Keynote Presentation – Bill Gordon 9:15 am-10:15am

Laughter, Learning, Leisure and Love: Taking Care of Balance in Our Lives

This session examines the importance of creating a balance in life; of making sure that each of us takes time to give ourselves “gifts” on a regular basis, and Bill believes that four of the

most powerful “self gifts” are laughter, learning, leisure and #1, love.

Morning Sessions 10:30 am – 12:30 pm

A1. The Things Children and Youth Need - Bill Gordon A number of years ago, Bill was asked to do the keynote presentation to the teaching staff of Elk Island School Division on the topic, “Paving the Way to the Future: What Children Will Need in the Next Century”. The more he looked into the directions that education, society, technology and learning were taking, the more he realized that the most important things children would need are the very same things that they have always needed and which can only be supplied to them by loving, knowledgeable and child-focused adults in their lives. In this presentation, Bill shares, through stories and humour, the role that all adults play in helping provide, “the things children need”. A2. “Time to Update your Status: Staying Safe and Sound Online” - Ariel Haubrich

The fascinating and fast-paced world of technology, the internet, cell phones, social networking and video-based activity has opened the world, to an endless supply of information, people, content and connection. However along with the benefits and opportunities of the vast cyber playground there lies a sharper and more dangerous side: anonymity, personal over-disclosure, cyber-bullying, devolution of social and emotional skill & connection, exploitation and deceit. This workshop will educate and enlighten participants with the “ins & outs” of learning and playing online, the positive & negative effects of this activity, and present practical and plausible ways to ensure our safety and our wellness as we spend more and more time online. Information, tools and strategies will be presented as we hope to find ways to stay well on the web!

A3. The Art of Successful Communication - Fred Sudfeld We all talk, we all listen, and we all seem to be communicating. Is there really a more successful way to communicate? While it is true we all communicate, the truth is not all of it is successful. So what is successful communication? Successful communication builds relationship, resolves issues, and brings understanding. This session will provide participants with the skills and knowledge to begin to practice the fundamental art of successful communication.

A4. Creating a Positive Productive Workplace - Brenda Robinson

Page 6: Support Staff: Vital to · Laughter, Learning, Leisure and Love: Taking Care of Balance in Our Lives This session examines the importance of creating a balance in life; of making

There are five key elements involved in building a positive, productive workplace: 1. Frequent, timely, specific feedback which balances positive and negative information. 2. Delegation of appropriate responsibility for tasks and outcomes. 3. Opportunities to work on teams with specific goals and adequate shared information. 4. Awareness of the big picture and input into the approaches and ways to address challenges, barriers and changes. 5. Laughter, humour, lightness and fun.

A5. Numeracy... Math through Play! - Sonia Yudcovitch Participants in this workshop will explore all the strands in the Alberta math curriculum through play and open-ended activities. Students will be able to challenge themselves at a personal level while also experiencing several co-operative games to solve math problems. This is a hands-on and active workshop which brings laughter and fun to learning math for students, in any classroom.

A6. Structured Teaching - Chris Kish Students with Autism respond well to structure. A teacher must structure the classroom in order to effectively teach students with Autism.

The dictionary states that structure is the action of building or constructing--arranging things in a definite pattern of organization. For example, a gardener desiring a prosperous garden must use structure in planning and cultivating a garden. Seeds and plants must be arranged with a definite pattern of organization and using systematic methods to-allow for individual preferences and needs of plants for shade, sun, water, and closeness to other plants. Using this structure will amplify a plant's strengths and help to compensate for and circumvent its weaknesses. The plant will then grow faster and bear more fruit.

Teachers, too, must structure and organize classroom life in order for students to expand their strong areas as well as grow in their weaker ones. Structured teaching does exactly this for students with autism.

A7. Substance Use & Youth - Keily Stetson Have you ever tried on the Impaired Vision Goggles or played a game of Beer-less Pong before? Do you know what a Standard Drink looks like? Participants in this session will have the opportunity to take part in some of the activities that are done with youth in a school setting during presentations around addiction & mental health. This session will cover a number of topics including drug trends, trends in youth & most commonly used substances as well as most common mental health concerns for youth. This information will cover signs & symptoms, how to access services and the important role you play as an asset builder within the school.

Page 7: Support Staff: Vital to · Laughter, Learning, Leisure and Love: Taking Care of Balance in Our Lives This session examines the importance of creating a balance in life; of making

A8. Integrating the iPad into the Classroom and Uses for Professional and Personal Organization - Sarah Saysana This session will take you through some useful apps in two categories - use with students, and professional/personal organization and collaboration. For use with students, we will explore digital storytelling to enhance learning in all core subjects. We will also look at the iOS Google Apps for professional/personal organization and collaboration. You will have some session time to work with the apps introduced and will walk away with a basic understanding of their uses as well as some more apps to explore on your own. To get the most out of this session, bring along your iPad and be able to access the App store.

B1. The Five “C’s” Of Remarkable People - Bill Gordon "You are the leaders of tomorrow!" What youth conference or high school graduation hasn't contained those words somewhere in the body of the message? Bill, on the other hand, believes that this message is only partially correct because it fails to take into account that for many people, including adolescents and young professionals, their leadership skills are already making a difference TODAY. In this session, participants will be introduced to the five c's remarkable people of any age, Commitment, Communication, Caring, a Challenge to Change Attitude, and Creativity.

B2. 2 Seconds, 2 Minutes, 2 Hours: Building Relationships & Connecting with Kids - Ariel Haubrich The role and challenges that we face in working toward the success & healthy development of students

Page 10: Support Staff: Vital to · Laughter, Learning, Leisure and Love: Taking Care of Balance in Our Lives This session examines the importance of creating a balance in life; of making

have changed. Research shows that secure, healthy relationships with caring, involved adults build resiliency & have an impact in academic, social & moral development. Often, adults are limited by their knowledge of how to make these important connections & break though the generation gaps. This session includes interactive learning, a review of research & strategies for building & reinforcing the importance of relationships in our various roles…even if you only have 2 seconds!

B3. Work/Life Balance (Wait! Don’t Run!) - Fred Sudfeld In today’s world, people are starting to avoid this topic as they have come to associate this topic with being made to feel guilty and/or being given “seemingly impossible” challenges to find that illusive “work/life balance”. This session will challenge this perspective and take a new look at the pursuit for balance. This session will endeavor to throw-out the word balance and instead consider “purposeful living” and provide strategies designed to reduce stress and increase happiness.

B4. The Intergenerational Workplace - Brenda Robinson “Differences are Not Difficulties” Today's world is different. This can present your organization with a challenge or a chore - the choice is yours. What can we do to encourage intergenerational understanding? Have we joined the "I" generation? Are we isolated, insulated, independent, individualized and sometimes even indifferent? Do we pre-judge and get set in our ways? What about the new generations? What motivates younger people to work with us? Is the new era difficult - or just diverse in ways of thinking and doing? Working together works when we work at it! Diversity builds the strength we need. Understanding differences can lead to enhanced decision making and informed processes. Celebrating differences will bring excitement and energy to the work we do.

B5. Precious Partners - Sonia Yudcovitch As we move through the 21st Century, the role of T.A.’s and E.A.’s are becoming more important in addressing diversity. In this workshop participants will: · Understand the T.A. role and different approaches to teaming with teachers and assisting students · Learn about the range of exceptional learners (mild, moderate, severe) also ESL/ELL · Engage in several strategies to meet the learning needs of a wide range of learners · Become familiar with some effective organization that improves task completion in a demanding job · Learn strategies for record-keeping that are simple and facilitate Anecdotal reporting · Play games that make learning FUN

B6. Sensory and Learning in the Classroom - Chris Kish Sensory Processing can affect people in only one sense–for example, just touch or just sight or just movement–or in multiple senses. One person with SPD may over-respond to sensation and find clothing,

Page 11: Support Staff: Vital to · Laughter, Learning, Leisure and Love: Taking Care of Balance in Our Lives This session examines the importance of creating a balance in life; of making

physical contact, light, sound, food, or other sensory input to be unbearable. Another might under-respond and shows little or no reaction to stimulation, even pain or extreme hot and cold. In children whose sensory processing of messages from the muscles and joints is impaired, posture and motor skills can be affected. These are the "floppy babies" who worry new parents and the kids who get called "klutz" and "spaz" on the playground. Still other children exhibit an appetite for sensation that is in perpetual overdrive. Sensory Integration can be supported within our teaching and learning environments, minimizing impact and promoting achievement!

B7. An Introduction to Google (Chrome and Drive) in the Classroom and Beyond - Sarah Sansaya If you are interested in learning the power of Google Chrome and the versatility of Google Drive, this session is for you. You will leave with a working understanding of the basics of Google Chrome including how to access your settings on multiple computers and Chrome apps/extensions. You will be introduced to Google Drive and how to use it for storage, document creation and sharing/collaboration. To get the most out of this session, bring along your laptop or chromebook and be able to access either your division’s GAFE account or your own personal Google account (iPads/Phones have limited functionality with Chrome). B8. Loss, Grief and Growth - Jeremy Allen

B12. Advanced Excel - Evelyn Benoit

Learn how to manage information by using Excel tables which make it easy to format data, sort, filter, add totals, and use formulas. The IF function checks to see if a condition you specify is true or false. If true, one thing happens; if false, something else happens. Create a chart/graph which transforms spreadsheet data to show comparisons, patterns, and trends. Tiny charts called sparklines next to data give readers a picture of what the data means, making it easy to spot patterns and trends. Excel tips and tricks will be incorporated throughout the session.

After completing this hands-on session you will be able to:

Create tables

Change table format

Sort and filter table data

Use formulas with tables

Use the IF function

Create charts/graphs

Insert sparklines

This session is ideal for Destiny or Non-Destiny users, Follett eBooks will work with whatever automations system your school/District is using.

Full Day Sessions (10:30 am – 3:15 pm)

C1. Verbal Judo - Darcy Pennock Once regarded as one of the most important skills a person could possess, ‘classical rhetoric’ has become a lost art. Maximizing delivery style (facial expression, body language and voice) combined with the appropriate words in order to achieve a desired outcome has not been taught in North America in decades. The Greek philosopher Aristotle once said that “Audiences are made not found,” meaning that we can influence people either positively or negatively, depending on our delivery style.

For many, basic concepts of dignity and respect have fallen by the wayside. All too often, what should be nothing more than a low level contact for a minor complaint turns into a major incident, involving yelling, profanity, threats and even assaults. Furthermore, today’s technologies record these encounters (via CCTV or more likely cell phones) for the public to see and ultimately, pass judgment on. We operate on the premise that no employee goes to work looking for a complaint. This philosophy is supported by the significant reduction in complaints experienced by organizations that have provided accredited Verbal Judo training to their staff. Verbal Judo is a tactical communications course that stresses the importance of the professional mindset, removing the negative emotions that derail most difficult encounters and replacing them with a delivery style that is designed to diffuse even the most challenging interactions. We offer tactics that have been demonstrated to be effective even under the most extreme circumstances. Our training is designed to inspire and empower our audiences to rise to the occasion in order to engage the most challenging.

C2. National Safety Code - Daniel Wallis

The Transportation Industry is heavily regulated and many carriers do not know the rules they are to follow. We will go through the National Safety Code Standards and related legislation governing school buses that Carriers are expected to comply with. This full one day course will cover School Bus Carrier requirements, administration, training, driver files, vehicle files, resources and Nation Safety Code audit requirements.

C3. Language Arts Instruction at Hutterite Colony Schools - Bruce Oka Those who attend the session will first be given a brief outline of some of the theoretical foundations on which literacy instruction is based. This will be followed by information in support of acquiring literacy

skills for ESL students and how this is different from those for whom English is a first language. Session attendees will then be given methodologies, strategies, and ideas they can use with their students in their efforts to promote language development and literacy skills. Participants are encouraged to share some of the strategies and ideas they have found to be effective when working with Hutteriterian Brethren children.

Ariel has been involved in developing and leading school division projects, crisis response and program development, and she does training, presentations and workshops provincially, nationally and internationally on all topics of mental health & wellness.

Bill Gordon is a former high school teacher and counsellor with Elk Island Public Schools, and proud and excited forty-five year member of the teaching profession, Bill has travelled across Canada speaking to thousands of students, teachers, parents and organizations on topics such as Self Esteem, Leadership, Communication, Parenting, Suicide Prevention, Organizational Excellence, and The Power of Kindness.

Although he took early retirement from full time high school counselling in January, 2006, he continued to work for his school system in the Outreach (storefront) high schools as a counsellor until June 2012, when, to his wife’s surprise, he ACTUALLY retired! Although most of Bill’s work has been with students, teachers and parents in individual communities and conventions, he has also has presented keynote sessions at the provincial and national level for organizations such as the Government of Alberta, Vitalize Volunteer Conference, the Canadian National 4-H Foundation, the Canadian Student Leadership Conference, the Alberta Early Years Conferences, and many community departments and programs. His speaking style combining humour, story telling and presentations with a message is well suited to conferences focussing on organizational excellence, communication, character and team building, education, care giving or human relationships. A former recipient of the Murray Jampolsky Award for Outstanding School Counsellor in Alberta, Bill has been a suicide intervention trainer, and has written several manuals and course materials for health education, including the manuals, “Suicide, Depression and Coping,” “Teen Relationship Abuse”, and “Relationship Skills for Healthy Sexuality.” He is currently a member of the executive of the Alberta Coalititon for Healthy School Communities, an organization dedicated to the promotion of comprehensive school and community health. Bill is most proud of being married for forty-six years to his junior high school sweetheart, Jean, and of being a parent to their two sons, Jeff and Rob and daughters-in-law Bonnie and Wendy. (All six members of the Gordon family are educators) Bill is especially excited about being a grandfather to Lucy Elizabeth, Micah David, and Julia Rachel, three future educators. Bill has always believed in the importance of looking for the "worthfulness" in every person you meet and especially within yourself. The entire Gordon group have always worked together toward the goal

Page 16: Support Staff: Vital to · Laughter, Learning, Leisure and Love: Taking Care of Balance in Our Lives This session examines the importance of creating a balance in life; of making

of creating the "healthiest" family unit possible. Jean is embarrassed to admit that additionally, Bill has also spent most of his adult life engaging in "creative silliness," and living up to the nickname given to him by former students, "The Bionic Turkey,"

Brenda Robinson is a speaker, trainer, writer and consultant. She has been addressing groups for over twenty years on topics related to communications, humour, laughter, positive working skills and wellness in general.

Brenda received her Bachelor of Arts from Brandon University in Brandon, Manitoba (Major in English) and her Masters of Education from Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, B.C. in 1998.

Bruce Oka has worked with students from preschool to university. He has served as a classroom teacher, resource room teacher, school administrator, and student services coordinator. He spent the last ten years of his teaching career teaching at a Hutterite colony. Since retiring from teaching six years ago, Bruce has spent time writing curriculum materials for use in Hutterite colony schools, being a part-time instructor at Lethbridge College in the Educational Assistant program, and giving workshops to teachers and educational assistants throughout the province. Bruce has been the recipient of the Excellence in Teaching Award, the Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence, and the Outstanding Alberta Colony Educators’ Award.

Chris Kish has been working as a Behavior and Developmental consultant within Alberta classrooms for the past 5 years with TEAAM Consulting Ltd and has been working with children with severe complex needs for 16 years within schools, home environments and residential settings. First and foremost a teacher, Chris provides a perspective on complex students from a teaching and learning perspective. Chris brings staff on a journey so they can see behavior as a symptom, not the problem. Skill building within the areas of Executive Functioning, Communication, Social Understanding and Sensory Regulation are how to build strong learners that are more intentional within their participation in the classroom.

Dan Wallis has been an auditor for Alberta Transportation for four years. Before this Dan worked 10 years in the oil and gas industry as a safety professional. Dan has always had a passion for safety, and works in partnership with carriers and individual drivers in the education of current NSC safety standards. Traveling throughout Alberta, Dan assists transportation carriers in the development of safety and maintenance programs as well as preparing Alberta Carriers for upcoming NSC audits.

Darcy Pennock has presented Verbal Judo to thousands of Canadians for more than a decade. Darcy’s strength has hinged on his ability to successfully apply tactical communications techniques not only in one’s professional life but also in one’s personal life. The skills used to calm an angry client or diffuse a difficult staff member can also be used during challenging family situations. Darcy empowers his classes with a skilful mix of insight and humour, something he jokingly refers to as ‘entertainment.’
