Safety Read this section before using the equipment. This section containsrecommendations and practices applicable to the safe installation,operation, and maintenance (hereafter referred to as “use”) of the productdescribed in this document (hereafter referred to as “equipment”).Additional safety information, in the form of task-specific safety alertmessages, appears as appropriate throughout this document.

WARNING: Failure to follow the safety messages, recommendations, andhazard avoidance procedures provided in this document can result inpersonal injury, including death, or damage to equipment or property.

Safety Alert Symbols The following safety alert symbol and signal words are used throughout thisdocument to alert the reader to personal safety hazards or to identifyconditions that may result in damage to equipment or property. Comply withall safety information that follows the signal word.

Responsibilities of the Equipment Owner Equipment owners are responsible for managing safety information,ensuring that all instructions and regulatory requirements for use of theequipment are met, and for qualifying all potential users.

Safety Information � Research and evaluate safety information from all applicable sources,

including the owner-specific safety policy, best industry practices,governing regulations, material manufacturer’s product information, andthis document.

� Make safety information available to equipment users in accordancewith governing regulations. Contact the authority having jurisdiction forinformation.

� Maintain safety information, including the safety labels affixed to theequipment, in readable condition.

Instructions, Requirements, and Standards � Ensure that the equipment is used in accordance with the information

provided in this document, governing codes and regulations, and bestindustry practices.

� If applicable, receive approval from your facility’s engineering or safetydepartment, or other similar function within your organization, beforeinstalling or operating the equipment for the first time.

� Provide appropriate emergency and first aid equipment.

� Conduct safety inspections to ensure required practices are beingfollowed.

� Re-evaluate safety practices and procedures whenever changes aremade to the process or equipment.

User Qualifications Equipment owners are responsible for ensuring that users:

� receive safety training appropriate to their job function as directed bygoverning regulations and best industry practices

� are familiar with the equipment owner’s safety and accidentprevention policies and procedures

� receive, equipment- and task-specific training from another qualifiedindividual

� possess industry- and trade-specific skills and a level of experienceappropriate to their job function

� are physically capable of performing their job function and are notunder the influence of any substance that degrades their mentalcapacity or physical capabilities



Applicable Industry Safety Practices The following safety practices apply to the use of the equipment in themanner described in this document. The information provided here is notmeant to include all possible safety practices, but represents the best safetypractices for equipment of similar hazard potential used in similar industries.

Intended Use of the Equipment � Use the equipment only for the purposes described and within the limits

specified in this document.

� Do not modify the equipment.

� Do not use incompatible materials or unapproved auxiliary devices.Contact your Nordson representative if you have any questions onmaterial compatibility or the use of non-standard auxiliary devices.

Instructions and Safety Messages � Read and follow the instructions provided in this document and other

referenced documents.

� Familiarize yourself with the location and meaning of the safety warninglabels and tags affixed to the equipment. Refer to Safety Labels andTags at the end of this section.

� If you are unsure of how to use the equipment, contact your Nordsonrepresentative for assistance.

Installation Practices � Install the equipment in accordance with the instructions provided in this

document and in the documentation provided with auxiliary devices.

� Ensure that the equipment is rated for the environment in which it will beused and that the processing characteristics of the material will notcreate a hazardous environment. Refer to the Safety Data Sheet (SDS)for the material.

� If the required installation configuration does not match the installationinstructions, contact a Nordson representative for assistance.

� Position the equipment for safe operation. Observe the requirements forclearance between the equipment and other objects.

� Install lockable power disconnects to isolate the equipment and allindependently powered auxiliary devices from their power sources.

� Properly ground all equipment. Contact the local building codeenforcement agency for specific requirements.

� Ensure that fuses of the correct type and rating are installed in fusedequipment.

� Contact the authority having jurisdiction to determine the requirement forinstallation permits or inspections.



Operating Practices � Become familiar with the location and operation of all safety devices and

indicators.

� Confirm that the equipment, including all safety devices (guards,interlocks, etc.), is in good working order and that the requiredenvironmental conditions exist.

� Use the personal protective equipment (PPE) specified for each task.Refer to Equipment Safety Information or the material manufacturer’sinstructions and SDS for PPE requirements.

� Do not use equipment that is malfunctioning or shows signs of apotential malfunction.

Maintenance and Repair Practices � Perform scheduled maintenance activities at the intervals described in

this document.

� Relieve system hydraulic and pneumatic pressure before servicing theequipment.

� De-energize the equipment and all auxiliary devices before servicing theequipment.

� Use only new factory-authorized refurbished or replacement parts.

� Read and comply with the manufacturer’s instructions and the SDSsupplied with equipment cleaning compounds.

NOTE: SDSs for cleaning compounds that are sold by Nordson areavailable at www.nordson.com or by calling a Nordson representative.

� Confirm the correct operation of all safety devices before placing theequipment back into operation.

� Dispose of waste cleaning compounds and residual process materialsaccording to governing regulations. Refer to the applicable SDS orcontact the authority having jurisdiction for information.

� Keep equipment safety warning labels clean. Replace worn ordamaged labels.

Equipment Safety Information This equipment safety information is applicable to the following types ofNordson equipment:

� hot melt and cold adhesive application equipment and all relatedaccessories

� pattern controllers, timers, detection and verification systems, and allother optional process control devices



Equipment Shutdown To safely complete many of the procedures described in this document, theequipment must first be shut down. The level of shut down required variesby the type of equipment in use and the procedure being completed. If required, shut down instructions are specified at the start of theprocedure. The levels of shut down are:

Relieving System Hydraulic Pressure

Completely relieve system hydraulic pressure before breaking any hydraulicconnection or seal. Refer to the melter-specific product manual forinstructions on relieving system hydraulic pressure.

De-energizing the System

Isolate the system (melter, hoses, guns, and optional devices) from allpower sources before accessing any unprotected high-voltage wiring orconnection point.

1. Turn off the equipment and all auxiliary devices connected to theequipment (system).

2. To prevent the equipment from being accidentally energized, lock andtag the disconnect switch(es) or circuit breaker(s) that provide inputelectrical power to the equipment and optional devices.

NOTE: Government regulations and industry standards dictate specificrequirements for the isolation of hazardous energy sources. Refer tothe appropriate regulation or standard.

Disable the Guns

All electrical or mechanical devices that provide an activation signal to theguns, gun solenoid valve(s), or the melter pump must be disabled beforework can be performed on or around a gun that is connected to apressurized system.

1. Turn off or disconnect the gun triggering device (pattern controller, timer,PLY, etc.).

2. Disconnect the input signal wiring to the gun solenoid valve(s).

3. Reduce the air pressure to the gun solenoid valve(s) to zero; thenrelieve the residual air pressure between the regulator and the gun.



General Safety Warnings and Cautions Table 1-1 contains the general safety warnings and cautions that apply toNordson hot melt and cold adhesive equipment. Review the table andcarefully read all of the warnings or cautions that apply to the type ofequipment described in this manual.

Equipment types are designated in Table 1-1 as follows:

HM = Hot melt (melters, hoses, guns, etc.)

PC = Process control

CA = Cold adhesive (dispensing pumps, pressurized container, andguns)

Before processing any polyurethanereactive (PUR) hot melt or solvent-based material through acompatible Nordson melter, read and comply with the material’s SDS.Ensure that the material’s processing temperature and flashpoints willnot be exceeded and that all requirements for safe handling,ventilation, first aid, and personal protective equipment are met.Failure to comply with SDS requirements can cause personal injury,including death.

WARNING: Reactive material! Never clean any aluminum componentor flush Nordson equipment with halogenated hydrocarbons. Nordsonmelters and guns contain aluminum components that may reactviolently with halogenated hydrocarbons. The use of halogenatedhydrocarbon compounds in Nordson equipment can cause personalinjury, including death.

WARNING: System pressurized! Relieve system hydraulic pressurebefore breaking any hydraulic connection or seal. Failure to relievethe system hydraulic pressure can result in the uncontrolled release ofhot melt or cold adhesive, causing personal injury.

WARNING: Molten material! Wear eye or face protection, clothingthat protects exposed skin, and heat-protective gloves when servicingequipment that contains molten hot melt. Even when solidified, hotmelt can still cause burns. Failure to wear appropriate personalprotective equipment can result in personal injury.

WARNING: Equipment starts automatically! Remote triggeringdevices are used to control automatic hot melt guns. Before workingon or near an operating gun, disable the gun’s triggering device andremove the air supply to the gun’s solenoid valve(s). Failure todisable the gun’s triggering device and remove the supply of air to thesolenoid valve(s) can result in personal injury.

WARNING: Risk of electrocution! Even when switched off andelectrically isolated at the disconnect switch or circuit breaker, theequipment may still be connected to energized auxiliary devices.De-energize and electrically isolate all auxiliary devices beforeservicing the equipment. Failure to properly isolate electrical power toauxiliary equipment before servicing the equipment can result inpersonal injury, including death.

CA

WARNING: Risk of fire or explosion! Nordson cold adhesiveequipment is not rated for use in explosive environments and shouldnot be used with solvent-based adhesives that can create anexplosive atmosphere when processed. Refer to the SDS for theadhesive to determine its processing characteristics and limitations.The use of incompatible solvent-based adhesives or the improperprocessing of solvent-based adhesives can result in personal injury,including death.

WARNING: Allow only personnel with appropriate training andexperience to operate or service the equipment. The use of untrainedor inexperienced personnel to operate or service the equipment canresult in injury, including death, to themselves and others and candamage to the equipment.

CAUTION: Hot surfaces! Avoid contact with the hot metal surfacesof guns, hoses, and certain components of the melter. If contact cannot be avoided, wear heat-protective gloves and clothing whenworking around heated equipment. Failure to avoid contact with hotmetal surfaces can result in personal injury.

CAUTION: Some Nordson melters are specifically designed toprocess polyurethane reactive (PURR) hot melt. Attempting toprocess PUR in equipment not specifically designed for this purposecan damage the equipment and cause premature reaction of the hotmelt. If unsure of the equipment’s ability to process PUR, contact aNordson representative for assistance.

CAUTION: Before using any cleaning or flushing compound on or inthe equipment, read and comply with the manufacturer’s instructionsand the SDS supplied with the compound. Some cleaningcompounds can react unpredictably with hot melt or cold adhesive,resulting in damage to the equipment.

CAUTION: Nordson hot melt equipment is factory tested withNordson Type R fluid that contains polyester adipate plasticizer.Certain hot melt materials can react with Type R fluid and form a solidgum that can clog the equipment. Before using the equipment,confirm that the hot melt is compatible with Type R fluid.

Other Safety Precautions � Do not use an open flame to heat hot melt system components.

� Check high pressure hoses daily for signs of excessive wear, damage,or leaks.

� Never point a dispensing handgun at yourself or others.

� Suspend dispensing handguns by their proper suspension point.

First AidIf molten hot melt comes in contact with skin:

1. Do NOT attempt to remove the molten hot melt.

2. Immediately soak the affected area in clean, cold water until the hot melthas cooled.

3. Do NOT attempt to remove the solidified hot melt.

4. In case of severe burns, treat for shock.

5. Seek expert medical attention immediately. Give the SDS for the hotmelt to the medical personnel providing treatment.

Description SureBead A modular hot melt guns are designed for easy flushing byremoving the nozzle from the module. SureBead A guns areair-open−air-close resistance temperature detector (RTD)-controlled gunsthat come completely assembled with a module, nozzle, manifold, solenoidand cordset. Nozzles used with a SureBead A gun are designed to performsimilar to reduced cavity and zero cavity nozzles. Figure 2 shows thecomponents of a SureBead A gun.

Hot Melt Materials SureBead A guns are designed to dispense packaging grade adhesives. Donot dispense polyurethane reactive or polyamide hot melt materials throughthe guns.

Auxiliary Devices and Spare Parts SureBead A guns should only be connected to approved auxiliary devices.Failure to do so could void any warranty claims. Use only new Nordsonreplacement parts or approved factory refurbished parts.

Nozzle Selection Because of improved design efficiency of the SureBead guns, adhesivebead volume may vary slightly from equivalent H200 RC and ZC modules.Adjust the adhesive pressure to compensate.

Installation Guns are installed using the following six-step process:

� Observe all warnings, cautions and notes in the following procedures

� mount to parent machine

� connect the air supply

� connect the adhesive supply hose

� nozzle removal and gun flush

� install the nozzle

Guns ordered with special options may require additional installation stepsthat are not described here.

NOTE: In-line filters are an optional accessory that may be orderedseparately. Refer to Parts at the end of this manual for part numbers.

Unpacking and Inspection 1. Carefully unpack the gun.

2. Inspect the gun and inventory the contents of the shipping package.Guns are shipped with the components shown in Table 3. Report anymissing or damaged components to a Nordson representative.

Installation Guidelines

Mounting� Do not remove the nozzle from the SureBead A gun until it is time to

start the system and flush the gun.

� Mount the gun so that the nozzle tip will be perpendicular to and nomore than 13 mm (0.5 in.) away from the substrate.

NOTE: Guns can be mounted at distances greater than mentionedabove, but higher operating pressures are required for operation. Thismay also result in stringing and other bead pattern distortions.

� Make sure the mounting location provides sufficient clearance aroundthe rear or sides of the gun so that the manifold cover or endplates canbe removed for service.

� Mount the gun on a rigid support that is isolated from external vibrationsand that prevents the gun from rotating.

� To minimize heat loss, thermally isolate the gun from the support usingthe insulator provided with the gun.

Hydraulic and Pneumatic Connections� To minimize heat loss and adhesive flow obstruction, use only one

adapter fitting to connect the adhesive supply hose to the gun.

� Thermally insulate the hose-to-gun joint. SureBead A guns are shippedwith an insulating cuff.

� Use only clean, dry, non-lubricated air.

� Ensure that the plant air supply and regulator provide a minimum of3.4 bar (50 psi) to the gun solenoid valve.

NOTE: The gun will not operate properly if air pressure is not set at theminimum pressure.

NOTE: 4.5 bar (65) psi air pressure is recommended for optimumperformance.

Mount the Gun This section describes the following gun-mounting options:

� mounting a gun on a new or existing system

� replacing a gun on an existing system

� mounting a low-profile gun

Equipment configuration and production line may require a variation in themounting options described in this section. Regardless of the mountingmethod used, follow the guidelines provided in Installation Guidelines.

Mount a Gun on a New or Existing System

WARNING: Risk of personal injury or equipment damage. Do not removethe nozzle from SureBead A guns until it is time to start the system andflush the guns. The sharp needle on these guns is exposed whenever thenozzle is removed.

1. See Figure 3. Slide the gun mounting clamp onto a mounting bar9−16 mm diameter (3/8−5/8 in.), or disassemble the clamp andreassemble it (with the gun and insulator) onto a mounting bar. Makesure the insulator is placed between the manifold and the clamp.

2. Securely tighten the mounting clamp.

3. Go to Making the Solenoid Valve Connections.

Replace a Gun on an Existing System

WARNING: Risk of personal injury or equipment damage. Do not removethe nozzle from SureBead A guns until it is time to start the system andflush the guns. The sharp needle on these guns is exposed whenever thenozzle is removed.

NOTE: SureBead A guns are preassembled with a performance-matchedsolenoid valve. If a SureBead A gun requires replacement, NordsonCorporation recommends replacing the entire gun assembly (both the gunand solenoid valve) as a single unit.

1. Relieve system hydraulic pressure and disable the gun to be replaced.Refer to Safety.

2. Disconnect the adhesive supply hose from the gun both electrically andhydraulically.

NOTE: Record the exact position of the nozzle relative to the substrateprior to removal. This will make pattern set up much easier when thesystem is restarted.

3. Separate the existing gun from its mounting. If a mounting clamp will notbe reused, remove it from the mounting bar.

4. Mount the new gun and insulator onto the existing mounting clamp (orrod). A rod should be 9−16 mm diameter (3/8−5/8 in.). Make sure thatthe nozzle is positioned in the same location as the old gun. Tighten theclamp securely.

5. Go to Making the Solenoid Valve Connections.



Making the Solenoid Valve Connections Solenoid valves must be connected to an air supply and to a triggeringdevice, such as a pattern controller or timer. The solenoid is preinstalled onthe gun. Standard SureBead A guns are supplied with 24 VDC, 5.4 Wsolenoids.

CAUTION: Risk of valve failure. Solenoids must be rated for the outputvoltage of the triggering device (pattern controller, timer, PLC, etc.) and foruse in high-temperature applications. Refer to Installation Guidelines.

Connect the Air Supply Connect a clean, dry, non-lubricated, regulated air supply to the solenoidvalve. Refer to Installation Guidelines provided earlier in this section and tothe instruction sheet supplied with the valve.

Connect the Triggering Device 1. See Figure 4. Remove the solenoid valve terminal block. Save the

rubber gasket between the terminal block and the valve.

CAUTION: Do not attempt to pry the terminal block out of the housing.Doing so can damage the electrical connections pins.

3. Thread a 0.75−0.34 mm2 (18−22 AWG) three-conductor cable throughthe housing strain relief.

4. Connect the positive and negative lead to terminals 1 and 2 (polaritydoes not matter) and connect the ground wire to the ground terminal.The terminal positions are marked on the bottom of the terminal block.

5. Snap the terminal block back into its housing.

6. Align the rubber gasket on the terminal block housing, plug the terminalblock into the solenoid valve, and secure it with the screw removed inStep 1.

7. Connect the three-conductor cable to the triggering device. Refer to theinstructions that came with the triggering device.

8. Go to Connecting the Gun and Hose.



Connecting the Adhesive Supply Hose NOTE: Refer to the user’s guide shipped with the hose for detailed hoseinstallation guidelines.

1. Do one of the following:

� If an in-line filter is to be used (refer to Parts), remove the hoseconnector on the gun and install the in-line filter.

NOTE: The filter mesh selection should match the nozzle size. Refer toTable 5 under In Line Filters in the Parts section for more information.

� If an in-line filter is not used, check the tightness of the hoseconnector.

2. See Figure 6. Connect the hose swivel fitting to the gun hose connector.Use two wrenches to tighten the hose fitting.

3. Connect the gun cordset to the hose.

Flushing the Gun Flush the gun of any possible foreign material before commencingoperation.

CAUTION: This equipment is factory tested with Nordson Type R fluidcontaining polyester adipate plasticizer. Certain adhesives may react withthe Type R fluid residue to form a solid gum that can be difficult to remove.Consult with the adhesive supplier to determine the adhesive compatibilitywith Type R fluid.

1. Disconnect or turn off the solenoid valve triggering device and relievesystem hydraulic pressure.

WARNING: Risk of personal injury or equipment damage. The sharpneedle on SureBead A guns is exposed whenever the nozzle is removedfrom the module. Use extreme care to avoid contact with or cause damageto the needle.

2. Remove the nozzle.

3. Place a catch pan under the gun.

4. Supply air to the solenoid, heat the system and increase the hydraulicpressure.

CAUTION: Do not exceed 6.9 bar (100 psi) hydraulic pressure during thisprocedure. Doing so can cause injury.

5. Manually activate the gun-purge mode on the pattern controller, ormanually energize the solenoid. Refer to the appropriate manual.

6. When the hot melt is clear and free of foreign material, shut off thematerial pressure supply. Continue to the next procedure to installnozzles.

Installing Nozzles

WARNING: Risk of personal injury or equipment damage. The sharpneedle on SureBead A guns is exposed whenever the nozzle is removed.Use extreme care to avoid contact with or cause damage to the needle.

WARNING: Shutoff air pressure to the gun before performing theseprocedures.

CAUTION: Do not install a SureBead nozzle on a cold gun. Doing so candamage hydraulic seals and cause module failure. Install nozzles only whenthe gun is at operating temperature and material supply pressure is at 0 psi.

NOTE: New, used, and different sized nozzles may be interchangedbetween modules.

1. See Figure 8. Install the nozzle by threading it onto the module by handand then using a torque wrench to tighten the nozzle to no more than4.5 N�m (40 in.-lb). Do not overtighten.

2. Repressurize the system and manually cycle the module several timesuntil the fluid stream is uniform.

3. Set the system to operation pressure and check for leaks between thegun, hose, and melter.

Operation WARNING: SureBead A gun modules are adjustable. Adjusting the gunmodules for low air pressure operation without making a correspondingreduction in hydraulic pressure may cause the gun modules to remain open.Refer to the next section to properly adjust SureBead A modules foroperation at a low air pressure (less than 50 psi).

WARNING: If system hydraulic pressure is above 90 bar (1300 psi) and airpressure supply is removed, the module may automatically open anddispense material.

Operating Under 3.4 bar (50 psi) Air Pressure This adjustment changes the load spring tension only. It will not affect thestroke of the valve. This procedure cannot be used to disable the module.On multi-module guns, the adjustment of the load spring may be used tohelp synchronize module-to-module pattern placement.

Normal operating air pressure range for SureBead A guns is 3.4−5.5 bar(50−80 psi), with optimum performance achieved at 4.5 bar (65 psi). Ifavailable air pressure is below 3.4 bar (50 psi), adjustment of the loadspring may be required.

See Figure 9. Rotate the adjusting screw counterclockwise with a 4 mm(5/32 in.) hex wrench to allow for operation below 3.4 bar (50 psi).

CAUTION: Rotating the adjusting screw from the original factory settingmay allow the module to automatically open if the gun air supply is off andhydraulic pressure is above 20.7 bar (1300 psi).

Returning a Gun Module to the Factory Setting 1. Disable the gun. Refer to Safety.

2. See Figure 9. Turn the adjustment screw clockwise until itbottoms out.

3. Turn the adjusting screw counterclockwise two revolutions.This position will approximate factory settings.

WARNING: Risk of fire. Do not heat Nordson Type R fluid above 245 �C(475 �F). Use only an industrial grade, regulated, electrical heating devicethat is designed to heat industrial fluids. Personal injury or property damagecan result if Type R cleaning fluid is heated with an open flame or in anunregulated heating device.

CAUTION: Do not use a torch or high heat above 260 �C (500 �F).

4. Soak the nozzles in Nordson Type R cleaning fluid that has been heatedabove the melting point of the hot melt, or use a hot air knife.

5. Remove the nozzles from the cleaning fluid.

CAUTION: Use the correct size precision pin probe to clean Nordsonnozzles. The use of non-precision or incorrectly sized probes may damagethe nozzle. The Nordson nozzle cleaning kit (part 901915) contains a varietyof probe sizes.

6. Insert a correctly sized cleaning probe at the outlet of the nozzle.

7. With a clean cloth, firmly grip the cleaning probe, then pull the probe outof the nozzle, wiping the probe clean.

CAUTION: Install SureBead A nozzles only when the gun is at operatingtemperature. Failure to do so can damage the internal hydrualic seal andcause module failure.

8. Reinstall the nozzles. Tighten the nozzles to 4.5 N�m (40 in.-lb). Do notovertighten.



Inspecting the Gun Wiring 1. De-energize the system. Refer to Safety.

2. Remove the manifold cover.

3. See Figure 14. Check the internal gun wiring for signs of damage andthe terminal block connections for tightness.

Repair This section provides procedures for replacing a gun RTD, heater, module,or solenoid valve.

NOTE: Refer to Parts later in this manual for replacement part and repairkit part numbers.

Replacing an RTD or Heater RTDs are hardwired through the gun cordset. If an RTD fails, Nordsonrecommends that the entire gun cordset be replaced. Heaters areterminated inside the manifold and can be replaced individually withoutreplacing the entire cordset.

The following procedure describes RTD replacement by replacing the entirecordset. Instructions for replacing a heater are also included. To replace anRTD without replacing the entire cordset, use the RTD replacement kit listedin Parts. Kits contain detailed replacement instructions.

Access the RTD or Heater1. De-energize the system and disable the gun. Refer to Safety.

2. See Figure 15. Unplug the gun cordset from the hose.

3. If the gun is not easily accessible, relieve system hydraulic pressure(refer to Safety) and disconnect the hose from the gun.

4. Loosen the screws and swing the manifold cover aside. The screws donot need to be fully removed.

Replace the RTD or HeaterSee Figure 14 and 16.

1. Remove the RTD or heater from the manifold.

NOTE: If the RTD is stuck, it can be removed pushing with a flattenedpunch from the other side.

2. Disconnect the cordset leads from the terminal block. If the heater isbeing replaced, disconnect the heater leads from terminal block.

To replace the RTDa. Disconnect the ground lead from the manifold.

b. Remove the cordset from the manifold and install a new cordset.Tighten the cordset locking nut or threaded tension relief.

c. Reconnect the ground lead to the manifold.

To replace the heatera. Trim the leads of the new heater to match the leads of the old heater.

b. Coat the heater with heat-conductive paste (part 257326) and theninsert the heater in the manifold.

c. Insert each heater lead into the terminal block and tighten theterminal block screws.

d. Insert the heater leads from the cordset into the terminal block andtighten the terminal block screws.

Restore the System to Normal Operation

CAUTION: Ensure that the cover O-ring on waterwash-style guns is ingood condition and properly positioned before reinstalling the manifoldcover.

1. Reinstall the manifold cover.

2. Connect the hose to the gun.

3. Plug the gun cordset into the hose.

4. Restore the air pressure (3.5−5.5 bar, 50−80 psi), and resume normaloperation.

Replace a Module See Figure 17. There are two different types of SureBead replacementmodules: SureBead A and SureBead S.

� SureBead A: air-open−air-closed.

� SureBead S: air-open−spring-closed.

SureBead guns are shipped with “A” modules only. Verify the type ofmodule before proceeding with installation.



NOTE: The pressure recommendation listed on the module is for airpressure only.

1. Make sure the gun is at operating temperature.

2. De-energize the system and disable the gun. Bleed off the hydraulicpressure, then shut off the air supply. Refer to Safety.

WARNING: Risk of personal injury or equipment damage. The sharpneedle on SureBead A reduced cavity guns is exposed whenever theneedle protector or nozzle is removed from the gun. Use extreme care toavoid contact with or damage to the needle.

3. If it will be reused, remove the nozzle from the module being replaced.

4. See Figure 18. Remove the module from the manifold by removing thetwo mounting screws from the front of the module.

CAUTION: Do not allow adhesive to enter the module air passages.Adhesive that enters the air passages will obstruct the flow of air anddamage the module.

5. Carefully remove any residual hot melt from the module mounting face,and clean the face.

NOTE: If hot melt does enter the air passages, temporarily place thegun into operation, shield the operator, then trigger the gun to expel thehot melt from the air passages.

6. Apply anti-seize compound to the module mounting screws, thenreinstall the module on the manifold. Tighten the screws to 3.4 N�m(30 in.-lb). Do not overtighten.

7. Install the old nozzle or a new replacement nozzle. Tighten the nozzle to4.5 N�m (40 in.-lb). Do not overtighten.

NOTE: If using a new nozzle, remove the nozzle protection cover beforerestoring the gun to operation.

8. Restore the system to normal operation.

Replace a Solenoid Valve Refer to the instructions shipped with the replacement solenoid valve.

WARNING: Risk of personal injury. Correct reinstallation of the solenoidvalve is required to prevent normally open gun operation. A normally opengun will dispense adhesive uncontrollably until the primary air supply isinterrupted.

SureBead A guns are shipped with an installed solenoid valve. A new valvemust have the same center-line dimensions and port operation as theNordson valve, and must be able to withstand temperatures of85 �C (185 �F). See Figure 19. Nordson solenoid valve port 4 must beconnected to the closed SureBead A gun manifold port and solenoid valveport 2 must be connected to the open gun manifold port.

If an alternate solenoid valve-mounting location is required on a SureBeadA gun, use 8 mm diameter x 1 mm wall (5/16 in. diameter x 0.040 in. wall)tubing. Tubing or pipe with a smaller inside diameter will restrict gunperformance. New compression nuts will be required (refer to Parts).
