Geppetto works in a recycling plant in Nottingham, in the north of England. He feels very alone and is tired of living like that. However, one day he discovers a piece of wood, which he recycles and converts into his son, Pinocchio.

We join Pinocchio on his first day at school where he is being a bit naughty and is telling lies. This gives him a very big nose! We see Pinocchio struggling with what is right and wrong. Finally, he learns to be kind, to tell the truth and to help others.

In this modern musical recreation of Pinocchio, students learn how to recycle effectively; understand the importance of going to school; that listening to your parents is essential and that the best adventures are those we create ourselves through our imagination.

1) Worksheet 1: Flashcards of the characters and settings of the play

Characters: Pinocchio, Geppetto and Mrs.Brown.

Settings: Geppetto’s House, Recycling Plant, School.

The aim of the exercise is to learn the names and be familiar with the characters and some settings of the play. Use the Flashcards to introduce the characters, the settings and get familiar with the vocabulary of the play.

Characters: Get your students to colour in the pictures of Pinocchio, Geppetto and Mrs. Brown.

House: Get the children to colour in the pictures of Geppetto’s house. The students from Cicle Inicial can write down the parts of the house (kitchen, table, chair, tea pot, medal).

Recycle Plant: Ask all your students to colour the containers in blue, green, yellow and brown.

School objects: It’s Pinocchio’s first day at school and he thinks he has got everything he needs. However, he only has his book. What other objects does he need? Students should try to find some of the school objects in the word search.Children from C.I. can write the names of all the objects.

Pinocchio Goes To School Routine: To talk about Pinocchio’s routine, draw your students’ attention to the clocks. Children from Infantil can repeat the actions (waking up, having breakfast, going to school, etc.) using mime. Those from C.I. can repeat the time and corresponding actions, and label the clocks as well. For further vocabulary, you can play a game. Use the cards in Appendix 1 and have your students mime the actions described. The rest of the class has to guess the action. These cards can also be used for Pictionary instead of a mime game.

What do they already know?Ask your students of CI what they know about these characters. Who is Geppetto? Who is Pinocchio? What is Pinocchio made of? Is Pinocchio a good boy or a bit naughty? Explain that Mrs. Brown is Pinocchio’s teacher. You can also ask them to draw their own Pinocchio and create a Pinocchio with recycled materials in the class or at home.
