2019 Susquehanna Folk Festival a Success! The second edition of the Susquehanna Folk Festival was held on July 26-28, 2019, at beautiful Roundtop Mountain Resort in Lewisberry. We were fortunate to have three days of absolutely gorgeous weather as a backdrop for a fantastic festival, which featured such main stage performers as Hot Club of Cowtown (the act voted #1!), BeauSoleil with Michael

Doucet, Dom Flemons, Cherish the Ladies, Pride of New York, Kittel and Co. featuring John Doyle, and the Faux Paws.

The Emerging Artist Showcase was again an audience favorite, and this year’s winning act, The Quixote Project, earned a spot on the main stage and studio time at Radio Vibe Recording. The festival’s Liars Contest was also well received, and the winners were Gary Buchanan, 1st place;

Robin Moore, 2nd place; and Sandy Schuman, 3rd place. However, the big hit of the festival was the dance hall, where there was a packed floor of enthusiastic dancers during nearly the entire 32 hours of festival programming.

All in all there were 77 events including 27 performances, 11 workshops, nine dances, nine jams, six family activities,

five storytelling events, four interviews with master musicians, four traditional craft demonstrations, and four “Country Music” talk-backs with musicians.

The festival drew 1,400 attendees from all over Pennsylvania; 16 other states (CA, DC, DE, FL, KY, MA, MD, MS, NC, NJ, NY, OH, SC, VA, VT & WV); and Norway and Germany. We’d like to thank all our wonderful sponsors and also our honored guest, Tony Chauveaux, the

National Endowment for the Arts’ deputy chairman for programs and partnerships.

Make sure to mark your calendar for next year’s festival to be held July 24- 26, 2020!

Having performed more than 1,000 concerts in more than 15 countries over the past 18 years, Genticorum is a well-known fixture of the international world, trad, folk, and Celtic music circuit. The Quebec-based group returns to Central Pennsylvania for a Susquehanna Folk Music Society concert at 7:30 pm on Friday, September 20, 2019, at Millersville University’s Ware Center, 42 North Prince Street, Lancaster.

Genticorum is known for its energy and stage presence, often being mistaken for a larger ensemble. Sing Out! Magazine says the band “makes a very full and glorious noise, both instrumentally and vocally (with) a compelling sound that retains its joy.”

Firmly rooted in the soil of their native land, this energetic and original “power trio” also incorporates the dynamism of today’s North American and European folk cultures in their music. They weave precise and intricate fiddle, flute, and accordion work, gorgeous vocal harmonies, energetic foot percussion, and guitar accompaniment into a big and jubilant musical feast. Their distinctive sound, sense of humor, and stage presence make them a supreme crowd pleaser.

Pascal Gemme is a leading light in Quebec’s traditional music scene. Known as much for his original compositions as for his fine interpretation of traditional tunes, he is the band’s fiddler, singer, and arranger, helping to produce six Genticorum CDs that have won worldwide critical acclaim. From a young age, the fiddle music and songs of Gemme’s native province have captivated him. After graduating from Montreal’s St. Laurent College with a degree in composition and band arrangements, he immersed himself in the traditional music around him, playing, collecting, and recording music found all over Quebec.

Since forming in 1992, a strong, shared musical vision has helped Old Blind weather the inevitable lineup changes (one founding member remains) so that each incarnation of the band brings the polished vocals, soaring fiddle, stirring pipes, and dynamic percus-sion that have long thrilled fans. Old Blind Dogs have released 13 studio albums; their latest CD, “Room With a View,” was shortlisted for Album of the Year at the Scots Trad Music Awards in 2017. The band has twice won the prestigious title of Folk Band of the Year at the Scots Trad Music Awards.

Aaron Jones (bouzouki, vocals, guitar) is one of the most in-demand accompanists on the traditional music scene today. He tours worldwide and records with some of the biggest names in traditional music, including Kate Rusby, Siobhan Miller, Emily Smith, and Robyn Stapleton. He was voted Instrumentalist of the Year in a public vote at the 2005 Scots Trad Music and for 10 years has been an official accompanist for the BBC Young Traditional Scottish Musician of the Year Award.

Donald Hay (percussion, vocals) has the exceptional ability to play with power, empathy, delicacy, and drama. Over the last 20 years he has become one of the most highly sought-after percussionists on the Scottish and English folk scenes. He has appeared on recordings by Sting, Eliza Carthy, Kate Rusby, Martin Carthy, Kathryn Tickell, Gordon Duncan, Battlefield Band, and Nuala Kennedy Band. In addition to Old Blind Dogs, he currently performs with Nuala Kennedy and with harpist Mary MacMaster.

Jonny Hardie (fiddle, vocals) is a co-founder of Old Blind Dogs. He has arranged, produced, or performed on over 50 CDs, recording and performing with artists as diverse as Kylie Minogue and The Chieftains with Ry Cooder. He is currently working with fellow Aberdonians Simon Gall and Jenny Sturgeon, and is musical director and writer for Dogstar Theatre Company. He teaches fiddle at Aberdeen City Music School.

Concert tickets are $24 for general admission, $22 for SFMS members, and $10 for students ages 3-22. Advance tickets are available for purchase from Brown Paper Tickets at www.brownpapertickets.com or (800) 838-3006. The Susquehanna Folk Music Society and its partners, World Dance Lancaster and Harrisburg Folk Dance, welcome dance master and singer Iliana Bozhanova and accordionist Todor Yankov back to Central Pennsylvania for a Bulgarian dance workshop at 4 pm on Sunday, October 27, 2019, at The Movement Center, 2134 North Second Street, Harrisburg.

Bozhanova and Yankov have made frequent appearances at SFMS dance events. They have wide experience collaborating with various Bulgarian folk dance ensembles, and were founders of the prestigious Ensemble Voivodintsi, which has grown to more than 100 dancers, singers and accompanists. Bozhanova has also taught at most major U.S. dance camps.

The dances are of the easy “follow-the-leader” variety, and no partner is required. Tickets are $18 for general admission and $14 for SFMS members. All tickets will be sold at the door.

The husband-and-wife duo of Jane Rothfield and Allan Carr bring the fruits of their 30-year musical partnership – a unique blend of traditional and original Celtic and Appalachian-style music – to a Susquehanna Folk Music Society concert on Friday, October 11, 2019, at the Fort Hunter Centennial Barn, 5300 North Front Street, Harrisburg. The fun begins at 7:30 pm.

A Connecticut native, Rothfield is an award-winning fiddler, clawhammer banjo player, and tune composer with deep roots in the fiddle traditions of New England, Scotland, and the American South. Carr is a stellar traditional singer and guitarist from Aberdeen, Scotland, “whose resonant vocals have a depth found only in the rarest of singers” (Boston Globe).

Rothfield and Carr play roots music that is directly from the source while expanding on that tradition with newly composed songs and tunes. With great singing, hot instrumentals, and Carr’s humor, their concerts are a whole lot of fun.

Rothfield’s mother introduced her to folk music at an early age through the music of Pete Seeger and Jean

Ritchie. She started her musical career at age five as a Suzuki violin student and quickly discovered traditional fiddling. She formed her own band in

high school with her twin brother, playing traditional bluegrass and old-time music. In 1978, while studying in Scotland, Rothfield met Carr, who had grown up in a musical family of singers, fiddlers, pipers, and accordion players and who possessed a unique repertoire of songs, ballads, and stories from his native land.

While based in Scotland, Rothfield and Carr toured extensively at folk clubs and festivals in the U.K. and U.S., performing and recording two

critically-acclaimed albums with Silly Wizard’s Martin Hadden. Since returning to the U.S. in 1988, they have continued to play festivals, concerts, and contra dances, mainly in the Northeast.

In 2007 Rothfield and Carr joined forces with banjo

great David Kiphuth and his wife, singer Linda Schrade, to form the highly regarded Red Hen Stringband. After moving to the Philadelphia area in

2009, Rothfield and Carr formed the contra dance band Coracree with Bill Quern and Sarah Gowan.

In recent years Rothfield has also performed with Sugar Pie, Panache Quartet, Blain Sprouse, Nathan Bontrager, Brendan Power, and her daughter Shona Carr. She is also in demand as a teacher, conducting group workshops and “jumpstart” weekend music camps for fiddle, banjo, and guitar.

Concert tickets are $20 for general admission, $16 for SFMS members,

and $10 for students ages 3-22. Advance tickets are available for purchase from Brown Paper Tickets at

www.brownpapertickets.com or (800) 838-3006. This concert is presented in cooperation with Dauphin County

Parks and Recreation.

Grammy-winning singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Tim O’Brien and his musical and life partner Jan Fabricius come to Central Pennsylvania for a Susquehanna Folk Music Society concert at 7:30 pm on Sunday, October 27, 2019, at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of York, 925 South George Street, York.

A West Virginia native, O’Brien grew up singing in church and school, and first gained attention in the 1980s with Colorado’s Hot Rize bluegrass band. Over the years he has also recorded with his sister Mollie O’Brien, old-time musician Dirk Powell, and songwriter Darrell Scott, and he has collaborated with the likes of Kathy Mattea, Steve Earle, Mark Knopfler, Bill Frisell, and Steve Martin.

Fabricius, who will be joining O’Brien on vocals, grew up in western Kansas. Her older sister taught her to play piano and later mandolin, and she played clarinet in her high school band. She also sang in her school and church choirs. Her early influences included Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Hot Rize, New Grass Revival, Guy Clark, Rodney Crowell, and Norman Blake.

Fabricius has attended the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, Kansas, since 1976 and has also enjoyed being at various bluegrass festivals over the years, singing and jamming around the campgrounds. A registered nurse, she started dating O’Brien in 2011 and later moved to Nashville. They play fiddle tunes and sing bluegrass songs around their home. When O’Brien made his recording “Pompadour” in 2015, Fabricius sang background vocals on several songs and was soon singing on stage with him. Her vocals and mandolin are also featured on “The Tim O’Brien Band” and O’Brien’s 2017 recording “Where the River Meets the Road.”
