Market research survey.

In order for me to create an informed magazines directed at a target audience, I first needed to find a target audience and find out further information about them. So I created an online survey on www.surveymonkey.com. I asked this information to aid the accuracy of my magazine, for example I asked about what they liked and what they didn’t like about magazines, so I could tailor the magazine according to the results. Here are the questions I

asked, the results of what I got and some information about the results.

The first question I asked was what age range the participants where in, this was important as it is a vital piece of information as it highlights my target age group. The most popular age group was 16-18 and the second most popular was 19-21. From this I could conclude that the age group I should direct my magazine at is 16-21 and more specifically 16-18. For example this age group is the older teen, which stereotypical

enjoying listening to music, using the interred and socialising. So I should aim to include things like up and coming artists and social connections like artists twitter and instagram feeds.

The next question asked the genre of the participant. This was not as important as the age as gender does not directly link to specific themes. However it does help with types of music, and content. The results I gained where that more here where more females in the sample. But this information does not completely change the aspect of what I would like my magazine to contain as I wish to create I more diverse magazines suited for male and female in the age target.

I then questioned whether or not they listen to music; this was a broad question as I could refer to listen to your own music, the radio or just enjoy it when music is being played. As I am creating music I would hope the sample to contain a majority of

music listeners and it would help with follow up questions. The results reflected this as all participants answered saying that they do

in deed listen to music. This also does show that I will need to make sure my magazine does include a lot of music related information, picture’s and text.

As a follow up question to the previous, I asked what genre of music they enjoyed listening to; the question was a multiple choice so it allowed for the participants to selected a hand-full of answers to allow for eclectic answer. Some of the most common answer where, indie, r&b alternative, rock and hip hop. So these types of ages will feature in my magazine.

I then asked if they read magazines, the majority of participants replied saying they did, his help with the validity of the results, as we know that people who read magazines ad

know about there are in fact giving accurate answers.

This was a key question as it would aid the main type of content that my magazine would feature. I asked if they prefer visual (pictures, graphics, illustration) or textual (interviews, reviews, word based content) when it come to a magazine. The majority chose visual, so I will be sure to include lots of visual aspects to my magazine.

Next I asked a more specific question of what they didn’t like about magazines. This question gave qualitative data as it was up to them what they write. So I hen pooled this information and created groups for the types of answers given. The most popular was that they did not like it when there was too much text (this is also shown in question 6). However the next most popular answer was boring content. Therefore the content I do include will have to be entertaining and interesting to my target. audience.

Continuing with the previous question I then asked about what they liked about magazines. There was a varied

response, but the most frequent answer was they liked interviews, pictures, updates in the music industry and free things. But with this being said all of the groups where relatively popular so I will try to include the main 4 and also the other 8 but not a profoundly.

For some further information of how the population of the targeted audience socialising I asked what social media platform’s they used. I asked this so if I am to incorporate social feeds and updates i would know where to take them from. The most popular were twitter and instagram. This is good because instagram is picture based, and they said they liked visual more; so this would be a good way if incorporating updates of artists into my magazine in a visual format.

Finally I asked how much they would be willing to pay for a magazine. This is so I know who to price my magazine. The most common price preference was £2.00 to £2.99, so this is the price range I am going to go from.
