The Episcopal Diocese of East Carolina

The Right Reverend Peter James Lee, Bishop Provisional Summer 2013 To the Episcopal Churchwomen of the Diocese of East Carolina Dear Friends in Christ, In the 25 years that I was Bishop of Virginia, I found that the Episcopal Churchwomen were among the most vibrant supporters of mission and ministry in the diocese. That sense of appreciation was reinforced here in East Carolina when I met in May with the Episcopal Churchwomen of this diocese in their spring program at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Oriental. One of the great strengths of the Episcopal Churchwomen is your sense of community – bringing people of diverse backgrounds together in a shared commitment to the mission of Christ. I want you to know of my appreciation for the continuity and generosity of your ministry. May God continue to bless you in your witness. Faithfully yours, The Rt. Rev. Peter James Lee Bishop Provisional

President’s Message

O ur Vision, Mission, and Goals

ECW works in the world...

ECW cares..

ECW prays..

I am excited to be your new president and your ECW Board is excited to embark upon our challenge of reinvigorating the Episcopal Church Women organization in our diocese. The National ECW has used a theme for this triennium that I am going to borrow -- "Stir Up The Spirit!" That's a great description of what we want to do. We want to reach out and work closely with the parishes, whether there is an organized ECW or not, to offer help identifying ways to form or improve the organization of women within the parish. Is it time to explore new forms of leadership or to "tweak" the overall purpose of a parish ECW organization? Maybe it's time for new ventures, new challenges, and perhaps new ways to care and to touch the hearts of all who need to be touched. We need to ask the Holy Spirit to guide us in the renewal and mission of the ECW -- and we need to keep our hearts and minds open in order to hear what the Spirit is saying. So, please join me as we charge ahead and "Stir Up The Spirit!" Ginger Jacocks President, Diocese ECW (252) 393-8083 [email protected]

Vision We are Episcopal Church Women, committed to one another and called to witness for Christ. Our challenge is to provide a safe place where every woman is free to become the person Christ called her to be. We are called. We are different. We are one body. Diocesan ECW Mission To make our vision a reality, the Episcopal Church Women of East Carolina must engage, mobilize, and support the women of our diocese to ensure we all have the means to go out into the world rejoicing in the power of the spirit and serving the Lord. Diocesan ECW Goals

• To strengthen lines of communication through our Diocesan • To encourage familiarity with and participation in programs

offered to women of the Episcopal Church on a parish, diocesan, provincial, and national level

• To provide scholarships to support education and for women and children in need

• To reach out to all those in need • To present knowledgeable speakers and event leaders to

guide our efforts in reaching our vision • To actively volunteer ourselves in such a manner that our

vision becomes a reality

About Our Ministries…

United Thank Offering Thanks be to God for the United Thank Offering! For almost 120 years the UTO has been awarding grants of love which changes lives. Each year our diocese collection is sent to the National UTO and every penny is used for grants, divided around 50% for domestic missions and 50% for foreign missions. Your prayers and offerings have helped build churches and schools, fed the hungry, clothed the poor and provided shelter for the homeless. In May, 2013, St. Peter’s, Washington received a $41,500 UTO grant for Ruth’s House. UTO is a way for each person to express thanks to God for all the blessings in everyday life: our food, our clothing, our families, our friends, our churches, the list goes on. Please make sure your parish has a UTO coordinator who will oversee an ingathering twice a year even if you don’t have an official ECW group. Most materials including Blue Boxes and envelopes can be ordered from the national UTO office in New York free of charge by calling 1-800-334-7626 ext. 5130 or on line at www.utochange.org.

God gave you the gift of 86,000 seconds today, have you

used one to say “thank you”? William A. Ward

Thanking you in advance for your continued support of UTO. Annie Jacobs, UTO Coordinator 408 Bobby Jones Road, Wilmington, NC 28412 [email protected] (910) 796-0827

NATIONAL  UTO  MEMORIAL  AND  GIFT  TRUST  FUND

This is a National UTO Fund consisting of money donated as special gifts or contributions, memorials to family and friends, in thanksgiving for blessings, as holiday or birthday gifts, or as a special remembrance for others. Checks should be made out to “The Domestic and Foreign Missionary Society ECUSA.” A UTO Book of Remembrance holds the names of those honored as well as those who honor them. The book is kept at the National Church Center and displayed at each ECW Triennial Meeting. The earnings from this fund are used to provide materials to Diocesan and Parish UTO Coordinators.

To Apply for a UTO Grant

• Information can be found on line at www.utochange.org • Application forms are provided on line. • A grant screening committee reviews and makes recommendations to the

Bishop who will submit two projects: ONE grant application may be submitted for use within the diocese: ONE application with its Companion Diocese. These are submitted to Province IV and National for funding.

• Grants are awarded in the spring.

Church Periodical Club The purpose of the Church Periodical Club is to spread the written word throughout the world. This ministry remains the same as when it was first organized more than 120 years ago, in 1888, by Mary Ann Fargo. Mrs. Fargo was the wife of Mortimer Fargo, a founder of the famed Wells-Fargo stage coach lines and a member of the Church of the Holy Communion in New York City. She and her friends sent Bibles to the West on Wells- Fargo stage coaches. Since those early beginnings, CPC has provided educational, spiritual, and liturgical resources to many communities within our nation and around the world. . It is the only organization in the Episcopal Church dedicated solely to providing free literature and related materials, both religious and secular, to people all over the world who need and request them and who have no other source for obtaining them. Prayer Books, books for seminarians, educational materials, medical textbooks, agricultural manuals and books for those in local and global mission are some of the publications The Church Periodical Club supplies. Today this agency also provides funds for audio and video tapes, as well as computer software. CPC is supported solely through voluntary donations. Gifts from parishes, clergy, individuals, vestries and ECW’s keep this important ministry alive. The primary source of these funds is raised in churches on CPC Collection Sunday, which is officially the first Sunday in May. Another date may be chosen if it is better suited to the individual parish and their priest. Some parishes receive CPC collection at each ECW meeting. In addition to providing funds for use around the world, part of the money collected locally is for textbook grants to seminarians from our diocese. Each parish in our diocese was contacted and asked to make a donation. At the February 2014 Diocesan Convention, three seminarians each received $600 in grant money. Let’s continue to support Christ’s command: “Go, ye, therefore, and teach all nations…”

CPC Prayer

Bless O Lord, The Church Periodical Club, that it may be an instrument for the spread of your Word throughout the world. Grant to its officers wisdom and patience, to its members perseverance and the spirit of sharing that asks no return. Bring more to take part in its mission and ministry. Bless our gifts and those who receive them, to the enrichment of individual lives, that we all may be servants of the risen Lord. Amen. Patti Dill, Church Periodical Club Coordinator

Mission and Outreach The Episcopal Church Women are all about mission and ministry – that is what we do. We see what needs to be done in our parishes, our diocese, and far beyond. That is why we continue to support the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), particularly #3, “to promote gender equality and empower women.” So let us all continue to COMMUNICATE with each other and to PRAY always for HIS guidance and blessing in all of our endeavors. Jesus said: “in as much as ye have done it unto one of the least of my brethren, ye have done it unto me.” Nina Silverthorne, Mission and Outreach Chair ECW helps others…

Scholarship Project for our Companion Diocese in the Dominican Republic The Episcopal Church Women was asked a couple years ago to coordinate the scholarship program for the children of the Dominican Republic; this is an ongoing project for us.

• It costs $350 to send a child to school for one year. • The Episcopal Schools provide hope for those living in poverty, but must be self-supporting; the goal is

to provide a quality education. All monies collected for this effort by our parishes and ECWs should be sent to the Diocese ECW.

• Make checks payable to “ECW – Dio. Of East Carolina;” in the memo section state “DR Scholarship” • Send to: Claudia Sulloway, 577 Robin Rd, Morehead City, NC 28557

If you have any questions about the companion diocese relationship or the scholarship program, please contact Jo Anne Kilday at (252) 393-6343 or [email protected]. ECW Memor ia l Fund and Fund Scholarsh ip…

The purpose of the Memorial Fund is to provide funds for the training of young women for religious

education. This fund was established in 1939 to receive gifts of money in memory of deceased Episcopal Church Women. Gifts may be made at the time of death or anytime thereafter by individuals or parishes. The name of the deceased with a minimum memorial gift of $5.00 should be sent to the ECW Treasurer (see page 14 for address). This is usually done when the names are sent to the Book of Remembrance Custodian (see page 26). If it is the desire of the donor that the next of kin be notified of the gift, the name of the deceased and the name and address of the next of kin should be sent to the ECW Treasurer along with the gift. Scholarships are funded from the interest earned on the Memorial Fund Account and an amount to be determined by the executive board so that the value of the scholarship is no less than $500 and the principal of the Memorial Fund Account remains at least $15,000.00. The scholarship may be applied for by email or mail to the ECW President (see page 14 for address). The ECW President, based on recommendations from a president-appointed committee of three if there is more than one applicant, makes scholarship decisions.

Section  3.    The  delegates-‐at-‐large  will  be  elected  by  the  Executive  Board,  with  each  elected  member  voting  for  two  of  the  nominees.    The  two  individuals  receiving  the  most  votes  shall  be  delegates-‐at-‐large;  the  two  remaining  individuals  will  be  alternates  and  shall  attend  Triennial  in  lieu  of  delegates  according  to  the  majority  of  the  votes  received.

B. Reimbursement  for  lodging  will  be  based  on  double-‐occupancy.    Each  delegate  will  only  be  reimbursed  for  half  the  total  cost  of  the  room.

C. Ground  travel  by  private  automobile  will  be  reimbursed  at  the  current  federal  rate  for  charities.

D. Book of Remembrance

“Then they that loved the Lord spoke often one to another, and the Lord hearkened and heard it and a Book of Remembrance was written before Him for them that loved the Lord, and that thought upon his name.” Malachi 3:16 In 1940, the Book of Remembrance was compiled from lists begun in 1888 as a memorial to women of the Diocese. The book is bound in purple leather and decorated with a gold cross. In 1983 a new book of red leather was purchased. There is a section in the book for each parish and mission and in those sections are inscribed the full names and date of birth and death of those who have passed on to the Larger Life of service within the past year (January 1 – December 31). Include husband’s name or initials in parentheses, if applicable. Please send this information to the Custodian, Betty Cochran, 402 Oak Drive, Washington, NC 27889, (252) 946-3531, or [email protected]. This information is normally sent at the same time that a monetary gift is sent to the Memorial Fund in memory of the individual (see page 8). Each year at the Annual Meeting the names of those who have died within the past year (January 1 – December 31) will be read in memoriam.

Meditations Provided  by  The  Rev.  Lynn  Peterman  for  our  2003-‐04  Handbook

Meditation One

Ephesians 4:4-7 there is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling. One Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all. But each of us is given grace according to the measure of Christ’s gift… 4:12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ. How do we prepare ourselves for the ministry of Christ? What gifts do we have to equip ourselves for the mission of reconciliation? Many times God works best through our weaknesses. We use our strengths with confidence, but God can use our weaknesses with great confidence too. Helen Keller once said, “I thank God for my handicaps; for through them I have found myself, my work, my God.” In our weakness or fear we have to rely on something outside of ourselves and we turn to God to give us strength. One of my fears is standing in front of a group of people to preach, teach, or give a talk. This fear is not of the crowd but stems from my weakness in speech. Many times I just can’t find the right words to say – they just don’t seem to come out when I want them to. I go away from conversations thinking I wish I would have said such and such, or why didn’t I say something? But my weakness has brought me closer to God because not only do I desperately depend on God for words on so many occasions but I have discovered many other ways to communicate Christ’s love and reconciliation to others; a smile, a touch, a note, a call, a prayer, or faithful listening. I recognize that God equips us for ministry through our weaknesses, too. So when we look for our gifts for ministry, it is important to examine not only our strengths, but our self- perceived weaknesses as well; because all can be used for God’s purpose to build up the body of Christ.

Meditation Two

Acts 20:24 But I do not count my life of any value to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus; to testify to the good news of God’s grace. It is amazing that God has chosen us to continue in God’s mission in the world and sent Jesus Christ to show us how. St. Paul, after having met the risen Lord, knew that the true value of his life was in continuing the Lord’s ministry. For St. Paul it was as a preacher and teacher. Sometimes it is hard to know what our mission in life is, isn’t it? One way to begin to sort through all the potential paths toward serving God is to spend some quiet time with God, not only listening for guidance, but receiving God’s strength and love. For some of us it is hard to stop, sit still and listen – and that includes me. I am one of those people who love to have a project in the works all the time. I especially enjoy working with my hands; in the garden, quilting, cleaning the house. Over time I found that the repetition of weeding, cleaning, sewing was quite meditative. My hands were busy but my mind felt free and available to God. My project time has become a time when my mind is free to listen to God; it has become a sacred, intentional time to be with God – a time when the Holy Spirit has room to move my mind and heart to a new place. During this quiet time with God, sometimes a person’s name comes to me,

28

sometimes I find myself being held accountable for my actions, other times I feel restored and my creativity is rejuvenated, and always, I feel loved and cared for by God. I have learned that there are many ways to listen for God’s direction, and that God is not partial to one particular style. Whatever our style of listening for and to God, I believe that God is blessed by our willingness to share in God’s mission – the journey to continue God’s purpose of reconciliation in the world. And so I leave you with a wonderful prayer by Ted Loder on listening: Help Me Listen by Ted Loder O  Holy  One,  I  hear  and  say  so  many  words,  Yet  yours  is  the  word  I  need.  Speak  now,  And  help  me  listen;  and,  if  what  I  hear  is  silence,            let  it  quiet  me,                      let  it  disturb  me,                                let  it  touch  my  need,                                          let  it  break  my  pride,                                                    let  it  shrink  my  certainties,                                                              let  it  enlarge  my  wonder.

Meditation Three

2 Timothy 4:4 Do not turn away from listening to the truth and wandering away to myths. It is easy to slowly get distracted from listening for the truth. I know that I can get caught up in the details of day to day life and lose focus of my mission and ministry; for which I was created. I can temporarily get off trace from the truth that I am a child of Christ first and that is my true identity – yours too. I believe that the wisest words I have ever been given for ministry are “people first.” Ministry is about relationships, first with God and then with one another. Christ gives us two simple commandments about love – love God and love one another, if we have spent our lives investing in the laws of love, we have listened to the truth. I will end by reminding you of the biggest truth of all:

GOD LOVES YOU GOD LOVES YOU GOD LOVES YOU

“Accustom  yourself  to  the  wonderful  thought  that  God  loves  you  with  a  tenderness,  a  generosity,  and  an  intimacy  which  surpasses  all  your  dreams.    Give  yourself  up  with  joy  to  a  loving  confidence  in  God  and  have  courage  to  believe  firmly  that  God’s  action  towards  you  is  a  masterpiece  of  partiality  and  love…    Rejoice  that  you  are  what  you  are;  for  our  Lord  loves  you  very  dearly.    He  loves  the  whole  of  you,  just  as  you  are.”

Abbe  de  Tourville,  Letters  of  Direction

Two Great Prayers from the Iona Community

(From:  50  Prayers  from  the  Iona  Community,  Compiled  by  Neil  Paynter,  2009)

Today Today may I give and receive love. Today may I work for justice. Today may I listen and pray. Today may I sing God’s praises. Today may I delight in God’s beauty. Today and every day.

 By: Ruth Burgess

New Ways God of our lives you are always calling us to follow you into the future, inviting us to new ventures, new challenges, new ways to care, new ways to touch the hearts of all. When we become fearful of the unknown, give us courage. When we worry that we are not up to the task, remind us that you would not call us if you did not believe in us. When we get tired, or feel disappointed with the way things are going, remind us that you can bring change and hope out of the most difficult situations. By: Kathy Galloway

PRAYERS

GUIDANCE

O God, by whom the meek are guided in judgment, and light rises up in darkness for the godly: Grant us, in all our doubts and uncertainties, the grace to ask what You would have us do, that the Spirit of wisdom may save us from all false choices, and that in Your light we may see light, and in Your straight path may not stumble; through Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN. UNITED THANK OFFERING

O God, who art the hope of all peoples everywhere, we thank Thee for the outpourings of love and generosity which have enabled us to respond to some of the world’s needs in places for and near; guide us as we face changing times and new frontiers, keep our hearts thankful and our vision clear as we work to fulfill our vocations and ministry as members of the body of Thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN.

A CALL TO COMMON MISSION

Gracious God, we know there is always too much work to be done, too little time to do it, and too few people to get it done. We know that mission often gets more talk than action. But we also know that joy and power can be found in the companionship and creation into which you invite us. May we, through our prayers and plans and programs, pursue the possibilities you set before us in our call to common mission. AMEN.

A PRAYER FOR WOMEN Almighty and eternal God, so draw our hearts to you, so guide our minds, so fill our imaginations, so control our wills, that we may be wholly yours, utterly dedicated to you, and then use us, we pray, as you will, and always to your glory and the welfare of your people, through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. AMEN. MISSION AND OUTREACH

Send us, O God, as your messengers to hearts without a home, to lives without love, to the crowds without a guide. Send us to the children whom none have blessed, to the famished whom none have visited, to the fallen whom none have lifted, to the bereaved whom none have comforted. Keep our sympathies and insight ready, our wills keen, our hands quick to help our sisters and brothers in their need; for Christ’s sake. AMEN. CLOSING PRAYER

Our Father, we dedicate this work we have before us to you with our minds and hearts. Give us the grace, O Father, to seek only your will with our minds, and only your loving service with our hearts. Make clear to each one of us her part in the task. So may our labor for you be not a burden, but a blessing, joy, and ever pleasing to you, through Jesus Christ we ask this. AMEN.
