8 Survival Guide to the CAPS for the FET Phase

OVERVIEW OF CAPS

The Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statements (CAPS) replace the

National Curriculum Statement documents although the content is based

on the NCS. There is one single comprehensive National Curriculum and

Assessment Policy for each subject.

• Learning areas are now known as subjects.

• The terms Learning Outcomes and Assessment Standards are no

longer used – instead the CAPS documents specify the content topics

(knowledge and skills).

Assessment in Grades 10 and 11

The internal assessment mark allocated to assessment tasks completed

during the school year will be 25% and the end-of-year assessment will

count 75% of the total mark.

The end-of-year assessment must consist of tasks that are internally set,

marked and moderated, as specifi ed by the Curriculum and Assessment

Policy Statement (CAPS).

Assessment in Grade 12

The internal assessment mark will be 25% and the external assessment

mark will make up 75% of the total mark, as specifi ed in the Curriculum

and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS). The internal assessment will be

externally moderated.

Curriculum topic changes: MathsThe main change across the FET phase is that most of the work covered previously in the optional Paper 3 is now included in the core Maths curriculum. These sections are: Euclidean Geometry and Probability. To allow for this Linear Programming, Transformational Geometry and Recursive Sequences have been removed from the curriculum.

Grade 10:

a) NEW FOR TRIG: The reciprocal trig functions are introduced. Derive the values of the trig functions for the special angles 0˚; 30˚; 45˚; 60˚; 90˚.
