The MoneySense for Schools website has four modules which take students through managing their money, understanding credit and debt, preparing to live independently, and discovering the financial matters involved in business. All four modules use case studies of young people to bring the activities to life and can be delivered on an interactive whiteboard.

Managing your moneyManaging your money helps students get to grips with banking and budgeting. Students can work through the interactive activities which include a virtual tour of a typical bank and understanding a bank statement. There are also a number of budgeting exercises, including ‘Budgeting for a holiday’ and the ‘Budget tool’.

Planning your future Planning your future asks students to make budgeting decisions on behalf of young people going into higher education, work and training, with an emphasis on Maths.

The module covers budgeting, saving options, understanding payslips, mortgages, salary expectations and the financial implications of different life choices students may make in the future.

Credit worthyCredit worthy uses relevant, up-to-date examples and topics to examine the pros and cons of borrowing, debt management and credit checking. The module helps students understand the costs and financial decisions related to independent living.

Throughout Credit worthy, students can work through interactive case studies and find out how different types of borrowing vary in cost.

You’re in business You’re in business introduces students to the skills and attitudes required when entering the world of work. The module covers the basic ethos of working life: going for a job; working in an organisation; freelancing and running your own business. Students can identify their skills, assign themselves business roles and, in teams, plan the launch of a new company. The module delivers Enterprise in a fun and interesting way and develops team work, communication and problem solving.

In the ‘Tendering for a contract’ activity opposite, students can tender for a dinner for 100 guests or a school trip to New York. Two delivery models provide the option to deliver sessions through four to five lessons or a whole-day Enterprise event.

Across the site, each topic has a ‘What do you think?’ video of young people talking about the subject. In the film below, young people discuss how they feel about money lending: who they think can lend money and what the implications are.

In the interactive activity shown below, students can explore a virtual branch to find out about different services generally available in banks. They can practise using a cash withdrawal machine and a paying-in machine, as well as filling in a paying-in slip.

In the activity shown below, students can assign life, career and financial choices to different life stages to create their own ‘Rough guide to your life’. Each category gives information about the financial implications of potential choices.
