IntroductionThis survey is done to help me make the best music magazine I can. I have a variety of open and closed questions to further help me gain both qualitative and quantitative data. Closed Questions: These type of questions give me data quickly and is normally quantitative as there options given for the audience to look at and selectOpen Questions: These type of questions give me data that can’t give me data quickly. This question is open to a whole variety of questions and gives me qualitative data.

Quantitative Data: This is normally associated with closed questions and gives me figures to work with when analysing dataQualitative Data: This is normally associated with open questions and gives me the thoughts and opinions of the sample.

My sample size is 15

On this slide I just wanted to get a general idea of the people I am sampling before I ask them the subject related questions.

In the graph on the left, I simply asked the sample their age and as you can see 87% of my sample is 15 – 19, whilst only 13% is 20 – 24.

In the graph on the right, I asked what gender they are. It was quite an even split of genders which is good for my sample.

I then asked, what ethnicity they are and the majority of those I asked is Asian (Other) whilst the other two ethnicities that was asked was White British and Black African.

Would You Subscribe To A Music Magazine?

Yes No

If yes, how often do you expect to receive the magazine?

Weekly Monthly

I asked my sample how many magazines were bought in a month and 47% of my sample said they may not have bought any or they have bought just one. This may imply that they don’t necessarily buy hard copies but may opt to look at the virtual ones via mobile apps or on a website. Whilst 40% of my sample said they have bought 2 – 3.

From those that said yes to the subscription question, 80% of those who said yes would rather receive it on a monthly basis.

When asked if they would subscribe to a music magazine, 2/3 of my sample said that they wouldn’t subscribe to a music magazine. This may be the case because they may prefer to buy weekly editions of the magazine and physically buy it in store, rather than wait for it to come through the letter box everyday.

How Much Are You Willing To Spend On A SINGLE Magazine?£0 - £1.99 £2 - £3.99 £4 - 5.99 £6+

I then asked how much would they spend on magazine and half of my sample would spend £0 - £1.99 and the other half would spend £2 - £3.99. Realistically no one would want to spend more than £4 on a magazine unless its for a subscription.

R&B Perceptions & ConceptsThis slide mainly focuses on the perceptions of the R&B genre

What kind of artists would you like to see on a front cover of an R&B maga-

zine?Current Artists Future of R&B Previous Artists

This question is debatable in regards to results. This is because the sample may think that R&B is available for everyone but there isn’t an option to pick it. Nevertheless I asked them to pick a specific age range and 40% of my sample said R&B belongs to the 15 – 15 year old genre

Knowing what kind of artist my sample may want to see on the front cover may also help me to determine what I can do as my feature article for my double page spread. 53% would like to see a current artist. However when asking the sample, they responded with “I don’t mind” suggesting that it doesn’t matter what kind of artist they would want, so I simply asked for what they prefer.

Open QuestionsOpen questions doesn’t give me quantitative data, so to analyse this kind of data, I will be noting down any notable/common responses that

I got.

What words would you associate with the R&B genre?Notable Responses:ModernCommonPopularAn escapeRelatable

I asked this question to get an idea of what I can call my magazine. Responses that stand out to me is “Escape” and “Common”.

What kind of iconography would you associate to be in the R&B genre?Notable Responses:Big headphonesJukeboxCross

I asked this question to get an idea of what props I can use for my front cover. The one that stands out for me is the cross. This can connate many things for a front cover such as an artists connection with religion.

What kind of articles would you expect in an R&B magazine?Notable Responses:The artists story/journeyHistory of the genreIn depths look into one particular artist

I asked this question to get an idea of what I can do for my double page spread. Any of the notable responses can be a good topic to focus on in a double page spread. But I want my double page spread to focus on an artist.

Page 7: Survey data analysis

ConclusionOverall, what I have found out with my questionnaire is that the R&B genre is beginning to be synonymous with the 15 – 19 year old demographic; however as people grow older R&B may still be in their minds. I have also discovered that more people would rather subscribe to a music magazine than buy individual magazines on a weekly basis. However if they were to buy a single magazine, they would spend in between the region of £0 - £3.99.

I have also learnt that the main concept of my magazine should be based around current artists rather than previous or any future artists. However I would like to focus on the future of R&B as many young audiences will want to find out who they may be listening to in the future.
