYNOPSIS TEMPLATEarchive.teachfind.com/ttv/static.teachers.tv/shared/files/10779.doc  · Web viewBridging the Gap: In Portsmouth. 0001 10:00:01:22 10:00:04:19. The number of families

populated island

0030 10:01:53:00 10:01:55:00

in Western Europe, for example.

0031 10:01:55:00 10:01:57:05

This has broughtits own constraints -

0032 10:01:57:05 10:02:02:04

lack of space, lack of resourcesand also lack of opportunity

0033 10:02:02:04 10:02:05:03

because so many jobs wentinto the navy and the dockyard

0034 10:02:05:03 10:02:07:17

which meant there weren'tso many opportunities

0035 10:02:07:17 10:02:11:22

for other business activitiesto take place in the city.

0036 10:02:11:22 10:02:15:03

(narrator) Faced with theseproblems, St John's Primary School

0037 10:02:15:03 10:02:19:02

and St Edmund's Secondary Schoolare working to raise attainment

0038 10:02:19:02 10:02:21:11

by engaging parents,increasing attendance

0039 10:02:21:11 10:02:26:03

Page 5: SYNOPSIS TEMPLATEarchive.teachfind.com/ttv/static.teachers.tv/shared/files/10779.doc  · Web viewBridging the Gap: In Portsmouth. 0001 10:00:01:22 10:00:04:19. The number of families

and helping to ease the transitionfrom primary to secondary.

0040 10:02:31:19 10:02:34:04

Getting the studentsto regularly attend school

0041 10:02:34:04 10:02:37:21

is one of this school's keystrategies for raising attainment

0042 10:02:37:21 10:02:40:06

and one which headCatherine Hobbs believes

0043 10:02:40:06 10:02:42:24

moved her school from the bottomof the league tables

0044 10:02:42:24 10:02:46:23

to being one of the top five schoolsin Portsmouth.

0045 10:02:46:23 10:02:50:03

Attendance has been an issue for us,not drastically,

0046 10:02:50:03 10:02:53:15

but we're sort of a fractionbelow the national average.

0047 10:02:53:15 10:02:57:13

Year on year it's been verydifficult to push us above the 94%

0048 10:02:57:13 10:03:01:09

and it was an issue raised for usat our last Ofsted.

Page 6: SYNOPSIS TEMPLATEarchive.teachfind.com/ttv/static.teachers.tv/shared/files/10779.doc  · Web viewBridging the Gap: In Portsmouth. 0001 10:00:01:22 10:00:04:19. The number of families

0049 10:03:01:09 10:03:04:15

The children are aware thaton a weekly basis in our assembly

0050 10:03:04:15 10:03:06:14

we'll announce the class

0051 10:03:06:14 10:03:09:16

that has the greatest attendanceduring the week.

0052 10:03:09:16 10:03:13:00

We've all got something to offerbut we can only offer it

0053 10:03:13:00 10:03:16:00

if we're all hereand we're all here every day.

0054 10:03:16:00 10:03:20:00

This has led to some of the childrenalmost saying to their peers:

0055 10:03:20:00 10:03:22:09

"We didn't get the awardbecause of you."

0056 10:03:22:09 10:03:26:17

And so we've actually improved theattendance of some of our children

0057 10:03:26:17 10:03:30:07

who would have the occasional dayoff when they didn't really need to.

0058 10:03:30:07 10:03:33:12

Don't forget that we're all workingtowards our attendance cup

Page 7: SYNOPSIS TEMPLATEarchive.teachfind.com/ttv/static.teachers.tv/shared/files/10779.doc  · Web viewBridging the Gap: In Portsmouth. 0001 10:00:01:22 10:00:04:19. The number of families

that we're going to getat the end of term.

0060 10:03:36:14 10:03:39:00

So in third place it was

0061 10:03:39:00 10:03:42:24

a joint year 2 and a joint year 1,so they deserve a round of applause.

0062 10:03:42:24 10:03:46:01

Right from our very firstreception parents' meeting

0063 10:03:46:01 10:03:48:16

I make it clear thatwe really do expect the children

0064 10:03:48:16 10:03:52:04

only to have time off if theyreally are ill and under a doctor.

0065 10:03:52:04 10:03:56:08

It's a firm and fair policy that Ihave with the parents and children.

0066 10:03:56:08 10:04:00:03

Congratulations to year 6.So, well done, year 6.

0067 10:04:00:03 10:04:02:22

(applause)

0068 10:04:02:22 10:04:05:03

During the eight yearsI've been at St John's

Page 8: SYNOPSIS TEMPLATEarchive.teachfind.com/ttv/static.teachers.tv/shared/files/10779.doc  · Web viewBridging the Gap: In Portsmouth. 0001 10:00:01:22 10:00:04:19. The number of families

0069 10:04:05:03 10:04:07:04

I've seen dramatic changes

0070 10:04:07:04 10:04:11:04

and I think one of the key thingsthat's changed has been the belief -

0071 10:04:11:04 10:04:14:22

and that's belief in the staff, the parents and the children

0072 10:04:14:22 10:04:17:10

that here is a schoolwhere you will achieve

0073 10:04:17:10 10:04:20:20

and you can achieve and you'llbe given the support to do so.

0074 10:04:27:19 10:04:33:13

(narrator) St John's offers familylearning to help engage parents.

0075 10:04:33:13 10:04:36:07

I was watching and most peoplehad their fingers...

0076 10:04:36:07 10:04:40:01

It was like they were putting theirfinger on the word and copying it,

0077 10:04:40:01 10:04:42:03

just like a child would do.

0078 10:04:42:03 10:04:45:19

And they're physically justconcentrating on their writing,

Page 9: SYNOPSIS TEMPLATEarchive.teachfind.com/ttv/static.teachers.tv/shared/files/10779.doc  · Web viewBridging the Gap: In Portsmouth. 0001 10:00:01:22 10:00:04:19. The number of families

0079 10:04:45:19 10:04:47:16

so it is quite tricky for them.

0080 10:04:47:16 10:04:51:00

The family learning programmeis a very exciting programme

0081 10:04:51:00 10:04:53:24

and one that I know has enrichedthe life of the children,

0082 10:04:53:24 10:04:56:16

adults and staff here at St John's.

0083 10:04:56:16 10:05:02:02

We offer a termly workshopto all parents in every year group.

0084 10:05:02:02 10:05:06:15

I want you to change to the handthat you're not used to...

0085 10:05:06:15 10:05:09:11

(Catherine) It's an opportunityto show to the parents,

0086 10:05:09:11 10:05:13:07

to make them more aware of what goeson within literacy and numeracy.

0087 10:05:13:07 10:05:16:14

(woman) So, what shall we write?Who do you want to write about?

0088 10:05:16:14 10:05:20:00

We come in every Wednesdayfor the next few weeks.

Page 10: SYNOPSIS TEMPLATEarchive.teachfind.com/ttv/static.teachers.tv/shared/files/10779.doc  · Web viewBridging the Gap: In Portsmouth. 0001 10:00:01:22 10:00:04:19. The number of families

0089 10:05:20:00 10:05:23:17

We have a joint session in themorning and one in the afternoon.

0090 10:05:25:04 10:05:29:06

The big part is the language for me,

0091 10:05:29:06 10:05:33:12

because I'm good at writingand everything in Spanish

0092 10:05:33:12 10:05:37:07

but not in English,so that's why I'm here.

0093 10:05:37:07 10:05:39:10

And to improve my English as well.

0094 10:05:49:03 10:05:52:09

(narrator) The changing fortunesof these schools is supported

0095 10:05:52:09 10:05:56:02

by a wider strategy developedby Portsmouth City Council.

0096 10:05:56:02 10:06:00:07

The number of familieswith second and third generations

0097 10:06:00:07 10:06:02:05

who've never worked in the city...

0098 10:06:02:05 10:06:06:04

And that unfortunately carries onwith some of those families,

Page 11: SYNOPSIS TEMPLATEarchive.teachfind.com/ttv/static.teachers.tv/shared/files/10779.doc  · Web viewBridging the Gap: In Portsmouth. 0001 10:00:01:22 10:00:04:19. The number of families

0099 10:06:06:04 10:06:10:13

so we're trying to break thosebarriers down and make sure they see

0100 10:06:10:13 10:06:13:15

there is a future for them, there are opportunities for them

0101 10:06:13:15 10:06:16:01

and they should grabthose opportunities.

0102 10:06:16:01 10:06:18:01

Good afternoon, everybody.

0103 10:06:18:01 10:06:22:10

I'm here today to tell you about theCommunity Improvement Partnerships.

0104 10:06:22:10 10:06:25:04

As you know, schools in the past,

0105 10:06:25:04 10:06:29:24

and schools still, can be very muchworking behind closed doors

0106 10:06:29:24 10:06:34:06

and it's difficult for agenciesto get involved with schools.

0107 10:06:34:06 10:06:37:24

(narrator) Today Mark Scarboroughis discussing an integrated strategy

0108 10:06:37:24 10:06:41:02

at a meetingfor voluntary community workers.

Page 12: SYNOPSIS TEMPLATEarchive.teachfind.com/ttv/static.teachers.tv/shared/files/10779.doc  · Web viewBridging the Gap: In Portsmouth. 0001 10:00:01:22 10:00:04:19. The number of families

0109 10:06:41:02 10:06:43:09

Some people might say,"Hang on a minute."

0110 10:06:43:09 10:06:46:23

"It's about schools, isn't it? Whyare you using the word 'community'?"

0111 10:06:46:23 10:06:51:18

It works both ways because if we use"School Improvement Partnerships"

0112 10:06:51:18 10:06:53:20

that would switch off organisations

0113 10:06:53:20 10:06:56:02

who thought it wasjust about schools.

0114 10:06:56:02 10:06:58:09

In actual factit's a lot more than schools.

0115 10:06:58:09 10:07:01:20

It is about extendinginto the community.

0116 10:07:01:20 10:07:04:24

Community Improvement Partnershipshave made a difference.

0117 10:07:04:24 10:07:07:23

We're measuring differentranges of impact that it's had

0118 10:07:07:23 10:07:10:04

in the city as a whole.

Page 13: SYNOPSIS TEMPLATEarchive.teachfind.com/ttv/static.teachers.tv/shared/files/10779.doc  · Web viewBridging the Gap: In Portsmouth. 0001 10:00:01:22 10:00:04:19. The number of families

0119 10:07:10:04 10:07:15:04

(narrator) The partnerships divideup Portsmouth into five areas.

0120 10:07:15:04 10:07:17:21

Each area has a project managerto coordinate

0121 10:07:17:21 10:07:19:18

local services for the schools.

0122 10:07:19:18 10:07:24:21

St Edmund's and St John's areboth supported by Helen Corkery.

0123 10:07:24:21 10:07:27:11

Today was really about

0124 10:07:27:11 10:07:31:02

the representatives of thecommunity and voluntary sector,

0125 10:07:31:02 10:07:35:01

whose work involves workingwith children and young people,

0126 10:07:35:01 10:07:39:15

coming together as a group so theycould really speak with one voice

0127 10:07:39:15 10:07:41:15

about what the issues are for them,

0128 10:07:41:15 10:07:44:03

about how they would liketo be more involved

0129 10:07:44:03 10:07:47:10

and their views as to howthat can best be achieved.

0131 10:07:51:06 10:07:54:02

(narrator) St Edmund's Secondaryhas felt a real benefit

0132 10:07:54:02 10:07:57:09

from this newly integratedcommunity support.

0133 10:07:57:09 10:08:01:06

In the past the schoolswere very much isolated,

0134 10:08:01:06 10:08:03:13

so when you had problems

0135 10:08:03:13 10:08:07:04

and you wanted to ringsocial services or health people

0136 10:08:07:04 10:08:11:00

it was difficult to get hold of themand you didn't have link people.

0137 10:08:11:00 10:08:16:19

Now you know who they areand you have met with them before

0138 10:08:16:19 10:08:19:24

so the turnaround is faster,

0139 10:08:19:24 10:08:22:01

the communication is better

0140 10:08:22:01 10:08:26:11

and the child is at the centreof everything that we do.

0141 10:08:32:17 10:08:36:03

(narrator) Easing the transitionfrom primary to secondary is seen

0142 10:08:36:03 10:08:39:03

as another key solutionto bridging the attainment gap.

0143 10:08:39:03 10:08:42:24

St Edmund's head teacherIsabelle O'Mara is actively working

0144 10:08:42:24 10:08:46:01

to engage prospectiveyear 7 students.

0145 10:08:46:01 10:08:49:24

We have visits from pupilsin year 5 and year 6

0146 10:08:49:24 10:08:52:06

who come in for taster days.

0147 10:08:52:06 10:08:57:23

We have staff who do presentationsto the primary schools,

to the pupils, to the parents.

So by the time they come to year 7they already know the school.

0150 10:09:06:00 10:09:10:00

They know the layout. They know a lot of the teachers.

0151 10:09:10:00 10:09:12:02

We do what we canhere at this school

0152 10:09:12:02 10:09:15:01

to make sure thatthey do feel eased into it.

0153 10:09:15:01 10:09:18:19

What sort of feedback did you getfrom the children this morning

0154 10:09:18:19 10:09:20:14

about how they settled in?

0155 10:09:20:14 10:09:22:17

My job is to make surethat before they come

0156 10:09:22:17 10:09:25:07

I have all the information necessary

0157 10:09:25:07 10:09:28:08

to ensure thatthey're correctly grouped,

0158 10:09:28:08 10:09:32:16

that the curriculum that we'replanning for them is appropriate

0159 10:09:32:16 10:09:37:04

Page 17: SYNOPSIS TEMPLATEarchive.teachfind.com/ttv/static.teachers.tv/shared/files/10779.doc  · Web viewBridging the Gap: In Portsmouth. 0001 10:00:01:22 10:00:04:19. The number of families

and that they feel happy, confidentand settled as quickly as possible.

0160 10:09:37:04 10:09:39:09

I work closely with Colin Flanagan,

0161 10:09:39:09 10:09:42:08

the deputy head there, also a class 6 teacher,

0162 10:09:42:08 10:09:47:00

and so we have regular contactthrough our joint activities

0163 10:09:47:00 10:09:49:22

and the curriculum initiativesthat we do together.

0164 10:09:49:22 10:09:52:16

(narrator) Along with workingto improve transition,

0165 10:09:52:16 10:09:56:01

Isabelle O'Mara wanted to raiseboys' attendance and attainment.

0166 10:09:56:01 10:09:57:23

Part of the solution has been

0167 10:09:57:23 10:10:00:22

the use of a mobile skate parkat the school.

0168 10:10:00:22 10:10:05:01

The most important thingis creating an environment

0169 10:10:05:01 10:10:07:04

Page 18: SYNOPSIS TEMPLATEarchive.teachfind.com/ttv/static.teachers.tv/shared/files/10779.doc  · Web viewBridging the Gap: In Portsmouth. 0001 10:00:01:22 10:00:04:19. The number of families

that pupils want to come toin the morning.

0170 10:10:07:04 10:10:11:20

They get up and they want to say,"I can't wait to come to school."

0171 10:10:15:14 10:10:19:01

Therefore you need to make schoolmuch more attractive

0172 10:10:19:01 10:10:21:23

and to have exciting lessons.

0173 10:10:25:09 10:10:28:20

To have things that are going onoutside lessons as well,

0174 10:10:28:20 10:10:32:20

because we have a lot of childrenwho are not keen to come to lessons

0175 10:10:32:20 10:10:37:15

and we need to attract them by doingthings that perhaps they like.

0176 10:10:37:15 10:10:41:09

(narrator) Boys' attendance improvedon days the skate park was running

0177 10:10:41:09 10:10:45:21

and the school is now looking forfunding for a permanent skate park.

0178 10:10:55:03 10:10:59:04

Raising aspirations is a key elementin closing the attainment gap.

0179 10:11:02:00 10:11:06:01

Page 19: SYNOPSIS TEMPLATEarchive.teachfind.com/ttv/static.teachers.tv/shared/files/10779.doc  · Web viewBridging the Gap: In Portsmouth. 0001 10:00:01:22 10:00:04:19. The number of families

These year 6 children are visitingthe University of Portsmouth

0180 10:11:06:01 10:11:08:01

as part of the UP for It scheme.

0181 10:11:08:01 10:11:10:24

A lot of the areasof Portsmouth are areas

0182 10:11:10:24 10:11:15:13

where entry into higher educationhas traditionally been quite low.

0183 10:11:15:13 10:11:17:10

There's a question in your booklet:

0184 10:11:17:10 10:11:20:08

"Name three thingsyou can see in the library."

0185 10:11:20:08 10:11:22:21

I think it's importantfor all children to learn

0186 10:11:22:21 10:11:27:07

they can do what they want to do andhigher education could help them.

0187 10:11:27:07 10:11:30:03

So it's just that we wereone of the first universities

0188 10:11:30:03 10:11:32:20

that started to do workwith primary schools.

0189 10:11:32:20 10:11:35:08

Page 20: SYNOPSIS TEMPLATEarchive.teachfind.com/ttv/static.teachers.tv/shared/files/10779.doc  · Web viewBridging the Gap: In Portsmouth. 0001 10:00:01:22 10:00:04:19. The number of families

That's the age wherethey're starting to think

0190 10:11:35:08 10:11:38:14

about what they might wantto do when they're older.

0191 10:11:38:14 10:11:42:24

For them to actually go and seethe university hands on

0192 10:11:42:24 10:11:46:01

and experience whatuniversity courses are like,

0193 10:11:46:01 10:11:49:23

it just raises awareness thatthere's something beyond GCSEs,

0194 10:11:49:23 10:11:52:24

beyond A Levels, for them to do.

0195 10:11:52:24 10:11:56:13

The children come in for theiryear 6 visit and they start off...

0196 10:11:56:13 10:12:00:08

We meet them in the square and thenwe bring them down to a lecture,

0197 10:12:00:08 10:12:02:17

so they have an academic lecture.

0198 10:12:02:17 10:12:05:17

It can be based around any ofthe subjects that we study here.

0199 10:12:05:17 10:12:09:08

Page 21: SYNOPSIS TEMPLATEarchive.teachfind.com/ttv/static.teachers.tv/shared/files/10779.doc  · Web viewBridging the Gap: In Portsmouth. 0001 10:00:01:22 10:00:04:19. The number of families

Today's was dentistry, so they gotto have a go at filling a tooth,

0200 10:12:09:08 10:12:12:24

learn about what dental hygienistsdo and look at the phantom heads.

0201 10:12:12:24 10:12:17:18

(woman) If I go in the mouth here, they can see exactly what I'm doing.

0202 10:12:17:18 10:12:19:21

So when I'm lookinground the mouth...

0203 10:12:19:21 10:12:22:14

And then finally they gettheir exciting bit -

0204 10:12:22:14 10:12:24:18

they get to graduateon the Guildhall steps

0205 10:12:24:18 10:12:27:19

so they get to put on a miniaturegown and they can graduate

0206 10:12:27:19 10:12:32:04

and throw their hats in the air. It's quite good fun.

0207 10:12:32:04 10:12:34:23

OK, let's hear it for Joel.

0208 10:12:34:23 10:12:38:21

I think it's important they do itbefore they go to secondary school

Page 22: SYNOPSIS TEMPLATEarchive.teachfind.com/ttv/static.teachers.tv/shared/files/10779.doc  · Web viewBridging the Gap: In Portsmouth. 0001 10:00:01:22 10:00:04:19. The number of families

0209 10:12:38:21 10:12:43:03

so that when they do gothey have a vision to work towards

0210 10:12:43:03 10:12:45:18

and they actually knuckle downand work towards

0211 10:12:45:18 10:12:48:07

whatever it isthey want to do in later life.

0212 10:12:51:01 10:12:53:19

(narrator) St Edmund'sare raising their attainment

0213 10:12:53:19 10:12:56:14

by easing the transitionfrom primary to secondary

0214 10:12:56:14 10:12:58:22

and engaging their students.

0215 10:12:58:22 10:13:01:22

If school isn't exciting for themthey won't come to school

0216 10:13:01:22 10:13:04:11

and if it's not excitingthey won't work

0217 10:13:04:11 10:13:06:08

and they won't get engaged.

0218 10:13:06:08 10:13:08:19

(narrator) St John'sare rewarding attendance

0219 10:13:08:19 10:13:10:20

and engaging family support.

0220 10:13:10:20 10:13:13:11

We realise childrenonly get once chance in life.

0221 10:13:13:11 10:13:16:21

We've been privileged that parentshave trusted that chance to us

0222 10:13:16:21 10:13:19:08

and it's important,by working with the parents,

0223 10:13:19:08 10:13:21:09

the staff and the children together,

0224 10:13:21:09 10:13:25:07

that we actually ensure thateverybody achieves their potential.

0225 10:13:25:07 10:13:27:07

We're up for it!
