Harmony OPC Server Overview

Is the ABB O.E.M. supported OPC interface to the Symphony/Harmony INFI 90 Distributed Control System. This is the recommended product to connect external host computer applications to the DCS.

Supports Symphony/Harmony INFI 90 DCS equipment (past/present).

HOPC is the evolution path for ‘stand alone’ Host Computer interfaces that were previously deployed with custom Harmony drivers (semAPI or CIU subroutine based).

Harmony OPC Server is in the ACTIVE lifecycle phase and is included in the ABB’s Automation Sentinel Program.

Compatible with - Windows 7 Enterprise and Server 2008 32/64 bit operating systems with the latest updates.

Is FULLY Certified - passed all mandatory tests within the OPC Foundation Compliance Test Tool (CTT) – Data Access 2.05a.

Harmony OPC Server Product Features

Provides secure, fast and efficient OPC connectivity between the ABB Harmony Distributed Control System (DCS) and OPC Clients.

Supports all Harmony Tag Types and Computer Interface Modules – tiered licensing - up to 30,000 Harmony tags.

Supports Distributed Component Object Model (DCOM) communication to allow for remote client connections from anywhere on the network.

Enables OPC Clients to subscribe to Harmony control system points providing read/write access in real time using the OPC Data Access custom interface.

Harmony OPC Server New Product Features in version 6.0

Support for the Remote Motor Control Block (FC 136).

Ability to set write security on a per tag basis to prevent clients from writing to a tag.

Full Tag licensing enhancement – each tag license supports subscriptions to any applicable tag.item.

Support for the PNI800 module.

Ability to throttle Remote Manual Set Constant and Remote Control Motor.

Addition of TRIGGER atom to BlockTune and BlockOutput tag types. The Trigger atom causes the HOPC server to immediately call the required ICI function then waits for the ICI to reply.

Benefit – This is a toggled feature that enhances HOPC’s performance with client applications that require exclusive or high performance use of the Read Block Output function.

Harmony OPC Server Features

Multiple Instances - up to four instances of the HOPC Server can be executed in a single computer.

Benefit – Reduces the hardware footprint (PC’s) required to support multiple DCS interfaces. Can reduce OPC client licensing requirements (depending on the client licensing scheme).

Enhanced redundancy - HOPC redundancy is fully achieved when using redundant ICI’s, redundant OPC Servers, redundant OPC Data Links, and third party OPC Servers servicing foreign devices.

Enable/Disable Exception Filtering (Screening) - enables/disables exception reports generated by changing data to be processed.

Benefit – To support regulatory guidelines which require a ‘guaranteed’ data update rate for process monitoring applications.

Harmony OPC Server 3rd Party – Process Historian Connection Example

Typical Host Computer interfaces to Symphony Harmony Systems are for Process Historian applications.

Generally Process Historians consist of an interface (scanner) computer connected to the DCS and a separate Historian server which acts as a central repository for process data from any number of systems.

The most common 3rd Party Process Historians are OSI PI and Aspentech IP.21.

Previously a ‘custom’ interface driver was developed by either the external vendor or ABB and utilized ABB’s semAPI software to communicate with the DCS.

An excellent evolution path is to utilize ABB’s latest interface product (IET800) and the Harmony OPC server.

Harmony OPC Server Why upgrade your Host Computer Interfaces?

Many Host Computer interfaces are using PC Hardware and Software that is no longer supported (i.e. Windows NT). You cannot replace a failed computer without a significant software upgrade.

Evolve from older interface technologies (RS-232 and SCSI) to ethernet. SCSI technology is VERY hard to support as many manufacturers no longer support their SCSI products (i.e. PCI interface cards and SCSI extenders)

Eliminate the need for ‘custom’/proprietary interface drivers from 3rd party vendors. It’s always wise to use O.E.M. software on your DCS systems.

Improve Host Computer interface performance using OPC and ethernet interfaces to your DCS.
