Floor PlanThe final floor plan evolved from our

preliminary design criteria. The most

challenging thing was to keep the

basic layout and stay within 1100

square feet total area while using

modular dimensions.

• We chose to make a single story house with no

basement because the occupants wouldn‟t be able to use a

basement and it would cost a lot more money than using slab

on grade construction.

• We looked at many different foundation options but

decided to use 10” CMU‟s because they‟re cost efficient, a

natural material and are made only 3 miles from our building

site.

• We used 2x4 studs @ 24” OC for our walls because it

uses less materials, it is cost efficient , and we chose NU-

WOOL for the cavity because it has a high R- Value and makes

a very dense wall.

• We agreed on using thin brick veneer because it is

cost efficient ,it is made only 7 miles from our building site, it is

very durable, requires little to no maintenance and still has the

same great look of brick but uses a lot less natural material.

• We chose Hardie Board siding because it resists

damage from insects, wind and hail, water resistant ,it can not

catch fire, good in cold climate and humid climates, requires

little maintenance and creates a dense wall.

• We chose SIPs panels because we have a cathedral

ceiling and wanted the massive beams to be shown and

because the greatly decrease heating and cooling costs

• We used 2” EPS below the slab because it is water

resistance, and has a high compressive strength.

• Dow Styrofoam

• Nu-Wool – Recycled Content

• Flooring

– Carpeting

• The Carpeting we chose called “Smart

Strand” by Mohawk is made with corn

starch

• It has very low VOC

– Bamboo

• The reason we used bamboo is because

it is a highly renewable resource and it

has great durability

•Ink wash

•Learned the basic of developing an ink wash design

•Insulation and R values

•We learned about R-Values and how they relate to

building materials

•We followed the guidelines in the 2009 International

Residential Code: Table 1102.1 Insulation and

Fenestration Requirements by Component

•Zone 6

•Wood Frame Wall R-Value – 13+5 (meaning 13

in the wall cavity and 5 insulated sheathing) or

20

•Slab R-Value: R10 – 4 Feet Deep

•We looked at various insulation types and buildings

methods and decided to use cavity insulation with

insulated sheathing to reduce the amount of materials

used and reduce potential for stud ghosting.

•Windows

•Window frames: Wood, Aluminum

•Different styles of Window grills

•Different window panes (multiple panes)

•Different styles of windows and how they are used

in different ways

•You can fill double pane with argon to increase the

R value.

•You can put low E inside or outside the window or

both to allow light through that blocks UV rays and

radiation

•Egress Requirements

•Manufactures

•LEED points

•We learned how the point system works and how

to make are house LEED certified

•Site planning

•We learned about property lines, contours, utilities,

and set backs.

•We Learned to put deciduous trees on the south

side to block the sun in the summer but let sun in in

the winter to heat up the house.

•Most windows on southern side of house

•Modular Dimensions

How to make a modular house

The rules to design a house is modular

CMU‟s

Odd Feet: inches are 4”

Even Feet: inches are 0” or 8”

Minimize waste from un used materials

Lessons We Learned
