Introduction Programme Survival Activities

2013

Page 2: Survival Activities

A new experience, a new beginning, an awesome time in Delft! That is studying at the Technical University of Delft. To prepare you for a smooth start and an unforgettable time, the Central International Office designed a two-weeks Introduction Programme covering some obligatory programme elements such as project work, lectures, a Library & Campus Tour, FunInTheSunday and Presentations day. But also personal ‘a la carte’ activities referred to as Survival Activities.

Survival Activities? We hear you think… But no worries, we won’t drop you in the jungle or send you on a wild water rafting trip! The so-called ‘Survival Activities’ are a range of activities which will help you ‘survive’ the Netherlands, Delft as well as academic TU Delft. Maybe you want to learn more about the Dutch culture and become familiar with the most important places in the city and the university? Do you rather prefer meeting your peers, visiting the most convenient shops and warehouses in your neighbourhood or maybe you would like to cook together? This is just a small selection out of the options you will have!

Survival Activities are always a lot of fun! But they are much more than mere social events or entertainment. They form a substantial part of your Introduction Programme and help you to get around, create a social network, feel at home and settle in your new environment. That is why we call this part of the Programme: Serious Fun!

In this booklet you find information about all the Survival Activities taking place during the Introduction Programme. It is up to you to pick the activities of your interest so you can adapt the Introduction Programme to your personal needs

and preferences!

In order to plan your personal Survival Schedule you can check Delftulip and the Survival Café which is thé place to be during

the Introduction Programme. Here you can find daily updated posters with detailed information about the activities. The

coaches at the Survival Activity Desk are there to help you create your own programme and answer your questions concerning the Survival Activities.

How to take part in an activity? Just show up in time at the starting point. Survival activities are build on the fair principle of “First comes, first served”. If you are too late or if there is crowd of interested people for an

activity, there will always be a nice alternative to join another moment where you can do the same or similar

activity. Always check out the Survival Café to find out the lastest details and updates.

Dear Student,

The Survival Café will be the

starting point for all activities!

Page 3: Survival Activities

Paying or Free? A lot of survival activities are free or sponsored by the University or by external parties. Activities like dinners or picnics you only pay for the basic costs, such as ingredients or necessary materials. You can recognize these paid-activities by the black coin icon. Of course we try to keep extra costs as minimal as possible! Cash is accepted at the Survival Bar (for drinks and snacks) and at the meeting point (for participation in a paid Survival Activity).

Survival Bar Payment PolicyTo speed up paying at the bar you can only pay with EUR 2, 1 and 0,50 coins, or EUR 5, 10 banknotes.

Survival Activity Desk Payment PolicyChange counter to get EUR 2, 1 and/or 0,50 coins and EUR 5 and 10 banknotes for your other denominations.

Survival Activity Payment PolicyPlease prepare the EXACT amount for the organiser of the activity who will collect your participation fee.

During some activities you will probably buy personal stuff (e.g. when you are hunting for a bike, or nice furniture for your new home, or just groceries). This will be on your own costs and responsibility.

During the activities the coaches will give you valuable advice.

We wish you a great time. Enjoy the experience and feel free to come to us with questions and last but not least: Have a lot of (serious) fun!

Themes

Food is essential to make you feel at home, and dinner is the best time to socialise!

Therefore Food & Eating has an important place in our Programme. We will organise breakfast, a picnic and multiple dinners (almost) every day, with a wide range of types of food and meals! Sometimes there will be typical Dutch food, other days our coaches will provide you a delicious Indian or Italian meal. For sure there will be something (healthy) for everyone, also for the vegetarian people

amongst us! And as you have to eat anyway, why not join in for a fun

and social meal with us!

Food

Of course we cannot go through these two weeks without getting very

practical. You will also need material stuff to survive! Some of those will be typical Dutch, like a bicycle and some waterproof clothing. But you probably also need some kitchen utensils, a telephone, basic ingredients to cook and clothes to adjust to the Dutch weather. Don’t worry, we will take you around to

show you where to go and what to buy!

Shop

Studying at the TU Delft can be a new and different educational

experience. A new university, a new study environment, a new language and a new way of (project)work. To prepare you for this we offer you some fun activities in which we will explain, practice and demonstrate some typical TU Delft issues. Come and join to start your studies with a solid

foundation and get rid of your possible doubts!

Learn

Discover the fun part of ‘serious fun’! ‘Serious Fun’ are the key-words for our Survival Activities. In every activity you’ll discover the ‘fun’ and the ‘serious part’. In the following collection of activities it won’t be difficult to discover the ‘fun’ part: We will take you to the movies, some festivals, the beach and

of course for a drink or game in a bar!

Page 5: Survival Activities

During your Dutch experience of course you also want to see as much as possible from your surroundings and the country that you are staying in. Delft and its neighbour cities have a lot to offer and therefore we would like to take you there for some nice sightseeing trips. If you don’t think you will have the time to do these visits during

your studies then join us now!

Sightseeing

Maybe the Dutch are exceptionally found of planning, they do have a strict schedule to follow each day! But that doesn’t mean we are not up for surprises at all… Each day we will have an early-wake-up activity and a sleep-in activity which we will create on the spot. Come to the Survival Café and see

what we can do together!

Surprise

Of course we also would like to introduce you to some other organisations that could come in handy during your stay here or that are just indispensable to have seen at least once. We have gathered a wide range of organisations and activities, covering issues from Dutch building projects, TU (designs)

initiatives to (international) student societies.
