STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES INDEPENDENCE COMMUNITY COLLEGE
Block Party
For the opening of the fall semester, the city of Independence hosted a block party to welcome incoming students. Various businesses donated time, effort, and supplies to the students that attended. Booths lined “Main Street” telling of the many great things to do in Independence. A tour was also given of the many businesses around town, so students could be familiar with it. Jacob Hogge
Popcorn!
On August 23rd, 2018, in the Tutoring Center
the Mentoring Program popped popcorn for
ICC students. We had different toppings like
M&M’s, Gummy lifesavers, Carmel bits,
Reese's, and popcorn seasonings. This was to
promote the TRIO Support Services program.
It was enjoyed by all!

October and November are home to two of the major holidays in the United States. Halloween is the
second largest consumer holiday, only beaten by Christmas, with the average adult spending $75 dollars
on candy, decorations, and costumes each year and an estimated $8 billion total nationwide. The famous
escape artist Harry Houdini had issues with Halloween as his performances on this day ended in failure
and he died on Halloween. While Harry Houdini died in October, there are many famous celebrities born
in November, like Mark Twain, Winston Churchill, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Scarlett Johansson.
November is also the birth month of the most serial killers including Ted Bundy who was born on
November 24, 1946. Another major holiday in November aside from Thanksgiving is Dia de Muertos, or
Day of the Dead, in Mexico, lasting from October 31 to November 2.

STEM Project- Ice Cream with David
David, SSS Math/Science Specialist and some tutors made ice cream to show students a chemical reaction.
In this experiment we put ice cream salt, vanilla extract, half and half, and sugar into Ziploc bag. Then we
put ice cream salt into another bag and shook for 5 to 10 minutes until we got ice cream consistency. The
students got to see the reaction and enjoy the ice cream!

SSS Mentoring, part of the Student Support Services (SSS) program, has been revised. The goal of the
project has been to help all students acclimate themselves into campus life, find resources, share interests,
and build a connection with the local community. It is an opportunity for all freshmen to get to know some
sophomore students and make the adjustment easier during their first year at ICC. Mentoring is also a great
way for international students to get to know the local culture. We want everyone to get involved in campus
life and to have a good experience while attending ICC.
The mentors are here to help you succeed in college and guide you when you step onto campus your first year. They are students, staff, and faculty and they invite all ICC students to join them in this project. If you would like more information, please visit the Tutoring Center located on the lower level of the Academic Building or email [email protected]. Upcoming SSS Chats: by Li Zhang

Meetings are held in the ICC Library at 2 pm.
The SSS program took a campus visit to Wichita State University on September 20th. Four students participated in the visit. The ICC students attended a presentation by Neal Hoelting, Community College Coordinator, and Justin Petersen, Transfer specialist. They then listened to a student panel from the WSU Trio representatives and learned more about the SSS program. The students had lunch in the Shocker Hall which is a dining hall at Wichita State University. The next campus visit will be to Kansas State University on 9/26/18. Victoria Mikkelsen
The Mentor Program was very active this past month of September. Rebecca hosted SSS chats with 5 to 8 students to offer support and as regular check-ins on how their semester is going. Students were also en-couraged to attend football and volleyball games as activities. On September 17th, the mentor program set up a table for Constitution Day in collaboration with the library and Anita from Institutional Research. They handed out copies for students to read and encouraged them to attend the Living Room Conversations and note-taking seminars. Many have said they have enjoyed the new insight they have experienced. More events to come this semester!
