TWO IFAPA EVENTS

LEGISLATIVE BREAKFAST

The annual Legislative Breakfast is scheduled for February 25 from 7-9 a.m. in the Legislative Dining Room at the State

Capital in Des Moines. All foster, adoptive, and kinship families are encouraged to attend and take advantage of the

opportunity to speak to your elected representatives. They do want to hear form their constituents and YOU are the ex-

perts on the needs of foster families. If you cannot at-

tend the breakfast, you are encouraged to contact your

legislators personally or at- tend one of the community

forums they regularly hold in the various towns they rep-

resent. Your voice can make a difference.

IFAPA Spring Conference

The annual IFAPA spring conference will he held on March 7-8 at Adventureland Inn in Altoona. With a theme of Abra-

cadabra: Solutions for Parents and Workers, the conference offers two full days of training covering the issues foster,

adoptive, and kinship parents report they need help with. Many of the training will feature national speakers you will

only hear at the conference. It’s also a wonderful opportunity to relax and meet other families from around the state.

Adventureland Inn is a great place to take the family or for parents to get

away by themselves without kiddos. The Black Hawk Support has some

money to offer as scholarships. Complete conference details and regis-

tration information are on the IFAPA website at www.ifapa.org. Deadline

is February 19!

In Iowa, foster parents need six hours of training annually to renew their foster care license. At least three training hours must be done in a group setting. Foster parents must complete their training two months prior to licensing date. Note: Families will no longer be granted extensions or exceptions for not getting their training credit on time.

If you want to receive foster parent training credit, it is your responsibility to send your training certificates to your KidsNet licensing worker within 30 days following the training. Be sure to keep the original copy for your records.

PLEASE KEEP IN MIND - With the exception of CPR, First Aid and Mandatory Reporter classes, foster parents CAN-

NOT receive training credit for any class after October 2009 that they have previously attended and used for re-

licensing.

Foster parents are mandatory reporters of child abuse. As mandatory reporters, foster parents are required to com-plete two hours of training in child abuse identification and reporting. This training must be taken within the first year of initial licensing and every five years thereafter. CPR & FIRST AID every three years, but before the end of the third training cycle.

“On Line Training”

DHS has approved that foster parents may receive up to 3 hours

foster care training credit for courses listed on

www.FosterParents.com and www.FosterParentCollege.com.

The foster parent will read the course material, answer the test

questions, and click on submit button. A certificate will be gener-

ated immediately. The certificate will need to be sent to your

licensing worker. Remember to make and keep a copy for your

records. There is a charge for these trainings.

“Mandatory Reporters Training”

The Iowa Department of Public Health has approved one

online Mandatory Reporter Training Class for foster parents

to take. Foster parents will receive 2 hours of credit for this

course. This course is $23.95 to licensed foster parents.

PLEASE REMEMBER-IFAPA promotes this online class as

an additional resource for foster parents; however, this is not

connected to IFAPA. For detailed instructions on how to take

this online course, visit the IFAPA website:

How to Deal with Stress

1. Look For Causes: Who or what is at the bottom of the stress? Dealing directly with the person

or issue may be the best approach.

2. Examine Your Relationships. What can you do to put more

warmth, or communication and more mutual support into them?

3. Evaluate. Not every argument is worth trying to win. Defend val-

ues that are important. But learn to ignore lesser issues.

4. Be Positive. If you fail, don’t concentrate on failure. Deliberately

recall past successes. It helps self-esteem.

5. Seek Advice. Confiding in a friend can uncoil the tightly wound

spring of tension. Seek professional assistance when needed.

You’re worth it.

6. So Something For Others. Reaching out can take the focus off

self and reduce the stress caused by brooding.

7. Do One Thing At A Time. The seconds pass in a single file. You

how quickly they become minutes and hours. You’ll get more

done and less “hassle” when you concentrate on each job as it comes.

8. Learn To Pace Yourself. You can’t operate in high gear all the time. Take a break. Go for a

walk. Look out the window. Do something else. Take a “time out.”

9. Exercise. Physical exercise can refresh you after heavy mental work. Reading a book can re-

lax you after demanding physical action.

10. Create a Quiet Place. Take time out to meditate, to pray. Recent studies of medication tech-

niques and yoga show that we can train ourselves to relax.
