Today’s stylish outdoor furnituredesigns may require a double-take to recognize that they are

not meant for indoor-living luxury.

Furniture designers have worked hardto satisfy consumers’ appetites forelegant outdoor pieces that go beyondthe garden bench. Now, the industry

is responding to the environmentallyconscious desire to maintain stunningdesigns in sustainable outdoor furni-ture.

The 2013 Green Home FurnishingsStudy conducted by the SustainableFurnishings Council found that 45.2percent of respondents said they were“definitely interested” in buying greenhome furnishings if they liked the styleand the cost was comparable to otheroptions. A total of 84.6 percent of re-spondents said they were at least “possibly interested.”

The council’s executive director, Susan

Inglis, says that green comes in manydifferent shades for eco-friendlyfurniture. “Sustainability is a triple-bottom line,” Inglis says. “It’s aboutwhat’s good for ecosystems on ourplanet, what’s good for communities, and what’s good for economies.”

Indeed, sustainability deals with many

material and social concerns includ-ing, conservation, landfills and socialequity.

When environmental concerns grew among the public in the 1980s,recycling became the prime effort toprotect the environment. This move-ment brought about an excess of high-density polyethylene recycledplastic in the form of milk jugs andother containers.

In 1990, owners of Syracuse, Ind.-based Poly-Wood, discovered an innovative use for recycled milk jugsby extruding them into plastic lumber

for outdoor furniture. The company’sfirst-ever design, an Adirondack chairmade of the recycled plastic, was a hitand continues as a best-seller for thecompany, says vice president BradyMaller. “We find a lot of opportunityto get really beautiful shapes,” Mallersays of the design process with HDPE.Further, HDPE doesn’t bend like otherplastics and is impervious to nearly alltypes of weather conditions.

Maller likes to talk about the “genera-tional” quality of Poly-Wood furniture. At the end of its useful life, the prod-uct, made from recyclable material, is a recyclable product itself, Maller says.

Loll Designs, a sustainable outdoor furniture manufacturer in Duluth,Minn., also got its start with an Adirondack chair. Founders Greg Benson, Dave Benson and Tony Ciardelli conceived Loll as a way to repurpose the excess recycled 100-percent recycled and recyclable HDPE used by their original company,TrueRide, which designed and builtskateboard parks. Furniture pieceswere nested into the same sheets ofHDPE used to produce skate-park

components. Three years of prototyp-ing went into the first Loll Adirondackbefore it launched at retail in 2006. Loll now produces a range of outdoorfurniture, including chairs, benches, tables and other accessories, madefrom the same recycled material, sourced primarily from milk jug containers.

“We believe by using 100-percent recycled and recyclable material weare supporting and promoting eco-initiatives/principals that we share andstrive for, including reuse, recycle, andsupporting USA-sourced and USA-madeproducts,” says founder Greg Benson.“Our products keep material out of thelandfill and also reduce the amount ofnew plastic being made.”

For every pound of weight in a Lollchair, approximately eight recycledmilk jugs are being reclaimed. Thecompany estimates that it has repur-posed more than 35 million recycledjugs in its furniture since 2005.

The milk-jug provenance, however, belies HDPE’s sturdiness.

“Our material is also very heavy,” Benson says. “The average weight of an Adirondack chair is approximately50 pounds so your furniture will notblow around.”

Loll's BBO2 collection has been named among Time magazine’s Top 100 Green Products

and won Garden Design’s Green Award. Here, the BB02 table, in leaf, and chairs, in sky.

Marsala and Coral Reef might be the ‘it’

colors for the year, but when it comes to

buying furniture, accessories, appliances

and paint, Renaissance, blue and bright

Pantone an-nouncedMarsala, a

robust and earthywine red hue, as its 2015

Color of the Year. Sherwin-Williamsselected Coral Reef, a mix of pink, orange and red that channels floralcomponents for an airy, springtimefeel.

However, there are three hotcolor themes for 2015: Renaissance, pastel and bright retro.

In addition to the paint com-pany’s choices, these color palettes are worth considering, too, whetherit’s for paint, fabric or furnishings.

Warmer and muddier colors, like you would see in an old Renais-sance painting, include olive green, rust, plum and beiges and complementMarsala as good accent colors, saysTexas-based designer Leslie HendrixWood, owner of Leslie Hendrix Wood Interiors and her blog hadleycourt.com.

For a Renaissance color, shesuggests Behr’s Your Majesty, whichpairs well with Behr’s Essential Teal.Designers and style spotters also havebeen watching blues, ranging fromcoastal blue to navy and even blue-black tones, says Kerrie Kelly, author, interior designer and owner of Kerrie Kelly Design Lab in northernCalifornia.

Navy doesn’t just work on thewalls. It’s being used in countertopsand cabinetry, she says. It can standalone to create an air of sophisticationor drama or blend with brighter hues,

metals and fabrics.“Navy blue is a hot one for

us, especially when it’s paired withMarsala or Coral Reef,” she says. “Navyblue is such a classic, it really feathersinto any interior.”

Designers also are seeing a lotof gray and more black. But Kelly likesnavy so well she predicts it will be thecolor of the decade.

“There’s kind of an evolvingmove towards black,” she says. “Navyblue can transition us there.”

Kelly also predicts tones ofblue azure and coastal blue will behot. Think saturated, beach-y colors –the deep blue sky on a clear day or thejewel-toned waters of the Caribbean. She also recommends olive green, pinkpeony or coral.

“We’re looking for a little lightand a little playfulness in our palettes,”she says.

Besides renewed consumerconfidence, architect and designerRose Dostal of RMD Designs, LLC, at-tributes the brighter colors to an agingpopulation and believes they will stayaround.

Dostal also saw a lot of bluesat the Las Vegas Market and says or-ange is another color that keeps com-ing back.

“Our eyes have to deal withall these issues, we need cognitivestimulation,” she says. “I’m one of thebaby boomers and I tend to gravitatetowards brighter colors or high con-trast like black and white.”

On the other end of the spec-trum, there are cooler tones, very soft

Finally, bright, bold colorsreflective of retro 1960s shades andsaturated pastels will come on thescene.

Tony Catanzaro is a 30 yearlandscape industry veteran andholds a degree in Landscape

Management/ Design

It is very easy to start off on the wrongfoot when planning your landscapeproject. You stop in at the nursery orgarden center and see all those won-derful choices. All the color, texture, and blooms can be intoxicating. Youhastily make impulse purchases basedon what catches your eye. You bring it home and plant it. Somehow it doesnot look right. You like the plants allright but what’s wrong? Further downthe road many of your plants are strug-gling for survival and others quicklyoutgrowing their location. This hap-pens with homeowners as well as with some landscape contractors.

There is a method to invoke to avoidmany of these problems. That is theprocess of planning and design. A design, whether done by you or a professional, is important in helpingyou make important decisions aboutwhat you want and of course plant selection. So how can a design help in plant selection? When a design isdrawn to scale it helps establish thespace you have for walkways, patios, furniture, and yes plants. In this designyour walks, patios, lawn areas, etc. willhelp you establish and develop plant-ing bed spaces. Once you have theseplanting spaces established you canstart making decisions about what youwant to accomplish in the designedspaces. Maybe you need a low ever-green hedge under the windows. Ormaybe you need privacy. Maybe it’s acolorful flower show. The point is thisstarts you on the selection path.

What happens next takes a little effortfor the homeowner or you can hire aprofessional to help you. Research horticulture books about the plantsthat fit your needs. Many books arewritten for this and there are web sitesas well that can be very helpful. Make

sure you note how big the mature sizeis. Will it be able to grow comfortablyfor at least 10-15 years in your location?Does the soil and sun/shade require-ment match your location? If not keeplooking! When you find a plant thatworks mark it on the plan. Create a circle to show it at 10-15 years growthand label it. It is also agood idea to have one or two alternatives incase your first choice is not available.

Continue the processuntil you complete all of your spaces. Remem-ber to consider texture, fragrance, color, bloom timing, fallcolor, winter interest, deer resistance, exposure, soil, drainage, the existingplantings, the architecture of the build-ing, and any other of countless factors. As you work through this you will findthe plants will “choose themselves”through the sight’s and the design’sneeds. As an industry professional I usethis process for planning and designingevery project from simple foundationplantings to elaborate gardens.

Before you go to purchase your plants, layout and prepare your planting beds.Pre mark your plant locations. Now youare ready for plants. Go to the nurseryor garden center. Bring your plan andplant list. Buy with confidence that you know what you are buying, whereit belongs and what it will do. This is agreat deal different than “impulse buy-ing” your landscape.

I know this must sound like a lot oftime and effort and it is. Unless youhave a passion for gardening and a lotof time you may consider hiring a professional to design and install yourlandscape project. I would still recom-mend being involved in the process so the new project reflects your needsand tastes and does not become just another “cookie cutter” design that isthe same up and down your block.

Every room should have all three types oflighting: Overhead, task and ambient.

CTW Features

One overhead light source is never enough;

it creates shadows in the corners.

The main overhead light in every room

should work on a dimmer. Wire lamps to

work on a switch so you can easily turn them

on/off when you enter or exit.

Install lights that work on a

sensor and activate when you

walk by or wave your hand in

front of them. You can put them

along a baseboard or above a

kitchen sink. A wave light

switch allows for messy hands

or even those with limited

mobility or reach (arthritis

or children) to activate.

Stairways need to be well-lit at

the top and bottom to prevent trips and falls.

Lighting styles depend on personal prefer-

ence and the overall look of the room.

A good lamp is an investment that matters.

Lamps are the jewelry of a room. Buy beauti-

ful and buy quality lamps. They last forever.

Position lamps in a triangle. For example, two

lamps on either side of the sofa and a floor

lamp opposite.

The eye always goes where the light is, so

lamps should be spread out near the corners

of the room and illuminate at or below eye

level.

Lighting affects how colors look in a room so

choose your light bulbs carefully. Halogen

lighting is the whitest, but it gives off heat.

Avoid fluorescent because it casts a cold,

sickly tone. LED is a bright light and energy

efficient, but it doesn’t have the spread.

All kitchens need lighting

under cabinets and over sinks,

stoves and work areas; pendant

lighting works well over bars,

islands and dining tables.

Bathrooms should have a main

overhead, wall sconces beside

the medicine cabinet or mirror

and every tub or shower should

have a light.

Don’t skimp on lighting. Luxury

doesn’t have to mean expensive; good light-

ing is part of luxury living.

Lighting must be prioritized in a budget for

downsizing to a condo, remodeling or new

construction.
