Awards Night 25th March 2011

The Worcester Golf and Country Club put on an excellent dinner forthe Club’s awards night on 25th March. This was probably helped by thepresence of the Golf Club captain Julian Gadd and next year’s captain PhilMacDonell. The Chairman, Pete Wood, welcomed everyone and in his speech he brieflyoutlined some of the changes that will take place this year to some of thechampionships in order to generate more interest. The main one being thepresentation of a voucher to the winners of the Road Rally Championship of a50% reduction on the entry in the Club’s Woodpecker Stages Rally in 2012. Ifthe two winners are in the same car then they will get a completely free entryworth around £300. He also announced a new championship for Historic cars. There were several new names on the major trophies and also some surprisedfaces when a few were announced. The raffle and auction raised over £100 forthe Air Ambulance, with Matt Pearce paying quite a high price for the Mk IIEscort poster, outbidding Alan Corns. (He wanted to see what a straight onelooked like !) Pete had some difficulty reading out the award winner’s names as he couldnot read Anthony Stoneman’s writing (written in Welsh!), causing someamusement. The major award winners were :-

Top Driver (Noddy Watkins Trophy) Ben WilliamsStage Rally Driver (H W Ward cup) Paul DaveyStage Rally Co-driver (H & F Rose bowl) Roger AllenBest newcomer Stage Rally Championship Alice WilliamsRoad Rally Driver (Kilbourne Kay cup) Frank BurtonRoad Rally Navigator (Sinwat Cup) Dood PearceOff- Road Championship Andy WooldridgeLadies Championship (Alice Steel Cup) Jenny GaddBest on Welsh events (Ceredigion Cup) Paul DaveyBest Service Crew (Silver Spanner) Alan WarburtonBest magazine article (Sixty Minutes trophy) Dood PearceServices to the Club (All brakes Cup) Roger AllenMarshalls Championship Jeremy HancockBroken Piston award (biggest Cock-up) Paul Davey

To say this was a “production” car trial was a bit of an exaggeration as notmany complied with the definition “production”. Seats, trim, spare wheels etcseemed to be missing in a number of vehicles. Even passengers were omitted attimes! However this didn’t stop an excellent days sport. Six interesting tests were laid out each being attempted twice, and the weatherwas warm and dry. With the lack of rain over the previous month it was expectedto be difficult to stop competitors cleaning the tests, but the lush grass soon provedthat this was not the case. Test 1 soon caught out a few with only five cars clean on the first run. By theend of test 2 only Andy Wooldridge and Dood Pearce were still clean with PaulinePearce in 3rd place on 4 penalties. All three were using borrowed cars. Andy wasdriving his wife’s Ka and Dood and Pauline were using Pete Dodschun’s Mini. After test 2 Geoff Wooldridge decided to retire his People Carrier as it was toolarge to get around the corners, although he did clean the first test twice. AnthonyStoneman, who was also driving a borrowed Ka, failed to negotiate the same cornerand collected two 8’s. Simon Jones took the wrong line and failed at the same place. Nobody cleaned the third test and Andy Wooldridge collected a 6 when hedrove out of the test by mistake. This put Dood into the lead on a total of 5, withAndy on 9 and Pauline on 11. The start of this test was steeply down hill and MattHarker (Fiesta) decided to roll down the first part out of gear. Unfortunately whenhe needed to accelerate the car came to a stop and he collected a 10. The fourth test was to prove crucial when Dood and Pauline both failed toovercome the first uphill section allowing Andy to pull in front by one mark. PaulRichards was the only car to clean it and this pulled him up into third place. The final test was an altered version of test 3, the steep downhill start, and itcaused quite a discussion at the finish. Some competitors didn’t walk the test andone drove out the side in error. The Clerk of the Course then made the controversialdecision to scrub the penalties on this test. It only affected 3rd and fourth places sono one protested. An excellent days sport.Results1. LONG-TERM SUPPORT FOR BARBADOS HISTORIC RALLYCARNIVAL

The first Historic Rally Carnival held in Barbados last year hasgenerated immense international exposure for the motorsport-madisland and event organisers are already preparing for larger nationaland international entries this year. The organisers' 2010 change - from modern to historic rallying format- for the ten-year-old event brings affordable motor sport into thewell-established, two-week Rally Carnival cocktail of fun under theCaribbean sun.It has already caused a stir among the worldwide historic rallyingcommunity, as yet another international rally has made the move tohistorics to keep clubmen at the sharp end of the results. The event runsin July and is topped and tailed by a rallysprint and an asphalt rallyrespectively. The Barbados Tourism Authority (BTA) is the national body dedicatedto furthering tourism generally, and sports-tourism in particular, on thesports-crazy coral island. A significantly high proportion ofBarbadians are motoring and motorsport aficionados and the necessarymotorsport infrastructure has existed there for decades. The BTA's interest in growing and developing the Barbados HistoricRally Carnival as a brand has developed naturally over the past tenyears, resulting in a highly positive move by the BTA to enter into athree-year agreement to support the promoter's marketing efforts.Rally Carnival creator Greg Cozier had this to say: "There are manytropical destinations that can provide visitors with 'sun, sea and sand';Barbados' human resources and infrastructure make it uniquelypositioned to provide all that, as well as world-class sporting eventslike the Historic Rally Carnival.

"The BTA have supported us since the second year of the BRC in 2002;it is not an overstatement to say that we couldn't have done it withoutthem. This three-year deal allows us to make firm commitments toprivate sector sponsors and go into our second decade with confidenceto grow the event."More information on: www.barbadosrallycarnival.com.
