Dear Symphony of the Hills Family,
Welcome to the Symphony of the Hills’ 20th anniversary season! We have all been
through much, and we remain vigilant in the face of a persistent pandemic, but, buoyed
by your positive response, we were determined that a responsible version of our
season could be accomplished. We are blessed to be here with you tonight.
Our opening concert is entitled “Ode to Joy” in honor of the 250th anniversary of
Ludwig van Beethoven’s birth. Thus, the concert will include the Scherzo movement of
the Ninth Symphony as well as the famous “Ode to Joy” theme. It is our goal to present
the grand finale of Beethoven’s symphonic masterpiece alongside our Grand
Symphony Chorus and guest vocal soloists in the near future. In addition to the
Beethoven, this joyful concert will also feature heart-warming holiday favorites from
“Charlie Brown,” works by Leroy Anderson and Sergei Prokofiev, and a special
presentation of that Trans-Siberian Orchestra favorite, “Christmas Eve Sarajevo
12/24.”
It has not been simple, but we have been inspired by the encouragement we received
from you. You let us know that the Symphony of the Hills is truly a part of what you
value about life in the Hill Country. We are grateful to our musicians, board, staff, the
Cailloux Theater, the Kerrville First United Methodist Church, the Hill Country Youth
Orchestra, our concert sponsor, and you, our patrons and subscribers, whose common
desire for great symphonic music inspired us to safely pursue our art at this historic
concert.
In peace and thanksgiving for this time together,
Tim Gene

Concert I: Ode to Joy
Leroy Anderson: A Christmas Festival 6 m
Among the most familiar and beloved of American orchestral composers of the 20th century, Leroy Anderson (1908-
1975) first compiled this medley of 12 familiar Christmas melodies in 1952. They have been recorded by more
ensembles than one can imagine! In addition to composing scores of familiar orchestral tunes and arranging much more
material, Anderson was a linguist and an intelligence officer in both World War II and the Korean War.
Vincent Guaraldi (Pugh arr): A Charlie Brown Christmas 6 m
Jazz pianist and composer Vincent Guaraldi (1928-76) was contacted in 1965 by TV producer Les Mendelson about a
possible Christmas TV show featuring the characters from Peanuts. Mendelson had completed a documentary on Willie
Mays and then teamed with Charles Schulz for one on Peanuts (going, he said, from the best ballplayer to the worst—
Charlie Brown). Guaraldi’s memorable score, with its jazzy, funky and melancholy tunes, has captured the fancy of at
least two generations of listeners.
Sergei Prokofiev: “Troika” from Lieutenant Kije Suite 3 m
One of the great original composers of the 20th century, Sergei Prokofiev (1891-1953) demonstrated his musical genius
at an early age. He also demonstrated his independence from the formalism that he was taught by Reinhold Gliere and
at the St. Petersburg Conservatory. His first two piano concertos garnered both applause and expressions of horror from
various quarters. Prokofiev composed in many genres-- symphonies, ballets, chamber music, film scores, concertos and
opera. Lieutenant Kije, a farce satirizing Tsar Paul of the early 19th century, was his first film score, a popular success
from which a five-movement suite was extracted. The “Troika” piece captures the feeling of a ride on a three-horse
sleigh through a snowy Russian landscape.
O’Neill/Kinkel (Phillips/Megaw arr): Christmas Eve Sarajevo 3 m
The eclectic orchestral group Trans-Siberian Orchestra, created by Paul O’Neill, released this fusion of two Christmas
tunes in 1995. Late that fall the three-and-a-half-year siege of Sarajevo by Serbian forces had finally been lifted. From
lone cello to full orchestra, this intense work casts a distinct spell.

Ludwig van Beethoven: Symphony # 9, Scherzo and Ode 24 m
Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827), the 250th anniversary of whose birth we are observing this year, was the lion of
classical music. Beethoven is regarded as the musical bridge between the classical era of Haydn and Mozart and the
Romanticism of the 19th century. Indeed, it is said that his father taught him rigorously in the hope that he would be a
child prodigy like Mozart, and later Beethoven studied with Haydn. But his musical genius was slave to neither!
Beethoven composed nine symphonies, five piano concertos, 32 piano sonatas, two masses, a single opera, sixteen
string quartets and many other works in his career. Sadly, the deafness which was total in his last years began to come
on him before he was thirty, but it failed to stem his creative powers. As a symphonist, Beethoven is credited with
expanding the symphony’s size and orchestration, as well as its harmonics and the overall musical coherence of the
form. To listen to his symphonies in sequence, from the early first to the grand choral ninth, is to appreciate how
Beethoven expanded symphonic language.
In his final symphony, Beethoven could not be limited by even his broad instrumental array, and he added the human
voice. He drew on the poetry of Friedrich Schiller, slightly adapting a work from Schiller’s youth. The “Ode to Joy”
celebrates the spirit uniting all humans, a joy found in both Nature and in all relationships. Though the pandemic does
not permit us to present the choral conclusion, we celebrate the great work with its second (Scherzo) movement and
the orchestral introduction to the fourth (Ode to Joy) movement.
