developed by the same team that brought us last year’s ground-breaking conference, ‘The Future of Yacht Recycling’, this year’s event, ‘Sustainability in the Marine Industry’ - SImI16 - pushes the concept one step further by looking at the problems associated with recycling and how life cycle assessment is relevant in minimising issues surrounding end-of-life-boats.

To further expand on the problems with a linear ‘take-make-dispose’ approach, which results in accumulation of waste, siMi16 will present a new business model – the ‘circular economy’ – and showcase how it can be applied, profitably, to the marine industry.

RECYCLINgLast year’s sell-out conference, ‘The future of Yacht Recycling’ - held as part of METSTRADE 2015 - brought together a lot of data and information. This year we will revisit this topic and discuss what has been achieved, one year on.

Click here to see more about the ‘Future of Yacht Recycling’ conference, METSTRADE 2015

LIfE CYCLE ASSESSmENT The life cycle assessment analyses the effects of a product on the environment during its entire existence, from production through its period of use and it’s End-of-Life recycling. It is a quantitative evaluation of ecological aspects such as the emission of greenhouse cases (including carbon dioxide), energy consumption and acidification. There is a laid down procedure for life cycle assessment plans according to ISO 14040 series of standards.

CIRCULAR ECoNomYa circular Economy (cE) is one that is restorative and regenerative by design, and which aims to keep products, components and materials at their highest utility and value at all times, distinguishing between technical and biological cycles.

SIMI16 will introduce ‘Cradle-to-Cradle, the ‘engine’ behind cE, and provide examples of the financial benefits accessed by creating capital from waste, rethinking the way we view ownership by licensing and leasing products from the manufacturers and as such it is a model that builds prosperity long term.

CE is quite simply about closing the loop, which the previously accepted linear process failed to do. In a circular thinking process, the priority shifts to upgradable, re-usable products, long lasting goods and renewable energy.

In just five years, BLUE has helped create some of the world’s largest marine reserves in chagos in the indian ocean, around pitcairn in the pacific and more recently, around Ascension Island in the Atlantic Ocean.

Back home in UK waters, BLUE has created a successful new model of sustainable fishing in lyme bay on the south coast of England, demonstrating how livelihoods and ocean conservation work hand in hand - a blueprint with the potential to be replicated around the coast of britain and beyond. BLUE has now set its sights on restoring the native oyster to the Solent.

We are proud to call BLUe our supporting sponsor...

As BLUE’s executive director, Charles Clover says, ‘We can do it here, we can do it now.’ And that’s exactly what the blue Marine foundation has been doing over the last five years; solving one of the world’s biggest environmental problems by creating vast marine reserves.

Those who draw enjoyment from the oceans have a remarkable opportunity to be at the vanguard of the battle to protect these environments for future generations. It is only through working together that we can really make a difference.
